Came in the morning with a table of 8 and it was empty inside, but our party was greeted by a very kind and welcoming server. We were coming from out of town with low expectations for a random spot we were told was good. The interior is spacious and has nice seating, with an additional room that felt a bit private where the server was able to rearrange tables for our large party, which made things really comfortable. The menu had a good amount of options. I ordered the Beef Pad See Ew and Papaya Salad. I was able to make it not spicy, and they put the Thai chilies on the side as well, which I really appreciated because my spice tolerance is very low. Both these items were delicious, and I would recommend them the most out of everything we ordered. Also, all our dishes came out in less than 5 minutes, which was impressive. My friends got the Pad Thai, Yellow Curry, Green Curry, and Crab Rangoons. The crab rangoons were good, and apparently the noodles they used for the Pad Thai looked like Vietnamese pho noodles. It was extremely saucy compared to what we're used to as well. The Yellow Curry was coconut-y, but the Green Curry was not. After our experience here, I think the meal exceeded all our expectations. Driven past Chandara Thai a handful of times, and the lights strung outside have always caught my eye. I knew when we had the opportunity to go out in the area, that I wanted to check this place out! I'll preface my review with this: I'm used to Bay Area Thai food. I usually order medium, and then add more chile or spice as needed because some places make their mediums pretty warm. The food we ordered medium here had little to no spice, I definitely would call it mild and will probably order hot next time. With that said, the food was all fresh and delicious. They served us in what seemed like minutes after ordering, and our dishes had great presentation. We ordered wine to go with our meal, which was surprisingly affordable. It's not posted in the standard menu, but they do have a separate wine list you may need to ask for if you'd like wine. Overall, the interior had nice ambiance, the staff were friendly and we had a good experience here. I'd say if you're a Thai food lover in Grass Valley, it's worth giving them a try. read more

I ordered takeout and chose some old favorites: chicken pad Thai, Tom Kha Gai soup, Duck Curry, pork larb, fresh spring rolls and deep-fried egg rolls. The deep-fried egg rolls (4) were "good," considering the 1hour+drive home until I could eat them. They should really be eaten immediately. The sweet dipping sauce was tasty, but I wouldn't mind a tiny bit of heat. The rest of the food was a delightful surprise - it was as good as any Thai food I've ever eaten - in fact, better than most, including 20 years of living in the Bay raea and having access to the best. The spring rolls (3) were quite large and well-prepared, with nice shrimp wrapped in the translucent skins. They came with the same sweet sauce and some yummy peanut sauce. The larb was perfectly balanced, brightly flavored, and just spicy enough to be interesting. There were several seared whole chilis in it, which were pretty hot and tasty, for the more adventurous. The pad Thai was very flavorful, just the right amount of sauce on the noodles, which had a nice texture. The scrumptious duck curry was my favorite. It was velvety-smooth, nicely seasoned and spicy enough to be exciting but not off-putting. It had plenty of duck meat, generous chunks of tomato and pineapple. They didn't scrimp on the coconut milk, it was rich and creamy. The Tom Kha Gai soup was really tasty, with lots of bright Kafir lime flavor, mushrooms and chicken. It had a little less coconut milk than some recipes I've had, but the flavor was top-notch. My wife and I were both absolutely delighted by the flavors, quality and quantity. The portions were surprisingly generous, we got more than three meals for two people out of this order. I cannot wait for the next chance to sample more of their menu! read more

I've always had great experiences here. Whether takeout or dine in, their staff is so sweet and friendly, and the food is wonderful. Super flavorful, mild spice is mild and medium is toasty, but that's on me I have some room to grow on spice. Our servers have always been attentive and kind, and it's just an overall positive vibe. Have eaten at the restaurant many times, I love their food. A few nights ago I was too tired to cook so I ordered take out. My son ordered Drunken Noodles and I ordered Pad Thai which I had never ordered before. Waited a while before my order was ready then drove home. Both dishes were Pad Thai! My son would love to eat that but he has a sensitivity to eggs. I called them, they apologized promptly and said to come back to get the right order. We had the appetizer spring roll - insides were tasty, but rice paper was very tough (maybe they make the rolls ahead - could benefit from another dip in water just before serving so they would be more tender). I have been wanting to eat here but honestly the reviews are so awful I was skeptical. However tonight we were in the area and my daughter wanted thai coconut soup. The soup was great. They didn't follow exact instructions on spice level or veggie omissions, but it was great and easy to look passed. Also ordered the tofu with thick rice noodles spicy. Oops. It was really Spicy. The décor resembles that of other higher quality restaurants, featuring newly installed flooring and dining tables. This place is so delicious! We were just visiting grass valley for the day and found this place and we are so thankful we stopped in. My 10 year old daughter is just raving about the vegetable soup! It is her favorite soup she's ever had, she said! We also got the drunken noodles, egg rolls and fresh spring rolls. Everything came out quick and cooked just supremely! We absolutely had an amazing dinner! The vibes in the restaurant were super relaxing with birds chirping and calming serene music. I've eaten at dozens of Thai restaurants in the past 20 years and have never had any really bad food -- until trying Chandara. We ordered 2 dishes for take out. They were ready quickly and still hot when arriving at our house. We sat down to eat them right away. The Bangkok City Chicken was a tough fried mess that appeared to be made mostly of batter and chicken skin rather than chicken meat. Literally couldn't chew it, it was so tough. Tasted the sauce that came with it out of curiosity - it was very unpleasant tasting (and we normally love Thai and other Asian sauces). We also ordered the Silver Noodles with Cabbage. This dish is usually called Pad Woon Sen and is one of my favorites. This version was unbelievably salty and very oily. Both dishes we ordered were literally inedible. After trying a couple bites of each, we threw the food in the trash. read more

