I don't think I've seen fish tacos with so much fish! I liked the homemade clam chowder, but after seeing the tacos, I know what I'll order next time. This place was very highly recommended by multiple people. I was not impressed with my food. My mom ordered the loaded clam chowder bowl and it was pretty good, the clam chowder itself was FANTASTIC! Loaded means fried clam strips and tiny bay shrimp on top. The bay shrimp was not good on top of clam chowder... I'll get back to the bay shrimp shortly. My husband ordered fish and chips, and that was AMAZING! Probably the best fried fish I've ever had! Also the tarter sauce they serve is so good that I want to put it on EVERYTHING! I myself ordered the shrimp melt, it sounded delicious but it was pretty horrible. I honestly thought I'd be getting real shrimp. I got some barely toasted bread with a tiny bit of cheddar cheese melted on it and a whole bunch of COLD little bay shrimp. In my personal opinion bay shrimp are only good on a salad and don't serve me my sandwich cold. If you want great clam chowder, go here but don't spend the extra money for it to be loaded. If you want amazing fish and chips go here, if you want shrimp, please go elsewhere! Black trumpet bistro serves real shrimp and it's worth every penny you spend there! read more

Worse food I have ever paid for. To start things off we waited for 45 minutes to get a table for two, which I completely understand isn't a reflection of the service or restaurant and is out of the hands of things, However it just added to my disappointment. I'm always very optimistic when it comes to dining out. This is a restaurant with the title seafood in the name so my expectations are that this is a local establishment in the coast, any person would think that the food should be somewhat good and fresh. The options for the menu are pretty basic, nothing fancy, so if a place is serving fairly basic food then please do it right. I wasn't looking for all the wrong things that could go wrong but it was Murphy's law for dinner.... We ordered cocktails to find out that the drinks have ingredients not listed on the drink menu, when someone orders a drink with fresh squeezed lemon and lime with vodka, you would think that's what you are getting. I was wrong. This drink came with sprite... which if listed would have been fine but I'm not sure Why someone would use sprite and not list it, soda water unlisted maybe, but actual soda ‍. The waiters had to ask 3 times what we ordered as a cocktail and if we wanted vodka or whiskey. Okay I get it, not the end of the world. We ordered a cup of clam chowder, and it came out Luke warm, which probably was the best tasting thing of what we ordered. We ordered fresh oysters, they came out and to my surprise were ginormous. My date and I shot them back and I watched as she struggled to not vomit right then and there as her oyster was either rotten or far beyond aged to be served. She has eaten a lot of oysters in her day and claimed there was something wrong with this one. I ordered the rockfish tacos and thank god I added the mango salsa because if I was blind folded I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between tofu and the fish. Zero seasoning on the fish, pretty sure not a grain of salt touched it. The jalapeño slaw was bland and only added a texture of crunch from the cabbage to the taco. It was the most boring taco I have ever eaten, all I could taste was mango, corn tortilla, and a hint of lime. My date ordered the tuna melt sandwich, in which I tasted myself to discover that my 10 year old daughter could have easily made a better tasting version using a 2 year old can of tuna with zero parental supervision. It was served with disappointing fries that I would compare to a bag of grocery store flash frozen fries that were a bit soggy. At the time we received our bill, we were also charged for an appetizer that we didn't order, which I pointed out to the server and they gladly removed it. The only thing I could think about was how Gordon Ramsay would be verbally assaulting the cooks for such a terrible meal. I'm sorry for the lengthy review and negativity, I just think that I could have made a better meal with canned tuna and frozen tilapia for a fraction of what we spent. read more

