I have all these fond memories of the Mongolian Grill, and after a lunch trip with some coworkers, it's gratifying to find that the experience wasn't softened by time, so to speak. What I'm trying to say is that this was some delicious food - food that appeals to me as a programmer, I think, because you get together your components, and then compile (cook) it, see what it's like, and then go back again, fix some things, try it again, as often as you can fit in your stomach. You have no excuse if your food isn't good, because you're the one making it. As for my latest excursion: round one was pineapple pork with ginger and garlic, round two was spicy lamb with vinegar and lime juice, and round three was garlic and sesame chicken and noodles. The people cooking the food looked like they were having fun (I mean, wouldn't you?) My family and I went to this place for lunch while on vacation in Portland. I'm giving it 4 stars because I think the good outweighs the bad. First, the good. The selection of food is good. They have beef, pork,chicken, lamb, fish, and I think turkey too. Veggies selection is good too, and they look fresh. (See pictures.) They have a lot of sauces and the flavor is good. The restaurant is nice, clean and spacious. The waitress came over 2 or 3 times to check on us. Lunch price was only $9, which is fantastic. These are all good. Now, what keeps this place from getting 5 stars from me is how they cook the food. Their chefs are not gentle with the food. They mix and stir so hard that your noodles are all under 2" by the time they're done. Plus, food stick on their inverted wok like crazy, maybe the wok is too hot, or too dry or what, but I've never seen food stick on the cooking surface like that before. After every 3 or 4 servings, the chef was scraping a thick layer of blackened food from the wok. CRAZY! But in the end, the food still tasted good and I enjoyed my meal, so I'm giving it 4 stars. read more

How have I never been here before?! Chang's is an all-you-can-eat Mongolian stir fry buffet that is well worth the $10.95 for lunch. Get in the buffet line and load your plate up with chicken, beef, pork, cod, or lamb. Nurture your meat with some noodles, and add on as many veggies as your heart desires. Douse it with a variety of sauces, and then watch your creation cook in just a few minutes. Enjoy, and then go back up for seconds - or thirds - or as much as you can eat! Your never-ending meal comes with soup, rice, and spring rolls too, so I can't imagine you'll leave here hungry. Carb coma, ahoy! Was a little skeptical when I arrived. There was one customer in the place and like 200 seats. It was one of the cleanest restaurants I've been to in all of portland and gresham combined. There are TONS of mixing for your food, plenty of great quality meats and a guide to help you sauce the bowls. The meats are great quality and cut and they have plenty available so you don't wait around for refills. The veggies and toppings are all great quality as well. It was DELICIOUS. You'll want to make sure to check the hours first. It's $10.95 for lunch and $15 or so for dinner. All are all you can eat. But I think they close down after their lunch hour at 2;30. The the shrimp my boyfriend and I got from changs had dark line along their backs, which is the fecal tract of the shrimp that is supposed to be cleaned out of them. When we asked our waiter about it he said "well everyone else eats them like that and no one has said anything" well good job for getting away with it this long. A long time ago, I went to my first Chang's Mongolian Grill on NE 122nd, and it was such a disappointment. Fast forward to 2012, Jesse and I were hungry on Friday night, but we didn't want to venture out of our SW P Town area. We drove to Chang's because he told me it's pretty pretty good. The place was packed, but we got seated right away. The server came and asked if we would like Egg Flower Soup or Hot & Sour soup, a salad, and if we would like rice or crepes. We opted for Hot & Sour soup, no salad, and just steamed rice. Then we proceeded to the buffet line. They stocked everything pretty full. They have frozen beef, chicken, pork, Salmon, Cod, shrimps, imitation crabs, noodles, tofu, and veggies. I piled up two bowls, one for my meat and one for my noodles & veggies. I seasoned everything with hot sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, cooking sherry, lime juice, and salt. We brought our bowls to the cooking station and those cooks worked their butts off. They were fast and fun to watch. We ate our food and noodles filled me up quickly. We went for second round and I just got some meats and veggies without noodles. Surprisingly, second round was better than the first one. I was thinking maybe because I didn't get any noodles, so my meal wasn't to greasy, and too filling. One thing that was a let down was the hot & sour soup. It was too watery and there was no flavor at all. It's not hot nor sour. The good news is that we like our meals. We barely finished our plates, the server came, and asked if we were ready for ice creams. WOOT? We didn't know that our meals came with ice creams. We couldn't refused ice creams so we accepted them. They were yummy and perfect to end the meal. Our bills came up to $23.90, so it was $11.95 per person. I think that's a good deal. As of now, my reviews will forever change. 