Having grown up eating Chinese food (both at home and in restaurants) -- but not knowing how to cook it *sigh* -- I never fail to appreciate going to a Chinese restaurant that serves food that doesn't look or taste like Panda Express. I wasn't aware that there were two menus, as previous reviewers are saying, so I guess I just got the "authentic menu". The food was definitely very good (ask whoever is waiting you to suggest the most authentic dishes), but compared to most Chinese restaurants I've gone to, the portions are relatively small and the prices are high. But I guess I can't blame them -- there's hardly any competition in rural Connecticut, so they can get away with charging those prices. read more

Chang's have served as comfort food for many. The dishes ranges from typical American Chinese restaurants to dishes a bit more "authentic". There is a large variety of dishes to choose from. From my understanding, the two 'menus' have been merged into one. I usually don't have a regular favorite here since I don't believe the items are as memorable. I would definitely recommend getting the peking duck or any of the pork dishes. As other's have said, what keeps me coming back are the owners and the staff. Their liveliness and kindness draws me back to grab a bit for comfort and a reminder of home. read more

Very mediocre Chinese food. We ordered some for take out and everything was edible, but nothing more. We had mu shu pork, steamed dumplings, chicken with broccoli, hot and sour soup, scallion pancakes, spring rolls and more. The price was fine, but still, we won't be trying again. read more

This is the best Chinese food I've had in Connecticut. I loved it in college, and until I moved south in CT, didn't realize how good I had it. I keep looking, but haven't found any Chinese food that comes close. I love their hunan chicken (especially extra spicy) and the amazing chicken. I don't normally write reviews but I feel as though I should at every restaurant so I can help others pick a place to eat. The reviews here are slightly out of date or not super new so I thought I would give it a try. I walked in and wasn't even greeted by eye contact or a hello I just walked up after the party in front left Asked if I could sit down the women at the desk said yes. No one walked me to a table and the waitress just looked confused , didn't ask if I wanted water or anything. I was handed a menu and she walked away AGAIN. She came over and I asked for beverages and she blinked and walked away AGAIN no "okay yeah let me do that for you " I ordered my food after my water was handed to me and she asked to see the menu because she was uncertain about a drink and walked away ..wasn't even done ordering my food ? She came back and I added my soup to the order. The people who work here are not UCONN students so the rudeness and not being tentative is uncalled for . read more

As a student at UConn, I find Chang's to be an attractive off-campus (yet, very close to campus) lunch. The Americanized menu offers all of the usuals: some of them are pretty good, some are just okay. However, I once ordered from the Authentic menu and was surprised by how VERY good the food was. Before heading to an event on the UCONN campus stopped here for dinner beforehand. The location was extremely convenient as located on the main street by the campus. Quickly greeted & seated and started with an appetizer of pork dumplings that were OK, fairly standard but tasty. We then split a chinese eggplant with scallops, shrimp & chicken in a spicy brown sauce that was outstanding. Also enjoyed the crispy duck & overall the delicious dinnere. read more

Not particularly exciting, but this is Storrs, right? Compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area, I've heard this one is the best. I had their General Tso's chicken and the lo mein, which was greasy and delicious. Fairly reasonably priced, and the dining room is clean and inviting. read more

Walkable distance from UConn campus. The food was ordinary to me, nothing special compare to another Chinese restaurant. Lunch price is ok, around 6 dollars. Dinner price is a bit expensive for students (over 10 bucks). I would rather just spend that $10 from the all you can eat buffet in same town instead. read more

There are some things you expect at a Chinese restaurant. Sometimes, you even get a nice surprise. But Chang's Garden offered neither. I have driven past Chang's several times in the past few weeks, and I thought my wife and I should try it out. There are relatively few sit down Chinese restaurants in the area so we always check out a new one when we see it. First impressions were good. There were quite a few Asian patrons entering and leaving the restaurant. We walked in and there were several customers waiting for take out. We were led into the dining area and led to a completely bare table. Paper place mats and silverware were quickly place and hot tea was served. I noticed it was very bright in the room. My wife asked me if I saw any sugar for her tea. Ummm... Why no Hunny. It took a few minutes but I was able to flag down a waitress. Great. The menu was typical, there were a few variations, but nothing spectacular. We placed our order. Me: Fried Dumplings, General's Chicken, very spicy with no Broccoli Wife: Won Ton soup, Sesame Chicken. The waitress did not write it down. A minute later and soup was on the table. It was a very clear broth and had very little flavor. Normally we add soy sauce to the soup, but there was none to be had. It was then we realized that we had no noodles with hot mustard or duck sauce either. Hmmm... The Dumplings arrived many minutes later. They were tasty but greasy. I went to wash it down with some water... Ummm. As I said above, there are things you expect at a Chinese restaurant. Having a never empty water glass is one of them. The crunchy noodles are as well. We looked around and saw that none of the tables had them. I asked the waitress for water and promptly got some. My wife's food came. The large plate made the food look tiny. We tried it and it was OK. Again, it was several minutes later before my food arrived. My plate was loaded with broccoli and it was not spicy at all. So.. we ate our OK food with none of the regular things you are used to in a Chinese restaurant. Oh.. no table cloth either. The bill came to $33 and was more than the food and experience was worth. I paid it and decided that we would not be returning. I expected more than I got, and so the search continues.... read more

Love this restaurant. I went there as a student and I occasionally make a trip just for the food.

