I had wanted to try this restaurant for almost a year. Finally went tonight and was sadly disappointed. Now, keep in mind, the restaurant was busy and even had a small wait, so clearly locals like it more than I did. Maybe I ordered the two or three worst dishes. I don't know. It is a small place with only maybe 12 tables. Decor is nice. The manager was a friendly woman. There were two other waiters. Somehow, despite the small space, the waiters seemed frazzled. They seemed to be in the kitchen a lot instead of in the dining room. Not sure why. The sign says parking in back, and we did park in the lot in back. I wonder though if it is for residents of the apartment building, as when we left the gate was closed down. I hoped it would open when we drove toward it. Luckily didn't have to find out, as a car was coming in with a remote just as we were pulling out. So, figure out if this is their lot before you park there. I'm not sure. So, service was scattered and slow even for a small place. On to the food. Appetizers were the highlight for me. The shrimp egg rolls, which have glass noodles and shrimp and vegetables in a deep fried skin were excellent with the standard sweet Thai dipping sauce. I had ordered the chicken saté well done, but the waitress/manager didn't make note when she wrote it down and the chicken was not as well done as I like. Still, it wasn't pink (like I find at some places). However, there was a liquid trailing out of the chicken which I've never seen on a saté plate in all my life. Like blood that drains from meat this is not allowed to rest after cooking. Still, I didn't get sick, so I don't know what it was. I tried a small cup of the Tom Kha soup, which two people could share if they wanted. I ordered the chicken but was served shrimp and charged for shrimp, which is a dollar or so more. The problem was the soup is way too sour. I expect this soup to be spicy and coconut milky. It was just milky and super sour. Didn't really like it. Mains were The Sexy Sassy Sea Bass for the lady (and she said it was good) - looked fried with sauce on top. I had the spicy fried rice with beef and the Hot Basil Spicy Chow Mein (which is served with beef, chicken, and shrimp). Both dishes were not to my liking. They both had a bizarre sweet taste to them almost like sugary ketchup was in the sauce. It was really odd. The beef in the rice was over tenderized and chewy. The chicken and beef in the chow mein (which was even sweeter than the rice overall), was okay. The shrimp, however, were really fishy and contrasted poorly with that yucky sweet taste. If I did go back, I'd have to try something else, but I'm not running back. read more

I placed an order through Yelp and fulfilled by Grubhub of three items. I ordered a papaya pok pok salad and added shrimp for a few dollars more. After I picked up my food and brought it home to feed my family, I realized that they had forgotten to give me shrimp. I called the restaurant and they said that I could come back and get another one or call GrubHub for a refund. I was already sitting down with my family so I decided to give GrubHub a call. GrubHub told me to go back to the restaurant. All they could do for me is give me a $2 refund for the missing shrimp. Grubhub blamed me for not looking at my order before I left the restaurant. I wasn't able to because everything was sealed up due to Covid. I blame the restaurant for not taking enough care to check the order before sealing the bag. Chao Doi Thai is one of our go-to thai take out spots. So convenient to order ahead and pick up in 5 seconds. PARKING: Street or underground. FOOD: -Pad See Ew: When you order extra spicy here, they REALLY give it to you. I've had the beef, tofu, and chicken, but I personally love the tofu the best. Noodles have a nice bite to them, and the sauce is on point. Next time I'll venture out and try a curry, but I always measure a place based on their pad see ew - and CDT's is solid! read more

This is a cute little local restaurant that provides great, consistent comfort food. We love their pad thai, yellow and red curry. Their egg rolls are good too. The food prep does take time though so allow time. The have a nice sitting area, so order a Thai tea and appetizer to enjoy while your food is prepared. read more

