Terrible.... my husband had been here before and stated it was very good. After our visit last night he sadly has changed his tune. I had the salmon , dry and flavorless. I ordered a side of veggies (broccoli,cauliflower,carrots and mushrooms) they were soggy and flavorless. The side salad came with cereal on top... My husband ordered the Charco ka bab..,, he has it the last time and remembered it being very good. Not so last night. A few chunks of meat on a stick covered in gravy. No veggies on a ka bab? Hubby and I have been eating here since we were kids. It's always a must on our trips through Fort Collins. I'll start with dessert, because you must save room for the peanut butter pie. This pie is like no other peanut butter pie we've ever eaten!!! My go to order is always the spinach salad, always with the poppy seed dressing, and with a side of garlic bread. I was craving a char broiled burger and we googled to find one in Fort Collins. We couldn't find anything, so we thought Oh! Charco Broiler! It's gotta be what we want! But nope. I was so disappointed. We both asked for medium well, but got medium. And I don't know why, but my whole burger seemed wet and the bun kept falling apart. The sweet potato fries were very good, but the regular fries were average and a little bendy. My daughter had the chicken tenders and they just tasted weird. Service was good and I love the atmosphere...reminds me of restaurants I used to visit back east in the 70s. I can't think of anything, though, that could get me to go back there. I was staying in Fort Collins on my way from Montana to Texas. After eating Taco Bell for several days, I treated myself to a sit down dinner. (and picked this restaurant because I didn't have to drive to it from my hotel .) The service was excellent and so was my meal. They even had a real chives for my baked potato! I only had a chopped steak, so I can't comment on how good the other steaks were. But my top steak was excellent. And they had a nice Hefeweizen on tap. read more

A little slice of 1960's nirvana, like a time capsule for steakhouses. We went for breakfast and weren't disappointed. Facing a 700 mile leg of our trip we wanted to make sure we got started right and the vibe of this place did the trick. The entry and feeling of the building triggered what some might call flashbacks, the way the lighting and decor are just dark enough to to convince you its late at night - there are no windows. Service was fast and friendly. Very nice and helpful, although we missed breakfast by about 20 minutes our server pointed out the specials and I went with a steak sandwich that was heavenly. Although my salad did come with chex for croutons it was tasty and primed me for that sandwich just right. Price was great too. Would highly recommend, given its location right next to our hotel it's a safe choice for travelers too. read more

We went here in hopes that this place would be a nice relaxed place for a good date night between me and significant other. What we experienced was incredibly disappointing and almost insulting. From the start we did not feel welcome. Both me and her (in our 20s) were younger than the rest of the clientele and were largely treated as such. They first checked both of our IDs repeatedly and denied them first before accepting them as they were unfamiliar with how the Colorado Drivers license looked. After this it took a rather long time for them to make a simple martini and grab a can of beer. When we were finally allowed to order food we had chosen a ribeye steak (medium rare) for me and a steak sandwich (medium rare) with a rock lobster tail for her. After waiting again to receive our food the steaks came out over cooked and chewy and the lobster came out old, over cooked, rubbery and tasting of old seafood. When we brought this up to the manager we had 3 staff in total come by to verify that the lobster was indeed poorly made and that we were not lying. After they removed the lobster (ignoring the steaks and service) they proceeded to tell us that the front door was locked and that we could leave though the back. This felt as if they were physically locking us in the restaurant to ensure we could not leave unnoticed. Overall this place felt hostile to all but their usual clientele, the food was over priced and cooked rather poorly, and we will be sure to stay away as I suggest you do as well. read more

