Had not been to the CB since my college days at CSU...so forever ago. Went back over homecoming weekend and it was so nice to see that some things never change! There is no way you can go wrong...steak wise that is. There is an eclectic steak selection on the menu so stick with that and you're good to go! Cooked to order and juicy, the best steak in Fort Fun! The old wood feel is great for this place and makes the whole experience uniquely Fort Collins. Went there for many years great service, reasonable price, decent food. Last time was treated like crap by the waitress and very slow service. Asked for our check, she came back with it and left never to return. Finally went to the front cashier to pay, they took it back to the waitress to cash out. I went back here just the other night. They still have great salads with chex cereal on it and baked potato with sour cream. Yum! I think they have a new menu item they offer now. It is like the Char- Ka-Bob but in the form of a pepper steak. While I love the pepper steak it is a big piece of meat! We frequented this spot many times as kids. Quite the interesting interior still - if you like pitch dark with no exposure to daylight. I'm no longer a red meat fan but found the chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries yummy. A must-see if you're visiting town. While visiting Fort Collins, my brother and his umpire buddies invited me to dinner at Charco Broiler. Though I never crave a steak, I was promised that I could NEVER go wrong with the Pepper Steak, so.. I caved and ordered it. Holy Toledo... The Pepper Steak was not only HUGE, but delicious. I got a side salad and the gourmet mashed potatoes for my starters. The side salad was basic, but quality. The gourmet mashed potatoes were AMAZING! They had some sort of cheese mixture in them. So so so so good! For the finale, I ordered the coconut creme pie. I am NOT a pie fan, but this was the best piece of pie that I have EVER had! 4 stars cause I'm a fan. I used to be a cook there when I was in high school I graduated from Poudre HS in 1977. My sister worked there when she was at Fort Collins HS, graduated in 1965. I was in FC recently and went in for a steak sandwich. Few things have changed in 30 years, except it's actually much brighter in there than it used to be. I helped install the huge inverted copper pot in the bar. The Pepper Steak is great. People come from Nebraska for the Peanut Butter Pie. They cut all their own meat from whole loins. In the grand scheme of steak houses, Charo Broiler is average at best. This is nothing like a high end steak house like a Ruth Chris or even the Ship Tavern in Denver. read more

I've been eating here for about 40 years. It's my choice every time I visit. I have found that the last couple of times the pepper steak has been tougher and although it is still delicious, it takes a bit more work. I love the ambiance and the flavor is still great, the waitresses we have had have been awesome and I love the salad with the rice Chex, so I will return, but the loss of a star was because the of the toughness, not the flavor. read more

Ate here last night, was satisfying but not extraordinary. Good: salads (the chex mix on top was a tasty surprise), petite filet (cooked perfectly to medium rare), ribeye and the baked potatoes. Also the bread rolls were fabulous! Bad: The pepper steak was over seasoned and over cooked. The "gourmet" mashed potatoes were full of flavor, but had a gluey consistency I didn't care for. Overall, I liked it and the food was good. Since I didn't like everything about my meal I can't go above 4 stars, but if you're looking for a low key place to eat with tasty food, this place fits the bill. read more

A Fort Collins Landmark from way back- I've been told. Went there for lunch the other day. Classic old western decor....I had a Burger that was pretty good. My guest had a Steak Sandwich that looked a whole lot better. Fries are shoe string and come out dripping...not my favorite, but they were at least crispy. Charco Broiler is super old school. If you're in the mood for an old fashioned American burger and fries or steak and potato kind of meal I would recommend making your way over. My husband and I had been curious about this place for a while - we figured it had to be special if it has remained in the same place with all of its 1950's Americana unadulterated. The inside is really very pretty. I'm sure back in the day this was the place you saved your nickels and dimes to have a steak on your anniversary, but the prices are very affordable. I mean, not they forgot to adjust the prices for inflation affordable, but pretty good for steak and burgers. Being from Chicago I also thought it was kind of neat that green chile is a side dish at a steak house. I had their Hawaiian burger and thought it was pretty good. I've gone here many times throughout my 12 years in Colorado and they have gone downhill. I went to eat here a few days ago and got a rare ribeye steak and it was more like it was almost well done and chewy. Not much flavor at all I've had way better. Their sweet potato fries aren't as good as they used to be. They need more salt and didn't taste fresh out of the fryer. Their burgers look incredibly dry and non appetizing. Their onion rings are pretty good at least still. Pretty sad when the appetizer is the only good thing on the menu. I wouldn't recommend the seafood because its just frozen/farm raised fish. Also the mixed veggies are not favorable AT ALL, pretty sure they were just frozen or something. Also the waitress/hostess were f***in rude. Never smiled at us and didn't ask us if we needed anything or if we were okay so we didn't feel very welcome. Horrible food and horrible hostesses/waitresses! 1 Star for the onion rings purely. The Charco Broiler has always been a favorite of my family's. It still looks the same as I remember it did almost 10 years ago. The peanut butter cream pie is heavenly. My only qualm with my recent visit was with the service. Our server didn't really know what their sides or desserts were (I'm guessing she was new), and she took a while to bring back our drinks. I would be more understanding if it were busier, but it was 3:00pm. I double checked that my salad didn't have bacon bits on it and it didn't... but the waitress neglected to tell me about the ham in my mashed potatoes and I found out on my own. We needed a place within walking distance of our BW Hotel. My brother and I were very hungry and this place seemed like paradise. I highly recommend the patty melt, every bite was delicious, try the onion rings or sweet potato fries. Another high recommendation is the pepper steak. Amazing steak!! I ordered the ribeye medium it was cooked perfectly. I did add some salt and pepper to taste. My sides were the salad and gourmet mashed potatoes...I was surprised to see they put Chex on the salad it adds crunch but kind of weird. The mashed potatoes texture I did not like as a matter of fact none of us did (3 people in my party). Very stodgy. The service was amazing! I believe her name was elaine!? Really great place to eat. Got a very most and tender pork loin wrapped in bacon with 2 sides (I got a mountain of mashed potatoes couldn't finish them!). The food was fantastic have no complains about the food. Very nice and hospitable staff. My only complaints was that it was dimly lit hard to read the menus. And beers were in bottles but I would definitely go back prices are very reasonable. If you are in Fort Collins and want a home cooked meal go here! read more

