Delicious, fresh vegetarian flavors. The thali is sooo goooood. Changes regularly and always well done. One of the few Indian restaurants that doesn't taste like they have three main sauces they pull from with no effort to make flavors differentiate or pop. The dishes here taste like the chef's actually care about the food. Service is polite and simple. Very low maintenance. Not a restaurant if you like to be picky. Come to enjoy it as it is. My only complaint (and it is minor) is that, because they do a lot of take out, they have a lot of drinks and other items prepared to just grab and go for you. This doesn't work if your order anything other than water to drink at the table. They offer really interesting and refreshing tea/lemonades, yet when they bring the drink it comes prepared to go in plastic cup, sealed, with boba style fat straw (as opposed to the very elegant picture on their menu). It stood out as massively tacky and ugly, especially because of how thoughtful the design choices are for the table scape and the rest of the dining experience. Strange place to cut a corner. Even opening the to go cup at the counter, pouring it into one of the lovely water glasses (which is what I did, lol) would be easy and streamline the beautiful experience. read more

It's been more than four years since I actively wrote a Yelp review. I stopped because I felt that dining experiences are personal, and everyone should have the opportunity to form their own opinion. Yesterday, however, I changed my mind after having one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had at Saapaaduu. I've tried to dine here a couple of times over the past few years, but it was always crowded, so we ended up leaving. Since we were in the area yesterday, we decided to give it another try. We arrived around 8:00 PM with our family, including kids, and waited about an hour for a table. Even though I added my phone number to the waitlist, I never received any updates, and it didn't seem like people were being called in the order they were added. By the time we were seated, it was already 9:00 PM. We ordered a few dishes. The appetizers--Chicken 65, Chicken Lollipop, and Pallipalayam Chicken--arrived one by one. About 30 minutes later, our server informed us that they were out of Seeraga Samba Chicken Biryani and only had Vijayawada Chicken Biryani available. Since it was already late and we had no real alternative, we agreed. It then took another 20 minutes for the biryani to arrive. Unfortunately, the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani was nothing like a biryani. It was simply dry basmati rice with chicken gravy sitting at the bottom of the bowl. The rice was dry, and the dish lacked the flavor and texture you'd expect from a biryani. I took one spoonful and left the rest--I didn't even want to take it home. The Pallipalayam Chicken tasted nothing but same chicken curry in Vijayawada biryani with coconut chunks and didn't have the authentic flavor I was expecting. Overall, nothing stood out. The food was mediocre at best and did not justify the long wait. The restaurant itself is quite small. The person at the front desk mentioned that it accommodates around 40 guests at a time, which seems about right for the 8-10 tables inside. Given the limited seating and the consistently long wait times, I strongly feel they should implement an online reservation or waitlist system. Families with young children shouldn't have to stand outside for an hour without updates. It almost feels like the long line has become part of the restaurant's image rather than something they're trying to improve. I genuinely wanted to like this place after hearing so much about it over the years, but unfortunately, the overall experience--from the wait, to the service, to the food--was disappointing. I apologize for leaving a negative review, as that's not something I usually do. However, I believe sharing an honest experience is fair to both the restaurant and future customers. It was our 1st time here and I went in with a lot of hope! Unfortunately this place was a mixed bag. Ambiance - clean and welcoming atmosphere, ample parking on a Saturday. Menu and orders/ payments available using a QR code . 5 Food : Masala tea - came out of a thermos and tasted bitter and not fresh. Same with the filter coffee. 