Just a quick update: We revisited Chang's while dropping off our daughter for her spring semester and had a great meal. Very tasty and well-prepared. This time we had their Peking duck and it was nice - crispy skin, juicy meat, with plenty of thin pancakes to roll them up in Very enjoyable and so glad to see it was the real thing, not just substituting roast duck as some places do - it is completely different. We also had their salt & pepper squid which was outstanding! Storrs is definitely lucky to have this place! Next time: we plan to try the crispy fish. read more

I am shocked by the low rating for Changs Garden because it is such a hidden gem in Storrs. Their authentic Chinese menu is fantastic with a wide selection of Sechuan dishes. My favorite dish was the cold sweet potato noodle appetizer, it was too good to even get a picture! Their hot tea is also fantastic and all the food is reasonably priced. The service is fast and the staff is really helpful with picking out dishes based on your spice tolerance and what you're used to. read more

Wow, I saw a low Yelp rating for my long-time favorite Chinese restaurant and had to review! Tbh I'm not sure what the hater reviewers are talking about and question their taste . Chang's is solid and delicious, everything is like good quality super flavorful Chinese food. Not greasy, not too salty, and fresh. The staff/owners are very friendly and have been in the community for years- they know most of us locals and seem to take a lot of our Uconn students from Asia under their wing. Our (first) visit to Chang's Garden was terrific. We were warmly greeted by the owner and immediately welcomed to the dining room. Water and menus were quickly delivered. We chose Lemon Chicken and Golden Crispy Duck. I also enjoyed a cup of their Hot and Sour soup...very good! (in fact I got a quart of it to take home). Both entrees came with steamed rice and arrived quickly. The Lemon Chicken came with a side of lemon sauce for dipping which was just right (not too sour); this entree was not greasy but filling ... and still large enough to take home leftovers. The Duck was terrific with a delicious glaze; there was enough so I could enjoy that on my rice also. The staff were extremely friendly and we spent some time after our meal just chatting with them. All in all a delightful experience, with good food in a super clean restaurant. We will be back soon. read more

We ordered Chinese takeout Friday night and just like some of the reviews stated on Yelp, you literally need a microscope to find the pork or chicken within the lo mein or noodles totally it with this restaurant because I've read other Customers Reviews and now I am reporting it to be true. If I wanted vegetables I would've ordered vegetables but I did not order that so they should refund me my money but I know they won't Changs should be embarrassed by this. I understand things are tough but people are paying the extra dollar or two dollars for a pro Tien it should be in there and Wen should not have to look for it underneath all the tasty lo mein noodles! read more

This is the worst Chinese food I've had in years. First time/last time experience: I ordered the fried rice cakes with vegetables. I remember first learning how to make these and having several kitchen disasters where the texture was off. Turns out my worst attempts were still 100 times better than the inedible mush I received. They weren't chewy, they weren't firm. They somehow managed to be grainy and yet EXTREMELY soggy. They butchered one of my favorite dishes, and I wasted money on it, because I couldn't eat any of it at all. It went Straight to the garbage. I hate wasting food, and I have eaten plenty of things that were pretty bad just to save on food waste. I just couldn't do it this time. I also ordered the garlic scallops. Usually that's spicy when I order it other places. Not here, not even a little bit. In addition to it not being spicy, it had very little flavor. Also, they gave me shrimp, not scallops, so the order was wrong. Lastly, I ordered the sesame chicken. Might as well call it corn syrup chicken. It had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. It tasted like breaded chicken covered in plain corn syrup with a few sesame seeds sprinkled atop. Icing on the cake: it had hair in it. Never ever again. read more

Firstly, this restaurant has the most authentic Sichuan food in the Storrs/Willimantic area. If you don't believe me, look at the sheer number of Chinese international students who come to this restaurant on the daily. They have a "Chinese American" menu and a more authentic Sichuan menu. Absolutely everything I have ever tried of the Sichuan menu has been incredible. I can't say the same about the "Chinese American" menu, but their ACTUAL authentic food makes up for it. Besides the incredible food, the service is so quick and the people are incredibly friendly. I believe she may be the owner, but the lady who is at the front counter, seating people and ringing out To-Go orders is so personable and friendly. She always has a smile on her face, and remembers me each time I come in, even though I don't come in that often. She asks me about my life and school, how my classes are going. She really goes above and beyond to make her customers feel comfortable. If you look at the other "Chinese" restaurant on UConn's campus, you will not see nearly as many international students there. I can't think of a clearer indicator of the authenticity and quality of the food. read more