I did not receive my complete order. When I contacted the restaurant they told me I had to Call GrubHub. GrubHub never answers when you give them a call. The restaurant did not offer to give me my drink or to give me my money back because that is GrubHub support issue. It was not a helpful solution. My husband and I had been coming to this restaurant as regulars for the past 4 years.The last 5 months we've been coming on and off because the quality had severely declined. Last week was the last time we will have ever ordered this food again. We'd ordered our usual and we were hopeful that it would be good since we like to support. When we got the food it wasn't even edible, I called immediately to let this restaurant know that the food was black in color and the tofu tasted undercooked & the other dish had so much grease we couldn't eat it either. The staff let me know the manager wasn't in and I would receive a call back. I never got a call back and they never did right by the situation. This is one of the only thai restaurants I know where you can ask them to make the food hot and they actually do so. Just by circumstance I happen to be able to speak the language and I must say this gives the advantage of being able to convince the staff that you can actually tolerate hot food. Many people claim they can and then can't eat it , so the staff of restaurants is naturally always a bit skeptical. So I cannot guarantee an authentic experience for all but for those who know the culture and the food and even if those who don't, if you work with the staff here I'm sure you can get the level of heat that is appropriate. the curries are 1st rate and of such a refined quality that they match the finest restaurants in Bangkok. They have a multi grain Brown rice which is very enjoyable for those who like that rice , and those are the only dishes I have tried--the fried rice made with Brown rice and both the green and red curries which were superb. But the service and the vibe and the décor and the cleanliness are excellent, and the portions are generous so that a take home portion and even an a la cart portion in the restaurant will provide more than one meal. I am finally knocking of a star. The food quality is good still, but I have had so many orders, probably 2/3 of my orders for the last year, where I order and pay for delivery, with these obnoxious fees on top of service charges, etc, only to have to get in my car and rush to the restaurant to pick up something they forgot to include in my order or whatever. It's beyond frustrating, and I have only stuck with them so far because they are careful with our gluten allergy issues. That has meant a lot, but I'm done. I give up. Had it been 7 years since we ate here? Unbeknownst to me, I ordered the same dish as before - Spicy Thai Noodles, but with tofu. Hubby tried the Green Curry Fried Rice which came with seafood. Both tasted pretty good. The food took a while to come out, but it was piping hot. I had Thai Iced Tea which was too sweet, and I like them sweet. Even though the restaurant was not busy, there was basically no service until the end when we got our water refilled. Great taste in all the dishes I've had so far. I've tried their pad see ew, pad thai, crab rice, tom kah and tom yum soup. All have been surprisingly good! Used to live close to this place and actually frequent it often. Prices are good and so is the food, so give it a try. For such a small restaurant it packs flavor. read more

Everybody has a default Thai restaurant, and this is mine. Located on my route home from work, I find myself coming here almost on a weekly basis. I usually order the yellow curry with tofu, or eggplant with tofu, bbq pork, or fried tofu. I've also had their Mongolian beef as well as their chicken satay sticks and tom kha soup. The portions are generous, sometimes enough for 2 meals if you eat the entrees with rice. The prices are decent, hovering around 10-15 dollars on most things. I've never really sat down for a full meal so I can't attest to the service. Now you may wonder, why not 5 stars? Well, as good as their food is, it's just that-- good, not great. I dunno what it is... it just lacks that extra oomph to truly claim greatness. But based of convenience and price, good is good enough for me. Oh, but one thing they've done right is the Thai tea. This is for delivery. Thai beef salad was my favorite. I for some reason couldn't order steamed rice, but they sent one with my order. They don't skimp on the protein which was appreciated. The fried shrimp wasn't great, but the egg rolls were better than most places. Good Thai in Pasadena for a reasonable price, fast delivery, and they didn't screw up the order. My order was missing the bean sprouts and peanuts from most pad Thai dishes. I am sure the food is much better in the restaurant and delivery isn't always the best. The food here is always on point. Everything that we order is so simple but so yummy at the same time. It's definitely they go to spot before T pumps which is basically the only reason were ever here lol. Our usual is the pad Thai. We have also gotten pineapple fried rice and their fried tofu in the past. All of which are very good. Why only four stars? Glad you asked. Maybe I've just been spoiled with getting excellent customer service from other restaurants or maybe it's because I have high standards because I was once in the restaurant industry myself, but their customer service can be a little bit more consistent. When we went here she was amazing and take care of us and was really nice. The following times of been whatever. Nonetheless the food is good so go here. The food is pretty good here. Ordering through yelp/grubhub has been a terrible experience though on top of how the restaurant treats their customer. I attempted to place an order through grubhub which kept saying error on the transaction. So I did the next normal thing when that doesn't work, I called to place an order. As I was driving to pick my order up I got a very rude call about how I placed multiple orders. The person on the other end wouldn't let me talk and just yelled over me. Somewhat frustrated at this, especially since why would I be placing multiple of the same order minutes apart? Probably wouldn't go here again and I do like the food and order quite frequently. But is this really the way to treat any customer? Imagine this was my first time ordering. To top this off, it became me complaining to grubhub's customer support that I don't think its legal to charge my credit card without giving me some form of authorization and confirmation. Great, grubhub knows of the order, the restaurant knows of the order, but I did not. Wasted an hour of my time with grubhub customer support and Chao Doi Thai loses repeat business. read more

