I have been here 2 previous times with fair service, but good food. Thus trip, I arrived on a Tuesday night 38 minutes prior to the posted closing time at the entrance and online and was turned away despite 22 patrons eating inside and outside due to "we close early sometimes and tonight we are". After I said I promise you I will order, eat and be gone by the posted closing time and before all of your other patrons I was told "what's not clear about we are closing early"? Plenty of other places to eat at on the River Walk and I am in 2-4 nights 3-4 times a year, so your loss. read more

Beer was Hot Food was cold. Chili con carne was made with chili dog sauce. Pathetic excuse for a Mexican restaurant. Shut this place down. Rethink what you want to bring and cater to that. Casa Rio Restaurant was just what a weary tourists to San Antonio need. It was located on the Riverwalk, had a great selection of TexMex foods, they tasted delicious and was priced reasonably. Casa Rio met all my requirements for a sleepy midweek luncheon. Well done! read more

We sort of stumbled into this place while walking around RiverWalk and were happy to learn that it is the oldest restaurant on the water. We sat outside to enjoy the River experience but be prepared to "participate" with the local wildlife. Between the ducks and the pigeons, there is no shortage of creatures waiting with anticipation to gobble up and scraps you happen to drop and they quickly land on the table when you get up to leave. It took a few minutes for our server to make his way to take our order and bring drinks but the food came out super quick. The salsa is on the spicy side so if you can't handle heat, be prepared. We stuck with standard options going with chicken soft tacos and commerce street tacos. The chicken was a little bland so the salsa was a welcome addition to the tacos but the rice and beans were good. The street tacos were pretty good as well but given the sheer volume of people they move in and out, they really do a great job overall. If you are in San Antonio and want true local & original fare, you need to put Casa Rio on the list. read more

View is fantastic if you can get a good spot outside right by the river. Once you do get a server, the server we had at least was extremely attentive and responsive to what we needed. Food is subpar to par at best. But price is decent so it evens out a bit. If you're here for the food, I'd skip and try a restaurant nearby that rated better. The river barge operator really sells you on this place because it's been here since the beginning so it has historical significance. read more

I'd you've ever seen pictures of the San Antonio River Walk, you've seen those colorful umbrellas over tables along the River. That's Casa Rio. So naturally, we had to eat here. Especially since it's kind of the place that started what is now River Walk. You can't beat the atmosphere. They also have indoor seating, quick if you get a window table upstairs you could have the view and beat the heat in the hot summer months. We got lucky and got a table right away (the beauty of visiting off season). It's so much fun to people watch while you eat! The food is solid, nothing great, but in my opinion the overall package makes this a must try. I had a small bit of their chili con carne from my husbands plate and I would return just to eat that! It was really good, definitely a standout on the menu. Their margaritas (we had virgin) are also really good and obviously freshly made and not with store bought margarita mix. read more

I was recommended by a local to check out the oldest Tex-Mex restaurant on the riverwalk. What a disappointment! To start with the positive, the staff were friendly and attentive, frequently coming by to refill drinks. Additionally, the location on the riverwalk is convenient and offers nice views in the shade. While the service was delightfully hospitable, the food left much to be desired. The chips tasted like store bought Tostitos and salsa had to have come from a jar. The beef enchiladas arrived in a golden sea of grease. The enchilada sauce was overflowing off the plate which made a mess. I can usually stomach to eat low quality food, but even this was too much to handle. My friend's beef quesadilla was bland and dry. The guacamole that came with his meal had started to turn brown. If you do find yourself at Casa Rio, be sure to find a table inside. The outdoor seating attracted a large flock of pigeons, one of which managed to target me with laser-like precision and drop a deuce on my shirt. Subsequent to this avian attack, it became apparent that unbussed tables were covered with pigeons welcoming themselves to table scraps. Restaurant staff did not seem to give these tables a thorough wipe down or disinfecting. This may be the oldest and most established restaurant on the riverwalk but clearly this place is well past its prime. read more

It is right on the river, so ambience was great. We were able to do lots of people watching. Service OK, but nothing exceptional. Food subpar. I ordered a virgin margarita which was basically blended ice with a squirt of lime juice. My wife had the shrimp tacos and said they were just OK. I ordered the cheese enchiladas and tried to substitute the tomatillos sauce, and was told no. The gravy used was subpar. We used to live in SA so suppose we had higher expectations. Would not do a repeat here. read more

