Chang's Garden was a pleasant surprise. We weren't sure what to expect since Chang's doesn't have many reviews and a relatively average score of 3.5 stars. However, the food is delish, the prices reasonable, service decent, and crowds large after 7pm. I highly recommend the spare ribs with spinach, the chicken cream corn soup, and chicken with garlic sauce. The oolong tea at Chang's is pretty darn good and they have a banquet room for parties. I was also impressed that Chang's had pretty good wine - Gnarly Head. This is usually a $10 bottle of wine in the stores and they have a nice Chard although most folks prefer their Zin. Seating is plentiful at Chang's and they have a nice mix of 2, 4, and 8 seat tables to choose from. Go for the booths to get the pleasant window views. Parking at the plaza is sort of tough so go early if possible. read more

This place is totally somewhere you go with family: it's loud and crowded and full of middle-aged Asians. They try to cram as many people in as possible so the aisles are always half blocked and when you push your chair back, you hit someone else's behind you. Other than that, the dong-po meat, fish maw soup, sauteed shrimp, seaweed crusted fried fish, fried stringy rolls and fried soft tofu (sooo good with a garlic dipping sauce) are recommended dishes. Their peking duck is also good but I hear that they order it from somewhere else so quantities are limited. If you like it, call ahead for reservations and have them hold one for you. Everything is definitely a bit on the oily side though. But also this place has funny memories - it used to be a fish restaurant called Opakapaka a long time ago and I was a hostess for two months. It says 'Lunch special served daily from 11:30am - 3:00pm except weekend an holidays'. We came in at 2:00 on Dec 29 (Thursday) and was told they decide Dec 25 to Jan 1st are all 'holidays'. I know every store's prices are subject to change, but please don't use ridiculously reasons to change. Just put a banner outside your window says 'We apologize for not serving lunch from Dec 25 - Jan 1", that's just fine with me. Dec 29, in which country is a holiday?! Based on a NY times food review, Chang's Garden is one of the best Chinese restaurants to go to in the LA area. Well, I concur, and I hope that you try it too. Now do I know how to guide you in terms of ordering in English, no. However, is it good? Yes. There are several dishes that I would recommend, but rather than give you an English translation, I will tell you that there are lines of people waiting to be seated here, which is a sure sign that you should come to this place to eat. The food is wonderful: fatty pork, vegetables, chicken, vegetables, hot and soup soup, etc. I am a fan and I hope that you will give it a chance. Just don't stay too long because they will ask you to leave because of the line no matter what time. Also if you order to go, make sure they give you the right change because once I gave a larger bill than they had expected and they didn't give me accurate change. Shanghainese food is a favorite in my family so we eat it quite often. We've been eating at Chang's Garden for as long as I can remember. Some dishes we always get include: Seaweed Fish, Shanghai Style Pork Ribs, Shanghai Rice Cakes, Beef Roll, Green Onion Pancake and etc. As with many Chinese cuisine, it's always family style so you get to try a little bit of everything. The food can be a tad oily to some people but I have admit many Chinese cuisines are greasy so maybe I'm use to it. If you come here, just stick to getting Shanghainese dishes! Ok, so I know I shouldn't expect too much from Chinese restaurants service wise, but if it's that bad, it is very deserving of a bad review. Their food is mediocre, I have had better Shanghai food elsewhere. Chang's Garden is greasy, I had to drink a whole pot of tea just to make sure my body survives. What is so bad about their service is, they don't treat customers the way a customer should be treated. I walk in on an **UNPACKED** (meaning not-so-busy) day and only waited 7 minutes before they asked me how many people are in my party, yes I counted. I mean, if they were busy and all, I would forgive them but yeah, they weren't so there goes 1 star. Since I am much too nice, I like to give places a chance to redeem themselves and well, they kind of did not do that and there goes another 2 stars. Why? Serving me food that is supposed to be hot, cold. I've hung out with enough Chinese people to know what should be hot and what should be cold, so screaming at me that a hot dish is normally served cold is NOT ok. You might as well just give me a piece of raw pork and tell me that's how it's typically served. I mean, its not like I'm asking for a brand new dish, just heat it up. But yeah, I left the one star for it's cheap lunch specials M-F, regular dining prices are slightly more expensive for the exact same thing. Been here a couple times with the boyfriend's family. To be honest, I rarely eat Chinese food so this review is coming from someone with very little experience in earing Chinese food. The times I've been there the staff was attentive. Not really friendly, but that's probably because I don't speak Chinese. Thankfully we've always had my boyfriend's mom there to order for us and communicate our needs to the waitresses. The food has always been good. I went here because one of my jobs was comping lunch. My Korean superior insisted this was authentic Chinese and despite my trumping him with a full eighth of Chinese heritage, I went along with it because - free lunch. I enjoyed the meal well enough, but the flavors just aren't for me. The highlights of the meal were the beef rolls and the fried fish thingies (look them on the menu - that's what they're not called!). For the amount of food you get, it's definitely a steal - great for a family style meal. This is one of the few formal Chinese restaurants I regularly visit and would recommend for people visiting. It serves both Shanghainese and Sichuan cuisines. The food is decent but not spectacular. It's suitable for family gatherings and celebration parties, but not for high end business dinner. If you can't eat too oily, you might want to remind them not to add too much oil in cooking because sometimes, the food tends to be on the oily side. My favorite dishes are: * Wine Marinated Chicken; * Pork Balls in Brown Sauce, aka braised lions head (Meatballs were very tender and mixed well with the glass noodles, napa cabbage, and bamboo.) * Boiling and spicy oil beef (Raw meat is thrown in and cooked right before serving.) * Steamed pork buns or xiao long bao. * Pork Ribs Steamed and Wrapped in Lotus Leaves Be warned that it's hard to find a parking in the lot during meal times. Service is ok. Although most patrons are Chinese, I found my Caucasian BF and other non-Asian friends love the food here as well. read more

