Got tired of smash burgers, burritos, and sandwiches so wanted to try some Chinese food. Ratings were a little low but thought I would try it out despite some of the past reviews. I am glad I did, ordered orange chicken, black pepper chicken, fried rice and an order of crab wontons. The food is made to order and came out steaming hot. Food was fresh and had a ton of flavor. The restaurant is nothing fancy and looks like some painting is being done around the inside to spruce it up a bit. I didn't realize they sourced their water from the Himalayas and got their soda syrup from the vaults of Coca Colas special lab flown in. Why else are they charging 5.45 for a small fountain drink with no refills? We were already down 20 bucks before the food even got here. It's a nostalgic place so I come because I remember it being good when I was a kid. But, I think the rosey glasses are coming off when it comes to the mid food and no refill sodas sweetened with the rarest of sugar canes from a private island with year round sun and pure guano fertilizer. read more

Chans has always been a favorite of mine for 20+ years. The food is always served piping hot, and the portions are enormous. I've managed to work my way through most of their menu, and it's hard to single out a favorite. They now have sesame balls for dessert. If you've never had these, by all means try them. Oh my! Chan's is awesome! My daughter Summerlyn is super into Chinese language and culture lately, and has become acquainted with a lot of Chinese people and learned to spot really great Chinese restaurants. So, while we're staying in Bend, she wanted to try Chan's. I am so glad she did because this was AMAZING. The prices were really good, especially given the amount of food you get! The food was delicious and the portions just right. Also, the waitresses were perfect. I was disappointed that the lady waitress brought my plate and a noodle was hanging over the plate and with her finger she flipped it on the plate. Im not one to make a public seen but she should have apologized and asked to get a new plate or asked me was it okay that she did that. I didn't want to leave a tip but I left a small one. read more

2nd visit. Food is good and there are many options. Servers both times were pleasant. No complaints there. My biggest issue was the seats and table were not clean and I didn't notice since the dark sauce was same color as table and seats. My workbook I brought to go over ended up having soy sauce on covers from previous diner. My white pants also had dark sauce on the back from the seats not being wiped off. All can be cleaned but I fell like restaurants should do a better job wiping down from guest to guest. read more

My friends and I came to Chan's in Bend from Sisters during the rodeo because we heard so much about the place and it was supposed to be really good. We were not disappointed with the food. It was actually great. I felt so bad for my Uncle. He paid with a credit card, but then suddenly this short lady ran up to our table loudly announcing "your card declined!" She said it loudly at least three times. It was humiliating. He calmly handed her his other credit card. I guess that worked out just fine because she didn't come running back up to our table yelling. Nobody deserves that. We weren't going to run out on our bill. After a day of successful door dashing in Bend, I needed something to eat and was feeling Chinese food, so I chose Chan's since it was close to my location. I went into the clean, dimly lit, welcoming establishment. I was greeted by a cheerful Asian woman who made a few suggestions based on the specials of the day, and perused the menu, settling for the combo with the Sweet and Sour Pork, Chicken Subgum Chow Mein, the Pork Fried Rice, and substituted the Fried Shrimp for an egg roll due to seafood allergies for an order to go. I don't like to photograph to-go orders because I don't feel that it demonstrates the best possible presentation of the food, so rarely do I do this. Anyway, I live in the Deep South, and we have some amazing Chinese places down there, and they're consistently the best places to get food from, which sort of tempers my expectations for Chinese food everywhere. Such was not the case with Chan's. This food was literally a hot mess. It had a good taste for the most part, the egg roll was absolutely delicious, crisp and tasty, and that was the extent of my amazement. The Sweet and Sour Pork was utterly tasteless, and the sauce itself was just middle of the road, neither being really sweet or really sour. The Chicken Subgum Chow Mein was basically not Chicken Subgum Chow Mein at all. Where was the celery? Where were the water chestnuts? Instead, there was zucchini and something that resembled onions, limp and tasteless. The Chicken was tender, well seasoned and flavorful, which ended up being the best thing about it. The Pork Fried Rice was greasy and messy, I didn't enjoy it in the least. The rice was somewhat undercooked with that crunchy consistency it shouldn't have ever had. And then the fortune cookie was somehow stale, with a fortune that read "Sell your idea - they are totally acceptable" Perhaps if they had gotten this fortune before selling their idea, and put a little more effort into it, then the execution may have been better than what I received. read more

Was very disappointed in the takeout from yesterday, I ordered House Chow Fun which is a wide rice noodle dish, it has beef, chicken, & some pork with a spare amount of scallions mixed in. The issues were that the rice noodles were most likely prepared a few days before and not reintroduced to boiling water to rehydrate and warm them back up before the wok, the noodles stuck together in clumps, the beef, chicken & pork was sparse and under seasoned. It just wasn't something I would have been proud to serve. It had been 4 years since the last time we had been there and this experience was the reason why. IMO the food quality has regressed since Lap Chan sold the business. read more

