It was another delicious and tasty lunch at El Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Courthouse Marketplace off Nimmo Plwy! I introduced this great Mexican restaurant to my BFF since she hasn't tried it. She wanted something simple for lunch and was able to order something that wasn't on the menu: grilled chicken and rice with avocado slices. She was very happy with her plate! The service is always fast and the staff is very attentive. My go-to is Lunch 7 since it's always exactly what I'm craving. The chicken and bean burrito topped with the fresh lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, and tomatoes is perfect with the side of rice instead of beans. I truly enjoy the dining experience each time I come back. Can't say enough great things! I especially like the spaciousness of the padded booths, the lovely art on the walls, lights at the bar, and the music that makes the restaurant feel festive. read more

I was here on a Sunday afternoon and it was quiet. A few tables had people. They were very helpful with my mom in her wheelchair and when we didn't want the 1st table. Or the 2nd. And when I say WE I mean my mom and her friend. Very patient with us. Chips and salsa and the white sauce came out right away with water. I love that they have lunch specials on Sunday. I got the #4 which was a tamale, beef taco and rice and beans. My moms friend got the #13 and my mom got the Speedy Gonzalez. They were VERY patient with the substitutions for the #13. Everything came out fast and hot. Food was solid and typical mexican food around here. The restaurant was very clean and "modern" with those Insta photo ops around the restaurant. It can get packed in here. First time I went it was difficult to understand the waitress so if you are practicing your Spanish, this would be great. Second visit I tried the burria tacos. Not the best I've had but they were pretty good besides the over salting. Sports in tv. Loud music. Ceviche was okay. My brother comes here for the micheladas (claims they taste just like the ones he had in Guatemala). It's basically a Latino Bloody Mary but with beer. Sometimes the waiting staff can be very busy. Three words: Soft Serve Margaritas! Look no further, there's FINALLY a restaurant in Hampton Roads that has Sorbet/ Soft Serve Margs! The food is good, but definitely comparable to other Mexican Restaurants in the area-- this restaurant just has an added perk, which is enough for us to choose it above others. I got the Taquitos Mexicanos, and my husband got the Birria Quesadilla. I absolutely love the shredded chicken in the taquitos, I prefer it over grilled chicken! The Birria in the quesadilla was tender and flavorful, but we wish it came with more consome! The food and drinks earn 5/5 stars, but we're having our experience 4 stars because of the service. Though nice, our server was slow with our requests, and didn't check on us after we got our food. We wanted to order another round of drinks but didn't get the chance since she only came back after we were done with our food and full. We were close by and wanted margaritas. Got on yelp and found this restaurant. So glad we found this spot. Food was really good and the strawberry margarita hit the spot on a sunny Sunday afternoon. There's a big sign in front of the restaurant with their phone number for curbside pickup and call ahead. Perfect for people who drive into the shopping center wondering if they are open for business or not. We called in our order from the parking lot after going thru their menu from their website. We ordered carne asada fries, tacos and a margarita. They said it would be done in 10mins. Service was so fast! We pulled up to the curbside and called them back to let them know we were in front. Shortly after they came out with our full order. Service was super fast and they were also very friendly. The food was fresh and delicious. Everything hit the spot. This El Azteca Mexican Restaurant opened recently in the Courthouse Marketplace Shopping Center, which is located next to the Virginia Beach Municipal Center. My first visit here was on August 1, 2019. My most recent in person visit was on January 25, 2020. However, I have ordered from them for delivery on March 30, 2020 during the stay at home orders. A few days before coming here, we had gotten a coupon for the place in the mail (each time we've visited). We had been to their other location in Town Center in the past, but it was further away, so we didn't go to that one very often. When you get to the shopping center, it's not too hard to find the place. You can see the Mexican theme outside, as well as inside once you come in. The host stand is right there as you enter. The main dining area is to the right and the bar is to the left. We were seated in the main dining room area and were given chips and salsa immediately. A few seconds later our server was at the table asking for our drink and appetizer order. Of course we did the cheese dip appetizer. After a few minutes, the cheese dip came to the table and our server asked if we were ready to order. In this case, we were ready to order. I went with the Burrito Mexicano, taking beans instead of rice. My mom went with the Fajita Quesadillas with beef, taking beans instead of rice. As usual, it didn't take too long for the food to come out. It was probably 6-8 minutes between the time we ordered and the time the entrees came out. Just like before, the food came out hot, fresh, and looked great. The Burrito Mexicano came out exactly as ordered. It tasted great and was a good portion size as well. The beans were great too. I've never been a fan of rice, so that's why I always opt for beans instead. My mom liked the Fajita Quesadillas as well. I wanted to share my experience with the delivery on March 30, 2020 as well. I called in earlier in the day to see if they did delivery, and confirmed they did. Later that day, I called up and ordered for delivery. We were even able to use the coupon we had as well. We did stick with what we had gotten from them in the past. Payment was done via phone, but did need to sign the receipt when they came, so it wasn't able to be a full contactless delivery. The food was just as good as it was as if we were in there. The only thing that didn't seem right were the chips, as they did taste stale. That was probably just a fluke. It didn't matter as we had lots of chips here at home anyways. Overall, I have had some great experiences with this new location for El Azteca. In the restaurant, the service has always been good and attentive. Food has been great. This gives a great experience overall. Even the delivery version turned out well too. If you are in the area and looking for a Mexican restaurant, definitely check this place out, even if it just takeout and delivery until this pandemic ends and things get back to the new normal. read more