Chang's Garden - Lotus leaves wrapped pork rib (mildly spicy) - Chinese Near Me - Arcadia, California

First, a little bit of background: a few years back I spent a summer in Hangzhou, and couldn't get enough of the light, creative flavors of their local cuisine. Returning to the States, I discovered that the distinct taste of Hangzhou cuisine was nowhere to be found. I've been to Chang's Garden a few times and have always left satisfied, mostly on account of their serious skills in making Shanghainese dishes, which they are known for. Last night, in the company of family friends, we ordered almost entirely off of their list of Hangzhou-nese dishes. The highlights: - Sweetened Lotus Roots filled with rice: This dish tastes exactly as I remember it, with the lotus roots soft, chewy, and infused with syrupy sweetness. It's a bizarre appetizer even for someone who's grown up eating Chinese food, but I guarantee it is absolutely delicious. Remember you heard it here first! - Shrimp cooked in Dragonwell tea leaves: My favorite crustaceans go for a bath in Hangzhou's famous "imperial tea" before being lightly sauteed in white sauce. Unlike other Chinese shrimp dishes which are overpowered by the taste of pineapple, mayonnaise, and the like, this one actually tastes like shrimp, sweetened just a bit by the green tea. - Dong puo meat: I didn't order this Hangzhou favorite last night, but have had it here before on other occasions. I'm a bit undecided about this one, as the sauces that the softened pork is braised in is ecstatically tasty, but the preponderance of pig fat is a bit over the top for me. The one lowlight: - Duck meat in buns w/ cilantro and green onion garnish: I've never had this in Hangzhou but am told it's from the region. I'd pass on this dish next time because the meat is a too tough (though tender duck meat is pretty hard to come by), and the overall taste is too much like Peking duck to resist comparison. And my verdict is that it's not as good. Overall, Chang's Garden can hold its ground even in San Gabriel Valley's intensely competitive environment. The authentic goodness of their dishes and the palatable service and availability (call ahead to reserve on weekends) make Chang's Garden a solid choice for Chinese mealtime cheer. read more

Definitely one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in SGV. It's tucked away in a shopping plaza just off the main road (Baldwin) that has plenty of parking. The variety here is awesome - so many delicious dishes that there is always something new to try each time we come. Also, the quality is consistent - we've been coming here for over 7 years, and the food today tastes the same (in terms of quality) as it did 7 years ago. Some of our favorites include: Clam with winter melon soup, green bean in Chinese pancake, green onion pancake, cold pork Shanghai style, and Shanghai style rice cakes. I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Update 8/10/17: We came back (again) three weeks ago for a family gathering, and pre-ordered the Beggar's Chicken. My god, it was one of the best chicken dishes I've eaten in a really long time. Definitely worth ordering (in advance) if you make reservations. read more

