I was in the mood for Hong Kong style cafe food so decided to bring my friend to visit here. On Sunday at 3:30pm it was quiet and the place was fairly empty. We were quickly seated and the waiter brought us a bottle of water with three cups in top and the menu. The menu looks interesting and was interested in quite a few items. E decided on egg & bread over rice, seafood pan fried noodles and xo beef stir-fried rice noodles. The food quickly prepared and brought to our table. Everything was fresh, tasty and very reasonable prices. I decided to order takeout but the waiters were just hanging out. Had to wave and call for a menu. It was dropped off and then staff walked away. Never checked in again and had to wave for someone to place the order. After four dishes and an appetizer the bill came out to $55 which is beer affordable for NYC. My only ask is that service be better. read more

My most unfavored part of this experience is the servers. They had preferred for us to pay with cash, which was fine with my group. What happened after was something I disliked. The server kept coming back saying that 18% tip was the minimum. 18% tip minimum? I had thought tipping was optional - my group's total was $36 and we did not have any change, so we decided to give $10. Next thing I know, I am listening to the server "show-boating" to his manager that he got a 30% tip. Not to mention, the manager was hyping up the server and saying "go get more money"... What kind of person will hype them up like that and out loud, plus my group was literally next to the check-out desk. Food was great, definitely love the fried rolls with condensed milk. We had a spacious table for 3 adults and 3 kids at the back of the restaurant. This place was clean and service was fast. The food came out really quick even though the place was packed so that's good. My husband and I both ordered curry beef brisket and curry chicken. However his chicken dish barely had any chicken in it, it was mostly potatoes and his portion was not as much as my curry beef. I didn't like the plate we were served on either, made it hard to eat off of. My daughter's crispy bun w/condensed milk is literally a toasted burger bun. This review is for Cha Kee's Hong Kong milk tea and pineapple bun with butter (bo lo yao). Both are excellent -- better than some tea and pineapple buns I recently had in Hong Kong even! The tea is brewed "stocking" tea -- not tea bags and one of my favorites in NY. The pineapple bun is warmed up and has a crunchier/crispier top than most buns, but it works with the butter. You can ask for extra butter for an additional $1 and they really give you a large pat. The tea and bun were not cheap, but very satisfying! Definitely recommend. read more

Hong Kong Style cafes is a great place for some cheap comfort food. This cafe was just okay, nothing really outstanding. Chicken chop noodle soup- this was ok, chicken was tasty but I i wished they would either fry the chicken skin a bit longer to make it crispy or just make it without the skin. This came in a mug sort of bowl. Fried Spaghetti with beef- some thing i can make at home Baked pork chop over spaghetti- I always order this at hk cafe and this was actually pretty bad that I didnt even want to eat it after a few bites. This is a very spacious dining space. Ambiance is very modern. Pur favorite is the rice rolls with special sauce. It is very hot which we love. Not sure how the dish stay so hot for a long time. It is delicious. Our least favorite is the pork chop and onions. It appears that they fried the pork chop then lay the onions on top. We thought it was going to stir fry together but it was not. Also very greasy. The rest of our meal were average. The stir fry beef chow fun was ok but very greasy. The toast with condense milk was very buttery but not enough condense milk. This restaurant hits as a Hong Kong style morning breakfast place. I always come here for the satay beef instant noodle dish, and it comes topped with a fried egg. If you're here early enough, you get a free drink with it too! The curry fish balls were also delicious, and the toast will bring you back to those days when that was the simplest thing to eat in the morning. Just okay, nothing special Ordered the baked rice lunches from this location after, not coming here for a couple years and I am underwhelmed. I was expecting more because this location is supposedly really popular and I know that at night they change into a different dining menu. The last time I was here when I had ordered baked rice and a noodle dish and the food was served cold. I decided to give this location another try because it has been a couple of years. But my impression of the food was not great. The pork chop had a really odd taste, and the rice for both dishes was throwing me off. It tasted like they used old stale rice that was reheated with some water? I also did not like the foil wrapper it came in instead of the tin baked containers that takeout usually gives for baked rice. It