This restaurant is every reason people love Thai food. It is one of the best Thai restaurants I have ever been to. Every dish is supremely flavored and bursting with the Thai flavors that keep people hooked. Just to cite one example, the Papaya salad perfectly mixes the citrus sweetness (I think they use real calamansi) and sourness with an intense thai chili spice and the crunchy goodness of the papaya. Wasn't sure what to make of some of the reviews but we were in the area and decided to try it. (Lots of the one star reviews contradict one another -- some people say its too spicy, some too bland, etc, which is often a sign of reviews which should be ignored.) VERDICT: Boy was it good. Enough authentic spice and flavor to really hit the spot. We'll be back! Take out was hot and ready when they said it would be. Prices were pretty normal. Portion size varied from average to large. Veggies were clearly fresh. SPECIFICS: Highlights were the Panang Curry generous portion and chock full of excellent veggies and tofu. Did I mention is was a GIANT soup container of curry? Yeah, I love that with my to go orders since it means I'll have enough left over for lunch the next day, too. The fried rice was great and they had substantial chunks of veggies like broccoli which were done just to the right amount. And they were careful to confirm whether eggs were okay which shows good foresight. Pad kee mow was excellent. It can be greasy some places but they have that under control. Enough to be real without feeling like you are eating oil. The only non five star dish was the Thai basil. Four stars for that one. Still worth getting but not quite as amazing as the rest. But to their credit it had a distinct blend that did not overlap with the other dishes. A great choice for the community! Now to be fair, I didn't spend more than a minute in the place since this was a to go order so I can't really comment on the staff, though I was impressed they called us after we placed our order online to confirm specific details (like whether egg is okay), so that's cool. I ordered the Thai eggplant green curry under the specific request that it not be too spicy, I wanted mild and she assured me the dish was mild to mild / medium. When dish arrived I found it so spicy I could not palate it. I asked her to remake and she said only yellow curry is mild. After agreeing to change to yellow curry, the waitress brought me a new dish of nothing but chicken pieces floating in yellow curry, with no vegetables or eggplant. When I requested no meat I was informed that was not an option for me. Instead I got extra spicy and couldn't eat it at all. When I called for a refund, they refused and said I would have to call DoorDash which I did and they said I would have to call the restaurant-I got the typical runaround. Excellent food. I have never been disappointed. Sometimes the spice level can be a little off. I like spicy food and on some occasions it is not quite spicy enough and friends found the opposite where mild was to spicy for them (their meals did have quite a bit of heat). The flavor however is always great. Service is a bit hit and miss and can vary from excellent to slow and doesn't seem to be affected by the number of diners. The service problems at times would be the only reason for not giving 5 stars. I think the restaurant ambience is very good. Clean and well set out. Got their fish in ginger and it was absolutely rotten, I was so disappointed, I had 2 bites and now I feel sick to my stomach. I told the waitress that the fish was spoiled and she was no way sympathatic or surprised. Absolute WORST service I've received from a restaurant ever. Tonight was my first time ordering from here, and will be my last. I was shopping at raleys and thought I'd give it a try since its so close. I tried to call multiple times to order and their phones weren't working or they weren't picking up, so I went in to order. Upon entering I stood at the counter with no help or greeting. When the lady finally came out she was rude and did not seem to want my service. I went ahead and ordered. 20 minutes later my husband ran in to get our order, and she was also very rude to him. We took our food home and when getting it out, they forgot to give us our rice. So I called them again, and someone answered this time, no hello, nothing. Asked "what do you want sir" (I am clearly a woman) and handed the phone off to someone else, making rude comments in the background while I was waiting on hold. You'd think a restaurant, especially during a pandemic when restaurants are struggling, would want to give good customer service and appreciate the people that want to support their business. I own a restaurant myself, and customer service is the absolute number one thing you must be able to provide. The food was good, but I will never be back due to their rude staff. I already love Thai food but it's so nice to have a local restaurant that's convenient with a full menu and great service. I had a little problem with a takeout order today and I called them and they immediately fixed it. I was very impressed by that. Try the shrimp salad. This place usually has great food. No tonight. I ordered a garlic lovers dish with pork, over steamed vegetables. Of the three vegetables, the broccali and the carrots were completely raw and hard, and barely warm! The cabbage was a bit cooked but the pieces were really large and no knife. The pork was horrendous! It was at a minimum, HALF FAT. Every single piece was wretched. And, THREE times I bit into GRIT, like sand. Perhaps the cillantro wasn't washed enough? The brown sauce it all came in was a nondescript brown sauce that I would associate wtih a bad Chinese restaurant and not a supposedely great Thai restaurant!