Oh my - where to start. I ordered the hickory hamburger and sweet potato fries. Everything was presented well and delicious tasting. The service was superb, ie received re-fills without asking as well as just prompt and professional. Then to end the feast I had a peanut butter pie. It was huge and beyond great in flavor. Very clean and wonderful service but the streaks were lacking. They lacked marbling and no bone-in options as far as I could tell. But food was not untasty, and everything was good overall. Charco Broiler is a Fort Collins classic. While not the trendiest place in the world, the Broiler has seen a lot of changes over 50+ years. The hot tip is to request to sit in the 'North 40,' the newest section of the restaurant (as opposed to the coffee shop or bar). The salad is unique, served up with Corn Chex in lieu of croutons. I went with the 10 oz New York which is one of the self proclaimed House Specialties. The steak was cooked perfectly although I probably committed the ultimate sin of adding A1 to some of it (they don't mind here). They were out of baked potatoes before 7, and my substitution of the Gourmet Mashed seemed like they had been heating for awhile. This is a cool, inexpensive steakhouse that you can get into whenever you want. It does show its age but it is definitely worth a shot so you can say you went there. Always head to the Charco Broiler any time I'm in the area. We will make a special trip from Cheyenne, Wy, just for a good steak at the "Broiler". I have been a regular customer since 1959 or 60, when we 'd go to Fort Collins for the cattle sales. The menu offering is basically the same, plus some additions. All through my college days at CSU, my go-to place was the "Broiler" for their club steak sandwich, which was $1.75 at that time. Still eat that same sandwich, fries & salad(with the original wheat chex on top. Great steaks, salads are always fresh, be sure to try their fresh spinach salad with hot onion dressing! The salmon is delicious, fried shrimp are huge! Oh, but if you can help yourself, leave enough room for fresh made peanut butter pie, or one of their other homemade cream or fruit pies. Horrible experience!!!! Only giving 1 star because I had to!! Visiting from Texas and this has always been the place we come when in town. We had a large group (16 total) so I called in advance to ask if they could accommodate us. They told us yes, they put us in 2 tables but still near each other. 30 min later they take our drink order. We don't get any service after that. We even let our server know that we have been ready to place our order. She walks past us and states she will be with us shortly and proceeds to take the order of a table that just arrived. We then decided we were just going to leave. We asked for our ticket and were ignored once again. One of the servers came and tossed the ticket on the table and walked away. So since I moved to FOCO six years ago I have heard nothing but good things about this place so when a relative visited I figured I'd go. BIG MISTAKE! We're too start yes the salad has chex not croutons, no big it kind of works. Next one of the people in my group ordered fish and chips and was asked what she would like as her side, I jokingly said "isn't that the chips." and the waitress said yeah but you get a side so she picked broccoli cheese soup. The fish and chips came without chips and we were told "that's just what it's called " and she could get us fries but they would be extra. The broccoli cheese soup was watered down nacho cheese with what I am assuming was a bag of frozen broccoli pureed and added in. I myself got a patty melt now the menu says it's a burgers served with sautéed mushrooms & onions, American and Swiss cheese on sourdough, I asked for no onions and no Swiss. Apparently this meant no anything. What I received was a cold dry burger with one slice of cheese on toast. Now the third and final person got the bacon ranch burger and when I asked how it was I got a shrug and "it's a burger". All this cost us $60.00. This place was amazing. Are there on 11-12-22. My husband had a side salad and the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly. Nice and crispy on the outside and cooked med rare inside. I had the cob salad. It was awesome. They make all their dressings in house. I also had French onion soup. Maybe the best I've had. Now for the drinks...I had the Coconut Cream Pie Martini. Uh, it was so good. Also had a dessert coffee with kahlua and Bailey's. My husband had a beer and a local rye whiskey on ice that he said was really good. With all of this our bill was $74. I didn't think that was bad. Wonderful Mom and Pop place. Not to far off the interstate and near a few different hotels. My family has been coming for a while but this was the first time I was able to join them. We went in for breakfast. After years of driving past, I was always was skeptical since the restaurant looks so dark. which it is. Only a few windows from the ceiling offer natural light. I've lived in FC more than 50 years and the Charco Broiler has always been a reliable go-to restaurant. Not this past Friday night. if I could give a grade it would be C for food and C for service. We were taking friends visiting from WI out to dinner. We had told them how great this iconic restaurant was and that we have been visiting it on and off for decades. What a disappointment! My husband, who had the bacon wrapped filet, was the only person who enjoyed his dinner. My Pepper Kabob, ordered medium, was served well done. Our friends also had Pepper Kebobs, ordered RARE and they were medium at best. The kebob pieces were so small...no wonder they were all over cooked. We were hungry and the restaurant was busy so we ate our food that normally I would have sent back. Kristi was