felt like they were trying to skim out on some rice/ingredients because the wrapper would take up more space in the plastic container that they used to hold the foil. Taste wise the Portuguese chicken was "just okay" I like that the potatoes were seasoned, but the sauce felt like it was lacking something because it wasn't very flavorful and for the pork chop the sauce was not great and the meat texture for the pork chop was not satisfying to bite into. I don't think I would come back here for the food again. I did order a passionfruit green tea drink, and that was pretty good but overall the meal was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. Probably worth skipping. The inside is pretty nice, but there's one lady server with a very nasty attitude. read more

I grew up here and haven't dined out here in the longest time. I wanted to go to Cha Chang Tang but saw it was closed so hopped into Cha Kee. Arrived in time for an early lunch so it wasn't too crowded and we got a nice booth seat. They had plenty of seating and felt like it was spacious. The decor is cute and gives off nice vibes. Service is a little better here than other places in Chinatown. Their bathroom is really pretty with the floral seating. Ordered a few dishes to try and they came out fairly quick with the exception of the baked fish with cream sauce (which is understandable). Curry fish balls - delicious! Sauce was so good we saved it till we got a rice dish so we could slather it on there. The fish balls were a good size and good texture. Soy sauce stir fry noodle - this wasn't bad. Was walking in chinatown and saw a small line at this spot. I went in and was told it was a Mission Chinese popup. At first I thought I needed an invitation but they gave us seats. I didnt get to take a picture of the menu because it is different every week. Online says this spot does it on Wednesday to Sunday until summer is over. Everything on the menu is spicy except for the Cha Kee noodles. I also had the lamb which was 39$. Favor wise was amazing, but very spicy. Beef chow fun was very tasty and silky. Beef chow mein was very good also. We got set A which comes with 2/4 choices- we opted for the rice rolls and the jook. It was a lot of food though I was wish the jook was thicker. I got an additional set pineapple bun with butter and also scrambled eggs on the side. Each breakfast special comes with a hot drink but can upgrade to a cold one for an additional dollar. As we were walking along Mott Street looking for a place to eat, we stumbled upon this HK style cafe. We decided to give this place a try. The restaurant was hardly busy and only like 3-4 tables were occupied.. We asked for a booth instead of a table but they said that booths were only for four people. That didn't start off well... I ordered the baked pork chop fried rice with tomato sauce and a side of crispy baby bok choy. The tomato sauce in the baked pork chop rice plate was very sour and the peas in the fried rice were shriveled up. The crispy baby bok choy was a complete disaster. I came with a friend who would come With other musicians after playing in a show to China town. He said this was their favorite, not the most famous but in his view the best. Sometimes with such a build up the, fantasy out paces reality. In this case, the glowing report was right on. The menu is extensive and varied . We shared several dishes . The tomato sauce has some sweetness to it and the cream sauce had some sweetness and a coconut taste as well, so if you don't like sweet sauces, you might not like these as much. The stir fry rice rolls had a delicious sauce with some slight spice. The salt pepper squid was fried and crispy but not a huge portion, so might be good for 2-4 people to share. The beef tomato egg was delicious and great with white rice and also had some sweetness. The tomato sauce was probably the same sauce used for the bake pork chop dish. Overall, this is probably my new favorite HK style cafe in Chinatown. I will definitely return here and price wise, it's also very affordable. For 8 people, it was $13.75 per person after tip and tax. It's cash only so make sure you come with some! read more

We ordered the mushroom soup, which tasted awful--like it was made from Asian mushroom powder mixer rather than fresh ingredients. My husband still drank some because he was cold, but I couldn't enjoy it. Most of the food didn't seem freshly made but rather packaged and reheated. My partner and I went to Cha Kee for lunch, seeking an authentic Hong Kong-styled 茶餐廳 or tea/diner experience. My husband was immediately transported back to his days of living in HK. The menu has real classics. He claimed that the restaurant's food was just as good, if not better than, much of the 茶餐廳 fare he had there. We ordered the French toast with condensed milk and peanut butter, a HK classic; spaghetti with black pepper and beef; baked chicken and pork chop with fried rice and tomato sauce; and an iced HK-styled milk tea. The French toast was served