I have been dining at this restaurant for years. It has great food and reasonable prices. They just remodeled it, so it's very modern inside. The service is always great.

This is a long one but well deserved, I think. I have to give this family run restaurant props. We got off to a rocky start but I am a new fan! If you like shrimp, this place should be on your list. The shrimp is fresh, well prepared and plentiful. This round the restaurant kindly wanted to right the wrong of the other night's delivery. I appreciate that they also took up lousy Grub Hub's mistakes also. They didn't have to do this, honestly. But I'm glad they did because they gave me a chance to really try their food. This was delivered by the owner herself, which was flattering. She brought not only a great meal, but a genuine apology for my daughter, which really made me feel good. My daughter was very fussy about the previous experience. I was glad to try a few delicious items and since I didn't order, it was a surprise, which was fun. I feel like they were showcasing their talents and allowing me to appreciate their strengths. Fresh, HOT and quick, yet not fast food. Great fresh vegetables and ingredients. Not greasy or oily, flavorful but still mellow enough since I haven't been feeling 100 percent. I'm thankful that I don't have to make any food today and even have some nice leftovers to enjoy later. All the food reheats well, which is a big plus for me because I tend to eat a lot of small meals instead of big, filling meals. I also prefer healthy food and take out is rarely "healthy" for the most part. It's nice to have options that can please a crowd, fun food mixed with healthy options for me. Something for everyone. Bonus! Ok. Back to the food. That's the real deal. We got shrimp with mixed veggies, shrimp egg rolls, egg flower soup and fried shrimp. All were fresh, piping hot and really good. But the star is the simple shrimp with vegetables. Perfectly cooked again. We will definitely be back. We need a little authentic spot nearby!

We've driven by this restaurant for years and never stopped in until recently, because A) We tend to eat dinner very late at night... they close at 9 PM here and B) We thought this place would be just another Panda Express clone. Boy were we wrong. We are also very glad that Egg Roll Express and the other businesses on this block survived the Eaton Fire, otherwise we wouldn't have a chance to come in and try the food. We were expecting it to be very hole-in-the-wall, but the interior looks very modern and clean. Even the restrooms (when we went) seemed cleaner than Marie Kondo's house. The food overall seemed to be somewhere between American-Chinese style and authentic Chinese, though leaning more towards authentic. We never visited in its previous iterations, so can't make a judgment of how the food used to be. Here's a low-down of what we tried: Vegetable egg rolls: Despite being named "Egg Roll Express", we found it hilarious that there was only one kind of egg roll on the menu. These were pretty nice and crispy and very strong cabbage flavor, but a bit on the small side. Served with a fruity sweet dipping sauce that was mostly sweet and not sour. West lake beef soup: Very pleasant and delicious with the right amount of white pepper and cilantro, though less gluppy in viscosity than what we're used to. Still respectable in our book. Sauteed green beans: Cooked just the right amount, crispy and full of garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil. Excellent, on part with that of Tasty Choice in San Gabriel. Taiwan rice noodles: Ordered this without bell peppers due to my girlfriend's allergy. Very flavorful and nice noodle texture, and the shrimp and char siu pork were tasty. Has a hint of sesame oil flavor. Nice amount of veggies in here too. Pineapple shrimp fried rice: I think they need to improve more on their rice dishes. Given that this is fried rice, the rice needed to be drier; it almost seemed as if they were using fresh rice to make this instead of day-old rice. Rice could definitely use more wok hay too. While the shrimp was great and so were the veggies in the fried rice, the pineapple certainly didn't taste optimal or very perky. Maybe they just got a mediocre batch of fruit, but we were hoping for better. Thai iced tea: Could be better, tasted like it came from an off-the-shelf mix that you could buy in the store. I guess drinks are not their strong point. But their iced water was great. They even have a station near the ordering counter with complimentary iced water, if you are waiting for your order. So far, soup, veggie and rice noodle dishes are excellent, while their fried rice could be better. Total damage came out to $68 before tips, which is pretty good considering that the portions are pretty generous. If you are craving a certain item, I would call beforehand... we wanted to try the steamed fish fillet as well as their sesame pockets, but they were out of them for the day. Oh well, next time then. Staff was very nice and friendly and there was no communication barrier at all when it came to explaining allergies; they seem fluent in both Mandarin and English. We were so glad that they could exclude certain ingredients from dishes to accommodate my girlfriend's allergies. Also really appreciated that they would come around every now and then to check if we needed anything. We did find it hilarious that we were offered a fork and spoon for utensils, and we had to ask for chopsticks. I guess demographically speaking, this area doesn't have a whole lot of Asian folks. Maybe we're just too SGV-spoiled. It seems to be a husband-and-wife operation with one or two chefs in the back, but our food came out within less than 10 minutes of ordering and nice and hot as well. And finally, mad props to the owners for investing in excellent ambiance here. They have Chinese pop music playing in the background, but it is at a reasonable volume, and unlike many modern restaurants, there is not much in the way of echo and you could actually hear yourself think and have a conversation with the people at your table here. We suspect they might have some soundproofing material in the walls. That's a big plus in our book. Will definitely be back to try their other dishes. First impressions are very important, and overall, our first visit here was pretty solid. Only downside is that they're not open super-late. Two lessons here: Don't judge a book by its cover, and certainly don't brush off the mom-and-pop businesses. This part of Pasadena and Altadena could certainly use more love and patronage.

