The car buying process is broken-- there's no other way to describe it. Dealers actually compete with each other by saying they are less sleazy than their competitors. What should be a straightforward purchase turns into an hours long fake negotiation driven by salespeople that add little value. Can you imagine if in some other industry, literally every manufacturers rep selling a product was reviled by their customers? Ridiculous. Car brokers are a decent solution, but kinda broken, too. After talking to one broker who sent me barely coherent emails where he did nothing but pound his chest and tell me how great he was, and another who very dealer-like told me how they were the only honest broker out there, i found Cartelligent. They seemed professional and their fee was in the middle of everyone I talked to. Paid their fee, gave them the specs on the not readily available car and package I wanted. Honestly, my experience with Cartelligent had some problems-- a lot of poor communication that resulted in a lot of extra time wasted on my part. Someone up the food chain at Cartelligent got wind that I was dissatisfied-- he spent several days trying to reach out to me. He gave me a pretty detailed run-down on where and why the process had broken down a bit-- while placing some blame outside of their company, he frequently stated that, end of the day, they own the process and he took full responsibility for it and they made it right. Well done. So, not the best process, but they owned up to their mistakes, which I appreciate. I'll give them another shot next time I buy a car read more

We used Cartelligent to purchase a new Nissan Armada. We worked with Dwight who found the vehicle we wanted, with the options we wanted at the price we wanted. He did almost all the footwork to find and secure the vehicle even though inventory near us was rather low. He even found us a screaming deal on our loan (far below what I could have gotten on my own). He was professional, courteous and very responsive throughout the whole process. I think we exchanged in excess of 30 emails over the course of a couple of days. When we arrived to pick up our vehicle he had all the papers prepared in advance. I used this service to hopefully help save some time for myself and my family (since I had a promotional discount through my work, I figured, why not). Overall, mixed feelings. The Good: Having Cartelligent set up the financing, negotiate the price, and provide the super fast transaction (only met for about 30minutes) was amazing. This was the main benefit for me. Salesman was very nice. When there was an issue with the first car we found, they were still able to meet our original timing by finding something else and dropping the car at our home, free of charge. It was clear, that Cartellegent wanted to provide good service (however they didn't quite deliver on it; this only partially made-up for other issues we had. I was prepared to write I much better review, until there was lack of communication with our trade-in.) The Bad: The same salesman promised a lot, but only delivered when I called them out on it: 1. We barely met the original timeline I required (2 weeks), even though I was assured that would be more than enough time. There did not seem to be urgency on the part of Cartellegnet until I put pressure on them, even though It was clear that a fast turn-around was my #1 concern. If i did not pressure them, it would not have happened. I should be able to trust that when someone agrees to something, it will be happen. 2. Trade-in process was not clear and I would NOT do it again. We did not receive any final trade in offer before the car was sold, and we got a check in the mail. We had no option to decline it, and decide to sell elsewhere. However, it was extremely easy for us; just hand over the keys and get what you get. 3. Communication was often confusing. For example, I would have to correct our salesman while on the phone about things we wanted or were relevant to our car. It sounded like they were very understaffed. 4. The salesman would often say he would get back to us by a certain time, but would be late, or would require me to ask for an update. It was only when we were reaching our deadline, that he was much more responsive. Please don't tell me what I want to hear, tell me how it actually is. 5. One dealer Cartelligent worked with decided to not sell us the car at the last minute. Cartelligent, please vet your dealers more carefully, and don't work with people who will not provide quality service. 6. All of this additional follow-up time seemed to cost me more time in the end. I feel that me searching online and going to a dealer myself would have saved me time and stress (like ripping off a band-aid, rather than slowly pulling it off over 2 weeks). Bottom line: Use this service only if you don't care how long It will take to get the car, and the car you want is extremely hard to find. Otherwise, go to the dealer yourself, it's less stressful. (Just be smart and don't fall for the dealer's gimmicks with a little online research). Everyone I worked with was very nice and wanted to please; just seemed too overworked which resulted in confusion and broken promises. Cartelligent did an outstanding job finding the right car for my wife. We had a difficult set of options and colors to find on a 2011 Chrysler 300, especially since we wanted it on a year end closeout model, thus we were limited to the