Bacon breakfast burrito with red chile on the side

I feel like this review is long overdue! I moved back to Albuquerque a few years ago after 20 years away and moved into a neighborhood close to some highly regarded New Mexican restaurants in NE Albuquerque. I love exploring new restaurants I've never tried before, but time and time again I keep coming back to Casa De Benavides, especially for breakfast. The food is great, but the Chile is exceptional! It's rich in flavor, with the perfect amount of heat! Fun fact: My family hosted Easter this year and we decided to add a New Mexican flair to our Easter dinner. All of our family is very opinionated about who has the best red chile in the city, so we decided to do a blind taste test of red chile from some of the most popular NM restaurants in town. Only my wife and I knew which restaurant the Chile's came from and Casa De Benavides won by an overwhelmingly majority! I would put their chile up against any restaurant in the city and wouldn't think twice! IYKYK and for those who have never been, please try and enjoy my friends!

Service: Excellent waiters and staff. Super attentive and helpful. We had to wait 20 min for a seat but the place was only 1/3 full - seemed like maybe some staffing/management issues. Ambiance: Inside space was a little dark but the fountain in the foyer is neat. Overall a fine space inside. Food: We got a sopapailla burger which was decent but left a little to be desired. The sopapaillas are tasty but don't make good hamburger buns - better as a separate treat. Red Chile was excellent but warning that it is quite rich. It has a distinctive taste though that you can only get in NM.

The usual dilemma - where to eat? So here we are. We get a seat indoors near the window, With a great view of a pond with waterfalls and fish oblivious to the going's on around them. A quick look at the menu and guacamole comes into view, sounded good so it gets ordered. An ample mount of the green stuff arrive with chips and green chile salsa. Entrees ordered as we noshed on the chips. The fajitas came out sizzling - the skillet hot. The fajitas sizzled for 10 minutes after being served. A little too salty for my taste. But I am sensitive to salt. My chimichanga was a nice golden brown, not over cooked. It was stuffed with meat and cheese and topped with more cheese. Add excellent service and you get a good meal. You owe it to yourself to check this place out - if for nothing else the atmosphere and old style adobe looking walls surrounding the outdoor seat

Highly recommend this New Mexican style old-school restaurant. The service is fantastic. The food is excellent. However, recognize they don't take reservations and they get pretty busy in the evening. If you're going on Friday, go early. The good news is that they've got a nice waiting area and an excellent selection of tequila and local brews. I've posted a few pictures of the menu, however, they are known for their sopapilla burger of which I highly recommend smothered red and green chili. Price is reasonable! And there is entertainment on the patio on Fridays.

I've been wanting to come here since last year. Unfortunately, the patio was still closed when I came last Monday (it was voted as one of the best patios in ABQ during COVID) and wouldn't be open until at least May 1st. We were seated in the sunroom, with a view of the patio however and you could see the koi swimming around. The hours have been a little strange and I know they're short staffed. We had planned on making it for "breakfast' as it's only served until 12. We left a little later than planned, went through the to go entrance, and had trouble finding a handicap spot. So, by the time we got in and sat down, it was a few minutes past 12, and they had to check with the cooks to see if they would still be willing to make breakfast. Food came out quickly. My mom got the el mexicano omelette with tomatoes and onion (served with hashbrowns). The omelette was a good size, but she thought the flavor was just okay. I got the chicharron breakfast burrito (eggs, green on the side, beans, chicharron, and hashbrown). The burrito was hot (temperature-wise) on the inside. The chile was somewhat mild, although had a little bit of a kick in a few bites. Out of the chicharron burrito tour I've done in tonw, I'd say this ranked in the top 3, as the chicharron was crisp and not overly chewy. We also got chips and salsa brought to our table. Our waitress didn't pay a lot of attention to us, as our waters went unfilled, but she did have several other tables. The decor is a little outdated, but still has a comfortable atmosphere. I will be back, even just to have a coconut margarita on the patio. 2023 #7

I am really enjoying Casa De Benevidez for their lunch specials lately. It's not too far from work and everything is consistent and good. I really like the way they cook their papas. The beans have a little hint of bacon? Chili is good. I have no complaints except you cant order lunch specials togo. The atmosphere is also really nice and if you are sitting near the little pond its a great view. Lunch usually costs me 15.00 with tip.

Excellent traditional Mexican food for very reasonable prices. Patio is small but as nice as el Pinto for 1/4 the cost!

Great New Mexican food and service. The patio in the spring and fall is so lovely, full of flowers, mature trees, and a nice little pond.

Update 13apr19 - In case anyone else is interested, the chile sauces and refried beans are NOT vegetarian. There is no "vegetarian" section on the menu either. Are the chiles…

I am not sure Roberta - but I remember seeing a vegetarian section on their menu so that would probably be an option.

Ordered cold beer and cocktails after we were seated inside Lotsa flies.....we get it....pretty much an open-air restaurant this time of year They did set a spinner on our table which helped. Was decently cool inside too I have been wanting to try their Kizer beef and pork offerings so i threw down on a cheeseburger (hard to not order New Mexican food here) But that burger was perfect! Delicious I recommend and was plenty big Of course i dropped a big spoonful of green chile on it And the green chile strip appetizer was outstanding Summer at El Pinto. Enjoy!

I had the house special chili ribs and the ribs aren't flavorful. There is no distinctive taste to these ribs but chilied. But since the chili is tasteless themselves, it doesn't contribute to the overall flavor of the ribs anyway. 2/5 Stuff sopadillas with beef is very large and filling. For the lunch menu, the price is rather affordable for how much food I ordered. The tastes? I can't tell because it is comparable to any other restaurants. Nothing really stands out to me. 4/5 The regular sopadilla with honey as a side dish is amazing and you can't really go wrong with sopadilla and honey 5/5. Chips and salsa is continuously refilled as requested. Overall service is average, with water refill being done per request, not automatically. I personally would take tourists here to experience the cute vibe of New Mexico that this restaurant gives: a cute brunch with the ladies, a nice hang out and gathering with friends.
