I've been meaning to try this place for a long time. I finally got here. The food was wonderful. I wish they had some type of fruit empanada here, instead of just savory, though. I ordered the three cheese empanada. On the menu, you're warned that you shouldn't get it if you don't like blue cheese. After I ordered it, I was also warned. I was expecting it to be stronger blue cheese than it was because of the warnings. It was delicious, though, and so was the ham and cheese. I've been doing walks in the neighborhood as part of my rehab from a recent medical procedure. On the daily walk I'll slow down and look at posted restaurants menus of the small businesses along the Taraval St corridor. I'm a huge fan of empanadas, and ate them daily on a South America trip a year ago. Today I dropped in to order 1/2 dozen empanadas- choice of baked or fried. Who can resist fried food? Ordered all fried - * two spicy beef * two beef * two chicken It was a brief wait as they're fried when order is placed. Each empanada had an alpha letter stamped on it. And my takeout box has a legend sticker. Look at the legend; then you'll know which one is which. So clever. Got home with my freshly fried empanadas. Still warm. The ambiance is lovely, with mellow music and a relaxed neighborhood cafe vibe. Annie, the co-owner, came by to chat and shared that cinnamon was added to the churros menu only based on customer requests -- in Argentina, churros aren't served with cinnamon. I got two empanadas and they're just a snack size. Overall experience was mid. Carne Picante Empanada is the spicy beef and I was recommended to try it baked. It didn't taste particularly spicy to me and it also didn't have much filling. Carne Dulce is sweet beef and got in fried format. This tasted pretty good. I thought the sweet beef was more flavorful and had more juices (you can also tell this was more filled than the other). There were no accompaniment salsa or dips. The vibe did not feel particularly welcoming for me on a weekday afternoon, with staff not checking on me at all or offer any water. But if you come hang out note it's a laptop free zone. There was no one else in the cafe and I wanted to check in some work while I waited for food but the manager quickly came over holding a no laptop table sign. The owner is always there, super personable, and actually takes the time to connect with people, which you don't see much anymore. Super cute and friendly neighborhood coffee & empanada spot! Popped in here for a quick morning coffee and snack. We ordered by ourselves on the kiosk at the front (they also offer standard ordering at the cash register) after deciding what we wanted outside by looking at the menu at the window. Both the empanada crusts were delicious. Churros were amazinggg. Perfectly fried with the crispiest and most delicate bite!! And lightly sweetened with sugar as well--no cinnamon at all and I loved it (I realized after that cinnamon sugar is actually an add-on). The lovely staff member working (owner, perhaps?) brought us a dulce de leche dipping sauce to try with the churros (she noticed it was our first time!) and it made a wonderful creamy addition to the crisp. The burrito is one of the better ones I've had! The tater tots inside are perfectly fried and crisp, the eggs are not overcooked, and I loved the slight char on the tortilla. We ordered everything to go and enjoyed it by the water since this place isn't too far up from Ocean Beach. We went with the sausage breakfast burrito, it was loaded up with crunchy tots and lots of sausage. And, it was HUGE! So happy we decided to share one. The sausage was a very herbaceous, which my boyfriend loved, but I thought seemed out of place with the other flavors of the burrito. I think if it had more salsa inside and not just the pico, I would've liked it a little more. Nonetheless, it was still a great burrito, I'd just go with the bacon next time. For empanadas we went with a Carne dulce (sweet beef), jamón & queso, and champinones (mushroom). We were given the option of fried or baked and went with baked. My boyfriend really enjoyed all of the empanadas, and I loved the jamón a queso and champinones, with the champinones being my winner. Yum! These are the best empanadas my husband and I have had so far! We tried the corn, chicken, spicy beef, mushroom, and ham & cheese. They were all very tasty. We tried the fried and baked version of the spicy beef and prefer the fried version. First time at chalos. Not a great start. On google/Apple Maps it shows they open at 7:00am.. I got there at 8:30 thinking it's open but apparently they don't open until 9:00am. The door was open so I walked in & when they told me that they didn't open yet I showed the worker what it says online so they can fix it & she just shrugged & then shut the door. The place was pretty empty for lunchtime, and they keep the door open for venting so wear a sweater.