I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, which was on the "house specialities" list for takeout. I got back to my house and the chicken was raw. I called to notify them that it was raw and that I would like them to try again where I reiterated several times, "make sure it's thoroughly cooked, over cool it if you have to." I drove back and picked up the revised general tso's, went home, and the chicken was not cooked all the way through. Not only is it unsavory, it is unsafe. read more

Prompt take out service, but the quality of some of their items is very disappointing. I recently got the meat dumplings which were extremely rubbery and gristly, so I thought to try the vegetable ones instead. These were watery, mushy, and have a disgusting flavor. This was the worst experience of our lives. We should have known when the menus arrived absolutely disgusting and tattered. Never in my life did I want to leave no tip before tonight. Appetizer platter came with no sauces. Not even soy sauce on the table. We could not get out fast enough which was fine since my entree was never even put in. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Well, I'm from the New Haven area so the Chinese food down there is WAY better and much cheaper. I don't know how people enjoy this place. I've visited this restaurant twice and I've been dissatisfied both times. First, the food is overpriced and you DON'T get your money's worth at all. They're crazy stingy with the portions and it's annoying when you just spent $10-15 dollars on the food. Second, the food isn't all that great. Does not taste authentic whatsoever and is sometimes salty. Egg rolls tasted off and fried rice tasted fake. I'd say to save your money and get some pizza or whatever else there is in the area instead. Don't plan on returning here again. read more

I eat here or take out at least once every two months. Usually lunch specials, and they are fine and reasonably priced. Today, I ordered the Szechuan Noodles -- came to over $6.00 for a pint. I like the cold noodles with sesame peanut sauce, but they tend to use too much peanut butter and there is no kick. Thought I'd try the spicier ones.. but they are practically inedible ... just noodles drowning in this very spicy hot (not temp wise) oil--I probably will take them home and use them with my own broccoli stir fry and add some peanut sauce! Went here on a date. The silver wear was dirty and it kind of disturbed my game. Also, the tea that they served before dinner was HORRIBLE. Other than that the restaurant is clean and the beef with broccoli was very good. She had the chicken lo mane and it was good. Prices were good. read more

We've gone here for years and it's hit or miss...lately miss. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants and we'd get take out frequently, but it has gone downhill. We usually order the same items so it's easy to compare. A few weeks ago our meal was okay, but lacking flavor. We hoped it was just a 'miss' night and tried again last night. Our dinner last night was mostly terrible. The wonton soup was great, actually better than normal, and the crab rangoon's were pretty good, but the rest was just bad. The General Tso's chicken was over cooked to the point you couldn't chew it and had absolutely no flavor except old grease. It went in the garbage. The lo mein had no flavor and was super greasy. The hunan chicken had no flavor at all. Boring chicken and veggies. I don't know if they have a new chef or what, but with several new Asian restaurants recently opened in town, next time we'll skip Chang's and try one of them. read more

Terribly disappointed. The brown sauce was tasteless. The "delicate wine sauce" was brine salty. Fried items - shrimp, chicken fingers were greasy beyond belief. Food is American-style Chinese food. And they charged more tips than I gave from my credit card without noticing me!! The waiter NEVER talked to us during the whole dinner time (including the order step!!! ) and my husband and I thought he is DUMB. The food quality was actually better than average, but the portions were a bit on the small side, for the prices they charged (which was higher than average). But my reason for only giving them one star, is because of the horrible attitude of the staff. Not very friendly at all. They seemed angry and annoyed with the patrons. I always have a good experience at Chang's. There's a wide variety of food so I get my fix of authentic chinese dishes here that I can't get anywhere else. Try the beef noodle soup and the beef wrapped in scallion pancake, you won't go wrong! I find the service to be slower than most places, but the food is worth the wait. read more

The location is great, close to UCONN. The food is OK but they have reduced the portion so they are now on the expensive side. They claim that they don't use MSG but one day I was at the back of the restuarant and saw a 5-gallon sized bucket the label on it contained the word "MSG". I hope it was used to hold other things. read more

Prices are really good for the lunch menu. Staff was super friendly! However I was not very impressed with the food. "Sesame chicken" was a super sweet sauce over chicken with about 10 sesame seeds sprinkled on one piece in the middle. The soup was very tasty. Would come back for great service from our waiter. The manager seemed too rushed to even look at our faces, even with such a small crowd. read more

Really nice service and delicious food here. I had General Tso's Chicken and I was pleasantly surprised that it was not overly sweetened. The hot and sour soup was really good and different from any I've tasted. All Chinese restaurants have different tasting hot and sour soup. At Chang's the flavor was all together different. The appetizers had a different flavor than any I've ever had as well. I suppose I'm overly accustomed to Asian fusion restaurants. My children and I enjoyed our food, but my husband did not - he ordered what I ordered and thought the food was very bland. We will probably return. read more
