You've got thick-cut turkey, crispy bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, all stacked between toasted bread. Good balance across the board. Nothing is overpowering, everything plays its role. The avocado adds some creaminess, bacon brings the salt and crunch, and the turkey is sliced thick enough to actually feel like something. Bread is nicely toasted. Holds everything together without getting in the way, which is key for a sandwich like this. It's not trying to reinvent anything, just a well-executed classic. This spot has a real neighborhood vibe, in a good way. Plenty of patio seating and dog friendly. Steps away from one of the city's best oceanside walks. Not bad, right? Would run this back for a quick lunch if I'm in the area, but really hard to compete w the other incredible sandwich options in SF, so wouldn't go out of my way to come back. After our trip to the zoo was sadly and unexpectedly cut short, my friends and I tried to make the best of our unfortunate situation by stopping by Java Beach At The Zoo for a quick lunch. As fans of Java Beach Cafe, all of us had been aware of this sister location yet, somehow, none of us had actually stopped in before. So, even though we hadn't actually planned on it, we were all more than happy to finally stop in! Inside, the decor and vibe of this place looks so much like their original spot on Judah - wood-laden interior with some counter seats and dated posters and decorations that give it a warm and cozy vibe. Plus, it's awesome how they have a fair amount of seating inside and about a half dozen patio tables outside, which is perfect for those sunny and breezy days out here by the beach. Similarly, the menu here is nearly identical, with the same collection of espressos, coffees, teas, pastries, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, and beers, but with the addition of soft serve, shakes, and floats, which I don't recall seeing at their spot on Judah/La Playa. -- TSUNAMI HOT SUB with Ham, Salami, Mortadella, Choice of Cheese (Swiss), Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Mayo, Mustard, and Special Sauce on Choice of Roll (French Roll)...$18.75 Not quite as good as how I remember it, but still pretty solid. The mix of meats was still just as delicious and they didn't skimp on the portion nor their "special sauce" (Italian dressing?). That said, I didn't like this French roll as much, as it was a lot thicker and harder. -- ARNOLD PALMER...$7.25 (16oz) I liked this so much at their original location, I couldn't resist getting it here and, thankfully, it was just as good. Not only was there an even ratio of iced tea to lemonade, but the taste of this was so well balanced - not overly sweet nor tart or bitter. As far as service goes, just like at their sister location, all of the workers here are so nice and friendly. They warmly greeted everyone that came in and got our orders out relatively fast. What's more, the vibes here feel a bit more chill and relaxed by comparison. Maybe it's because you don't have the N-Judah line right outside, but it seemed a bit more peaceful with a nice mix of customers - from folks quietly working and reading to families stopping in for a bite on their way to/from the zoo. Overall, as much as I enjoyed my visit to this Java Beach, I feel like I'd be remiss not to acknowledge that the prices here do trend higher than what you might expect to find elsewhere. Nothing egregious or anything, but I can't say I expected my lunch was going to cost $26 (before tip) either. Given that, despite how much I genuinely like Java Beach, I'd probably be more inclined to come back when I'm looking to post up to do some work rather than strictly just to get a bite. Whether you're going to the zoo, heading to Sunset Dunes, or just live in the neighborhood, Java Beach is a good stop for a snack. Java Beach has several tables both inside and outside. I often see people bringing their babies or dogs and eating outside when it is sunny. They keep a bowl of water out for the furry friends. I usually get their sandwiches, with the club being my go to. You can get a standard club sandwich but you also have the option of having it on a Dutch Crunch. I almost never turn down a dutch crunch option, and it does well with club ingredients (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo). The house coffee is solid but not always consistent day to day. One thing that could be improved is speed. It's a relatively low staff cafe for the amount of foot traffic they get, so you might have to wait a while for your order. Also, they don't always get the order exactly right (e.g., wrong cheese in my wife's sandwich, wrong bread on an order in the past). It's also not cheap, but hey, it's a cafe near the beach. Overall, pretty solid food and coffee, and worth stopping by if you're in the area. read more