2. Poori & potato masala : 4 light and fluffy. Not greasy . Vazhakai fry - 4 fresh and flavorful. The chutney that same with the dish was also good. Service- Not much interaction with a server, we placed our order and paid our bill online. The orders did not come out correctly. They servers us vegetarian Kothu porota , then came back and replaced it with an egg Kothu porota when our order was for chicken. We left it at that. The dish itself was nothing to write home about! Good taste and big portion. - sukha mutton - 5/5 - too good!! Loved the perfectly cooked meat and flavorful marination. - apollo chicken - 5/5 - spicy kick and a little saucy app. Yummy!! - seeraga samba chicken biryani - 1/5 - epic fail!! Deceiving huge portion for $19 but only 2 chicken bone in pieces :( the rice was good and so was the chicken but the chicken to rice ratio for the price was a deal breaker. Went there with lot of expectations, first time. In general, the food served there is spicy, despite being told it's "medium" spicy. Masala Dosa served was limp. Thali was serviced in a bowl with 2-3 spicy curries tossed over lot of rice. Only Butter Chicken Masala was balanced. Highly unlikely, will go there again. I liked the mix veggie pakoda the most. It was shredded thinly so really couldn't tell what veggie it is. It was nice and crunchy. My dosa was cold but still ok. Had saved this place for a while..after picking fam from San Jose airport, went straight here for lunch around noon. Nice clean place with friendly service and served our order quickly. Food ordered: 2 veg chatti choru( Tamil language) - veg thali which is unique from this regional Tamil cuisine. Over a bed of good portion of plain white rice in a bowl topped with beetroot fry, green mint chutney, pickle(radish in mustard oil), plain dal, another curry, deep fried vada and papadum. Accompanied by spicy yogurt based raita, yummy rasam and sambar. All served in fancy copper/ brass cutlery. Overall food taste was okay, heard chicken dish was okay too. Loved the piping hot raw banana fritter. I came hoping there was a fish / sea food dish..hope they add to their menu. Will have to make another visit to try their parotta and curry... Stumbled upon Saapaaduu since we were nearby and glad we found it! The chicken 65 appetizer was piping hot, crispy, and the contrast with the green dip was refreshing. Tikka masala was a good serving, creamy and delicious with the flaky parotta. It was our first time trying chatti choru and the server helped explain how to eat it with all the different seasonings and sides. We definitely got too much food for two, but ate everything up! Lots of families were eating here and it isn't a large restaurant, but the seating isn't too cramped. It's a great place to share with others. read more

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. There was a wait, but we were seated fairly quickly. We got the mutton chaati choru - a Thali served in a bowl. A base layer of rice with curries and veggies layered on top. Sambar, rasam and raita are served on the side. We also got a mutton kulambu and rice. All the dishes were flavorful and authentic! Valentine's Day, we came home late after another game and we decided to try out Saalaaduu, a fairly new restaurant in our neighborhood. I love spices and was not disappointed. My husband went in to order our meal to go. Asked for their recommendations and off we went. They pack up the food very nicely, provide their own insulated bag for the food and provided everything we would have needed. My favorite was the butter chicken masala and this rice dish with a hard boiled egg. I know nothing of how to order or what to order, but we were very happy with the recommendation made and will gladly go back to try something else next time. Ordered the kothu parotta with chicken. It consisted of fried crumbled parotta cooked with veggies and chicken, with salna and raita sauces on the side. 3.5 - We came here for a family dinner and had a good experience. The staff was accommodating and service was relatively quick. I enjoyed my chicken keema dosa and my brother thought the egg parotta roll was pretty good. We got a kothu parotta for the table which was one of the best dishes we tried. Flavor on the paneer bhurji dosa was mild and the paneer was a bit stiffer in texture, and the benne podi masala dosa was good but the podi had a mild flavor. If you're craving a proper South Indian meal that feels both homestyle and festive, Sapaadu really delivers. First, the space is beautiful. There's a huge, gorgeous mural of Ganesha that immediately catches your eye and gives the place a warm, lively vibe. And the food is served in stunning brass dinnerware, which makes the whole experience feel special. It's the kind of detail that instantly transports you to a traditional South Indian feast. I ordered the Chatti Choru with mutton curry and mutton meatballs, and it was delicious. The mutton curry was the standout for me. Deep, rich flavor with tender pieces of meat and just the right level of spice. The mutton meatballs were fantastic too, juicy and full of flavor. What I really enjoyed was that the meal comes as a full spread. Alongside the rice there was poriyal, thovial, sambar, rasam, applam and yogurt, which made the meal feel like a complete traditional plate. The poriyal was excellent, fresh and perfectly cooked. And finishing with gajar halwa was the perfect sweet ending. My only suggestion would be about the rice portion. It's quite large. I ended up throwing away about three quarters of my rice, which felt wasteful. It would be great if they offered an option for less rice and a little more vegetables or sides. It is located in a commercial / industrial neighborhood, and so the area seemed