This restaurant has the absolute freshest seafood around. Our server, Emilie, was absolutely stellar! She was so busy, but found time to be pleasant and cheerful to every single guest. I saw servers in the front area being short with senior citizens, but then Emilie actually sat down with them, and made sure they got exactly what they wanted. I would not recommend or ever go to this restaurant again based upon service only. The food was good but our young server seemed to want to be any where else but there. We had to correct her with the order that we placed and send dishes back that were not put in correctly to the kitchen. Never had a check-in on how the food was, did we want another drink, did we want dessert (yes, as we were celebrating a Birthday). I only write this review as I called the restaurant after our visit to talk to a manager but never received a call back. Hands down best dinner in Brookings! My husband and two small children eat dinner here almost every night we visit! Every single time the food is consistently fresh, hot and delicious. Excellent ling cod fish and chips! The crab melt was also delicious. They are located on the pier, doesn't look fancy from the outside, but, don't judge a book by its cover. One of us wanted to indulge in fish and chips while the other is avoiding fried foods. After reading the reviews and perusing the menu we headed here for a late lunch. A few things should have sent me out the door before ordering. It was clear they were short staffed and the only staff member that was welcoming was the new trainee that wasn't set up to take orders. The other staff didn't acknowledge guests, smile or justify the long waits. After waiting for someone to become available to take the order we were told it would be 25 minutes. We wander around and head back after 25 minutes. Upon returning we wait again for 15 minutes for our order to be ready. My ceaser salad was sad. Portion was on the smaller side, bagged lettuce, very little dressing (not on the side as typical of take out) and the grilled chicken was inedible due to how dry and leathery it was. If I thought the employees cared I would have returned it, but I'm 100 percent sure they were to overwhelmed to do anything about it. The fish and chip were meh. The clam chowder is "unique" and not enjoyed. We know it's post covid and local restaurants have been hit hard, but this isn't a place I'd recommend. I can overlook a lot of things while trying something new but the staff, quality of food and price make this a place to skip. We tried a different local restaurant the following day with a wonderful experience so we know this little town knows good food and service. read more

I came to brookings with my family and we came to eat at the catalyst because it was down the street from our hotel and we were NOT disappointed. Our server Tiffany was so sweet and helpful and so willing to answer any questions we had not only about the food but also about fun local spots. Very comfortable welcoming environment with a wonderful staff, delicious fresh food and yummy cocktails! The crab tacos and the mango salsa is amazingggg!!!!!! I'm an understanding person and don't go out of my way to call someone out... but I do have standards for the food that I eat so if you like good quality flavorful food, don't go here. I understand that covid has hit the restaurant business pretty hard but the quality of food being served at this place is unacceptable. To add to it the service was not great either. The drink list wasn't labeled correctly so don't be surprised if you order a mixed drink and it comes with extra ingredients that aren't listed on the description of the drink you're getting (kind of odd). I've eaten alot of oysters in my day and the oyster shooters we ordered were not fresh and had a very off-putting texture that was not normal and I almost threw up at the table. I still was trying to be hopefully that the entree would save the experience but the entrees we ordered (fresh tuna melt and rockfish tacos) was very bland and just not worth spending money on. If French fries are a side for the entire menu you would think they would have that part down but they don't...they were served cold and limp. You would have more satisfaction from a meal just going to a fast food chain restaurant. The icing on the cake is that our ticket had an appetizer added to it that was not ordered so be sure to double check your tickets. I get that sometimes things happen and maybe one thing from a restaurant just didn't sit well with you but literally the whole experience was awful from start to finish. The only positive thing I have to say is that the staff was friendly but thays not enough to run a business.. This place seemed like a popular spot as it was packed and we had a 45 min wait to get in but don't let that fool you guys. read more

The first time we ate there I was so impressed, our waitress was amazing and the food was very good. This was last year. We had it to go several times since and there was always something missing, sauce, utensils, something, but we wrote it off to the stress of operating under the rules of the pandemic. Last night we tried again, my husband went in to order to go. It was a disaster. Long story short, the girls working don't seem to care about helping each other, they're openly catty and my husband had 3 different waitresses ask him if he'd been helped, just to walk away and not help at all. My husbands name is Larry, they kept saying they had the identical order but the name was Mary. Obviously there was a mistake in writing down the name, but no one wanted to deal with that. Finally, the girl cleaning the bathroom came out and scooped the chowder and put it into the to go bag that had been sitting there the entire time and handed it to my husband. Food was cold, there was no dressing, his shrimp and Chips were actually just a small container with shrimp. No fries. I Don't even know how that happened. I know it's difficult to find help through all of this but bad help isn't the answer. The only bright spot was my fish was excellent. read more