Came to get crab rangoon, left with one egg roll and disappointment. I'm not gonna lie, the egg roll was good, but the lady in the front was so disrespectful, giving me an eye as if I was a gorilla stampeding her store. She did the same exact thing to a friend of mine who ordered chicken wings. However, when two Asian women entered the establishment her entire demeanor altered. The best Chinese cuisine I've had in years, and I have eaten from MANY establishments in CT! The fried foods are not greasy, and are cooked to perfection. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. My only regret is that this is my son's senior year at UCONN so I don't think I will be making the trip.up there very often after May '25. Haven't been here in a while. Got some food for me and my daughter to take out for dinner. I had the Chow Fun w/ Shrimp and the Eggplant Treasure which come with scallops, shrimp and chicken. I didn't get the chicken. The eggplant dish was good, however, along with the chow fun, the portions were too small for the price. The chow fun had a burnt flame type of taste that happens when the food is sitting in too hot a pan and gets touched by flames. The shrimp in the chow fun were very small too, as opposed to the shrimp in the Treasure dish which were much larger and quite good. Don't think I've ever had such bad Chinese food. The lemon chicken was awful, it was just a sliced chicken cutlet with weak watery sauce. The shrimp fried rice had 3 tiny shrimp and was barely passable. The hot and sour soup was just spicy beef broth. Even the simplest of dishes Egg drop soup was awful, no taste. The authentic Chinese food is OK, but it's overpriced for the portion and quality. The waitress was very friendly and attentive, and she even packed the leftover food for us. Overall, I would say Sichuan pepper is a much better choice. The biggest turndown for me is the dining environment; I would give Chang's garden a 4-star if not for the obnoxious environment. The lady owner often talks with young Chinese student customers so loud that I could hear their conversation very clearly even though I was sitting two tables away from them; on top of the loudness, I would consider the topic is kind of inappropriate in a restaurant setting. For this reason, I haven't been to Chang's garden for six years. Now, six years later, I decided to give it another try and hope I could have a good dining experience. However, the same thing happened again; not just did the lady owner chat loudly, but the guy owner also talked loudly to the customers. The topic the guy owner brought up made me feel very uncomfortable. I'm not a creep who wants to hear others' conversation, but it's hard to filter it when it's loud and in your first language. These are the few times that I sincerely wished I didn't understand Chinese. From now on, I don't think I ever want to dine in again; I may order take-outs only if I crave some particular Chinese dish that only Chang's garden has. read more

I formed a hypothesis after trying these dishes: The General Tso - was nearly passable, with a little bit of pineapple flavor and pleasant heat from dried chilis. It's responsible for the second star. The Fried Rice - was utterly inexcusable, with a hint of dish soap flavor to boot. After finishing the Hot Sour Soup, Beef on a Stick, Ribs, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and Chicken Wings - my hypothesis was confirmed. This restaurant is simply too close to a college to be any good. They know for a fact that they don't need to put any effort in. Chang's has the best Chinese food in the Storrs area. There are 2 menus, Americanized and Authentic. Everything is freshly made, portions are great and flavors are amazing! I love their egg drop soup, it come with lotus root and enoki mushrooms in it. Very light in flavor and never glopy (they're light handed on the cornstarch). I've eaten in for lunch, dinner and had take-out. Quality is the same across the board. Portions are smaller for take-out, but that's probably my only minor complaint. read more

They do offer boba (tapioca ball) drinks, which are difficult to find in the area. My friend and I went to Chang's Garden for the first time since we have heard many good reviews on their food. I got chicken lo mein and an egg roll while my friend got the sweet and sour chicken. It was absolutely terrible. The egg roll was fine, but the lo mein was salty and tasted soggy. My friend said the sweet and sour chicken was bad, so I decided to try it. The food was good but it was not as hot as we expected. We ordered a sweet dish, beef jerky, a ma po tofu, scallion pancake and a wonton dish. We didn't really like the wonton dish as we had tried better versions elsewhere. I do strongly recommend the scallion pancake as it was crispy and hot. The price range was normal. I'd probably give it closer to 3 1/2 stars because while it'd probably be a 3 compared to Chinese restaurants elsewhere (I'm Chinese myself), this is as good as the Storrs area gets. The food is decent but mostly unmemorable. I've had a few dishes that I'd order again, but most of it is your standard run-of-the-mill fare. The golden crispy duck is very good, as is the pork with spicy peppers (I forget the exact name). I usually alternate between those two dishes. The fried rice is also surprisingly good, though not something I'd order on its own. I'd say skip the bubble tea, since it's not very good. What keeps me coming back to Chang's isn't the food but the familiarity. The owner is super nice and accommodating--we've had 30-people dinners here before and they've never complained. Service is very efficient, which is appreciated when there's 30 people ordering at one time. Even though I think the food is pretty average, there's a special place in my heart for this restaurant. read more