When we're too tired to cook, when we want to spoil ourselves a little bit (we rarely go out to eat), our go-to place for Chinese is Chang's. Yes, we have to drive 20 stinkin' minutes to get there, but the food is worth hazarding the roads of Arcadia, full of Asian drivers talking on cell phones and driving with their knees (hey, I'm Asian, I can say that :-) The hot braised shrimp is spicy but also has some depth, and we love the subtlety of the mini bok-choy and black mushroom dish. I also like the seaweed fried fish (not greasy at all, and it reheats well the next day if you have any leftover). The appetizers of boiled peanuts is a nice touch, and we were given a green-bean soup as a free dessert once. I appreciated the sentiment, but the soup was only so-so. For some reason I always have to have Coke when I eat Chinese food. Luckily, at Chang's you get Coke/Diet Coke in a can -- I prefer that because the "Coke" you get from a soda fountain is always way too sweet. This place gets super-busy, as does the parking lot, so practice your defensive driving skills! :-) read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant, but mediocre food and lack of service gives this place 2 stars. With so many restaurants in the area serving very similar fare, I think that this restaurant should try harder in earning people's business. I came here during Saturday lunch, lunch specials are only available on the weekdays. The restaurant was full and there was a small wait. I took this extra time to peruse through the menu and decide what to try. My party and I were finally sat in the corner booth, which seemed like a nice private table compared to the rest of the tables crammed into the center of the restaurant. I didn't know it was so private that it was impossible to get the attention of servers. It took them about 10 - 15 minutes before they realized that we didn't have menus. This whole charade of waving and shouting to get service repeated itself about 5 times throughout the whole lunch. Really unfortunate because watching the other tables, the servers were really attentive. Not being able to make the trek from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley often, we wanted leftovers. After getting the attention of one of the servers, it was hard, we ordered: Tung Po Pork, Lotus Wrapped Ribs, Fried Seaweed Fish, Xiao Long Bao, Snow Veg and Pork Rice Cakes, Pancake Wrapped Green Beans and the Chive and Pork Dumplings. Dishes worthy of note: Tung Po Pork -- Though it is very hard to mess up pork belly, the sauce did have a nice sweetness complementing the pork belly. However, I felt that the pork belly could have been braised a little more for maximal melt in your mouth tenderness Fried Seaweed Fish -- A first time for this dish, the fish was fried well with a light batter and roasted seaweed, very crisp. Can definitely taste the seaweed, but it's not overpowering and goes with the fish. Lotus Wrapped Ribs -- Of all the dishes, this was the favorite. It comes three to an order. It's rice wrapping a spare rib wrapped by a lotus leaf and steamed. The rice filling is super flavorful, very peppery (maybe a little overzealous with the pepper shaker). The rib inside was fall off the bone tender and flavorful like the rice. Frequenting many Chinese restaurants before, I know I am not to expect 5 star service, but this was probably the worst experience yet. I give this place an extra star, for OK food and value. They make some pretty decent Shanghainese food here. Which means most of the dishes are colorful and moist and go well with rice. I highly recommend this one fried fish dish....I never know what it's called but I always end up ordering it at Shanghainese restaurants. The fish batter sorta has seaweed so that the fish pieces look sorta green. When your entire meal is finished, they provide some Chinese deserts. All of their dishes are on average 8-10 bucks. Parking is plentiful. If their desert didn't do it for you, just walk across towards Genki Living or Bin Bin Konjac. read more

