I don't leave reviews very often. This place is a tried and true for me for the last 8 years... Maybe more. Their food is consistent in quality (frickin delicious) and always hot! I don't want to write a novel, but their naan is the best around. Their tandoori chicken? The juiciest you will find. I've eaten pretty much everything they offer and it never disappoints. I don't eat there very often physically (I usually order delivery) but it is even better to sit in the comfy and clean restaurant and eat it at it's peak of freshness . I've been coming here regularly for about 4 years, and I regret not discovering it earlier despite living close by. The restaurant itself is clean, if a bit basic. I usually call for takeout, but was recently delighted to see that they were on DoorDash, giving me a break from my own cooking during this pandemic. I always order the same thing, butter chicken a la carte with garlic naan, and haven't had a bad experience yet. I tried the chicken tiki masala once, and while it was good it couldn't compare to the butter chicken. The butter chicken is creamy, rich, and packed with flavor and a generous helping of tender, dark meat chicken. It's rich but not greasy and not overly salty. I highly suggest upgrading to garlic naan, it doesn't skimp on the garlic which pairs beautifully with the butter chicken sauce. First, let me just say that Raj is a great employee! He did his best for service recovery...too bad he doesn't have the full authority to make decisions on how to correct this HUGE mistake that can get us sick. We have been ordering food here for years, especially our kids. Today, we were given butter chicken that's not quite cooked. The chicken was pink/raw halfway through. We called and were asked to drive back, so we did. They exchanged the butter chicken with a new order. They even showed me a sample piece before leaving to make sure it was cooked enough. I got home, opened the first container and saw the raw chicken in about 90% of the meat (3 orders). I gave them the benefit of the doubt each time I sliced a piece but I kept seeing pink/raw. I called and the best they can do is refund $20 out of $70 spent on 4 sets of chicken orders (3 butter and one tikka). My husband already ate some before I saw this the first time...he doesn't inspect it the way I do, so he didn't notice until I showed him mine. This can easily get us salmonella I'm a bit freaked out because 15 years ago, my daughter had salmonella and it was scary. read more

If you could try just 2 things at this place, I would recommend the following two: 1. Samosa chaat - Tangy, Sweet, Salty and a tad spicy. Good portion size to share between two. Quite filling actually. Aloo Tikki Chaat goes along the same lines and is equally good. You can choose either one. 2. Chicken Tikka Roll - Remember the "roll" not the wrap. Chicken tikka chunks smothered in tikka sauce, onions and wrapped in a soft Bhatura. High on calories but heck the taste is awesome. Plus they give you 2 rolls. Again great for sharing. If you are vegetarian, you can opt for the Paneer Tikka Roll instead. Honestly rest of the food was averagish but I will keep coming back for a Samosa Chaat and Chicken Tikka roll! We absolutely love their big, bold flavors. When it comes to Indian food, my wife and I tend to get different things. She loves the robust, flavorful butter chicken... and she usually orders it mild. With a side of plain naan and rice. I, on the other hand, crave the heat, spices, and pepper flavor of their hotter dishes. I usually go for the Punjabi house curry or vindaloo. Something that lights a bit of a fire. And I'll pair that with something especially pungent - like garlic naan. Most nights, I'm content to order my dish "spicy" - which lights you up, but doesn't take your head off. Last month, however, I ended up catching a cold and was under the weather for multiple weeks. I had tried everything - vitamin C, rest, fluids, medicine. Nothing was helping. Congested and miserable, I decided that I needed to order something spicy to open up my sinuses. Chaat Cafe was my first choice. I loaded up my usual chicken curry... but this time, instead of "spicy," I selected "extra spicy." I'll tell you this: 'extra spicy' curry, while very hot, was still quite delicious. It's not like eating the 911 challenge, or a wing covered in "Da Bomb". It's not a carnival act. It's still a delicious dinner, despite the additional heat. Still, it takes a certain constitution to power through the crazy heat of extra spicy curry. My lips and tongue and nostrils were all ablaze. I ate as much as I could, finally succumbing to the heat about 3/4 of the way through the dish. After dinner, I had a wave of euphoria as the peppers subsided and my lips began to regain feeling. We watched a little TV and I went to bed... and the next morning, I sprang out of bed feeling 100% cured. Whatever was ailing me for the past couple weeks, the spicy curry must have burned it out. All this to say: not only is the Chaat Cafe our favorite local curry, but apparently, the extra spicy stuff is a cure-all. We ordered takeout delivery. The food arrived timely and we loved all the dishes! (We we're glad we ordered Mild as even those had a modicum of spice.). The whole tandoori chicken was really well marinated and juicy, and a steal at $14. The chaat (we got two types) was excellent with a perfect balance of sweet and savory. Chicken tikka masala was also rich and creamy. All the dishes tasted as if they were cooked with tender loving care. We will definitely order again from here! read more