I have been pretty torn regarding whether I should write a review for this place. As one of the few restaurants within the walking distance from the Storrs UConn campus, this is one of the restaurants I have first visited when I started my studies at UConn 3+ years ago. This place is quite interesting to begin with, particularly because, in addition to its Americanized Chinese takeout food that you can grab from most Chinese fast food places, Chang's offers a Chinese menu for diners (mostly Asians, of course) who are looking for traditional Chinese food. But that's not all, I always find the hidden gem of this place to be its daily special. It's usually not on the menu and you have to ask the waiter/waitress about it. I'd say this is a high risk-high reward, given the food can either blow your mind or you might simply get the expression of "what in the world is this"?! Of course, another notable thing that diners would say about Chang's is that it's overpriced. Considering to be more or less a monopoly couple years ago serving decent Chinese food in the area, the markups are understandable (though I didn't like it anyway); however, since the food segment is getting more competitive in the area, as smart business owners, I don't think Chang's had adjusted their charges recently despite of the inflation (please do correct me if I am wrong about this). The waiter/waitresses and the owner are all pretty friendly people, so that's a plus. But they probably should renovate their interior some time soon as it is no longer on par with some of the restaurants around. read more

Having lived in SF, NYC, Boston, Hong Kong, Taipei.. Most Chinese restaurants in CT are pretty disappointing. Chang's Garden is no different. Everything is swimming in the same brown sauce or deep fried with tons of thick breading or accompanied with a sweet sauce. I recently ordered.. Shrimp with walnuts - it came as thickly battered shrimp on a bed of steamed broccoli surrounded by sweetened walnuts and accompanied with a sweet, orange "duck" sauce. DISGUSTING. Red-cooked tofu with mushrooms - silken tofu and mushrooms came swimming (or rather drowning) in a non-descript brown sauce. ick. no flavor salt-pepper pork chops. Now this was ridiculous. This is usually a delectable dish of fried pork ribs that are coated with salt, pepper, hot peppers, fried onions, garlic. finger licking good. What we got was something that looked like "char-suy" pork (BBQ) sliced, dipped in the same batter as the shrimp accompanied by the ever present orange duck sauce. The only thing edible was the fried race and fried noodles - but I suppose you can't go wrong with the college student staple. First thing to realize is that there really are TWO menu's - one Americanized and one for those who either are Chinese or like real Chinese food. The American menu is good, but not exceptional. The Chinese menu is where the interesting food begins. If you think American it is barbecue pork - Chinese it is spicy pork bellies. Another comparison is say beef with pea pods and beef with green chilies. The later is really 5 alarm hot!! But real good. The best way to discover the Chinese menu is to ask for Wei Wei and be prepared to be adventuresome. Another hint that it is a favorite with Chinese people is to look around - often 60%+ are Chinese. Liz and I have been going there for years. It has ALWAYS been a top-notch establishment. Liz is in love with their Egg Foo Yung dish. I love their General Tso's Chicken dish. The owner/manager is a very nice man who works very hard to ensure all of his customers are happy. You cannot believe many of the old Yelp reviews below who have trashed this place. This is Storrs Connecticut and you cannot compare food here with the Chinese food in China, or even California. One review praised them on several counts, but then awarded them with a 3/5 rating. Three stars when compared to every other Chinese restaurant on earth... It's a good place, especially for the hamlet of Storrs, Connecticut. But it naturally pales in comparison to anything within 50 miles of New York... or China, I assume. As is true of most sit-down Chinese restaurants these days, the environment is very stale, quiet, old fashioned... but the food is good, and professionally prepared. I especially like their battered and fried dishes like General Tso's and Orange Chicken. I guess it's hard to screw up a dish that's coated in fat and drenched in gooey, sugary, salty sauce. Lunch is a nice perk. Most of the combos are six or seven bucks a plate. Add a few bucks for tax and tip, and you've got yourself a $10 business lunch. Nice. Don't expect the world, but expect Storrs's finest Chinese dining establishment, which I suppose isn't exactly setting the bar high. read more

Horrible experience. Myself and a few friends went here to celebrate a birthday within the group. The food was alright - nothing noteworthy. Upon time to pay the check, I left cash. The waitress then returned to our table after taking the money and told me there was not enough. I recounted and recounted the bills only to determine that it was truly all there. The waitress then informed me that the tip wasn't large enough for her satisfaction. She refused to leave our table until she got more money. Last I checked, gratuity amount is left up to the consumer - NOT the waitstaff. read more