2 months ago my kidneys failed, and now I am dialysis. Dialysis requires a strict monitoring of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. This trio exist is many things. From now on my reviews will include how well a place fits within a dialysis based diet. So Chang has been a lifelong place for me. Started going there when I was 5. Started eating then when I was 7 (we had happy meals ebfore then) and I even adopted a mongolian grill by UW in Seattle. I have seen some bad mongolian grills (sadly, other Chang's) and some good ones. This one is definitely good. The service isn't too good, but the food quality and cleanliness are great. It also goes very well with my diet. Because it is just whatever I put on it, I can control which suaces and ingredients I use. This was our first time at Chang's and it was....meh... ok. It was kind of confusing as we had never been to this type of restaurant before. We go in and are seated and we are told how it works. They offer partial table service. First off they offer us soup and salad and beverages that are not a serve yourself part of the buffet. They offered us wraps which we declined . I didn't really understand what they meant by wraps. Do they mean egg rolls? When they brought the soup out it was unlike any other hot and sour soup I have ever had. It was more like salt and pepper soup. Not good I would recommend skipping this. I would highly recommend that they change this recipe. The salad was just a bowl of lettuce with some ranch dressing on it. Mr. Chad was not impressed. So how it works is one goes up to the'buffet' and picks up a bowl that only holds 11/2-2cups choose your meat. chicken, seafood, lamb,etc. Much to my surprise there is no rice on the table, there is some undercooked, hard to chew lo main. Next choose your veggies, tofu, sprouts,cilantro, hot peppers. Then finish it off with the various sauces in which to choose such as soy, lime,chili oil, ginger , garlic,etc. Then you take your bowl up to the round counter, take out a couple of dollars for tip so they will sauté your dinner right in front of you on this large hot stone. If you tell them your are a vegetarian they will water down and scrape the stone so your food is not cooked where meat was touching. The patrons watch as the food is cooked down to about 75% of what you had in the bowl to start with. After that they plate it up and hand it back to you. One looks down and thinks hmmmm.... this is only 3/4 cup of food. One has to do the process 2-3 times to get filled up. Makes one feel like a piggy to go up again and again. Not a tremendous value here folks. Oh you can get rice. You have to ask for it and they bring it out. It is not on the "buffet." I have to say I tried to put copious amounts of sauces on it, 1/4 cup garlic on it and the flavors just were not there. I had to get some sriracha that flavored it to my liking. Soft serve ice cream comes with the meal but it is not an all you care to eat situation. They bring that out to you. A few suggested changes: -Put rice on the buffet. Not just plain white rice. There should be other choices of rice. Also an option for veggie fried rice would be nice. -Offer serve yourself beverages,ice cream, soup and salad for value factor. -They should announce when they are closing the grill down for the night. This would prevent patrons from filling up their plate and take it over only to find out that the grill is closed. (last call announcement) The service was excellent despite the fact that they are always hiring as per their sign out front. They have an area that one can hold a small birthday party in behind the sauté counter. Unless you eat huge bowls of meat every time, this experience was not a tremendous value. A supper price of $29.00 for two people at a partial all you can eat situation. On top of the tipping the sauté masters, and the partial waitstaff, it is a better value to go to the grocery just down the street and pick up some precut veggies and shaved meat of your choice and sauté it yourself at home. meh..... read more

Very frustrated! Went in for an early dinner after a late lunch. I'd never been there before. Expected to take home left overs. As literary fans are aware, I will chow down on pretty much any animal that opens a door, a gate, or dares to romp in a meadow. And as longtime followers on Yelp may be aware, I'm also a connoisseur of the fishes. If it swims, I'm all over it. (This one time, while visiting a cute little seaside town named Amity Island, I met a real dish named Chrissie Watkins. Sadly, Peter Benchley thought the story would sell better with someone with less fur playing the lead...) Anyway, Chang's has huge piles of meat AND fish just waiting to be cooked on the huge iron griddle. They cook everything just long enough for the meats to reach medium well, though one of my complaints about this place is the way the cooks use the same spatulas for everyone's food around the griddle. No, I do not want my lamb to taste like shrimp and salmon, thankyouverymuch. Nor do I think that onion (or broccoli) should be cooked as briefly as thinly sliced meat; especially when I specifically have the veggies separated in their own bowl and ask that they get cooked longer. Dumping them all on the grill at the same time anyway just makes me want to chew on said cook. Minus one little Piggie for these affronts, the cheap rice and crepes, and the abomination masquerading as "hot and sour soup" (watery, meatless, and using black pepper. Sacrelige!). All in all, you can't go wrong when you build the meal yourself out of excellent ingredients. But be prepared for the side stuff to annoy you, or