Lunch special chicken and string bean $12.99
Christine L.

This is a weekly shanghainese joint my parents go to and the food's great. It's getting harder and harder to find shanghainese places now since it's not the trendy Chinese cuisine of nowadays (you know all the spicy numbing stuff) but you get shao long baos and various dishes here. Regular size shao long baos not the tiny dingtaifung size ugh. Lunch specials are impressive for price and variety.

I had driven past this spot for years and finally visited for dinner on a recent Friday with two friends. We shared a few simple Shanghainese dishes: the house special noodles, fried pork buns, stir-fried rice cakes, stir-fried eggplant, and rice balls with rice wine and red beans for dessert. We didn't realize the House Special Noodles were cooked with eel! It caught us by surprise and felt a bit unusual, but luckily one of my friends happily took care of all the eel pieces. I'm knocking off a star because our dessert clearly didn't have any red beans in it. Not sure if they forgot or if they ran out that day. The restaurant itself isn't fancy and feels a bit dated. It doesn't seem like much has changed since the days when it was Embassy Restaurant. That said, the Shanghainese food here is still pretty solid.

I'm Shanghainese and I love this spot. Their egg rolls and pork buns are authentic, their bok Chou rice also slaps. We got the spicy frog and smoked meat medallions that were also good, frog meh. Taking a star off because they didn't give me my complimentary sweet soup dessert but overall would come back again! Been here a few times, most of the servers are Shanghainese and the place looks like every other Chinese restaurant

Really you can't find anything wrong withy this place, food service all top notch. We had their famous pork perfectly balance flavor and tenderness. Lucky bough there is less people tonight for new year maybe because it's not lunar new year? Soup is excellent, Shanghai rice cake , fried buns? All awesome. I can't name them all since I do t remember but trust me we love them all. We will be back to try some more.

$12.99 lunch special fish

Very impressed with this place. The lunch special menu was unbelievable. It was $12.99 for all the items on the lunch special menu. They had a steamed fish that looked like it should have been $36. All the food tasted great. The service was a bit slow. Just like any other Chinese restaurant, so nothing special. Would definitely be back. HAPPY LUNCH SPECIALING!

No. 8 on the Bund takes over the space that was once Embassy restaurant. They took over the old restaurant with minimal changes besides the menu and cuisine. It is now Shanghainese style with and extensive menu with include classic and fusion items. Pros New menu More seafood items Service is attentive Cons Worn tables and chairs Air conditioning and ventilation is not adequate. Parking lot is way too small for a restaurant of this size, that also shares with another establishment. We had a banquet at #8 on the Bund this weekend the private room. Many of the service staff were recognizable from other restaurants. The food was excellent. The facilities were lacking. And after 10 bottles of wine it was finally time to leave.

Finally made it out to try this place out, and we were not disappointed. My current fave Shanghainese restaurant for "banquet" like food. Everything we had was good and the service was friendly. Food came out fast and they have private rooms. A few things to keep in mind though: the place is tastier (IMO) than Shanghailander, but it's not as fancy inside. Also, parking can be annoying as the lot is a little bit small.

I came here for lunch today and tried their house chicken and the spinach with tofu curd. It's amazing how great the quality is.

My former work mom brought me here for lunch. She and her husband are fantastic chefs so I would follow them anywhere because it's always good. I am trying to understand how anyone could give this place low ratings. This is typical Shanghai food and Shanghai is one of the top food cities in the world in my opinion. The chefs in this kitchen have incredible wok skills and an extremely hot stove. I can't remember the last time I had string beans this crisp. Same for the shrimp - perfect texture. The eggplant had a crisp skin and soft center. The braised pork you could tell was cooked for a while because the sauce was reduced nicely. The dishes were all simple but cooked to perfection. The flavors were all distinct and delicious. For weekday lunch they have specials. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes.