The owner (I believe) is really sweet. We had reservations and something happened to where our group was to be split and she was very attentive and willing to figure something else out. The service was a bit slow (or could have been more attentive) and our steaks were all over cooked. But it wasn't bad tasting. I had no complaints about the food. read more

I have to start off my saying that the Banana Cream pie and peanut butter pie are both excellent! My husband had the New York strip steak and I devoured a tasty southwestern burger. Our daughter had the jumbo fried shrimp and buttered noodles and a slice of chocolate pie. She said the chocolate pie tasted odd and upon tasting it I would agree but it was something I couldn't quite explain. The raspberry iced tea wasn't bad and it was nice to have a full carafe left at the table. Interesting bar layout for sure but overall I think the restaurant is outdated. This is a favorite of my husband's grandparents so they love to treat us here. As people have remarked, the service is as friendly as it comes. I cannot say much to any food there besides their steaks. You go to a steak house like this for a steak! Every time I have gone they have been nice cuts cooked to perfection. The place has an old timey-hasn't changed much type of feel to it. The amount of food that is served to you is also nice big old-fashioned portions. Stopped in here by a referral. I wanted a steak and couldn't see paying $26 for an 8oz average cut of meat at a previous place I ate. I ordered the rib-eye (13oz) costed $23 (very reasonable, maybe even a hair cheaper than expected). My steak was ordered medium and came out with a mild heart beat still (very rare). I don't like to complain and would have eaten it, but my waitress (Michelle) insisted on taking it back to be cooked a hair longer. After the steak returned, it was cooked as ordered. I also got a slice of pie. Dessert wasn't on my mind, but as I was reaching into my pocket at the table for some money, Michelle said the magic words "pie" and "coconut cream". Dang it....so I received my pie and it was probably enough for 2 people. The nice surprise was the price again...only $5. I'm used to dining at places charging $8-$10 for desserts and $25-$30 for steaks. My service and value are enough that I would probably return again. Some turn offs....maybe I sat too close to the kitchen, but there were a lot of young people (servers, kitchen staff) acting young. Very chit chatty, gossipy, and very not busy or working. It just felt like they were over staffed for the night and the immature lack of professionalism was right in front of me. Another turn off was the steamed vegetables were over cooked (kind of mushy). Like I said, I'll return. However, if the kids are being kids or the steak isn't prepared correctly w/o having to send it back, I'll probably be checking out another place to get my next steak. read more

Stopped in for dinner at the recommendation of the motel staff in town. Charming and unique decor. Warm atmosphere. Attentive servers. Best restaurant steak I've had under $30 in ages. Inclusive meal pricing, with 2 sides and roll with entree. The steak, both ribeye and sirloin kebab meat, was tender, well marbled, and flavorful. They were cooked perfectly medium as per order. Service was good. The atmosphere was dark and weird. This place is definitely trapped in its own kind of time capsule - not in a good way. The restaurant is very large and cave like. My wife and I were the youngest paying customers in the restaurant, we are each about 30. If you are looking for a nice modern place to eat do not go here. My family and I went there for my birthday and it was such a fun experience, made extra fun by our outgoing and hilarious waitress! We made a reservation and were seated in a round booth with a wagon wheel chandelier - kitschy and fun! The Food: The salad had Chex cereal on it which made us all kind of chuckle and then the waitress brought out two more bowls of Chex with ranch dressing for my kids - and they loved it - kind of quirky, lots of funny! We ordered 1/2 pound burgers, southwestern chicken and a steak - all were totally delicious. The food isn't gourmet or super fancy but the meat was all cooked *perfectly*. The night we were there they had baked sweet potatoes (not usually on the menu) and they were awesome! I also got a free piece of pie with my meal since it was my birthday - I chose the peanut butter pie - the piece was big enough for 4 of us to split! It was tasty, maybe not the best I ever had, but we ate it all! The Atmosphere: I love all things vintage and the décor of this place is straight out of 1957! Some would call it outdated - I call it awesome! If it isn't broke - don't fix it! The Service: Excellent! This seems like a local hangout for the older crowd in Fort Collins, which means it's good. The atmosphere is a throwback to western culture 1960 and very cool. It's dark and homey. We had great filets at a very reasonable price. Chex cereal on the salad is a must do! With cocktails, filets and deserts for the two of us it was $68. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. We liked it so much we went back the next morning for breakfast and enjoyed that also. The location is not in a great part as it is mostly industrial or big box shopping. If you are staying at the Best Western next door to this place it is a must do. And it's worth the drive if you are not. read more

I have lived and visited the Charco Broiler since 1988 and the last couple times I have gone it has been terrible. I ordered my steak medium well and even stated "I would like it pink" and received it OVER well done, chewy and NO flavor. The bake potato was boiled (yes you can tell) and then wrapped in foil and cold enough the butter would not melt. My guest ordered the club steak medium rare and it was so raw he could barely eat eat. (cold on the inside) and the steamed vegetables were cold. The last 2 visits the service is not that great, like the servers have so much more to do than wait on the customers. 3 customers, $70, not worth it. We won't return. It's sad because they used to have the best steak in town but the cook clearly does not know how to prepare steaks and shortcuts on the bake potatoes is gross. read more