We heard that this was one of the oldest restaurants on the river walk so we decided to give it a try. I wasn't really impressed by the flavor of my deluxe dinner and didn't eat half of it. Our waitress was very attentive, the place was clean and very busy with an hour wait. The chips and salsa were good as was the sweet tea. They do give you a complimentary picture of your group but they do sell photo packages. I don't think I'd go there again unless someone else decided to go because San Antonio has plenty of great food everywhere. It's a one time, check it out deal for me, but it depends on your taste buds. read more

First restaurant to open on the river walk it is a must! It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. We were about to leave town on Wednesday, and decided to go down for late "breakfast" since they open at 11am. Weather was great and we got a table outside. Service was fast and friendly. We had shrimp tacos and the Deluxe dinner plate. The deluxe came with chips and queso, guacamole, a taco, an enchilada, a tamale and rice and beans. Good size portions. I had to try their flan. Nice environment and plenty of shady seating along the Riverwalk. Definitely more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican cuisine (as far as San Antonio/South Texans would attest to), but plenty of options to choose from on both the food and drink menu. If you're lucky, you'll get a mariachi group playing outside! Chips and salsa (complimentary of course) came in good portion sizes. I ordered the chicken enchiladas ($~13), and they were tasty. You can get them in multiple sauces, which I'd recommend if you want to try a variety of spices! The rice and beans were average. You may see a few birds pecking around in between tables being cleaned, as I'm sure they're fed by many visitors and children! Thankfully didn't bother us too much. We saw some other guests who were a bit surprised. read more

It is a nice establishment on the Riverwalk with a great view. It is a bit pricey with large portions. You truly are going for the ambience. The food is your tropics Mexican restaurant food that is not homemade. So you are getting a very watered down version of traditional Mexican food. This food is suitable for people who have a sensitive palette. Be prepared to pay a lot, and have food that is so so. The service is nice tho and place is clean for how many people it services. read more

Nice Mexican food here, I had some beef enchiladas that came with rice and beans. It was nothing special for me trying this place but my grandma wanted to try it because her friend recommended to try it while we were visiting San Antonio because it's historic. Beard Hair in food :( Server said he would take my meal off the ticket and did. He apologized for the hair. Other than that, Mexican food is average at Casa Rio. It met the standard until I found the hair. It is very inexpensive, the least I've spent on food on the riverwalk (before removing my meal) Honestly, just go up above and you'll do better. Less pigeons to. Sat outside b/c the mariachi horn was very loud inside. It started raining but they have umbrellas over each table. read more

I would recommend this place because it is the "original restaurant" on Riverwalk. 80 years old. Very southwestern theme. You can definitely get better Tex Mex food elsewhere. Waiters would nice but hard to get their attention. It's novel and a place you can say you went to. read more

Pros: Location, catered to our Lab, chips and salsa were good as was the guacamole and queso, great margaritas. Cons: Menu clearly says the trio includes 'queso, guacamole, chips and salsa' but Alexander added $2 to our bill for chips and salsa. Our bill came to $36 and Alexander brought us $63 change, 2 $20's, 2 $10's and 3 $1's. That was the only change I had and I was not going to leave a $10 tip on a $36 bill. Sorry, Alexander, your tip would've been more had you 1) not charged us for something you shouldn't have and 2) had given us smaller bills. read more

I had the Commerce Street Tacos. I'm usually pretty generous with my ratings. The location in the river walk was great. The place looked clean and amazing The workers were amazing and friendly. But the food. It came out so fast that it made me question it. The beans were hot and delicious. The beef in the tacos was warm at best. I dunno. Something was just missing. Service? Yeah right. My wife and I chose to come here for lunch. We're only here for a few days so our choices are somewhat limited because we don't have a lot of time. Screwed this one up. Read some reviews and it seemed like everybody enjoyed the experience and the food. I don't know what happened. Must've been employee or something? We did really enjoy sitting by the water watching the ducks fight over tortilla chips and whatever else is floating around. We had this rude ass lady that barely recognized our existence. We waited forever to get water. Just got worse from there. We tried to order a cocktail because it seemed like people enjoyed the margaritas. we didn't have a cocktail menu so we asked if we could have one, the lady said he didn't use the QR code and then walked away for like 20 minutes. We were Parr when we had the opportunity order Margarita. I did a traditional my wife did a skinny. Mine was manageable. Hers was awful. Somewhat matched the personality of the weight staff.! My wife ordered a taco salad and didn't choose one of the dressings that was listed as an option , asked for salsa dressing for a taco salad would seem absolutely fitting. Turned into an argument because that wasn't listed and it was supposed to be an extra. After a wrestling match, I feel like we won and get salsa. Lo and behold was our last win of the day. We got looked at, walked by food came out wrong. Had to ask for water had to ask for another drink clear across the sidewalk so unprofessional I would not recommend. read more

We waited 45 minutes to get a table. Then I was so dissappointed to get a nacho that is extremely salty. It doesn't look like a nacho. It looked like they fried up a big tortilla add a big layer of bean and melted cheese and add salty meat. Also, they will take some pictures of you and say it is free but they will give you 1 picture and charge you for the other pictures. read more

History

Established in 1946.