We stumbled on this Mexican restaurant one afternoon when we are headed to Waffle House and decided we were looking for tacos instead. It was a lucky decision The restaurant itself Is a long open room with tables in the center booths around the side. In a second section there's a Long Bar as well as a few booths. Traditional Mexican restaurant decorations including a small Aztec calendar on the wall. The wait staff are friendly and quick. even though they struggle a bit with English it really isn't difficult to communicate when you're talking about burritos and tacos. Get over it. They automatically bring chips With salsa And the Hampton Roads white sauce To the table. It's one of the rare places where the chips are virtually always At least warm and usually hot. We've ordered both chicken and pork dishes. They're shredded pork is good and reminds me strongly of the filling for Christmas tamales. Speaking of which the tamales are very good here. The chicken is two types. One is white meat shredded which is Juicy and flavorful. The better one though is a grilled chicken that's dark meat. For drinks, they have a good amaretto, the peach and lime Margaritas are both acceptable. And we really like the raspberry daiquiris. The price is what you expect from the area sit down Mexican restaurants or perhaps a little bit less. Not sure why others gave such negative reviews. This is a newer place. Not many patrons when we arrived at about 1pm on a Sunday. Service was fine. Menu selection was robust like with most of these type Mexican restaurants. Chips and salsa standard while waiting for meals. Guac was a tad on the bland side. The meals were good portions and what I would consider good value for the price. Frozen margarita was like any other in comparison to other Mexican restaurants. My guess is given the location, they have a more robust business in the weekdays when the city government buildings are open. This one will be a repeat for us. read more

Not great.  I ordered online, got there before the food was ready, and only live 10 min away.   Ordered two meals, an appetizer (1/2 plate Nachos Supreme) and Churros.   Nothing was marked My Fajitas came with no tortillas The shrimp in the Fajitas were not fully cooked (still translucent) The ret of the Fajitas were very lightly seasoned if seasoned at all.   The Nachos was this big blob of ingredients crammed into the to go container.  IT was good, but not Nachos anymore really.  Just mush.  You get a lot of food, but they really need a better way to package it so it's still nachos when you get home, nut mush that was formerly known as nachos.   Churros were good Not likely yo go back.. read more

All the food here is stellar. They have the best white sauce, complimentary if you dine in, (chips and salsa included.) We were greeted and seated right away. They have ample seating here, so you shouldn't have to wait too long. If you're coming with a really large party, 10+ they'd still have space for you, but no private party room, or small section to fit a large party, which isn't really a problem. The tamales here are some of the best I've had, very moist and not dried out, which is rare in most restaurants here. We ordered shrimp and rice 'Arroz con camornes' and the shrimp are always cooked perfectly and flavorful. The rice with every dish is good, but not amazing. But all the other positives outweigh the one not amazing thing. But I highly recommend eating here. read more

I have been looking for good ceviche since I moved out here in 2015 and oh man I'm glad I found it! I'm from the West Coast so Im def used to TexMex style food but finding anything remotely close to that has been impossible. I went in a group of 5 and we all loved our dishes. The chips were delish, service was intentional, the music reminded me of childhood classics and the environment was clean and spacious. So, another Mexican Restaurant opened near us and since we consider ourselves Mexican Food connoisseurs, we wanted to check it out. It's like most Mexican places in Virginia Beach, same decor, same music, same fast service and same quality of food, comparable to Senor Fox, Plaza Azteca, Guad's, etc. I ordered the chicken fajitas and my wife had the pork carnitas. I could have closed my eyes and I wouldn't have been able to tell you which local Mexican spot I was in, because they all taste very similar and have almost identical menus. It's hard to stand out in this cuisine. You really have to work at it. We'd go back, but there are several other Mexican Restaurants out there that I'd go to before coming here. This location is tucked away in a shopping center behind the VB municipal center, so unless you frequent there, you might never know about it. We have been going to the Pembroke location for years, so decided to try out the new one on Nimmo once we discovered it. It is definitely bigger than it appears from the outside. The restaurant was clean and the decor was nice. There was also a bar. The food was just like the other location, so we were familiar with the menu. We got lunch specials which were priced right, and came out fast. The food was hot and tasted pretty good. Service was fast and friendly. UPDATE:: Just 15 minutes after leaving, I am now sick. Thanks El Azteca. I'll just stick with Plaza Azteca from now on. The food was good. But the service? I was the only one in there & everyone stared the entire time! I was rushed to order after saying I needed a few minutes because i'd never been there, she left to return literally 57 seconds later. I felt pressured & ended up ordering the Burrito Mexicano, It was okay, barley any chicken. My server (never even told me her name) never checked in with us until we were done eating & then brought out the check. She said, "Would you like to pay here or upfront?" I said, "Oh Upfront is fine, I can pay upfront!" & She said, "okay!" and stood at the side of my table watching me the entire time I was trying to gather my money. I felt so pressured & It was clear we weren't wanted in the restaurant from the moment we walked in the door. I've never had such an awkward dining experience in my life & i'm a server myself, She made it very clear she didn't want us there. With so many Mexican restaurants in Virginia Beach, I thought I would try this one. I remember this suite used to be a bar and grill. Located in the shopping center near the courthouse, it was easy getting in and out. Parking was pretty decent. Inside the restaurant looked clean and flowed easily, lots of booths. Bar was in a separate area. We greeted and seated right away. Chips and salsa and the white sauce were brought to our table along with refills. My son ordered a combination plate of a burrito, taco and chalupa along with a side of beans and rice. I had the burrito mexicano and the wife had a taco and enchilada combo. The food came out hot and fast. It was delicious and filling. The whole dining experience took less than an hour. I'm happy that the wait was not long from start to finish. The prices were reasonable for the 3 of us that dined here. With food, drinks and extra sides came out to 45 bucks including tax. I would probably come here again. read more
