My friend loves red chile & thinks this is one of the best in town , we've been here once before & happy to return . Big menu with many choices . My friend had the red chile chimichanga enchilada style meeting his high expectations. Also happy to order green corn tamales to go for his wife . I had one of several lunch specials ( 12.99$ ) . I had the first one A ?) Machaca taco , cheese enchilada, & a hardy bean tostada loaded with greens & more, all very tasty ! I was impressed with the enchilada sauce & all loaded with a cheese both yellow & white combo . A neighboring table ordered a huge nacho like volcano of loaded beef & topped with a large guacamole on top like a green snow capped mountain , they both were in awe ( pic added ). I will never understand the low reviews for this spot. Their food is phenomenal. I have been here 3 times now and have never been disappointed once. From the Mexican staples like the beans, rice, and salsa (oh my god, the salsa is so good, I eat almost an entire bowl of it with chips before my food even comes out...) to the more complex dishes like fajitas and breakfast dishes, it's all great. I saw another reviewer say that their enchilada sauce tasted like canned tomato sauce and I just wanted to say - what kind of tomato sauce are you buying? I want some of it! It's good enchilada sauce. When I had the steak fajitas, they were tender and very flavorful while still being medium rare in the middle. Amazing. I also just got the huevos vaqueros from their new brunch menu, and decided to add birria to it for extra. It was insanely delicious, and the presentation was beautiful! The service matches up to their food, too - I wish I learned his name, but the tall softspoken Mexican man is an amazing waiter. Very attentive, patient, and timely. We have had him twice so far, and he has always excelled. Don't get me started on their drinks. I've had a few of their margaritas and they are top-notch. I spoke with the owner, Kevin, and learned that they only use high quality triple secs and tequilas, which explains why their drinks are so fresh and flavorful without the harshness that cheaper liquors and liquers have. Everyone I have brought here have also loved their drinks. This place is a gem - if you've had a bad experience, give it another chance. Or maybe you just don't know what good Mexican food is. Casa del Rio is a great place to eat. They have amazing food at reasonable prices. I have eaten there many times over the years and enjoy the chimichangas, tacos, taco salad, cheese crisp, Mexican pizza, fruit chimichangas, and chips and salsa. I have never had a meal that I didn't love. The hardest part is choosing what to eat because everything is so good! Service is fast and friendly and the booths are comfortable. I have been coming here for many many years. My whole family has. My mom moved away a couple years ago we hadn't been in a while. Tonight my mom was in town and we decided to come here like old times. My mom and I shared the tostada grande with beef on half and guac on side (something we have ordered alot) My daughter got shredded beef mini chimis. The tostada wasn't just bland but didn't taste right. Like sour or something and the meat didn't taste like meat. Reminded me of Taco bell meat. The guacamole was also not very pleasant. Im not sure there was any avacado it. It tasted like metal and it was very thick like a whip. My daughter said her mini chimis were fine. We let our server know we were not happy with our meal and he came back and said he could give us 20% off. Our server was very nice and friendly and took care of us service wise. Having been on a search for a flavorful Mexican food restaurant, I thought I'd try Casa Del Rio. It seemed to have the promise of good food for as many years as they've been in business! However, my experience was lacking in so many areas. First, we waited for over an hour for our food to arrive. We didn't even receive any refills on soda, chips, and salsa. We had one helping and were ignored. Once our food did arrive, our server checked on us once and we had to flag her down when we needed something. The second thing that was lacking was the enchilada sauce. It was very bland. It honestly tasted like tomato sauce out of a can. They said us with our menus, but no Sonoran restaurant week menu once we asked for it though they went to the back of the restaurant and got us one. The restaurant has a diner like feel with an older audience. It is extremely large as there are two other rooms outside of the large dining room that you walk into upon entry. I believe there is live music, though I'm not sure as it would've been from the other room. However, it sounded as though it was live. I wasn't a fan of the music though. I did enjoy a couple of the songs. My husband ordered a burrito and I ordered from the Sonoran restaurant week menu. Love that they bring out chips and salsa upon seating you. The salsa is good! My husband's burrito had a great presentation, however, the meat was pretty salty and had a strong pepper flavor as well. Also, there's nothing else inside the burrito outside of the meat. From my order, I felt the tortilla soup could've had more substance to it. I'm used to tortilla soup having