    Garlic chicken lunch special

What can I say! Egg Roll Express and its new owners are creating magic with these incredible dishes. My favorite is the garlic chicken lunch special. The soup, rice, veggies, and chicken are so tasty, I can't believe it's only $10.99 I'm telling you folks, I've been eating Chinese food for decades, and this place ranks way up there. Friendly staff make you feel welcome and at home.

I recently dined at Egg Roll Express and had a wonderful experience. The menu offered a great variety of traditional Chinese dishes, and the food was absolutely delicious. We started with the crispy egg rolls, which were perfectly deep fried and full of flavor. For the main course, I highly recommend the kung pao chicken it was flavorful and perfectly balanced with a kick of spice. The service was excellent, with the staff being attentive and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed.the restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, that made it a pleasant place to relax and enjoy our meal. Overall, a fantastic dining experience, and I will definitely be back!

This restaurant sounds like a Chinese Takeout but it's not. It's a family ownedl Chinese restaurant. My friends and I decided to have lunch here and all the food was top notch. My favorite dish of all time is the Eggplant and they nailed the Szechuan Eggplant and Tofu dish! Server was patient and friendly and I had a great experience overall.

It's a comfortable spot with padded banquettes or chairs at the tables, which feature chrome frames and (very good-looking) faux marble tops; along with white walls and light-colored wood accents, the owners have created a clean, simple, welcoming environment. The mood is jostled even further into a specific vibe of calmness with the carefully curated music being played: bossa nova covers of pop hits from bygone days (The Bee Gees' "More Than A Woman" and the Bee Gees'-written Streisand hit, "A Woman In Love" being examples), but it all works. The menu offers a varied selection of dishes from several Asian cultures, from Chinese Beef Rolls to Japanese noodles and soups to Korean Beef over rice. It's not a huge menu, but there's definitely enough there for everyone to find something interesting to eat. The food is all cooked in view of the customers by a staff of chefs working in a sparkling clean kitchen enclosed by windows, and the staff is uniformly friendly despite juggling a lunchtime crowd at the tables plus quite a lot of to-go orders. I tried 2 really enjoyable and satisfying dishes. Beef Rolls featured thinly sliced brisket rolled inside crispy fried crepes with scallion, cilantro and a touch of Hoisin sauce. The brisket had a mild but distinctive flavor that spoke of careful preparation, while the slightly astringent pop from the onions and herbs was a nice foil for the inherent fattiness of the fried crepes. The Hoisin sauce was very subtly deployed, lending tasty support without overwhelming everything else. I added some of the house chili oil for a little extra spice and peppery depth, but these well-made rolls were terrific all by themselves. It should also be noted that the portion is very generous, especially for the price ($12.80), and more than enough for 2 people (perhaps 4 people, if each has 1/2). My other dish was the Qinghai Clear Cold Noodle, a terrific-looking, and even better-tasting blend of thick, chewy noodles, fresh chopped garlic, veggies, tofu and chili sauce that's got a bit of heat but more so a pleasing depth of Chinese spices. This appetizer is packed with flavor and just happens to be Vegan (as are a number of menu items), so it can be enjoyed by anyone. All in all, this was a fantastic mid-week lunch that pleased the senses without breaking the bank, and I even brought some home for later. Do give this Noodle St. a try -- and if you're not in Pasadena, check their website, because they have 8 locations, with a 9th opening soon in Sherman Oaks.

