The hot and sour soup is very good though I'd almost call it hot, sweet, and sour as it's got more sweetness (and maybe a touch more hotness) than I'm used to in the San Francisco area. The potsickers were great. The Cantonese chicken and green beans was superb. I love the structure of the menu -- a few different ways of preparing things x a few different proteins (or lead vegetables). Very simple and clear and avoids the "I love the black beans sauce but didn't want chicken" problem that sometimes happens at Chinese restaurants. On the COVID front, they could do a little better. When I went there it was too crowded in the lobby because people were waiting for tables and/or food. Particularly when they're waiting for food, it should be one person per order and they should use the empty space in the bar to have people wait instead of crowding into the hallway. I was driving a long, long way and suddenly felt like I could use a break. So I opened up Yelp and found Chan's Chinese Restaurant just off Highway 97 in Bend, Oregon. Operationally - they have plenty of parking out front and follow strict Covid-19 safety procedures from the front door to the tables and throughout the restaurant. Menu-wise there are a ton of choices that are clearly explained for American customers who may not be too familiar with the various regional types of food they offer - Sichuanese, Hunanese, Cantonese, Beijing-ese, and so on. I ordered "Salt & Pepper Fish" which is a variation on the Salt & Pepper Prawns that I often get in a seafood town of China. The fish was delicious and the spices just right. Not too powerful in case people are worried about heat; but savory and a bit of heat together just as it should be. This was one of the more unique items on the menu which appealed to me as I lived for some years in China and miss the authentic local cuisines that are available throughout each particular place in the country. We travel through Bend about 10 time a year. Its sunday and China Doll was closed, so we thought we would try Chan's Chinese Restaurant in Bend for take out. We ordered a la cart, an order of low mein, an order of house Fried rice and a order of mixed vegetables. It was 53.00 and change. Seemed expensive, but with food you usually get what you pay for. This is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Fried rice with no soy sauce, or flavor and a supposedly fried general chicken missing the fried part ans the general sauce part. Its just a sour cornstarch water. It has hunks of obviously frozen bagged carrot. Ans thats it. I cant believe I ever though if giving them a second chance. My $90 regret. Also way to expensive! Food is delicious always! It has authentic and American style food for all types of palates. I'm not a big fan of "American Chinese" like Panda Express, but others I eat with say that it is really good. For the more authentic Chinese food it's great as well. I see claims of people not liking the food because the pan fried noodles being soggy and the soup being only warm - but those are actually supposed to be served that way. Not sure what Chinese food these people have had, but Chan's is very good for both styles the US tends to serve. read more

My wife and I visited Chan's today, and it was a bit disappointing. It started off rough when told that an item wasn't available, but the reason made it a bit understandable, so no points lost. However, after the tea and soup, the rest of the food was not hot and in fact the egg rolls were undercooked to the point of limpness. The sweet and sour pork was fine, but the chicken subgum was under seasoned except for an abundance of garlic. Also, it wasn't hot. Finally, the service was a bit rushed and over solicitous. We don't eat slowly, but our main dish was delivered before we had half-finished our soup. Also, before we were half finished eating, to go boxes were brought and shortly thereafter the bill. We asked for neither. None of this was because they were busy. The parking lot was less than a quarter full and the dining room seemed even less full. read more

- Nice space, very comfortable booths and there are plenty of them. - Small bar area while you wait for takeout. - Service is good, maybe a bit snarky (which I like). - Alcohol selection is adequate. They do have local craft beers on draft but not many. - Chopsticks provided on request. I keep forgetting to bring mine from home. Food: - All entrees came out with large servings. We ordered five for the four of us and that was way too much food and barely fit on the table. Good for leftovers, though. - Entrees labeled as 'house' come with all the meats, or so said the server. I don't do shrimp so I didn't try any of them. - Chan's menu includes Chinese dishes from various provinces. How well they pull that off is a matter of debate but for the Szechuan dishes, there is a lack of the signature spices normally associated with food from that province, particularly Sichaun peppercorns which provide a 'hot and numbing' effect. I'd really like to find a restaurant in Bend that employs that spice. - Szechuan chicken is solid. It's billed as spicy and it does have a small kick. I asked for extra spicy but the server snickered at me and said it already was spicy. Bend does not do spicy. This dish is good, though. - Spicy tofu with vegetables. Also solid but as with the Szechuan chicken, you're left wanting for more heat. - Dry-fried green beans. Tasty and maybe the best I've had in Bend but falls short of that you'll find in better Chinese restaurants (not in Bend). - Orange chicken is well prepared. Good choice if you like sweet sauce. - Vegetable lo mein is pretty standard. I like lo mein so I'd definitely order this again. - Hot and sour soup is a little weak. Needs more 'sour' and less thickener. No spice condiments on the table. I forgot to ask - maybe they have hot chile oil or something available. Prices are in line with Bend, maybe a bit high. All-in-all, although the dish-to-dish comparisons vary wildly, I'd rate Chan's on par with Szechuan Restaurant and above Chi's, although I imagine many here would disagree with the latter. read more

This is the second time for us coming to Chan's and so far it hasn't disappointed us at all. The prices is low cost and the food is so yummy! Every entree comes with rice and soup. The soup I'm not a fan of but the food is really good. The tea is okay but did I mention the food is good. The portions are so large and so we always have leftovers which I don't mind eating the next day. Check it out you won't be disappointed at all. We had the Mongolian beef which was a bit spicy which we love & the lemon chicken was breaded lightly which is great and made with chicken breast, the sauce wasn't that sweet which is nice. read more

We ordered about 5 things from this place and only like 1 or 2 of the dishes. The pepper chicken was no joke, it literally looks like it's been rolling in black seeds or ants because it has so much pepper loaded in there. The chow fun was almost fully white with brown color on the outer borders of the noodle but the whole thing should be brown from soy sauce so that definitely lacked soy flavor. The hot and sour soup had celery and I think carrots in it which is not traditional. The Mushu pork was the best item they had because it was well seasoned and seemed pretty normal. Nice friendly staff and giant portions here were the only takeaways really. read more

I hate giving a two star review because we usually have a great experience eating here. However, the last time we ate there I asked if there was zucchini in a new dish I was trying. They said yes so I asked if It could be left out. If not I would have gotten a dish I've already had. Note here: I am allergic to zucchini so I'm careful. I got my dish minus the zucchini but there was, I kid you not, a huge mound of diced carrots on this. Like a big can had been dumped on top. Honestly, it was unappetizing and I didn't eat it. I took it home for my son to have. This has never happened to me before at Chan's and I'm left wondering why this was done. I never mind a smaller portion when the zucchini is left out. We're going back today for dinner so I really hope this was a one off mistake. They are incredibly nice here and I'd hate to stop going. read more

This place was really good about a year ago. Not amazing or anything, but better than most Chinese American takeout in town. Today some of the chicken pieces in my chicken fried rice were raw. Never tasted raw chicken before today, but boy is it something you notice right away. Really gross. Hoping I will not be vomiting soon. Don't need salmonella during this covid crisis. I would never tell you this is the best Chinese food I've ever had, and some things are way better than others. It is one of the better options here in Bend for Chinese food.