This place has been the replacement for Embassy Kitchen, and while the interior design hasn't changed much, the menu is now drastically different, with mainly Shanghainese dishes rather than Southern Chinese/GuangDong dishes. They're not the best Shanghainese dishes I've had, the quantity usually isn't the most, and service is usually average, especially if you don't speak Mandarin. Some dishes are unique and flavorful, such as the eel and pork belly, but others can sometimes be bland or dry. I think they sometimes have lunch specials, but usually not on weekends. Overall this is a place I wouldn't mind coming once in awhile, but not too often am I craving to come here.

It was my first visit to No. 8 on the Bund. I was hoping for some authentic Shanghaiese cuisine, alas it wasn't so. Don't get me wrong. The food is okay just didn't meet my expectations. When I saw Shanghai dishes on the menu I had high hopes. Well, the hunt continues. There are plenty of seats at this restaurant, even round tables for large parties and private rooms too. Service here is acceptable. If you are in need of a place for a large family gathering last minute, you may want to consider No. 8 as a last resort.

I grew up eating a lot of Shanghainese cuisine, so my standards are pretty high--but this place is authentic! The only downside is I do find them a bit greasy sometimes, even after asking for less grease. I tried the bean curd with pork, and it was excellent--great flavor and super soft bean curd. The pan-fried buns were also really tasty. They had a nice crispy bottom, though they weren't as juicy on the inside as I'd hoped. Definitely still worth getting though. Will definitely come back to try some of their other dishes!

*** Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants (2022): #86 ***…read more Ended up at WangJia Restaurant this past Saturday night for dinner for my first time. We arrived around 6:15pm without reservations, and unfortunately, every table was taken. The wait ended up being ~15 minutes, which was not too bad. We decided to walk over to Blossom Market Hall down the street for a quick drink to pass the time. To eat, we ordered the Stewed Duck Soup Noodle ($13.99), Shanghai Style Sweet And Sour Spare Rib ($16.99), and the Crab Meat With Dry Noodle ($14.99). Each dish was satisfying. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the Stewed Duck Soup Noodle. The Crab Meat With Dry Noodle (one of my favorite dishes I tried in Shanghai) was admittedly a bit of a letdown. Overall, our experience here was positive one. Service was friendly, and the food came out surprisingly fast. The space itself is on the smaller side, but the ambiance is nice and intimate. If you're in the area, I'd recommend giving this place a try. I'd like to come back at some point to try more of their menu items.

Shanghai Stewed Pork and Squid with Tea Tree Mushroom: The dish is served in a classy clay vessel. This is Chinese surf and turf at its finest. There are super tender pork morsels with a little fat on the edges. The pork and the squid complement each other so well through the long braising with sweet, savory, and ginger flavors. The tea tree mushroom is straw-shaped and wrinkly with a nice texture. Dining Area: There are about a dozen tables inside. Parking: There's a parking lot, but many of the spots seem to be reserved for other businesses. There are also many street parking spaces.

Everything is good and absolutely savory so be ready for umami left and right. Personally for me, I'm a sucker for anything braised or fried so surprise surprise, we got a healthy dose of braised pork and fried seaweed fish! Both were absolutely salivating so if you're stuck between one or the other, just get both. Pan fried buns are also another guilty pleasure of mine, so be liberal with how much you order, you won't regret it. Stuff yourself silly with the buns, just try not to splash any soup onto yourself. Beyond those 3 dishes, we ordered some noodles and vegetables but meh, protein dishes are where it's at. So all in all, this is a palace fit for a king/queen like you, eat up, be merry, maybe come back for round 2!

The interior feels nice and lavish, and the dishes are served on these massive plates that really give off a luxury dining vibe. Servers were also nice for the most part. Food-wise, I ordered the yan du xian, xiao long bao, and a crab dish that came with the thin wraps usually used for duck. The xiao long bao was acceptable, though the flavor was definitely different from what I'm used to at other local spots like Din Tai Fung. Not bad, just different. The crab dish was actually pretty tasty and something I'd definitely order again. The yan du xian, unfortunately, was the weak point for me. I have this dish relatively often, so I had certain expectations going in. The soup had this strange stench to it that I can't really describe beyond just tasting "stinky." It may have been from the pork or bamboo shoots, though the pork itself tasted okay to me. Whatever it was, the flavor just felt off, and I'd probably skip that dish next time. Overall though, I still enjoyed the experience enough to maybe come back and try other dishes like the acorn fish and braised pork, but will need some time first to forget the yan du xian flavor...