The quality was solid, and everything came out hot. The chicken wings were great, the garlic green beans and cucumber salad were amazing, and the signature spicy ramen was really good too. It was a bit greasy, almost like birria, but the meat was tender and the broth tasted like it had been cooking for 48 hours deep, rich, and full of flavor. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the Korean beef. It was way too sweet and didn't really give Korean BBQ flavor. The meat seemed more steamed than grilled, and not even vinegar or chili oil could save it for me. Other than that, everything else was fresh, flavorful, and worth coming back for.

You really cannot go wrong with the xiao long bao, steamed buns, or any of their other dumpling offerings. Beyond the dumplings, they have a lot of other dishes I really enjoy. Some of my favorites are the beef rolls, spicy wontons, green onion pancake, chow fun, orange chicken, and chow mein noodles. The noodles are especially good and, importantly, not overly greasy or oily, which can sometimes be an issue at other places. The prices are also competitive, especially considering the portions and quality of the food. It is the kind of place where you can order a good spread, share a bunch of dishes, and feel like you got a solid meal for the money. I also love that they bring out sugared peanuts when you sit down. It is a small touch, but a really nice one. The restaurant has plenty of seating, though service can be a bit slow at times, so good luck flagging down a waiter when it gets busy. You can also tell they are a high-volume dumpling restaurant because there is often steam in the dining room, which can make the restaurant feel a little warm at times. A couple of practical heads-ups: the tables are on the smaller side and can get crowded quickly if you order a lot of dishes, so just be mindful if you are planning to feast. You will also likely need to park in one of the structures around the area, but there is a large parking structure right across the street and plenty of parking options around Old Town. The slippery shrimp had a nice crisp with a pleasant blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors. There's a slight spice from the red chili that felt mild on my tongue. This was our first time trying out the dish, and we liked it the most. The orange chicken tasted solid, and it had a slightly crispy texture. Ordering was super easy with the QR code system, so my husband handled the whole spread: shumai dumplings, chicken feet, sesame balls, and more. It can get really busy, though, so expect to wait or just call in your order and take your food to go. I recommend the soy sauce tofu with beef dish. It's fire. Massive W. Gen Z words. Good.

Overall we enjoyed our meal and experience and would totally come back to try other dishes…read more Food - everything was fresh tasting. Lobster: we enjoyed the Colette special sauce, it was aromatic with the basil, good level of spice, and lobster meat was cooked perfect. Salt and pepper calamari: great crunch, wish it had a little more salt & pepper & garlic seasoning most pieces weren't coated, but the calamari texture had the perfect chew. Crispy vermicelli with beef: loved the crispy noodles and soft beef stir fry textures together, definitely ask for chili oil with this dish, it needs that extra umph of flavor for the noodles. Salted egg yolk pumpkin: I normally love this dish, only wished the outside was crispier, got soggy fast and with how thick these are cut you want the crispy exterior, but flavor was good. Only thing that made me feel a bit "eh" was the chipped plateware they have and continue to use. Service - wonderful! Everyone was so friendly and had nice customer service. They even helped recommend dishes and also share opinions on what we shouldn't order which I loved. Parking - free parking lot! There are a few spaces right in front of the restaurant. But around the side there's more parking as well.