not, if you're less critical than I am. It's a three star place but I'm giving it 4 stars because it's one of the few places I can eat low carb til I'm full without spending too much money. (and the short grillmaster is a hoot to watch so bonus points for him) The service ain't exactly fine dining but hey, it's an Asian place. (just remember that folks - Asians aren't exactly the cloyingly sweet and friendly type. Not cuz they're mean spirited but because of the language barrier. They're just more reserved) You come in, they seat you, ask if you want soup, rice/flour wraps (all included in the buffet price) and you go pile meats, veggies onto a plate to get stirfried. I skip the noodles altogether because I'm usually low-carbing when I'm eating here. (ditto on the rice and wraps as well as the sundae that comes out at the end of the meal) The grilling station can get backlogged at peak times (lunch, mainly) but the wait isn't too bad. I just wish they had more sauce options than the lone sickly sweet bottles of teriyaki (I bring my own bottle of sauce in my purse. Yeah,I'm hardcore. LOL) For under $10, I can eat a gut busting amount of stirfried meats and veggies so I'm a happy camper. read more

It's a Chang's Mongolian Grill and you get just that. Pretty fast service except when it is busy, in which case things just become a cluster*. Could use some better upkeep of the food/meat area as it always seems to look like it just got hit with some sort of explosion, even when it isn't busy. The cooks are nice enough, and always cook the food well. The sriracha and teriyaki and other sauces are always filled. The tables are...clean enough. The waitresses are nice. Your typical Chang's Mongolian. You get choice of soups hot and sour or egg flower or salad. I had hot and sour which was ok but certainly not the best I've eaten. The buffet line; meats include beef, chicken, pork, salmon, shrimp, crab, white fish, and calamari. Regular noodles or spinach flavored. Vegetables include carrots, celery, onions , sprouts, green peppers, mushrooms , green onions, miniature corn , water chestnuts, and tomatoes. Sauces including soy , garlic, ginger, sesame, lime, hot and oyster. How good it turns out is really up to you. The friendly guys on the grill are fun to watch and they put on a show tossing empty bowls onto the stack, chopping and dicing the food, then serving it up on a plate and flying it to you. Drinks are reasonably priced. Had a fat tire amber for $3.50 but miller or bud are $3 a glass. Pretty good considering I'd normally pay $5-6. My waitress Joanna was great. Very attentive and friendly. I ate about 6pm and wasn't too busy but picked up by 7 pm. Still people didn't have to wait long to get their food cooked. Overall a good experience. read more

I remember this place from before I even moved here. Must have been 9 years ago when my Sister had her wedding reception here. I flew in for a week and this may be the one thing I remember, the most amazing all you can eat bbq with all the freshest vegetables and meats at such a bargain price for what you get. I'm giving our beverage order we're offered soup or salad, I asked for both but just given a salad; a very delicious Italian dressed salad. I walk up to the paying counter to request my soup and some chopsticks; you always have to ask for chopsticks twice, I think it's bc there's two of them or something. Anyways, I ask for soup and I'm told you really only get one or the other. It's an all-u-can-eat...really!? I fight for the soup on principle and I'm given the soup. That's just the kind of place this is. But here's the deal, the soup wasn't good; not compared to that salad. That must be why you can't get both; we'll eat the salad first, taste the soup, bleh, then go eat the bbq stuff. The veggies were fresh, I love being able to mix my own sauces and I always hang back before taking my food to be cooked so the flavors can blend just a little bit more. I've been to quite a few Mongolian BBQ restaurants in my day, and I always enjoyed going to Chang's. They didn't limit you to one bowl for your visit and even allowed multiple bowls per trip. Fresh, quality ingredients are always well stocked on their BBQ. In addition, rice, rice wraps, and ice cream are included with each visit. How much are you people eating? Yes it's all you can eat, and I'm usually stuffed after one time through the bar. IF you must you can go back twice but I think a third time would make my pancreas shoot out my pants. I must be used to the rythm and timing of Chang's because it only takes me a few minutes to zip through the line. The first time through at a lunch rush might take 15 minutes at the most. For the uninitiated, at Chang's you pick out items from a wok bar, like at New Season's and then make your own sauce choosing from various oils, vinager, sugar, salt, and peppers. There's a large selection of veggies and meat. Although sensitive veggitarians might not like the setup because food can mix on the community wok. Your food won't get confused for someone else's but your all veggie meal could end up with a slice of pork in it. There's two types of people in the world. Those who enjoy Chang's and those who don't. For the latter, I think one tip that makes or breaks the experience is the saucing up of the food prior to when it hits the grill. If you've never dined on the flat grill stir fry at Chang's you might make something tasteless. That's because you do NOT want to follow their sauce board. Unless of course you're one of those people who think spaghetti sauce is spicy. Then, by all means enjoy the recipe on the sauce board. Here's my typical blend for meat meals: All measurements are vaguely calculated using the ladles provided. And this assumes I have 2 bowls of food, one for veggies and one for meat. Anytime you see (2) it is one per bowl. Anytime you see (1) it's divided. 