unsold cars on dealer lots. But Dwight McCarty found the exact car and configuration within a week and a half, including difficult to find colors. This might well have been the last available car in CA with this exact configuration we wanted. And when the dealer only wanted to trade for the car, not sell it, Dwight worked magic and found a car to trade for it, but that transaction between dealers was invisible to us. We've used cartelligent twice before (in their sausalito office) and was very pleased by pricing and how smooth the transaction was. But there was the thought of "could I have gotten a better deal haggling on my own?". Not the same as buyers-remorse.. but more of a curiosity of I wonder if we could've done better. So when our acura reached 10 years we decided to test it out this time while searching for a new acura mdx. We went to dealers and haggled our way, wasting away the days with two young kids in tow and dealing with sleazy salesmen and bitter coffee. After we got the price as low as we felt we could get, we left dealership saying we needed to get the kids something to eat and will come back later... (we never came back). Then we called Cartelligent or san jose and told them the exact same specs we were dealing with at the dealership and see what they can do. In the end... they couldnt' beat the price we haggled. the difference being about $1,000. So we declined the car that Cartelligent found and Cartelligent honored their end of the deal and gave us back the $500 fee since we found a deal cheaper, so we lost nothing other than time/effort on our part for this "test". We called the Acura dealer back up and what do you know? they raised the price significantly since we didn't call back the SAME day!! screw them. I hate them. Even when they kept calling back later with better deals, we decided we were in no hurry and drove our old acura for a couple of months more. Funny thing is that when it was due for its 105k service, I ended up spending about $1,000 in services! ironic? insane!! and they said the next service will cost that much since i postponed replacing the brakes. AHHhh ! time to seriously buy a new car! Screw it, we really didn't want to deal with the haggling ferengi-like salesmen at dealerships and went back to cartelligent in san jose. This time though we did a total turnaround and decided instead to go for the subaru outback. Something more cheaper, better milage, more practical, and good safety ratings. Dwight McCarty (our Cartelligent broker) came back with what we thought was a pretty good deal and even got some bonus upgrades on it that we weren't expecting. He even went OUT of his way to insist we don't get the hitch attachment from the dealer ($600) and instead installed it for us from u-haul for cheaper (about $200). the whole transaction at cartelligent went super smooth like last time, only spent like 20 minutes signing papers, going over the new car features. Dwight took care of everything for us, including the old-acura trade-in!! He was extremely professional the whole time. Also for fun he gave us a tour of the Club auto Sport building. Bottom line, is if you're willing to spend the days/hours arguing with sleazy salesmen, driving around dealerships or calling them you MIGHT find something cheaper on your own. But in the end for me, my time is precious and i hate dealing with unsavory folks so i let cartelligent do all the dirty work and i feel it is worth the fee they charge. I never feel "buyers-remorse" with them becuase I think they really try hard to make us happy since their reputation is at stake. read more

The Cartelligent team helped me end my lease early with Volvo and negotiate a great deal on a new Mazda 3 2014 hatchback. I would highly recommend using Cartelligent to purchase your next car. I dealt with Dwight McCarty, who was professional, responsive to questions, and ultimately got us the car we wanted. In my family's case, we were looking for a very specific model that was rare (actually, non-existent) on dealer lots in the area. Further, since a new model was being introduced the following year, the manufacturer was no longer taking special orders on the current model. I contacted a local dealer about locating the car we were looking for (since they didn't have it on the lot), and after several frustrating calls with the sales department, it was clear that they weren't interested in the hassle of trading a car on their lot for the car we wanted at another dealer. The salesperson simply stopped returning my calls (has this ever happened with another car salesperson?!). So I contacted Cartelligent. In the end, I can't say that Dwight was able to negotiate a _great_ price on the car, since it was pretty scarce, so we weren't in a great negotiating position. However, he did find the car at a remote dealer, got what I consider a fair price, arranged a fair price for our trade-in, and accomplished this all efficiently and in a friendly manner. Summary: I had a very good experience with Dwight McCarty at Cartelligent while buying a new car 3 months ago. I intend to do business with him again and I also recommend him to others. Details: - I have been a longstanding customer of Hammer Auto (have bought four cars from them over many years). I was satisfied with the service I got from Hammer Auto (I know the Yelp reviews on Hammer are mixed) but I decided to try Cartelligent because (1) a friend that I had referred to Hammer was not