secluded on a weekday evening. We tried the chati choru (veg and goat) meals along with the chicken 65 appetizer. The chati choru is basically a bowl with a bed of rice and different curries served atop it. They served raw banana poriyal (dry stir fry), sambar, onion curry, rasam, tomato Chutney and fresh pickle with the rice in the vegetarian version. The goat chati choru had a goat curry and stir fry instead of the veg stir fry. It did not come with a dessert side, which is something I would've expected in a thali-like offering. The service was good and the restaurant had limited seating inside. Since it was a rainy day, I didn't notice any tables or diners eating out around the porch. Saapaaduu is located in a quiet strip mall among office parks in San Jose, but the crowd gathered at this restaurant is after one thing: their authentic, homestyle South Indian food, inspired by the cuisines of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. We started with the Chef's Special Pallipalayam Chicken, made of boneless dark meat chicken in an oily mixture of spices, sliced coconut, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. The star dish of the restaurant was the Chatti Choru, their version of a thali but served in a single bowl of white rice with a daily selection of toppings listed on a menu board. My bowl included beetroot thogyal (a chutney made of beets), mathanga erissery (pumpkin coconut curry), urulai kilangu varuval (potato fry), vendakkai moorkuzhambu (ash gourd in yogurt), thangaipal rasam (coconut milk and tamarind soup), and sambar (lentil vegetable stew). My protein selection was the goat, which came with chunks of mutton in gravy and kola urundai (a meatball made of minced mutton). All of the components of the bowl were delicious and came together in a balanced meal! My favorite dish of all, however, was the Kizhi Parotta with Chicken Curry, made of parotta flatbreads wrapped with boneless chicken and salna (curry sauce) in banana leaves, all wrapped in foil and grilled. I never thought I would like a soggy version of parottas, but the flatbread absorbed the delicious curry sauce and had a pleasantly soft yet chewy texture, and the spicy flatbread and curry mix was complemented nicely with a side of thick yogurt sauce. Having heard a helluva lot of hype about this place from my friends, I finally got to try this place over the holiday weekend. Quite a loooong drive from Mountain View. We felt spoiled for choices when we saw the menu and had to take some recommendations on what to order. Even after the recommendations, we were still confused . A larger group would've helped to try more dishes. 1. Seeraga Samba (Rice) Chicken Biryani - 5/5 really really good. One of the best I've had in recent times. Fresh, super high on flavor, really well cooked chicken, gracious on the portion of both the chicken and the rice. We had a big appetite on the day but still had a good amount of biryani rice to take back home. Definitely not very oily, felt fairly healthy. Raita and Salna were just ok. 2. Chatti Choru (Chicken) - 3/5 This is supposed to be their most popular dish. We contemplated going for the goat but went with the chicken. I like the idea of the rice bowl/plate this way with the variety of chicken 65, chettinadu chicken curry, rice, poriyal, kootu and additional thali accompaniments (payasam, appalam and more). But we felt this was just okay. This actually lacked a bit of flavor on most of the dishes that came as part of the bowl, and was also a little cold. Portion of the rice was fairly big but not the other accompaniments for the price, but I suppose it's understandable with the variety. I was really tempted to get the tawa sukka biryani and the kal choru (supposed to be a fusion between a fried rice and a biryani) as well, but they're for next time! Not super large in terms of space, so probably might have wait times when busy. It wasn't that busy on Christmas afternoon a bit after opening, we got seated immediately. Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of service and food. Not a typical Indian restaurant. Pidi kozhukattai literally melts in your mouth. Apollo chicken and Rumali roti are match made in heaven. Chuttni that comes with dosa is something you can just have it by itself! For a crowded restaurant, service is very nice. Front desk staff is very polite and professional. Sometimes you dine at a restaurant and feel like you've experienced something special, and you hope deep inside that the restaurant is successful and is here to stay. We had that kind of experience when we had lunch at Saapaaduu today. As the name suggests, it was like a nice-sweet South Indian mom called out to us to 'come, let's eat!'