2-3 vinegar 2 Oyster Oil 1/2 Sesame Oil 1 Hot Oil (optional, depends on my grease intake) 4 Garlic 2 Ginger 3 Soy Sauce Extra dry peppers from the wok line. 1 Salt Water (if you like salty foods) or 1 Sugar Water (if you like sweeter terriyaki) IF you're on this side you might want to add pineapple and cooking sherry too. Back in the day Chang's used to only offer sweet plum sauce, so I would add hot oil every time to get the heat up. Now they have Siracha and a house made chili sauce at the end of the line. Once the food is cooked you can use these to spice your plate. Lately that has inspired me to use less hot oil or none at all because of the amount of grease that it imparts. One last tip is that I caution you on the ice cream served free at the end of your meal. It's just soft serve, and if you can resist it your stomach will thank you. Ice Cream and fried carbs and protiens do NOT mix. It'll cause your stomach to get confused and take much longer to digest the big meal you just ate. If I'm going back to work I never eat the ice cream because it kills my ethic. If I could make one suggestion to the owners of Chang's it would be to use some organic foods. Maybe they do, but the question always crosses my mind becasue there's no labeling or information to know where all these meats and veggies are coming from. Oh well, it's still good! :) read more

If you like meat, grab as many bowl as you want (that you can carry of course) and pile them up sky high. Fun to watch them cook your food in front of you too. I always go here for lunch. Too often if you ask me :) but this is all you can eat and come with a cup of soup and a cup of ice cream (you can opt out of soup and ice cream). price is pretty cheap and service is good. I've been to the one in beaverton and this one trumps the other. Cleaner and plenty of sunlight. Base starting price for an adult dinner here is $15. When I think about places like Mother's Bistro, where I can also get a $15 dinner, compared to here, this place is absolutely not worth the money. Is the food good? It's decent, but it is what *you* make it. (Though last time we went, the cooks dumped off the sauces we added to our bowls before they put it on the grill, then proceeded to add water to cook it so everything came out totally bland.) We've visited a handful of times in the last few years and every single time, they tried to charge my kid as an adult. We would bring this to the server or cashier's attention and again, every single time, it was met with discerning looks as if we were trying to pull a fast one. Beverages average (if memory serves) $3 each and do not include refills. The cooks and the waitstaff both expect tips. When all is said and done, you're looking at minimally $20 per person. I really enjoy having lunch at Chang's. So much, that my co-workers and I have gone a few times now. For starters, there is plenty of parking. The restaurant is also extremely clean, at least at lunch time. I love being able to customize my meal by choosing exactly what and how much of it that I want in my yakisoba Chang's offers a large selection of vegetables, as well as meats and fish in their buffet. There are also many different options for sauce. The only trick is knowing what sauces (ie sesame oil, oyster sauce, garlic sauce, sugar water etc) to add to your bowl. Too much of any one thing can ruin your meal. Luckily, if you screw up, you can go back to the buffet and recreate another dish. After loading up on ingredients, you take your bowl/bowls to the chef's who stir-fry them up on a giant grill. It's fun to watch because they often showboat with your food, flipping and chopping away - like they think they're Tom Cruise in Cocktail. My one suggestion would be a recipe board to instruct you on which combination of sauces work well together. There is something on the wall, but it pretty much just lists your sauce options and doesn't clearly instruct which ones and how much of each will make popular stir-fry flavors. Lastly, although beverages are an additional cost, the price of your meal includes an ice-cream sundae. I've never left this restaurant not completely stuffed. Although I don't like how overboard I go, I've gotten good at making a plate I thoroughly enjoy and can't help myself. read more

There were American people and the employees with them they would be so kind and when it came to our turn, no talk, silence at all. So unprofessional of these employees trying to be this way towards certain "groups". This review is kind of long, worth the read if you're considering going but the gist is, no one served us, waited a lot, no explanations, and then FOOD POISONING Went to a celebratory dinner here with my boyfriend at around seven o'clock. Dinner prime time. So me and my boyfriend were sat and then no one talked us, addressed us, told us how the restaurant worked for about ten minutes. Remember, we were one of three groups in the building. So she was obviously swamped. *eyeroll* and then when she did come over. She asked us for drinks, (Great, I actually was physically elated that we were finally getting asked for drinks) then she asked if we want wraps