Casa Rio, founded in 1946 by Alfred F Beyer, sits on land first granted title in 1777 by the King of Spain, The hacienda built during the Spanish Colonial period became the core of the new business. The cedar door and window lintels, the fireplace, and thick limestone walls are still evident inside the builiding. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business to face and take advantage of the unique river setting. Mr. Beyer's use of canoes, gondolas, and paddle boats, evolving into tour and dinner boats, had a beginning here and helped create the Riverwalk of today.

I went with the chili con carne, and let me tell you, this was Texas chili in its purest form: a glorious mountain of pork with a hint of sauce. Flavor-wise, it leaned more towards "carne con chili" than the other way around, but a touch more seasoning would've sealed the deal. Next up: the shrimp cocktail. After a long, tiring day, I stopped by Casa Rio Restaurant, and wow, what a great find! It's perfectly situated right on the San Antonio Riverwalk, which makes the location unbeatable. We showed up around 6:00 PM, and even though it was super busy, there was still plenty of space to sit--both on the first and second levels. The vibe is lively and colorful, with that classic Riverwalk charm, and the natural light reflecting off the water just adds to the experience. I went for the chicken fajita, and it didn't disappoint. The portion size was generous, which I always love, and it tasted good--authentic Mexican flavors with tender chicken and all the fixings. It's a little on the expensive side, but I totally get it given the prime location. You're paying for the experience as much as the food, and it felt worth it for a treat after a long day. The service was solid too--friendly and attentive despite how packed the place was. It's a strong 4 stars for me. Our server seemed rushed the entire time, making us feel unwelcome. The biggest disappointment was when I requested a small dessert with a candle for my husband's birthday, and the server flat-out refused. I escalated my concern to the manager, and while I'm unsure if any action was taken, they instead arranged for mariachis to sing a birthday song. I have been going to Casa Rio for years and make it a point to stop in anytime I'm near San Antonio. The service is inviting and staff treats you like family. The avocado Margaritas are stiff, but flavorful. My favorite thing, and the dish you must try, is the Chile relleno. It's a dish that could easily feed 2 people and comes with their house made barracho beans that are the best I've ever had. Parking can be tricky, but it's downtown on the Riverwalk, which means it's a great place to take a stroll before or after your meal. I was going to Casa Rio a few days ago as I have heard it is a great place to eat but before I could even check in to get a table I got discouraged from eating there as I witnessed on of the management crew, I assume that's who they were it was an older white lady with short red hair, getting after one of the hosts over a sign. It was a sign there was no reason to get that mad and I feel so much pity for the host there to be treated so poorly. Honestly that lady should be fired for making not only the host but consumers feel so atrocious. Definitely not gonna go back there anytime soon. read more

This restaurant is very cute and has an authentic style to the Mexican culture. The service is great and quick! There is a photographer who walks around and asks if you want a picture, he gives you 1 for free and then you have the option to buy from 4 options that he gives you. We ended up getting the free one and buying 2, which was great since my bf and I needed someone else to take our picture on his trip. So It worked out perfect! This is a Class A TOURIST TRAP!! Come here if you want to eat horrendously terrible food, be accompanied by extremely vicious hungry birds that'll swarm, bite, and crap all over you if you feed them, and spend your entire vacation fund at one place. Been eating at this place since I was a kid. Always seems to be pretty consistent. Its not the best Mexican food you have eatin' but it is good and not very pricey. The best thing about this place is the location. Great to take visitors and guests. Great place to people watch. I recommend the enchiladas or chalupas. One of the cheapest places to eat on the Riverwalk, and their salsa is to die for! The food is plentiful, and good - my favorite are the cheese enchiladas, but everything we've ordered has been great so far, and we've gone at least 4 or 5 times over the last few years. Their salsa is great, with just the right amount of bite, the enchiladas are awesome, and service is always corteous, but if some of their things wouldn't be out of place in a Taco Bell menu if you know what I mean, just stick with the green echiladas and you'll be happy. Well, some things never change. Unfortunately Casa Rio has NEVER been very good. So don't try it and don't eat at Rio Rio either. I've lived in San Antonio for years and neither rate. Don't know of any good mexican food on the river, La Margarita in Market Square is good, but Mi Tierra has gone down hill too. read more