.... LOL. The ambience was homely and unpretentious. The dishes were all exclusively served in traditional copper-based dishware and cutlery that added to the appeal. We had the Ghee Mini Idlis served with sambhar, tomato, peanut, and green coconut chutneys - mainly for my 7-year-old. We also had the Chicken Lollipop, the Mutton Chatti Choru, and the Chicken Keema Kizhi Parotta. The idlis were soft and went really well with the chutneys. The chicken lollipops were served hot and were flavorful - the chicken was so juicy! But the star items were the Chatti Choru and the Kizhi Parotta - we're fortunate to have a lot of great South Indian food options in the Bay Area, but these items were so unique. We haven't had anything like this in other popular restaurants in the Bay Area. The mutton was so succulent, and the fried Tindora (Kovaikkai) in the Chatti Chori and the Pachhdis (chutneys) were ridiculously good. The Kizhi Parotta was lovely! Overall, it felt like we were eating a meal prepared by a Tamil cook who partnered with a Kerala cook, and they both were trying to one-up each other. LOL. Anyway, I digress. Saapaadu is a great place for chattichoru, chicken65, Apollo chicken etc. But today I had come 30miles with an appetite for their Seeranga chicken biriyani and it was a let down, so much so that I didn't even finish it. I really hope this was a one off and they really improve it. It didn't have the flavor or spice or enough meat. i have very high hope from Saapaadu and when it falls short, it hurts. The restaurant is located in a business district, but don't let that fool you. This establishment has very nice decor, excellent service and very good food. This is a South Indian restaurant with their specialty being rice bowls with a little bit of everything. Sambar, yogurt and a small soup come as little side dishes. Our meal and recommendations + Chatti choru with chicken has all of the flavors of the standard rice bowl fixings but they add a topping of curry chicken and chicken 65 which is essentially yummy Indian fried chicken (5/5) + Chatti choru vegetarian is hard to describe other than lots of goodies in a bowl. My only gripe is that I ate most of the toppings with plenty of rice to spare (4/5) Towards the end of the meal we were given fresh off the fryer fritters that I think is called Vada. They look like fried chickpeas but they could also be made of lentils. They are super crispy and a great ending to a wonderful South Indian lunch. read more

I tried the ghee podi idli, mutton sukka, kothu parotha, ghee dosa, and mutton kola urundai, and honestly, I couldn't pick a favorite. Each dish was amazing in its own way. This is elaborate 25 item banana leaf unlimited lunch that is hosted only on saturdays and Sundays. having tried to get a reservation for a while we finally managed to get one for this weekend. Everyone gets seated in their outside lunch tent together ( about 60-80 people per seating). The lunch is served on giant banana leaves in a traditional wedding style setup. The food was delicious, light, flavorful. Absolutely fantastic and worth coming here again and bringing friends. After an hour long trek from East Bay we ventured into Saapaaduu around 1 PM on a weekend, hoping for Tamilian taste bud bliss. What we found was... well, chaos, served with a side of deliciousness (eventually). The Lobby Scene: Imagine a game of Human Tetris, but less organized. The lobby, technically adjacent to the dining area, was crammed shoulder-to-shoulder with waiting patrons. This led to the delightful (read: deeply uncomfortable) experience of having a dozen hungry eyes bore into your soul as you tried to enjoy your meal. It's like dinner theatre, but the audience is hangry and you're the unwilling star. There was apparently a beautiful painting somewhere in that lobby, but it was completely eclipsed by the wall of waiting humanity. Staff Safari: Observing the staff was an adventure in itself. Coordinated? Not so much. It was more like watching startled pigeons trying to decide who lands first. The manager seemed permanently affixed to the counter, surveying the lobby pandemonium with the calm detachment of a lifeguard watching a puddle. Getting water involved a silent, confusing game of staff members gently poking each other into action. And the pièce de résistance? Our friendly neighborhood dishwasher gracefully gliding past a Mount Everest of dirty plates on our table, seemingly oblivious. It wasn't clear who was steering this ship, but it felt like everyone might have misplaced their oars... or perhaps just really disliked their jobs that day. Untrained? Overwhelmed? You decide. Food: The Delicious Dichotomy: Now, let's talk about the food - because, honestly, it was good. Genuinely delicious, authentic Tamilian flavors that almost made you forget the surrounding circus. Almost. But brace yourself for the price tag, which is definitely on the SF Bay Area "ouch" scale. The real head-scratcher, though, was the "Charru Meal" (their thali). The portions were... let's call them 'minimalist chic'. The tiny bowls for rasam and sambar contained what looked suspiciously like a homeopathic dose - maybe an ounce if we were lucky? The other delightful accompaniments were dolloped atop the mountain of rice with the precision of a surgeon applying exactly one-quarter teaspoon. Delicious, yes. Satisfyingly proportioned? Not quite, unless you're dining with Thumbelina. The Verdict: The entire experience felt less like a seasoned restaurant and more like they'd just unlocked the doors for the first time ever and were still figuring out where they put the spoons. The food has serious potential, but the service and atmosphere desperately need to iron out about a thousand kinks. 