Chang Jiang used to be Bowery Fleet Bakery. I came here to get an egg tart. It's a self-serve bakery with the trays, plastic bags, and tongs. I grabbed one egg tart ($2 cash) and paid for it at the counter. The egg tart was great! The crust was flaky and the filling was smooth and eggy. One of the neighborhood bakeries that isn't a large chain in Chinatown. They weren't goodbefore their renovations- I often found things were tasteless or stale. Now since the renovation- they must have changed bakers because everything is tastier and fresh. My favorite thing to get from this bakery is the raisin bread. Sounds kinda simple right? But their raisin bread is slightly eggy like a halla and packed with raisins. This is also one of the only bakeries that still sells ham and egg buns and makes them throughout the day. Their ham sui gok (fried pork rice dumpling) is not hallow and the meat is spiced right and crunchy without being overly greasy. I would still say they need to improve their tea. Everything is really cheap and it's a good spot to potentially get a seat to eat your snack. read more

6/2026 Upgraded shumai! Better taste, small whole shrimp and better texture. I am still mourning the loss of my beloved bean curd skin rolls, but the shumai is making up ground. The buns are uniformly good across the board, and they refresh them on a regular basis. Nothing that's a super-standout, but everything here has been reliably good. read more

The Bowery Fleet Bakery is your run of the mill no frills type of bakery that you will find all across Chinatown especially in the areas of Chinatown that are outside of the main streets. Anyway, I was in the area in search of a pastry to satisfy my sweet tooth and also for something that wouldn't be too heavy on the wallet. I got myself a bun with egg custard to go. It was pretty good and a fairly standard Chinatown pastry and I was processed pretty quickly. The place itself has an assortment of what you would typically find in a bakery in Chinatown with a variety of different buns like a dry pork bun, sesameseed balls, fruit cake birthday cakes, etc. read more

Ohhhh to be back in NYC and have multiple Chinese bakeries within a five minute walk. these guys had a great selection. Loved their egg tarts. I personally don't get the cookie crust type of egg tarts and these were the two layer traditional which is really the only way to make them. read more

I walked by Bowery Fleet Bakery in desperation looking for a steamed bun for my son for breakfast. I was delighted to find a combination of both traditional Hong Kong-styled bakery items and a decent dim sum selection. I got a steamed vegetable bun ($1.50), piping hot, which my son loved. The filling was flavorful and fresh, and the dough was pillowy soft. I also ordered a kaya bun ($1.50), which was very good. I appreciated that the woman at the counter handed me a freshly baked one from the back as opposed to one on display. It was still warm and soft. The custard filling was smooth and sweet. The crust isn't as crumbly as Double Crispy, and it's smaller, but still a very satisfying and scrumptious product. I was there on a weekday morning; elderly locals were languorously enjoying their breakfast while watching CCTV news. While spare in decor, the bakery is clean and has a good amount of seating. This bakery has many selections of snack foods. There are also dishes of wide noodles and HK style thin noodles. Their baos (baked and steamed buns) are good too like the di bao (large steamed bun) and roasted pork buns. My favorite is the ting ging bao (fried meat buns). See photo. A little non descript Chinese bakery on The Bowery located in Chinatown is where you will find this old school bakery catering more to the locals than to outsiders. I don't think you will find this on Instagram. I had the chopped pork ( hom nguey ngook biang ) seasoned with salt fish over rice. This is like home made, the way my Toisanese mother used to make. Service may be dubious at best(like Seinfeld's soup Nazi, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT) Food is consistently well made! That's the most important -lots of their competitors items are not always up to snuff - (undercooked and doughy, raw centers, etc). Though I have noticed certain items getting....shrinkflation recently(fried fish and chicken cutlet sandwiches)...The rest still good - Note around 6.30/7pm all remaining goodies are HALF off. So so happy to see this place! 长江！ Another location was on Grand St between Allen and Eldridge (next to HSBC) but a fire displaced them. I was truly so sad to see it gone, as I was a very loyal patron during my high school years :') I'd never been to this location before so it is unclear to me if this is where they relocated or if it simply a second location that always existed. I waited to review because I needed to know for sure this is the same place with great buns, full drink menu, and BEST OF ALL the dim sum and hot food in the back! They have it all! On top of all of this, a very kind and prompt young lady served me. Great service is a rarity in Chinatown so big props to her :) cannot wait to come here more often!!! read more