I'm on a Jiangsu/Zhejiang cuisine exploratory mission in the SGV, and Chang's Garden was the third stop on my list, after Long Xing Ji and Mei Long Village. Chang's stands out for being slightly swankier than your average Chinese hole-in-the-wall eatery...as in they had booths and un-papered walls! We got here early on a Saturday and were seated right away, but as families trickled in, the lazy Susan tables filled up and it was pretty bumpin' by 7pm. Our dishes, preceded by a complementary peanut amuse bouche (xiao3 chi1) and tea, came out quickly one after another. 178. SPICY BRAISED BEEF NOODLE SOUP: I had a mad BNS craving, and this hit the spot. I requested this non-spicy to avoid the layer of chili oil that typically just gets dumped on top for spicy flavoring at Eastern Chinese places. The beef was tender, not very tendony, accompanied by baby bok choy. The mildly oily broth wasn't the best I've ever had, but a rich enough rendition. 77. FISH HEAD WARM POT: I ordered this with salt instead of soy sauce, and spicy, and only the prior request was honored. I think I was too busy being in awe at the size of the dish to send it back. This comes in a casserole pot of the size of which I can best compare to the Pensieve in Harry Potter, filled with napa cabbage, semi-firm tofu, bamboo, flat mung bean noodles, and of course, half of a giant fish head and collar in a clearish, whitish broth. Very comparable in format to the version at Mei Long but much less rich, which you could taste in the broth. Not sure what variety fish it was, but nothing particularly fatty. What was interesting though is that the fish was deep fried before being added to the soup, which I could tell from the wrinkly skin--surprisingly tasty even in its soggy state. Not the best fish dish I've ever had, but it tasted fresh and the meat was tender, and I haven't yet met a fish head I didn't enjoy. There was, however, an issue of underseasning, which I solved by dragging my fish through the sauce for the spare ribs. 94. SPARE RIBS IN SHANGHAI STYLE: Bony but tasty, with a sauce sweetness level between that of Long Xing Ji's and Mei Long Villages. That is, medium sweet, not too vinegary. A tasty sauce. Meat wasn't fall-off-the-bone tender, because this is a cuisine where the eaters enjoy gnawing on the bones. It just tastes better if you have to work for it. We ordered 3 dishes to go, which were well-packaged and brought out with our check: 96. SWEET & SOUR PORK CHOP 97. SPARE RIBS IN SPECIAL BROWN SAUCE 170. FISH WITH WESTLAKE STYLE Enjoyable meal, but for me, the food fell short of what I experienced at Long Xing Ji. I know I was supposed to order the seaweed fried fish and the lotus leaf-wrapped pork ribs, but that's just not what I came here for, okay? food is really good here. came here for family gathering during lunch special hours. we probably ordered 7 dishes and walked away happy, full without a hole in the wallet. i would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic shanghainese cuisine. -1 star not because the food wasn't good, but because we ordered the beef roll which smelled kind of bad and might have spoiled. understandable as the sliced beef needs to be marinated, sliced and kept in the fridge for serving (few days).. maybe it was out too long so it smelled funky but changs garden was made aware and they promptly took the dish away and did not charge us.. as a professional courtesy and good customer service, they provided red bean crepe for desert (free of charge). i am a food critic however i understand sometimes mistakes can be made and as human beings we need to be cognizant of what goes on in a busy chinese WOK kitchen. read more

Me and my friend were craving chinese food and decided to check out Chang's Garden since this restaurant is always packed full of chinese people :) Their menu is HUGE. Most of the stuff I've never had or even heard of. We ended up going for something safe: shang hai style chow mein and kung pow chicken. This probably isn't thier best dish since most people were ordering all sorts of different items (stuff I didn't recognize).. But we were pleasantly surprised! The food was very very good and thier portions were also pretty big. Only downside is that its a little bit on the expensive side for chinese food. This place has great soups. Make sure you try the CLAM & MELON SOUP and the BAMBOO FUNGUS WITH SPINACH SOUP. I've come here repeatedly with my family since I was a kid, and my favorite dish is the PORK SPARE RIBS IN LOTUS LEAF. The pork is always super tender (falls off the bone), and the bones are also so soft that you can usually even eat them too. It's kind of a spicy dish, though, so be aware. My favorites here are the green onion pancake (seriously though, I haven't yet found a place that makes it better than they do!) and their 8 flavor rice cake dessert. Everything else is good, but doesn't particularly stand out to me. Service is good too, but not outstanding either. They're also particularly nice to us since we're such old customers, so I wonder if they treat other people similarly. However, it's still pretty good service for an Asian restaurant. This place is a pretty good size, and it never feels quite that crowded even when they are busy. I really like the booth seats, and everything is well lit. But nothing super special about the decor. Would recommend this place for good Shanghainese food in the immediate area. I will probably come here for more years to come haha. read more

The food was okay, but heavy and a bit too salty. This is coming from someone who loves salty food. (And heavy food, for that matter.) I live right around the corner from Shanghai Dumpling King in San Francisco, and I frequent them regularly, so I'm used to Shanghai cuisine. While there are several Shanghai dishes on the menu, Hangzhou cuisine is different, and we only tried a few of the items, so we may not have ordered correctly. The seaweed-fried fish had an interesting, subtle flavor in the batter, but the fish itself was unremarkable. I enjoyed the lotus-wrapped spare rib, which is steamed in sticky rice. Good five spice flavor, and not too sweet. Plus, I dig sticky rice. The tea-smoked duck was well-cooked, but I couldn't detect the subtle flavor of the tea, and it was too salty overall. I would go again to try some of the others Hangzhou dishes (Tong Po Pork, West Lake steamed fish), but I'm not in a hurry to come back. Jonathan Gold claims that this place deserves a Michelin star, which I think is a huge exaggeration (although I like the idea of giving more down-home, local favorites Michelin stars). you haven't had Shanghai/Hangzhou food before, there's definitely some stuff there that's unique. read more

