My boyfriend picked this spot out for breakfast but I wasn't impressed with their breakfast selections. I don't eat pork so that knocked out at least half the breakfast menu and I generally prefer sweet breakfast to savory. The only sweet options were pancakes, which I was wary of ordering at a Mexican place. Instead, I chose to order off the lunch menu. The chicken tacos sounded like a safe bet and they ended up being even more delicious than I had anticipated. The tacos come topped with lettuce, tomato and cheese, which is my ideal taco toppings. The only thing that would have made it better would have been some sour cream but the chicken was surprisingly moist on its own. For a side, I chose the papitas and they was a great choice as the potatoes were seasoned well. Even with the lunch portion, I still could only eat one taco and the papitas before throwing in the towel and taking the second taco home. The chips and salsa are amazing here. At first I thought the chips looked a little thick but they were actually pretty flaky and tasty. The salsa had a bit of kick but it was manageable for even someone who doesn't handle spice well, like me. My boyfriend raved about the red chile, which he got on his breakfast burrito. Quite simply the perfect Mexican restaurant - hits all the categories - food, ambiance, music, service, portion size and quality. You will leave happy and full - trust me. My girlfriend had the ground beef chimichanga (she is a huge chimichanga fan and she was super satisfied) and I had the chicken stuffed sopapilla which was wonderful. Make sure to grab a side of sopapilla with honey! Funny side story - we sat outside (highly recommend doing this- they have a wonderful garden/patio!) and encountered a large wasp that wanted that some Mexican food too. We eventually had to relocate inside and the server was incredibly understanding and helped us switch tables and didn't make us feel bad for our phobia. I had the stuffed sopapilla with rice and beans. I was very disappointed with the rice. It tasted like medicine. not sure what spices they put in it, but it just wasn't good. . After I tasted the rice, I was just thrown off by the rest of the meal and didn't really like it . The portion sizes are really small for the prices. I think this place is overpriced for what they give you on a plate. I have had way better, Mexican food and other restaurants. don't think I will be back. read more

They have bands on Friday night which is a great way to enjoy their patio which has a waterfall and plenty of tables with umbrella tents for shade. Got here at 6pm on a Wednesday night to find they were closed with different hours on the door than what was shown online. Supposedly they closed at 4pm but maps said 7pm. First time here. Right off 4th Street. Dined with my family. Greeted by friendly staff. This place is the real deal! New Mexican cuisine at it's best. Enjoyed everything about this restaurant. They even have daily specials! From the food and dining area to the delicious food they serve. We were served freshly made chips and salsa. This salsa is no ordinary salsa. It was spicy for my taste buds. I have family that isn't into that red or green chili so they ordered the burger and fries, yes they have that too! I ordered the Carne Adovado enchiladas. Red chili on the side of course. Beans and rice were tasty and had a little kick. Ended the meal with freshly made sopapillas and honey. Always good to enjoy dinner with family. read more

Great New Mexican food and service. The patio in the spring and fall is so lovely, full of flowers, mature trees, and a nice little pond.

To start off I have eaten at this place a few times, but tonight ticked me off. The owner is to busy with her nose in recipes that she is asleep at the wheel. I asked specifically for the patio as I have a migraine. That was not even an option or it was ignored. Our waiter who has only been there a few weeks by his own admission is just that terrible or he was set up to fail by whom ever trains the wait staff. After ordering drinks it took them 17 minutes to bring 2 of the three drinks ordered and was told that the third which happens to be their only sugar free soda was not dispensing and was "being worked on" except it wasn't being worked on I was told " the person who fixes it has been really busy" that is not my problem. So I'm stuck drinking crappy tap water. It's disgusting!!! The food was good as it has been in the past. But unfortunately it was over shadowed by the service. I was lucky enough to get 1 glass of soda which miraculously was found by using a different fountain....imagine checking everywhere before telling your customer they can't figure it out... the waiter did not ask nor bring a second glass. The final thing is setting a bill on the table before you are even half way through your meal, you can say no rush but that is what that represents. Besides what if we wanted desert? It makes the customer feel like it is final. The restaurant has gone through several issues after Covid. They have even reduced hours and days. If they don't pay attention and they clearly are not, that will only get worse. I don't have to worry about it as this will be my last time here. We have Sadie's and el Bruno's. But the owner should care and pay a lot better attention. Also don't get me started on the fact they have a guitar player who is not very good at playing guitar. We came during December, and the restaurant was all decked out in charming Christmas decorations. There were also many paintings and other non-Christmas decorations along the walls. The dim lighting, small dining rooms, and welcoming staff made for a relaxing and refined experience. We both ordered the Carne Adovado plate. The meat was a bit dry, but the seasoning and the chili sauces were good. It also came with Mexican rice and refried beans, which were similarly tasty. The tortillas and the sopapaillas weren't very good, but we were fine skipping them and going carb-light. The whole meal was quite spicy, so we went through a lot of water! We were a bit apprehensive initially, given the slightly shifty location of the restaurant. But we ended up having a fine little lunch. Visit the Casa yourself, if decent New Mexican food in a warm and inviting environment is what you crave. read more

The green Chile is amazing, best in Albuquerque. The manager lady in the front watches you and the staff like a hawk to make sure they're not giving anything for free. It's uncomfortable and some staff has told us they feel the same way. They walk on egg shells around her. You can feel the tension. Ambiance is very nice, servers are always good. read more

I got a call from my wife and daughter that they were at Casa Benavidez and would like me to join them. I said I could be there in 15 minutes and to order for me. My wife called me and said they had ordered and I said that I was almost there. When I got to the door I was met by a woman that asked if I was part of the private party. I said no but the people I was meeting were already seated. The lady said I couldn't enter. I repeated that my party was seated and had already ordered and she told I still couldn't enter. I called my daughter and said that they wouldn't let me in and said let's go somewhere else. My wife told the server that they were leaving and why. The server apologized but still had the gall to charge them $9.77 for the chips and salsa. It's too bad because that was our go to restaurant. read more