Review is only for takeout order. Haven't yet tasted the food but irked by the experience. Ordered over $65 of food and the older lady won't even pack 2 jalapeños. She also forgot to put in an order for a drink for the kids and said it'll take additional 5 minutes to make. No customers inside and looked completely dead so 5 minutes for a drink?? She also neglected to pack cold food separately from the hot. It's pretty basic stuff. Didn't seem to care that she's losing business or about retaining customer base. This is the first time back since years ago but this place has gone down. Hopefully food tastes okay. Edited to add: just went to their menu and found out that the lady also lied. I opted not to add protein to a dish because she said they are ALL additional cost. However online ordering and menu shows that there are couple of proteins you can choose without the added cost. My usual Thai place was closed (local Pasadena favorite, if you're from around here you already know which one I'm talking about) and decided to try here and now THIS is my favorite Thai place in Pasadena! Their egg rolls are so crispy and not mushy on the inside (idk, I've had lots of egg rolls that are crunchy on the outside but mushy on the inside), so that immediately made me happy, I'm very picky about egg rolls. Their chicken satay is tender and you can taste the coconut but it's not overpowering. Their pad Thai is good as is their pad see ew, and I love their Thai iced tea. This place also has a great selection of drinks. Usually Thai places really only have Thai iced tea and Thai ice coffee, but this place offers other milk teas! Went here on a whim because we were craving Thai food late night on a Sunday. The food was mediocre. Nothing that i would recommend as a "good Thai food spot". We ordered: pad Thai, yellow curry, chicken satay, crab wonton langoon & some meat balls on a stick which was recommended on the menu. Out of all the dishes the pad Thai won the best dish of our dinner vote. ( we ended up getting two orders of pad Thai Togo for our lunches ) The staff was very friendly and attentive. Just be sure to check your receipt because with our party of 2 adults and 5 kids, gratuity was already added. When I received my cash change the receipt wasn't included and I almost doubled my tip if I hadn't asked for the receipt back to calculate tip. Also, if you come late night, the parking garage does close and every entrance becomes locked. You have to ask the Thai food place to allow you entrance into the garage, which they were more than happy to do. More like 3.5, but I'll round up. The first time I tried this place, it was for carry out. The second time, I went inside. Both times, I tried the pad thai -- I've had better, but it's decent. I wish there were more egg pieces in it, and I can say the same about the pineapple fried rice. Also, I feel like the dishes are a little on the soggy side. I also tried their appetizer sampler that came with fried egg roll skins, two types of crab-rangoon-type triangles (deep and pan friend), egg rolls, and a shrimp wrapped in bacon wrapped in noodle. However, the flavors are good and food is quick. When you go inside, you see Thai folks dining and running the place, so that's a good sign. read more