rice, chicken, cheese, sometimes avocado or lime. However, this one had only chicken and cheese. It also had tortilla strips however they were already soggy and sunk within the soup when it was brought to the table. The soup was also pretty salty. I ordered the fajitas for the entrée, which came with beans and rice as well. The meat came out sizzling hot, and the side had a good portion. This entree tasted okay. The dessert was way bigger than I thought, and I chose the blueberry from a choice of cherry, blueberry, and apple. I felt this had a nice presentation and had a perfect golden toast. Some friends and I went here for an early supper this week. We were seated in the middle section of the restaurant, so were able to have conversation with each other, even when the live music began. I ordered a taco salad with ground beef. It looked delicious and didn't disappoint. It was flavorful, with lots of bright and tasty items on top. I was hesitant to go here with the mixed reviews, but the most recent 3 elite reviews of 4+ starts swayed me. I should have listened to my gut and not gone. The only redeeming quality of this restaurant is the service, everything else fell flat. We got free chips and salsa for the table, which was under-salted, but solid enough. My friend got chicken enchiladas and I got a taco salad with chicken. We both agreed that the chicken was incredibly bland, making the whole meal itself flavorless. The taco salad had shredded lettuce, beans, shredded cheese, sour cream, and a little bit of diced tomatoes, no onions nor cilantro. I drowned it in salsa for some extra flavor, but it still was meh. My friend's enchilada sauce tasted like tomato paste with no seasoning, so the shredded cheese was essentially the only thing giving it any flavor. If you want some bland tex-mex Mexican food, this is your spot. However, if you want something authentic with flavor and spice, do not go here. read more

We used to go to Casa Del Rio rather frequently when my mother-in-law was alive but we have only gone infrequently for years. I went there this day with a friend who goes there frequently. Anyway, back to my experience. I ordered a Combination Plate No. 1 which I would judge as average for Tucson and a cheese crisp which I haven't had there before. I expected it would be on a standard tortilla. It came with abundant cheese but the tortilla was not like any I had ever had before. I would describe it as cheese broiled on a pie crust. No crispiness at all and difficult to pick up without breaking into pieces. The good to balance the not so good... the new waitress (I forgot her name) was excellent! Their salsa is good and they are generous with the chips and salsa refills, unlike some other places. Their prices are reasonable. The ambiance is old fashioned in a good way. I've been disappointed with them the last couple times we visited over the past year and today wasn't any better. I ordered the Albondigas Soup and while menu described it as a special vegetable soup with meatballs, there was no vegetables other than a bit of cilantro and a few bits of red bell pepper? Plenty of meatballs in a bowl of weak broth and a sprinkling of rice. I added the salsa that was on the tables for the chips to give the soup some flavor! When I asked our waiter, Jorge, about the lack of vegetables he told me it didn't come with vegetables. (Not what the menu described Jorge!) I asked for corn tortillas and received flour tortillas. When I reminded him I had asked for corn tortillas he did bring it right out. I didn't realize I would have to pay additional for corn tortillas though. This is the first time Casa del Rio was a disappointment. Something was up with the salsa. That was way hot. The guacamole looks like a paste that came out of a bag. The last time I got the ground beef burrito enchilada style and the beef was nice and soft with strong spices. A great dish overall. The rice and beans were good, but it's hard to find bad rice and beans. For delivery they add a bag of chips and a nice sized container of salsa which is a nice touch. I read through a lot of the lower rating reviews and most seem to not like the service and the wait time for the food. The tortilla soup was filled with chicken, tortilla strips, cheese and a flavorful broth. My husband and I each had the number three with a good cheese enchilada and a nice machaca taco (taco shell was pretty standard wish it had been fresh fried), and a bean tostada with a ton of refried beans. I'm not sure if it's always this way or perhaps a mistake but wow. . After trying to be an adult and eat my meal anyway, I got about 5 bites in and my tongue and stomach hurt- and I love a good amount of salt on meals. When he tried a bite with a sliver of steak, he immediately went for his water to choke it down. I walked in ready to give a good and proper review after from how much this place was talked-up. His meal: he said the taste was decent but not the same as years ago. His issue was that the cheese was almost plastic-like. He would chew it up and it would turn into a chewy ball in his mouth, so he had to scrape the "cheese" off of the rest of his meal. I wanted to love this place the way he used to, but we walked out of this place bloated and unsatisfied.