Also, rice is free!! And cooked soooo well like not mushy at all. I know some places charge extra for rice but not here. You also get complimentary edamame and miso soup. Hunan Style Fried Pork-- it looks intimidating but the chilis are the fragrant kind!! Super mild baby spice, not like eating serranos. Super good flavor, wok hei is there, definitely getting again Stir Fried Pork Belly-- Similar to Hunan style but instead of chilis it's ... onion. There's so much onion. We just picked out the meat. Order the Hunan one with chili instead of this. Steam Greenland Halibut-- ORDER MULTIPLE!! One is not enough to share with the table!! It's so good you pretty much just want your own. It's like banquet style whole steam fish softness and texture and flavor.... Without the enormous price tag. Braised Pork in Brown Sauce-- Melty fatty tender goodness. The sauce is super rich and savory. Pretty much everything here is made to eat with rice so if it's too salty for you.. eat more rice. Stir fry dry bean curd with pork-- Look I know it's not the most appetizing looking or all that in terms of color palette.. BUT IT IS GOOOOD! Not all restaurants can make a good tofu dish but wow this is amazing. The flavor profile reminds me of that bean curd appetizer at din tai fung with the seaweed strips and bean sprouts. It's savory, slightly vinegary, meat is really tender and the tofu texture just goes sooo well with everything. Fried squid in three flavor sauce-- WARNING!! There's the clear squid bone (?) attached so make sure you pull it out !!! Flavor wise it's my first time having a sanbei dish that wasn't chicken. It's good though! Super tender, just make sure to pull out that clear strip and you're all set. Kung Pao Chicken-- Basic dish but NOOOT basic flavors!! Best kung pao chicken I've had in my life my god. We ordered it for the kid lolol but we probably ate more than he did. The chicken is super soft and tender and there's mala spice!! It's not the Americanized flavoring but actual spice and mala. Stir Fry Fish Fillet in Spicy Sauce-- Super soft fish and it comes with tofu too. Flavor is kind of like mapo tofu? It's good with rice!! No complaints 10/10 had a great time, love the price, and definitely will be coming back. There's a big parking lot too!

Outside of the restaurant, there's an outdoor space where they seem to store extra chairs and tables. I suppose it can be set up for Al fresco dining since I saw a solo customer at a small table. The interior shows a lot of red and a hint of classy decor at some point. There are some private dining rooms down a hallway but I'm not sure if they're being used. The main dining room has mostly tables for 6 or more, and some smaller ones for 4 along the perimeter. I suspect most people come for their very reasonably priced lunch specials because that was the only menu given to us, so we went along. Food: Crispy fish filet with seaweed. Compared to many other places, their fish contains a lot more seaweed in the batter, and served with vinegar, which is very weird. Ideally, it should have a small side of salt & white pepper mix. 3.5/5 Hunan tofu: Full of flavor, hint of heat with shredded pork. Delicious. 4.5/5 Steamed whole fish: This was overcooked and the fish was a bit dry, and could use more flavor. 2/5 Braised pork belly in brown sauce. Fatty, meaty, tender and rich, served with a few quail eggs as opposed to stewed eggs. 5/5 Of you like pork belly Sautéed shrimp in egg white was not what we expected. Thinking it was a dry dish, instead it resembled shrimp in soft tofu with some light broth. Not my favorite. 2.5/5 Beef and scallions: All beef slices were very tender, and the scallions added a nice fragrant flavor to this dish. 4.5/5 The service was energetic, as if the servers appeared excited about something. The vibe was bustling and the noise level just increased over time so we just stopped talking.