our server. After a friendly greeting, she was missing in action for most of the evening except for an infrequent pass-by asking if everything was okay. It wasn't, but by the time she came by we had been sitting there awhile with our overcooked entrees. We waited for everything...more napkins, water, our check. Kristi wasn't rude by any means, but we were just another table, someone she had to serve whether she wanted to or not. For many years now Charco has been a favorite dinner night out for me and my wife. Always the food is consistent, steaks are great, and the spinach salad is fantastic. French Onion Soup is another great choice. Favorite desert is the Vern's Toffee Ice Cream Pie, but any pie they have is a potential sell out. Love the rustic decor and I am impressed that the restaurant over so many years has remained maintained, and clean. On occasion, I have had spotty service never horrible service. To me it is a real human experience, a personal relationship of occasional errors, with casual expectations. You can see all the customers there seem to have fallen into the same love-comfort as well. This place has long relationships with employees, customers, and the story of how they started is worth asking about. I have heard the story from the staff at the Fort Collins location and the once sister location in Loveland. The dinner was hot and fresh, I had the club steak(which is a thick cut sirloin) so tender and juicy it melted in my mouth, it was accompanied by a baked potato and a slice a fruit which is there signature for each dish. The baked potato was actually baked in the oven to perfection. The rustic feel of the restraunt sets the tone for a wonderful dinner. All of the staff members were very friendly and helped each other out. Even the manager pitched in to help clean up a big party that had just left so they could seat more guests. With the constant cycle of restaurants opening and closing, I often wonder what makes some of the Fort Collins classics stand the test of time. We have some restaurants that have been operating for well over 30 years, and some of them aren't that wonderful when it comes to taste and quality. So, if the food isn't particularly fantastic, then it must be the relationships they maintain with their customers, right? Maybe it has something to do with nostalgia? I believe this is so for Charco Broiler. Charco Broiler has been a steakhouse staple in Northern Colorado since 1957. On the outskirts of the city on East Mulberry, it's a restaurant that is hard to miss. With interesting architecture and an enormous bright yellow sign with a steer head logo, it certainly looks like it has been around for generations. In their early years, they began as a coffee shop with a small kitchen. As the years went on, they grew with eleven additions and eight remodels and morphed into a steakhouse with a multitude of awards, and a staff that has been around for ages - some for 25 years! I decided to go with a petite New York strip and a lobster tail with a side of mashed potatoes. This is where dinner went downhill for me. The steak was ordered medium rare, and came out that way, but was tough and flavorless. I practically never add salt to anything - at home or a restaurant (especially a restaurant) - but there was so little flavor to the steak that I had to season it myself with the signature garlic salt provided at the table. And even then, it wasn't great. I was left wondering why on Earth they had won so many awards for their steaks. This was not noteworthy in the least, and it was touted to be their most flavorful of cuts! I went back again for breakfast. This is what Charco Broiler should be known for - the classic diner breakfast. Simple, but still packed with hearty smoked flavor, the skillet breakfast hit the spot. There's no better way to eat this than with eggs over easy, otherwise you're going to end up with a relatively dry meal. The Charco Broiler has been around for longer than most other restaurants in Fort Collins. I'm not convinced it's because they have a great steak, but it's because they have a community of loyal customers that have been coming by for many years. It's the fact that they are known by name, have "the usual" every week and it's a part of their daily life. There's comfort in the food. First off, I seriously worry about people who go to a steakhouse and don't order steak. While my husband was perusing the menu, he saw spaghetti. He just looked at me, with his best "WTF?" face. I just nodded. Anyway, if you like STEAK (especially undercooked, delicious steak), this is the place to come, The atmosphere is cavelike and very cool. They will cook your steak any way you want it. My husband ordered his rare and it actually came out rare- imagine that! Prices seemed reasonable for the size and quality of meat that we received. And a comment about the pie....I ordered coconut cream (after already polishing off my 12 oz steak). I figured I'd have plenty of stomach space for it...and I horribly misjudged the size of that pie wedge. It was probably 1/4 of a pie- no joke. And it was FANTASTIC.