We went to Friday night around 6pm. We got a table right away. Place is very clean this is very important. We ordered black pepper pork and Szechuan beef. Comes with soup and rice. We chose hot and sour soup and it was delicious. Both dish are great, lot of protein and huge portions. We really like they have a gluten free and no sugar options. Tastes even better! The ambiance is great. Love how a restaurant should feel. Service was subpar. Our waiter on two occasions did not understand our questions. We asked if there is anything similar to a sweet and pungent shrimp (thinking Panda Inn from Pasadena, CA - a high-end Chinese restaurant). He responded with a snarky response, "We have sweet and sour pork" then immediately left without attempting to be more helpful. As if we don't know that by reading the menu. The second time, my husband accidentally spilled his drink on his plate. We asked him for a new plate because half of his drink spilled on his plate. He didn't come back until nearly 10 minutes later to replace it, and that was after we had to bring it up to someone who is either the owner or manager in a blue sweater. Everything is overly sweet. All the dishes come plain, just meat including the sweet and sour pork which tends to come with bell peppers and pineapple chunks. While the flavor was tasty it was just pure sugar all around including our alcoholic drinks. The chili oil is literally that, spicey oil. No pepper flakes. This is the second Chinese food restaurant since moving here. I'm willing to come back and try some of their none sweet dishes since it is better than another restaurant around 15 miles from here that had food with frozen aroma flavor in their food - not edible. Being that it is Chinese Lunar Year we knew we had to find a chinese restaurant to eat at for prosperity and good fortune for the new lunar year. Glad we found Chan's - the dishes were delicious and generous in portion. Each order was comparable to 2 orders from the chinese restaurants back home in Hawaii so great value! In fact, we had to take left overs which turned out to be great because that represents Abundance which is good luck and good fortune. This is my favorite Chinese in Bend. Actually, it's one of my favorites in the great northwest. On the outside, it doesn't look like much. You might say to yourself "ok its Chinese, so I'm not sure what to expect." Don't worry. The customer next door just paid 120k for a new Porsche, and he did Kung Pao Something and he is very happy. Maybe we got lucky, but if it's luck, it's luck many times in a row. The waiter was very attentive, filling my water glass 3 times. He was casual, and you can tell he likes his job. And he smiled because he knew my Kung Pao dish would make me sweat! I had the #3 Kung Pao chicken combo with sweet n sour chicken, egg rolls and fried rice for $17. Not only was it good, but Chans dinner plates are Paul Bunion style. You don't have to ask...your waiter will bring you boxes for the next 3 dinners. If your Kung Pao is too spicy, mix some rice in to dilute the spiciness. When you eat it the next day and the 3rd day....this stuff tastes just as good to me. We have been stopping here for years, both dine in and take out. We are used to getting good food no matter what we order. But this week was very different. We ordered take out and were highly disappointed in the quality. We ordered Orange chicken, Beef Lo Mein, and potstickers. The chicken was overcooked and dry, I had to tear it apart as it wouldn't cut easily. The beef was ok but the dish was very short on vegetables. The pot stickers were so bulky and doughy they weren't edible. We took out the filling and threw away the rest. All together it was very short on the flavor we had come to expect. I've wanted to try this place for a while, after noticing it was fairly busy a few different nights as I drove by. When a co-worker (who had also never tried it) wanted to get it for lunch, 4 of us took off to try it out. Although the pace looks a little dated on the outside, the inside looks like it has been through a renovation more recently. The space inside was nicely decorated, spacious, and definitely surpassed my expectations! We were seated quickly and our server was at the table before we knew it to deliver waters for the table. In addition to the atmosphere inside, I was surprised by how many people were there for lunch on a random Weds. When we ordered, we were surprised when the server asked us which soup we would like because the menu didn't mention soup with the lunch entrees. We also ordered some crab rangoons as a starter. The rangoons came out quickly and were fairly generic. Like most places, I would always like a little more filling, but the flavor was good. The dipping sauce (sweet n sour? duck sauce?) was ok, but a little sweet. I ordered the Hot and Sour soup. Again, like a lot of places, they're a little heavy handed with the cornstarch, yielding the soup a little goopy for my tastes. It was also missing the biting spice from white pepper I like in a good soup. When the portions came out, they were huge! Especially for lunch portions (see the pics). Along with each dish was another surprise - spring rolls! Again, not mentioned on the menu. They were pretty standard, with the same dipping sauce as the rangoons. I ordered the Mongolian Chicken, not knowing exactly what to expect. What I got was a pretty tasty combo of slightly sweet and spicy chicken, onions, and water chestnuts with a side of broccoli and pork fried rice. I ate bites of chicken and broccoli until the broccoli was gone and still had a mound of chicken and rice left! My leftovers completely filled a to-go box. I made two more meals at home out of it later in the week! I had some bites of my co-workers' food and they were all pretty good. I think I may have to go with the Sesame chicken next time. We were in town for an expo at the fairgrounds. Food was abundant and our plates were heaping when they arrived to the table. Please note NO refills of your beverage. There is no way to wash that amount down on one beverage! And, it costs more for the beverage than I've ever paid! The food was mediocre and just warm.