5/5 Stars- Saapaadu Nailed Onam Sadhya I had the best Onam celebration at Saapaadu. They set up a cozy tent in the parking lot, and the vibe was totally Kerala-style. The food was insane. Served on fresh banana leaves just like back home. Matta rice, dal, sambhar, rasam, masal vadai... everything was on point. The jackfruit veg dish was a standout. I loved that they use fresh ingredients and healthy oils. No artificial stuff here. Hospitality was top-notch too. Staff were super friendly and made sure everyone felt welcome. My family and I decided to try this new South Indian restaurant. We finally have a new one in South Bay closer to the evergreen/silver creek area! Parking is plenty but the seating feels a bit limited. They do open up outdoor seating when the indoor fills up. We ordered the following 1. Kothu Parotta (5/5): I really loved this and found it full of flavor and a good quantity 2. Seeragasamba chicken Biriyani (4/5): the spice is all in the chicken, so if you avoid eating the pieces you don't get a lot of the flavor. 3. Uttappam (5/5): the sambhar and chutneys were all an amazing accompaniment to the dosa and we really enjoyed. 4. Roattukadai Kalan (3/5) : this was a new dish I've never tried anywhere else. There is a lot of added flavors and masala but I didn't quite get any taste of mushrooms. The mushrooms also seem minced in this dish. Services was quick and the interiors are very beautiful and really bring a South Indian vibe. I recommend this place! read more

Hubby and I had an amazing, scrumptious, soul satisfying, authentic Tamil food at Saapaadu for lunch yesterday. Hubby has been raving about this place and waning to visit since many months. I ordered the chicken Chatti choru: a traditional dish consisting of rice, pacchadi, assorted curries, sambar, rasam, chicken 65, chicken curry, desserts and appalam. All served in a bowl. It was super delicious. Each and every items felt satisfying and delicious. Felt like simple home cooked meal. Enjoyed every bite of it. Hubby ordered the chef special seeraga samba chicken biryani. Extremely delicious, so yummy and tasted out of the world. Loved the flavours and comforting taste of the dish. We also had spiced mooru. Super delicious and refreshing we gulped it up in a go. Both dishes in all aspects 5/5 Ambiance is amazing clean and tidy. 5/5 Service is super quick and food is piping hot and fresh out of the pan. 5/5 Ample parking. Came in on a Friday at 5:30pm and the place was pretty empty. We were the only ones in the whole restaurant. Parking was also plentiful as the parking lot was empty. We were sat down to pay where we did a scan QR code to order and pay before eating. It was a bit odd to tip before eating / service. I liked the decor they went for a black and gold theme We ordered: Appetizer: chicken 65 (3/5) Entree: vijaywada biryani (3/5) Dessert: Rasmalai Crinkle Cake (3/5) The chicken 65 came out piping hot. It was alright. I wish it came out with a slice of lime tho. The biryani was ok. We order medium spice. The spice level was fine but the flavor was a bit lacking for me. I didn't really like the rasmalai crinkle cake it felt too soggy. I think I would've just preferred the rasmalai on its own. read more

Amazing spot for South Indian food. The dosas were really good, and the mini idlis were super soft and flavorful. The chicken appetizer was also filling and tasted great. I'd definitely recommend sticking with the South Indian items here. The biryani was good in terms of flavor, but it could've used more meat. Same with the mutton dishes; the curry tasted good, but it was a bit light on the actual mutton. Service was excellent, very attentive throughout. The ambience was also impressive for the price point as it is very reasonable. The plates, cutlery, glasses, and overall setup give it a more upscale feel. read more

Amazing food yet again! This time we went as a group of 8 adults and 4 kids. Thankfully we were seated promptly (despite them not taking any reservations beforehand). Everything tasted so good. The non-vegetarians said the chicken 65 was amazing (apparently fried in coconut oil?). The bowl of rice with kootu/poriyal/thogayal, was so good too. Everything tasted fresh and exactly like how it should taste. Veg biryani was decent (vegetables could have been cooked just a little more, I had to bite quite a bit on the potato/cauliflower/beans). Potato masala for the poori was also on point, and the masala vada was just perfect too. Ginger lemonade was super refreshing. Rose milk with some kind of seeds inside (basil/chia seeds) was also good and not overly sweet. Everyone left with a full and satisfied tummy. Wonderful! read more