and we said no. And then she left. I had no idea what to do. Were we just supposed to go make a bowl? Would she come back to ask us for any meal options? No clue. There were like five employees standing at a counter in the front of the restaurant talking. Including our waitress and that area was blocked from us by a wall so we couldn't flag someone down and no one was walking by. So we waited another five minutes or so. And then my boyfriend just said he was done and we're going to fill bowls and if anyone tells us we've done it wrong then we'll leave because he was already done with the night. So we made our food. That went fine. The person actually cooking it was very attentive and nice. We sat down maybe five minutes later and the drinks we ordered hadn't been brought to the table. We waited a second but my boyfriend was done with the night and didn't care to wait anymore. He walked up to the front counter where they congregated and no one acknowledged him. He waited to make eye contact with our blond short haired waitress (who never gave us her name) and said "drinks?" I wasn't there but apparently she was apologetic and went and got them. Understandable. Me and my bf have both worked in food service for long periods before so we're not unreasonable. And then we got our drinks. And had our food. We ate for maybe half an hour. And no one checked in on us or filled our drinks. When our waitress finally came around to pick up our empty plates she asked if we wanted refills of our drinks. I wasn't sure so I just said yes and as she was about to walk away (I assume to get the drinks) she asked if we wanted dessert and we said no and then she seemed shocked and walked away. We weren't sure if she was still gonna bring drinks even though we weren't staying so we waited for her to either bring drinks or the check for like five minutes because we didn't want her to come back to an empty table. Again. No one walked by for a while. So we got up and went to the front counter to pay. Luckily one employee up there had seen what table we were at so she grabbed our check. And we had had terrible service but again, we had both worked in food service, so we were still gonna tip a little because being a waiter sucks. but they only had the option to tip 15% at the least which would've been about seven dollars. And we weren't about to tip seven extra dollars for that. So we didn't tip. Bad experience, right? Lesson learned, we won't go back. No need to yelp the bad experience, we just will never go again. Next day me and my boyfriend both wake up with degrees of food poisoning. My boyfriend throwing up, me just feeling really nauseous and icky. So not only was the service terrible, the food was TOXIC. My husband and I went on Father's Day. It may have been extra-busy because of that, but judging from some regulars' comments, maybe not. In any case, they tell you to take not too much, "you can always come back". Um. Given that it can take 30+ minutes to get through the line to get your food cooked, I'd suggest you ignore that advice. We arrived a couple hours before the end of lunch and managed to get through the line just twice (counting the pause between for eating which, admittedly, takes longer with a toddler on your lap). I did get enough, because on the second time through I was less conservative, and because I wasn't very hungry - but I wasn't real impressed with the "all you can eat buffet" coupled with "line that takes forever to go through". If you have a kid who needs a high chair (not booster seat) along, and who might be interested in what's on the table, ask them if they have a table that is actually the same height. I don't know if they do. Knowing our son was going to eat (we said so!) and that he needed a high chair, they gave us a booth on a slightly raised floor where the table was a good foot higher than his body seated in the high chair. So he spent most of the meal on our laps, which works but isn't the most convenient. The food is pretty good, though. If you have the patience for that sort of line, or are willing to take more and risk having more than you can eat by taking more at once (which they don't want you to do, but then, they're the ones who set up that oh-so-charming bottleneck), you probably won't run into the timing issue, and the high chairs aren't an issue with older kids who can sit in the booth/on a seat. read more

This place gets a five star review because I make a bitch'n sauce mixture leaving me with the most amazing plate of food ever. Wait... ever? OK maybe not ever but dannng this is good. Add to it the rice wraps and plum sauce.. OH BE STILL. Throw some moola to the grill guys, they are a happy lot and try to make you experience fun. Always good service, clean environment. read more

This place is awesome for family get togethers! When we go,there's at least 5 of us everytime and they are phenomenal! The staff is nice and the cooks are efficient. The place is clean and they are always making sure the food options are full and organized. Along with the grill, they offer soups, rice and wraps, and soft serve (with chocolate or caramel topping). how can you not love this place? great food and you get to watch them cook it for you. i go there about 2 times a month and everytime i cheat to much. the guy that cooks your food is very friendly and they always bring you drinks and wraps. so if you wanna eat alot of good food for a cheap price and watch a guy cook your food on a big grill than this is the place for you. read more