It's located near the zoo with plenty of free street parking around. Also walkable from the zoo if need breakfast or a place to take a break. Ordering inside was a snap, the staff was quick with orders. They have a great selection of coffee, pastries, and hot sandwiches. I opted for the breakfast burrito which came out super hot and fresh. Whether you're going to the beach or zoo this spot is in the perfect place for a quick little pick me up. There's food, drinks, and everytime I pass by there's a good amount of people are sitting and enjoying their items or people waiting for their drinks to go. The ambiance gives cute little beach town cafe. I'm not gonna lie I had low expectations for my drinks but I was blown out of the water with the quality. For a drink, I chose the butterscotch latte with oat milk. The highlight of our breakfast was the berry Irish soda bread. It was surprisingly moist, and that didn't stop me from slathering butter and cherry jam on it. My butterscotch latte was good--the butterscotch flavor was prevalent at the beginning sips but faded as I drank it. The bear claw was fine and unmemorable. Outside of the Irish soda bread, I appreciated how Java Beach appeared to be a true neighborhood spot with several locals enjoying their breakfasts. Had such a great experience at this coffee shop! The lox bagel was fresh and delicious, and the latte was made to perfection. I also loved the atmosphere , plenty of space to sit, read, or relax without feeling crowded. Parking was easy, which is a huge plus in SF, and the location next to the San Francisco Zoo and the beach makes it even better. I was really impressed with their breakfast and lunch selection too. I am so sad to say this, but Java Beach is no more... They changed all their food vendor to Sysco and now everything tastes like garbage, along cutting half the menu. I have LOVED their Tsunami sandwich for over a decade and now it tastes nothing like the old sandwich. The bread is thin and airy, the contents all feel cheap. What's on the menu board is what you get, no add's or deletes to the item. Prices went up another $1.00 for a sandwich. I get a price increase but with the increase the quantity dropped. Sandwich's had 2 slices of meat, 1 slice of cheese, huge roll and lot's of lettuce and 2 slices of tomatoes. The place had a lot of potential, with good seating booths for kids, proximity to zoo, and open on a holiday Monday. Unfortunately, the menu was limited to mostly bagels, sandwiches and burritos - but only like 1-2 options per category. That is usually fine, except none of the menu items satisfied our picky eaters. I still forged on in ordering. The food came out relatively fast - 10 min or so for two hot sandwiches. By hot though, only the bread was toasted, and the meat/cheese, unfortunately was not. The sandwiches fell apart when eating. There was nothing memorable about the sauces (just plain mayo and mustard). Saw that the meat came from chain grocery stores, so basically, nothing special to set them apart as a specialty sandwich store. They also touched a bunch of stuff while preparing sandwiches and ingredients with the same gloves, including the phone and delivery boxes. The cookies and chips were pretty good though, but sadly, won't be revisiting. read more

Got in line 15 minutes before 5 and waiting to order. Got to the register exactly at 5 only to have them tell me no ice cream, it's 5. There was still a line out the door and to the intersection. Very disappointing that the staff let everyone line up and wait only to just close it up at 5 on the dot while telling everyone nothing. But after her Rudeness, I should've taken the tip back. She's lucky I didn't. My BFF's sandwich was Not worth the $18.25 it cost, considering the Rudeness of the employee, and the fact that he said it was tasteless & dry. the restaurant was Filthy inside. I have been coming to Java beach for 10+ years, location is prime, food and service decent. Sadly over the last few years food quality has taken a significant hit and prices are constantly going up. My last visit was extremely disappointing, $24 for a turkey sub and coffee. At 11am they were out of turkey, changed my order but they got it wrong twice, in the end I received 2 slices of bread, 2 slices of ham with cheese, tomato and a bunch of lettuce smothered in mayo. Beyond disappointed, $18 for this sad sandwich, coffee was bitter. How can they in good faith ask for this amount of money for mediocre food. Needless to say, will not be returning. My favorite lowkey spot for a quick coffee and breakfast. Plenty of street parking around this area and it's located right by the SF Zoo. They are popular so there's always a bit of a wait on a weekend morning but it moves pretty fast. It's truly a neighborhood spot and it feels that way inside too. I went at O dark hundred so it was very chill and quiet I grabbed a latte on my way to the beach for the sunrise. I had one of the signature lattes maybe butterscotch I can't recall but it was very tasty. It was warm with a toasty flavor with a hint of sweetness. The barista that helped me was so pleasant and helpful as I was navigating the menu. I wanted a scone but they were ready yet so I went to the beach and returned on my way back to grab a warm scone and the fruit compote they served with it and butter. So . I was visiting my cousin who lives in San Francisco, CA, back in March 2022. She and I were at Java Beach At The Zoo. What a lovely and quaint coffee shop! They have a great menu of items. My cousin was very kind to get me a delicious and smooth Butterscotch Latte (thank you cousin for the wonderful drink!). Then she got us some Irish Soda Bread with Butter & Homemade Jam... what a delightful and tasty bread... the jam was deliciously superb! There was a chocolate chip cookie, too... a favorite of mine! Afterwards, we had ice cream cones... it's a good thing I like ice cream LOL. We were sitting outside the coffee shop taking down the latte, bread+butter+jam, cookie and ice cream. Got a chance to chit chat, enjoy the sweet treats, and feel the nice beach breeze. Afterwards, we took a short stroll out to the Ocean Beach area. Got some nice pics with our hair all over the place. We didn't even need a blow dryer... it was a natural breezy blow LOL! Definitely go and check out Java Beach At The Zoo when you're in the Bay area. I would go there every day if I lived close by.