Not sure why this has good ratings but it is slightly cheaper than the popular Tai Pan which was completely packed whereas this bakery was practically empty. The radish cake was very cold and hard. Also didn't have much radish or meat. Mostly just flour. The pork thing that's fried was also just okay. The drink cost more than the food. It was on the way so I came to check it out but I guess the selection is pretty terrible in the afternoon or maybe it's just not as good as the more popular places in Chinatown. I come here at 7am when I am visiting Chinatown. They have three kinds of pan fried noodles, pan fried pork buns, dim sum house style pan fried dumplings, rice rolls, steamed sui mai, and plenty of other dim sum. I had their steamed Big Buns. Everything is delicious. Everything here is cheap and convenient if you live in the area. Would I come middle of the day. Not really because the highlight is the breakfast items. After it sells out, they do not replace it unless it's still mad early. For most of the time when it runs out, it runs out. My favorite breakfast items are the Hong Kong style soy sauce fried egg noodles and the pan fried buns that are light and airy. AND yes, we eat this for breakfast. read more

Fleet is not only a bakery, but also a lovely take-out for dim sum and other snacks. Their steam table has many Cantonese/Hong Kong style comfort items such as congee, chow fun, dumplings, and rice noodles. Their steam rice noodles are absolutely delicious! It's fresh and silky, and you can get them with pork, shrimp, dried shrimp and plain. Most impressive, however, is the extremely courteous service. This bakery is the best on The Bowery in Chinatown. Most (that I've tried) of the bread and pastry are so spot on in terms of texture and filling, without being too heavy. I always make a trip here whenever I'm in Chinatown. Their prices are reasonable and IMHO way better than Manna House. There are also hot food like congee, dim sum, noodles, and curry fish balls! I found this gem of a bakery couple of months ago. This bakery is located on Bowery right around the corner of Bayard. One day I asked my church buddy where to get a particular piece of dim sum and he recommended me to come to this place. This place sells turnip cake which not a lot of bakeries here have that. And I didn't have to go to a dim sum place to get it which is pretty convenient for me. Besides that they have Shu mai and shrimp dumplings which is pretty good too. They have a variety of stuff in the food section. They also have like friend dumplings and fried buns if you like those. I haven't had their buns because I usually get my buns at simply bakery. Maybe next time I'll try their buns as well. There are a couple of seats in there but sometimes they fill up so better swoop one quick if you plan on sitting here. read more

I love their coffee and mainly come here weekends just for it. The food can be hit or miss. Anything with pork here has a tendency to be very fatty pork. The spare ribs with rice rolls are good. They use a bit too much sugar in the dough so steamed buns & fried buns are on the sweeter side. What is surprisingly good here which you never find in a Chinese bakery are the muffins. The double chocolate muffin when paired with a cup of coffee with no sugar is a great afternoon snack. Also very good are the sesame balls. After losing my beloved Chinese bakery on 35th St, I vowed never to let an under-appreciated business go without a review. For anyone who might not know, Chinese bakeries often sell more than just pastries, but also hot dishes and sweet breads with savory fillings that are more like sandwiches. I've tried some other places, but this one exceeds them in taste and variety. I've gotten roast pork buns, fried chicken sandwiches (excellent, but has mayo for those that don't like it), hot dog buns, and a few of the hot dishes. It's all good. This is an amazing bakery because it is so much more than a bakery. But you would not know that if you just walked in and looked. You really have to ask. They offer so much more behind the counter which is not visible if you are just strolling in. They have dim sum a whole variety... and usually hot . The reason I believe that you can see the items is because they are kept hot in the ovens or steamers . They have spare rib steamed over rice for around 4.50 comes with an egg and vegetables. Excellent red bean pineapple buns with really red beans not just the paste. I have never ordered anything from the display because I prefer my food and baked goods hot and warm and toasty. Order their coconut cocktail bun, they keep them hot and warm, delicious . Just hope the line doesn't become too long. They also have excellent coffee at 1.10. Congee . and fried rice at 2.50. The bubble tea and drinks are immaculate and the large variety certainly isn't anything to complain about either. Plus the prices are amazing with the buns only a few dollars or less.