I love Casa de Benavidez on 4th St in Los Ranchos just south of Paseo del Norte. Unfortunately, i don't get to eat there as often since i retired and don't live in the area. To the person who "complained" on Yelp that they took a party of 30 people there and only got one waitress and the restaurant wouldn't "split the checks", i don't think that Casa de Benavidez is equipped to handle such large parties and i know that they're short of staff. Perhaps, that group should have called them ahead to see if a crowd that large could be handled at the restaurant, if not they should have gone elsewhere, don't you think? read more

Took a work party here. I will start with the only negative comments we had, and none were about the food. They wouldn't let us split the check so it was a nightmare figuring out who owed what. They also were slow because they only gave us one waitress for thirty people. Now on to the good stuff...their food. The chips come out warm and are so good where the edges are a little charred. Their salsa ranks up there with Papa Nachos, Sadie's and El Bruno's. That's good company to be in. It's just not quite as hot as Sadie's or El Bruno's but really good flavor. Their carne adovada is one of the best and it is super spicy for those who like it hot. Their stuffed sopapillas are excellent. I tried the chicarrones one and those were the crispy, large chicarrones I had been looking for. All in all more than half the party ranked them as a five or high four. I rate this restaurant at more like a 3.5 stars. My food (chicken chimichanga, rice and pepita's) was very tasty but my son's beef enchiladas were pretty dry and hard to cut...unusual for enchiladas. I also found the fact that they only gave us one regular basket of chips and another tiny basket of chips for our table of 5...and never refilled any of them a bit unusual....the salsa was good though. The parking situation is also odd, you park at the back of the building and wind around on the walkway to the front. The last odd thing I found was the hours. We arrived at 6 and realized they closed at 8, what restaurant that serves dinner closes THAT early?! I really found that odd. read more

I wish the food was as good as the setting and the service. Sadly the food is inconsistent. I've had good meals and meals that were Meh. Last night it was disappointing. Our waitress was great - all the orders came out quickly and correctly. We were able to sit and socialize without being rushed out, which was nice. But my Chile Rellenos were so heavily battered it was hard to find the filling. The rice and beans were bland. The upside - chips are fresh and warm - the salsa is spicy. It was still warm out that morning, so the back patio was quite nice. The food wasn't fancy, but it was good. My only complaint would be the table we were at rocked like a seesaw. I love the atmosphere. Great bar and better patio, but I felt like I didn't really get what I paid for. The guac was half shredded lettuce. At nine bucks a dish that's borderline offensive. The ground beef enchiladas I got were also about a third empty. The Margarita had a good flavor, but was weak. Service was slow despite the place being almost empty. If the food weren't such good quality, I'd probably never go back. Definitely better than Sadie's and El Pinto, but I can't justify going on a regular basis due to the fact that I'm afraid I'll only be getting part of the meal I paid for. So I'm glad I waited until the next day to post this so I did not have to update my review. Consider this review informational as well as a warning... Anyways onward with this experience: Went to lunch here yesterday with my mom and two nieces. The two older women who looked like they manage the place were cautiously purveying the restaurant-okay not a big deal. Until we are served literally the smallest basket or chips for 4 people, there are maybe 8 chips inside the basket, really. So we asked for more chips and salsa and the waitress told us we would have to pay extra (to which we obliged) and my mom, a salsa aficionado, requested an extra container of salsa. We were told that she wasn't allowed to fill up the salsa all the way that they were sticklers when it came to that and she essentially snuck us a small extra container. We tried ordering salads before our meals and they don't carry those, so heads up. Another big downside was that it was like pulling teeth to get refills on our beverages. However I did notice that other tables were given a carafe of iced tea or water when we were not so that's a miss on their part especially for how the owners or managers were constantly watching. Lastly the food was below sub par, which is very unfortunate considering we got take out from here many months ago and it was super good. This time all of our Chile rellenos were completely soggy and I'm sure mine were even undercooked because of how the breading looked milky/slimy. The whole meal was not thoughtfully prepared whatsoever with an exorbitant amount of tomato sauce in the rice making it gummy, the beans were okay and the tacos were lackluster with hardly any chicken in them. We were given the bill and I asked about sopapillas since they are customary to come with dinners and she said "oh, yeah did you want those? I can get those to go". Of course we did and seeing how other tables were given those was a bit insulting at this point but we ate them there anyhow. Our bill was a bit over $100 dollars with a generous tip for the waitress because even though our experience was not great in any way we understand people are struggling and it's not as much as the waitress' fault as it is the owners who aren't running this place correctly. For the amount we spent, we should have been at least satisfied and taken care of. But instead we left like we were unwanted and uncared for during our meal, especially with having to ask for refills on items was just painstakingly uncomfortable! This has never happened at El Pinto or other restaurants such as that. Definitely spend your money elsewhere to avoid getting side eyes and upcharges for petty things that don't cost much for a business to provide. And especially take your business somewhere else for the food sake, this place has gone down hill and they must be struggling. We all left feeling like what the hell happened in there and no one liked the food very much, in fact we said let's never come here again for that awful experience and not very good quality food. My nieces especially did not eat their plates which was kind of sad because they were excited to try this place originally. Lastly, the most regretful part of this is that after dropping my nieces off, my mom and I began to get stomach aches. Mine progressed to cramping all night and very early this morning I had diarrhea from this meal. This was such an awful experience that not only left us out of our money but gave me a pretty bad case of stomach and digestion issues. Unsure what bacteria I consumed there considering I did not use their restrooms while there it's concerning. But never again- this was beyond horrible. read more