in the classic HK style--thick, fried, and with peanut butter in the middle. Dipped or drizzled in condensed milk with strawberries and blueberries on the side, this was delicious and my favorite of the three dishes. The baked rice was also scrumptious, though my main complaint is that the meat was very fatty. Similarly, the spaghetti was yummy, but the beef slices were all essentially fat. The chef certainly did not hold back with the black pepper in the sauce; the flavor was potent and almost overpowering. We had a memorable experience there with good and quick service. There is a scan code on the table. You can order from your phone or with the wait staff. The overall decor is modern and tidy. Dishes were pretty clean and organized. The food itself. The breakfast menu is a take on Hk western style items. You will see the usual ham eggs and the like. However, there is some addition of avocado toast/salmon Cali twist. It keeps up with the modern times but doesn't lose sight of its origins (ie macaroni soup etc). I applaud the wait and kitchen staff for their early rising hours to maintain this operation to its standards. as a result, I would give a huge tip. The breakfast is less than $10 for a sit down experience. Yet they deserve a bigger than 15% gratuity of the $10 tab- no way are they getting $1,50 as tip. I would do $5 and up to $10. Breakfast at midtown diner is $30. Soho is $40. Therefore, it is worth the shelling out of a few more $bucks because of the quality, early hours and overall experience. So this review was originally 4 stars but apparently I have left it sitting as a draft since last summer (June 2022) and interestingly enough, the food quality has dropped (while the prices rose) when I visited this month (July 2023). Granted, I did order different items this time but even if you just focus in on the toasts, you'd see a stark contrast between the two. 07/2023 food critique: The toast was dry despite it being fried French toast with filling. The filling was meager and we were not given condensed milk or syrup. I had to flag someone down for it. We got a Portuguese chicken baked rice and a brisket noodle soup (this is loosely translated -- I'm not sure if that's exactly how it's written on the menu). Both dishes were not salted properly but the Portuguese chicken dish had a nice top crust and decent curry flavor. I'm happy they gave me the cuts of beef brisket that I like (the tendinous parts) but the noodles and the soup were not hitting. 07/2023 service critique: Cha Kee is staffed by mostly young guys and they have always put forth good customer service. However this time, we were seated at the cramped small tables with narrow gaps in between. I swear if you're sitting on the inside, you wouldn't be able to walk through the gap (whether you wanted to go to the bathroom or when it's time to leave) without your butt making contact with the edge of the table of the customers next to you. Our server was friendly but I did get ignored a few times when I wanted to add something to my order or more water. I didn't say anything because I understood he was busy but being in a bustling, central location in Chinatown, it's always busy during lunch hour and they were adequately staffed with 5 servers. I'm pretty sure it's under new management over the past few years since it's been renamed "Cha Kee" (茶記) but honestly, I missed when this place was the original "Cha Chan Tang" (茶餐廳) since that's what I grew up with and it's just not the same anymore. The vibes, the interior, the people, and the food are all different now. What used to be Cha Chan Tang is apparently under new ownership. I came here twice- for breakfast & for lunch and their food just isn't the same. The menu here is more extensive and the food are very similar but the recipe and taste for all the dishes were different, it was nowhere close...the baked pork over fried rice with tomato sauce was gross! I swear every bite I took, it felt like I was eating dog food. The pork chop was rubbery and the rice tasted like it has been refrigerated, days old rice. The wings with coke sauce and Swiss sauce both tasted the same. Surprisingly, my husband really liked the fish fillet w/ sweet corn sauce. He likes any fish that is filleted. Previous named Cha Cha Tang. Not sure why they changed their name to Cha Kee. Also on Yelp, it says closed when I ordered at noon-ish, but I was able to order my food. They are handling the business very messily. I ordered on Uber Eats at this location, which is still named Cha Cha Tang on Uber eats. I'm not sure if they have the same ownership and just changed the name or what happened, but the food is not up to par! I ordered a cheese bake, my usual go-to at Cha Cha Tang. I ordered it with the fish and they skimped out so bad on the cheese. There was barely any cheese mixed with the noodles and it barely covered the top. It was such a thin layer with no cheese to mix into the noodles. Super disappointed. Will not be visiting/ordering here. read more