happy with his experience, and (2) a co-worker used Cartelligent and was very happy with Dwight. - Dwight was courteous, knowledgable and helpful throughout the process. I came to him with some broad requirements and we worked together to narrow things down to a specific make and model. Dwight helped me find local dealers to test drive vehicles and did a decent amount of pricing research to help me out. In the end, he helped me get a pretty good deal on the car I wanted. - Now here's the really important part. My lease was expiring and Dwight did an AWESOME job of settling my lease. (Basically I bought my leased car and sold it) The amount of money I made on "flipping" my leased car was several times more than Dwight's fees. (He explained that I got lucky and that I shouldn't expect such results every time) So overall, a really great experience. No meaningful negatives at all, except that sometimes Dwight wasn't super-fast to respond to email and that I had to follow up by phone a couple of times. I contacted Cartelligent at the request of my roommate, who wanted to buy a new car for his Mom and didn't want the hassle of purchasing from a dealership. I looked over the website, which answered most of my questions up front and also read through all the Yelp reviews. I initially spoke with Ryan, who gave me a brief overview of the process and said someone would contact me regarding my requirements. Sure enough, Dwight McCarty called later that afternoon and we discussed the details of the new vehicle, as well as a trade-in. My roommate had already picked out the car he wanted (2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS) and we took pictures of his Mom's car, so that Cartelligent could find a buyer for it. Dwight said that the new car purchase and trade-in were handled separately on their end (although seamless to the customer), as the dealership would not necessarily want, nor pay the highest, for the trade. After sending Dwight the new car specs and necessary documents, it took him less than 10 days to locate the new vehicle and find a buyer for the trade-in. We weren't expecting to save thousands of dollars on the Elantra, as it's currently a high demand model, so dealers have little incentive to discount. Still, Dwight was able to find the exact model, options and color at nice discount off sticker. In addition, he was able to generate strong interest in the trade-in (2005 Dodge Magnum) and got us $8,300 for the vehicle, when we would have been happy with anything over $5,000. Picking up the car at Cartelligent's office in San Jose was also smooth and easy. It took about 45 minutes to sign all documents and Dwight spent another 30 minutes educating us on all the Elantra's features. The bottom line is that we got the exact car we wanted, color and trim, at a very good price. I would definitely use their service again. Don did an excellent job, and so did Billy. However, it was not perfect or seamless. First, I would recommend selling your used car or trading it in on your own, instead of using their trade in service. Second, the first contract or paperwork from the dealer omitted the $500 manufacturer's discount. I noticed it when I carefully reviewed the paperwork, and saw a discrepancy in the monthly payment as quoted by Don, and what was actually on the contract. Don and the dealer, stood by their word, and wrote up a new contract, and the matter was quickly rectified. Lastly, the accessories we ordered for the car were missing. Apparently the dealer forgot them, even though we paid for them. It was a minor thing, but still a little annoying. I made an extra trip to their Menlo Park office, which is very nice indeed, in order to pick them up, and sign the new contract. Despite these minor annoyances, and minor lapses to details, I would highly recommend Cartelligent to Consumers. It was a pleasure not having to step inside the dealership, and dealing with their unsavory selling practices and techniques. It took out a lot of the aggravation of buying a new car. read more

This is the second time I have taken advantage of the Cartelligent new car buying service. The first time Dwight found me the exact spec VW Jetta TDI I was looking for (fresh off the cargo ship). This time around my wife wanted a new 2014 Sienna with specific options and color. I just had a great experience with Cartelligent and Dwight McCarty. A friend recommended that I use Cartelligent and I was completely impressed throughout the process. I wanted a car that had an unusual combination of features, a bit of a needle in a haystack. Dwight found and secured one right away. The paperwork was FedExed to me and the car was shipped to my door without my having to do anything! I had a really good experience buying a new car from Don at Cartelligent. I went in knowing which car I wanted. They quickly were able to find one and have it ready for me within a few days. I got a good price for it, and great service. There was one snafu with getting the HOV lane access sticker, and Don went to bat for me and was able to make everything workout. In contrast, I couldn't even get my local dealer to get me a price quote, even after they spent the time to do a test drive with me! What I would say is if want a fair price and great service, use Cartelligent. If your obsessed about price and want the absolute lowest price, and you like negotiating and have the personal time to put in, then take your chance with the dealers.
