Genuine Southern cooking with a sophisticated twist. Just spent 5 days in Wilmington visiting family (originally from NY who moved there yrs ago). My daughter and I are both accomplished cooks (she an incredible baker) who love this regional style food; who wouldn't? She was excited to check this place out. The Cast Iron was just down the road and my cousin highly recommended it. I do not eat any kind of red meat, pork etc.. Cast Iron had plenty of options nonetheless despite a heavy influence of southern favored meats. The fried green tomatoes was a nice starter for brunch. I chose a simple eggs, cheese grits, fried chicken tenderloin and biscuit breakfast. They cooked my eggs exactly the way I like; over easy, soft cooked runny yolks. Grits were yum. My daughter chose the Dirty South Biscuit; a hefty dose of southern comfort on a biscuit w fried chicken tenderloin, bacon, muenster &pepper jack cheese, an egg covered in sausage gravy. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, not to mention competent. I wish some other people who wait on tables elsewhere would learn such skills. Success has its perils. Food has always been great here but the dispassionate service seems to be a direct result of success. Used call ahead check in for party of four and was told 45 minutes. At 40 minutes was told 25 more minutes. At one hour told 30 minutes. Ultimately was seated at two hours. Staff seemed annoyed by my presence. No apologies. When you have two little kids that are hungry, wildly inaccurate estimates are unacceptable. read more

Went for breakfast . Weather was beautiful so we sat outside on the front patio. The place doesn't open until 8:00 so early risers be warned. Service was prompt and friendly. We ordered the vegetable omelet and pancake, along w another omelet and the cauliflower grits. Everything was good, the veggie omelet was packed w veggies, including plenty of spinach. Great spot for brunch! Have been here a couple of times now for Saturday brunch and it never disappoints. If you go on Saturday or Sunday, there will probably be a bit of a wait but the good news is they have coffee, tea, and fruit infused water for those who are waiting. Great service. Ask anyone, I usually have nothing but good things to say about this business however my last two experiences have left me feeling annoyed. I always order the pulled pork hash with red gravy - without eggs because I am allergic. Most restaurants do not change the price when you omit key components but I don't think it's too much to ask to increase another portion of the set up. Anyway the last three times I have ordered this menu item the plate has been prepared with a heaping amount of meat and only a small handful of potatoes. Last time this happened I had picked the order up for delivery. Whoever answered the phone apologized and said I had to request more potatoes next time.. which I think is ridiculous. If the menu item is pulled pork hash, then there should be more than four potatoes. So since this is one of my favorite places for brunch, I brought a large group of friends last Sunday. We did call ahead seating and our table was ready when I arrived to meet the rest of the group. I decided to branch out from my usual and ordered the frog leg special. The waitress neglected to mention the size so when it arrived I realized I would need more food so I ordered the corn beef hash. It was brought out quickly on a small side plate with a huge portion of corn beef and three potatoes. Sorry but this is unacceptable. I love Cast Iron Kitchen but the portion of some of the dishes is not fair to paying customers. I notified an employee who brought me more potatoes no questions asked, however I don't understand why this same issue keeps happening. Do I really need to ask the kitchen to count the potatoes before sending the dish out? Overall I am just annoyed an frustrated. I love the food, everything was delicious as usual but if the portion issues keep happening I will not be back. read more

The whole experience was not a good one. Wish I would have turned back after politely asking if we were on the wait list after watching a couple of groups get seated ahead of us and being told "We were not there ahead of them" in a tone that was just upsetting. The hostess later turned that around with conversation and explanation as we were seated. After we returned home, I then called to make a concern to the owner that the fruit cup had moldy grapes in it. The Rueben had a very soggy bottom, and the bread did not look like rye. I did finish the Rueben because it did not taste good. I have been drinking water to get the taste out of my mouth and brushing teeth, but it persists. I was told by the owner that "corned beef is salty, that is corned beef". Ok. I was just calling to give constructive criticism and told the owner I did not want a refund, but I felt nauseated after eating there. My other guest also did not like their food and we never got to those specifics. Our party did not want to make a scene and complain there after the experience checking in. I also did not want to take time away from my family to complain while there and chose to do it in private with specifics. My concerns were not received well, and I was told "we are done here, and she hung up." Oh, and ask about how much milk cost before you order it, it is $3.25 for a little child size carton. That was a whole other discussion. I received a lecture of how much milk cost. read more

Great way to end our trip to Wrightsville! Went with another couple for breakfast, and the wait was pretty long (45 minutes), but I am always willing to wait for good food. My husband always orders the equivalent to three breakfasts, he got a huge pancake, side of corned beef hash, and a meal that comprised of bacon, eggs, hash browns, and a biscuit. The biscuit was my favorite part of his meal, so buttery and delicious. I got the chicken and waffles, the chicken was crisp, waffles were good. I was not a fan of the bourbon maple syrup and the bacon jam didn't really add anything to the meal. Overall, a delicious breakfast! The couple we were with ordered corned beef hash and southern chicken biscuit sandwich, they seemed super happy. It should be noted that this place makes REAL corned beef hash, not that canned stuff you often see other places. Went in for Sunday brunch a little later than planned, so we did have to wait, but it was worth it. She had the Dirty South biscuit with eggs over medium. I had the Red Eye pulled pork hash with eggs over medium. We also shared a waffle with some amazing cinnamon butter. Food came out fast even though they were packed. It was incredible. My fiancé and I are originally from Chesapeake, VA and if you're familiar with that area there is an aw some breakfast/brunch/dinner place there called The Egg Bistro. Their breakfast menu is amazing and something we have been crying about missing since we've moved down here. The Cast Iron Kitchen is going to become our new replacement as this place is just as good when it comes to the food. The drinks are better at The Egg, but the food is just as good here. My fiancé got the Dirty South Biscuit which was so savory and perfectly cooked and I got their Easter special Crab Benedict. Best crab cake I've ever had, no fillers, just pure sweet lump crab meat. Visited here after leaving Surf city last week. I really hoped the Yelp reviews weren't overhyping this place. Happily they weren't. I got there at a good time in Sunday morning and was able to get a seat at the counter. Loved the decor and all of the smells of the deliciousness they were cooking up. I settled on the chicken and waffles and made an excellent decision. Portion, taste and overall tasty goodness was spot on. Enjoyed great service too. Okay-dining experience. Drove by on a Saturday morning and saw they were packed, so we figured we would try it during the week when they weren't so busy. The service was good, but when asking for no pork on a specific sandwich, we were told "the kitchen does not make modifications." When we told her it was for religious reasons, she said she could check. They DID take make it without bacon, but I find that situation strange. We were not asking for a substitute, just to not have it. Shouldn't have even been a question. Also, when our food arrived at the table, half of our meals were cold. I ordered a waffle and asked for a side of strawberries. Apparently a "side" it one strawberry cut into four....which I feel is a joke. Again, it was an okay-dining experience overall.