Chang's Garden can NOT compare to Giang Nan on Garfield Blvd.....No wonder Chang's Garden has to advertise so much on TV! Their food is just decent, but prices are very expensive.......One thing I do admit, this place is clean, but that's about it. Decent expensive food with clean environment, more suited for P.F. Chang's clientele. I'll stick with the typical authentic style with lower prices and better tasting food that will build up my immune system. This place has amazing Taiwanese style beef noodle soup and beef rolls. The beef noodle soup got to be the best in town. You just have to try it then you will believe me. The service is staff is friendly. They speak fluent Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The price is great for the portion sizes. read more

Despite single serving prices, it's all family style. The beef noodle was so great. General tsao's was probably one of the worst we've ever had. Beef rolls were a bit weak on the sauce so on the dry side... Chicken noodle soup was bland. Would go back for the spicy beef soup but i'm glad we found this place! read more

I'm not sure about the somewhat scathing reviews previous, but this is by far the best Shanghainese food in the area... and I should know, I'm Shanghainese. My family has been searching for great food and have been bouncing from place to place and we have chosen this restaurant to be our main place to go. The thing with Shanghainese food is that you have know what to order. If you don't, you can very well find yourself stuck with something that may not be great. I second the choice of Dong Bo Pork as it is absolutely delicious. It's extremely fatty and sweet and close but not quite at the level of what you find at restaurants by Xin Tian Di in Shanghai. Another favorite of mine is the pork rib in lotus leaf. Everyone who goes orders it. It's especially good if you like spicy foods cause that dish has a kick to it. Another suggestion is the Shanghai fried cake noodles (Shanghai Cao Nian Gao). This place fills up really really quickly so be sure to get there early to beat the rush. Parking is limited, so you may have to find some spots on the street. There is no outdoor seating here. read more

CANTONESE LOVERS BEWARE! THIS IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT, A CANTO RESTAURANT! Whew! With that said, it's time for a review! Chang's Garden specializes in Zhejiang Cuisine, and a bit from Shanghai. I came here with my mom and we ordered more than $60 worth of food. Um..yea, too much food for two small Asian ladies. We searched and scanned all the other tables before we ordered...that must be the reason why we ordered so much food. That and hunger. To Order: 1. Pork ribs wrapped in lotus leaves. This is a MUST! The ribs are soft and fall off the bones. It also comes with sticky rice! I would say this is THE Chang's Garden specialty. 2. Mrs. Maw Fish Soup (?). It's roughly $16 but totally worth it! One of the best I've ever had. I LOVE SOUP!! 3. Fried Seaweed Fish. I'm not a fried fish fan since I like my fish steamed, but this was really good! The fish was fresh, and they fry it right before serving it! YUM! The other things we tried, such as the green onion pancakes, are really not worth mentioning. Stick with the three suggestions above and you're good to go! Service and Ambiance: Typical of a Chinese restaurant. Loud and a lot of clattering and chattering. When you want something, be sure to holler and wave. This place is pretty expensive when it comes to Chinese food. They're always busy, but when you get a table, the food is great. They have great appetizers and main entrees. Personally I recommend the chicken lettuce wraps to start off with, then the pork roast and shanghai rice patties. I would have to try this place again, and I might change it to a 5 star restaurant. This place pinged our radars after we found out it was on Jonathan's Gold Top 99 restaurants in Los Angeles... When we got there, got seated straight away, no wait on a Sunday night. The waiters were friendly and service overall was decent. The food here is pretty interesting. They use common chinese ingredients and cooking styles, but most of their dishes are not conventional at all. There's clearly some thought behind the dishes. We ate pork wrapped in lotus leaves, and five spice beef wrapped in pancake, a fried fish dish, hunan beef and a soup. (My favorite was the pork and rice in lotus leaves, there was a spicy kick and it was hot, spicy and well cooked). read more

They also let local farmers come into the restaurant during business hours to sell their produces like flesh vegetables; some waitress were buying from the lady as well. Wondering if restaurant purchase the goods from this lady too? Does this person have the license to sell or she's an authorized farmer? Not comfortable to see that. read more
