5/26/2026 Stopped in for one of those pineapple and pork buns that I heard about in Chinatown and it did not disappoint. The shop was small but had a lot to offer for sure plenty of fresh baked goods, amazing cheap pricing and a homely feel to the place. The bun was way better than I expected lil sweet and savory and filled well. Stop by if your waiting in line next door for sure

A no frills, counter service spot next to the famed Wah Fung, Tao Hong is serving up traditional Cantonese baked goods. There is not much to the interior except a display of their enticing baked selection and a few nice aunties waiting to take your order. I only wanted to stop by for their egg tart. Unfortunately, I wanted to also try a Portuguese tart, but they were all out. The egg tart was creamy, fluffy, eggy, and not too sweet. Perfect balance of creamy gooey filling to the flakey buttery crust. They also opted to use the more Portuguese forward puff pastry which I prefer. Gave it that nice light crisp I was looking for. Overall, one of my favorite tarts in NYC.

This is a conveniently located bakery on Chrystie. Good stuff. I liked the pineapple bun with BBQ pork inside and the don tat (custard pie). We sampled this place while wandering Manhattan during our recent trip. It was very good. It was not quite the five star stuff, but it was very good and I would drop in again if I was in the area and was jonesing for dim sum like pastry items. Perhaps I am not a five with this because I am comparing it with the dim sum in the SF Bay and LA area restaurants. This was good and I would go for it again, like I said, if walking by, the lines were unusually short (never happens) and stuff. But, I would not journey to come here if I was visiting the son and stuff. I'd go to Katz's deli because there is no deli like that in CA. That said, this place is good and well on par for the area. Bring cash and you'll need to wait about 20-30 minutes for your order depending on the crowds, which is a good indicator of where this place sits in the local pecking order - it places high.

I'm obsessed with the texture of their little mochis. It was pillowy soft, light, and was more a custard than a typical mochi texture. I tried the mango and taro. The mango one had some small pieces of mango inside and the taro had a taro paste. I'd love to come back to try the other flavors!

Back for more egg tarts! Arriving at 5:30pm on a Friday, I walked by the continuous line of about 20 people outside Wah Fung No.1 and stepped into an empty bakery aside from the proprietor and me. My first question was: "are the egg tarts sold out?" To which she responded: "no, though there's only 4 left." Of course I had to be greedy and buy the last 4 then (= After that I couldn't say no to a fluffy mochi, they were all sitting there staring at me, waiting to be eaten. Mmm so soft and jiggly, and almost custard-like as before (see my previous review). Again got the matcha red bean and will say the matcha flavor was not so noticeable this time though the mochi itself was still wonderful. As I looked around at the other assortment of pastries, the roasted sesame cookies $5 caught my eye. They looked thin and crisp. With a little push from the sales lady, I picked that up too, and was delighted to find they are terrific! Thin, crispy, lightly sweet, almost a little savory from the nuttiness of the sesame. Try this! Another productive visit to this bakery; what a gem in Chinatown!

My go-to spot for char siu bao -- delicious and such a steal! They also have a bolo bao version if you like a touch of sweetness and crunch, though I personally prefer the plain one. Their Portuguese egg tarts and mochi are also worth trying. Tips: 1. Bring cash! 2. Come about 30 minutes after opening for fresh char siu baos and egg tarts. Right at opening (8 AM), they're usually still baking and not ready yet. 3. If what you want is out of stock on the shelf, ask the cashier ladies if there is anymore in the back. Sometimes they also do mid-day bakes.

A solid and standard egg tart. Loved the flakiness of the crust and the jiggly and dense egg filling. Not particularly memorable though and not enough to have me go out of my way here to grab some more. The other buns/pastries that they offer looked standard as well. The store itself is dingy but service was very friendly.

Because Tao Hong is right next door to Wah Fung No. 1, I decided to give them a try since I could have someone wait in line at WF1 while I visit THB. At the time that I visited around 2pm, there were still some items on the shelf so I chose a BBQ pork bao with a pineapple crust top and an egg tart. Both were very good and worth a return visit. Perhaps an earlier visit would offer more items in stock. Bring cash. This tiny shop offers no seating, but there is a park across the street.

I came here with the intention of trying the barbecue pork buns however, when I walked in, I noticed that they were not served hot and they were prepackaged. I decided not to get one however I did see a mini black sesame moon cake. I absolutely love black sesame in anything and everything and so I purchased one. It was $2.75 and it was very good with a cup of tea. Casual. Cash only. Friendly service. Please come and create your own adventure.

Pretty big mango mochi for very cheap pricing! I was expecting fresh mango inside tho and there wasn't :((( still the coconut flakes and mango ish custard and flavor on the inside were great!!! Would come back and try the egg tart No line super fast service and no seating

This bakery has the nicest staff and their pastries are always on point. I like their cha siew bao (roast pork bun) bcus it's not too fatty. I like it way better than Mei Lai Wah's cha siew bao which is too fatty and honestly sometimes too sweet. I like the cha siew bao to have a bit of sweet but also savory. Their egg tarts are also delicious. The crust is flaky and the custard is the perfect texture and not too sweet. I recognize one lady from this other bakery I frequented and she seemed so happy I recognized her. She seems happier at this bakery too! It's a small bakery, but they have a good amount of items. And they have more things behind the counter that you can't see! So if there's something specific you want that's not on the shelves, you can ask them and they may have it!

The touching moment when I finally found an egg tart in Chinatown NYC that's on par with the BEST egg tart in Hong Kong!   Tao Hong is a hole-in-the-wall bakery right next to the famous Wah Fung No.1. As I walked past the bakery, the cashier lady excitedly told me they had just baked a fresh batch of hot egg tarts. $1.75 each, CASH ONLY. *Egg Tart 蛋撻 $1.75 The puff pastry tart shell was buttery, light, crumbly, and incredibly flaky, with perfectly laminated layers that weren't greasy at all. It was paired with a silky smooth, slightly jiggly egg custard. The filling had just the right amount of sweetness, though I did wish for a richer egg flavor. Even though I usually prefer a cookie crust, this one still won me over.   Btw they also sell mini mooncakes in black sesame and green tea flavors, which really interest me. I will definitely go back to try those and let you guys know my thoughts.

Quick and easy egg tart!!! So warm, soft, sweet, flaky! The owner was quick and kind! This is a small bakery with no seating inside and very efficient service! Get your bakery and walk around!

There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.