I am a routine customer at this place but I found a stapler pin in my food. So I'm not comfortable ordering from here anymore. It hurt my tongue and that's when I realized it was in there. I do not know if it was in the curry or the rice because I had mixed my rice and curry - but one of the two had the pin. Dahi sev poori at this restaurant is hands down the best. I had referred a friend to this restaurant, they were disappointed with the quality of the chicken used in meals, my friend explained it as overcooked . I then visited the restaurant myself and ordered two dishes, one with chicken, one with lamb both tasty however the meat at both dishes were overcooked and not pleasant to eat. My dish came with a bowl of raita, I asked for more and was told to buy more raita. I was surprised as I had a nicer experience at other Indian restaurants. A little bit of connection between owner/staff and customer goes a long way, I have been their customer for the past 7 years, and I'm yet to see the connection and care for the regulars. Food is super bland compared to any regular Indian food restaurant. I tried few times but always disappointed with the curries and wraps.

The staff was very helpful. The food was delicious . I did not realize these chaat cafes food was as good as the Shalimar & other Indian restaurants. In fact, some restaurants we frequent only serve lamb certain days and these folks have it. It was a welcoming & friendly sit down place with condiments on the counter as well as plates,water ect. I love their Pani puri here. I can eat it day and night any time any occasion. If you're feeling adventurous definitely try it since it's not a typical dish many people know about (like samosas). I also like their samosa chaat which is better than any other place I've tried in San Jose. read more

We've been coming to chaat cafe for years. My favorites are the CTM wrap, samosa chaat, pani puri. Husband likes lamb vindaloo dinner. The pakora paneer is tasty but I can only get that when I'm really in the mood for something greasy bc it's fried cheese after all! My only regret is they don't have vada pav. The aloo tikki is basically a vada, but in my opinion they should convert that menu item into vada pav or at least provide pav on the side. read more

A chain restaurant that takes the time to make a superior plate. I myself tend to order the plate dinners, to maximize the size of the meal and the flavors within. Your plate dinner comes with a sizable entree with choice of Naan, rice, or both. Along with a cucumber salad and the veggies of the day, you will also get another small side veggie as well. The amount of food is staggering, as you can easily feed two people from one dinner. The thing that really makes this location stand out, is their gravy's. Always smooth, never lumpy or grainy in texture. The flavor are always consistent, and this just goes to show how strong the kitchen staff is. Super spicy food. They don't ask how spicy you would like your food to start with. So unless you're regular here, you wouldn't know how spicy the food is. And once you have tried the food, you would never want to go back! Indian food can be tasty and spicy, but this one is not tasty. All it is, is full of red spice. Service and Ambiance are just ok. We've been eating here since 2012 and I've never had a bad experience here. The best Indian food I've ever had, my favorite is the lamb biryani. The chicken curry and saag paneer are amazing, and I just recently discovered their kabob wrap. Every single bite is so flavorful. Consistently good food, large portions at a reasonable price is the reason why the Chaat Cafe is on my short list anytime I'm near Oakridge Mall. My youngest daughter turned me on to biryani here. Her favorite is the chicken; my preference is the lamb. My wife is a fan of chicken curry and our oldest daughter prefers the chicken tikka masala. The naan is always hot and fresh.
