11.09.2025 - seasonal (peach) crostock
Lovina C.

seasonal crostock - sliced seasonal fruit (peaches?) on top of croissant bread, topped with a crumble and powdered sugar. The fruit was fresh and the bread was solid though nothing out of the ordinary. A fresh and sweet treat.

I don't come to Bernal Heights often, so I made an effort to explore the area and came here for the cold brew. I picked up a savory beef Wellington and a sweet pain suisse pastry, which I really enjoyed together. Not a long wait during a weekday morning, and there are seats indoors and outdoors for you to relax and enjoy the start to your day. I wish this was closer to me since I would come more often, and definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

If you're like me, when you look into a bakery case full of fine pastries, you can't really control yourself. So take my advice: Walk to Bernal Basket. The walk up that hill will burn so many calories you'll be able to convince yourself it's ok. This place is legit. The hype is real. And it's as charming as the rest of the neighborhood. The star is the brioche-y cinnamon roll. Intense cinnamon flavor and plenty of fluffy cream cheese frosting. Definitely a lighter dough than most cinnamon rolls but such a strong flavor profile = excellent pastry experience! Also had an apple cider donut. Very good. Not quite the crunchy version directly from a traditional orchard but best in SF, it's a safe bet. Then the third thing I ordered was a Pain Suisse. It was ok. Really wish it had more filling. It tasted more like a croissant with a hint of chocolate and custard. Would have preferred a smaller pastry to make the proportions work better. It was pretty busy but I found space in the parklet and hung out for a while. They actually have heaters if it's cold. Nice touch. Definitely one of my favorite bakeries in the city already.

Fresh baked goods, coffee perfection and great staff/service. Not only can you grab a pastry or two but you can also purchase loaves of goodness. Don't sleep on this location when you are in Bernal Heights

So glad to have another cute local bakery on Cortland! They sell sandwiches, breads, and of course various savory and sweet baked goods. My favorites are the ham & cheese croissant (pro tip: reheat in your air fryer!) and the seasonal crostock, which is a croissant dough based pastry with jam or other toppings. When I visited most recently, the crostock had fuyu persimmon and pomegranate seeds, but it's always changing. Make sure to stop by if you're looking for a quick treat!

Been following this place on social media for a few months now ever since they opened in Bernal Heights - their sandwiches look so picturesque. We decided on the following: - PROSCIUTTO STRACCIATELLA: 3/5 - bread was tough and tasted a bit stale, prosciutto and cheese and stone fruit filling was tasty but overall was a bit disappointed. Looked better than it tasted - Tiramisu: 2/5 - soggy mess, good strong flavors though - Whole wheat bread: 3/5 - dense, was just ok - pain suisse au chocolat: 4/5 - our favorite of everything we ordered, tasty chocolate pieces, dessert itself was not as flaky but still very good Wouldn't go out of our way for this place again but if we're around next time might try their hot sandwiches.

Cute little spot next to United Dumplings. Came in to try the cinnamon roll but they were out so settled for a peanut butter cookie which was perfectly moist and flavorful without being too sweet. The staff were helpful in finding an alternative and threw in an extra cookie since it was nearing closing time. Will be back to try more soon!

Remember when the pandemic first started and people got hella creative with PPE? Hello, maxi pad as a mask and tampons in each nostril! Home-based Bernal Bakery was born during the start of the pandemic in March 2020 where the owners would lower a wicket basket on a pulley to deliver bread to customers on the street. Genius contactless delivery! Several years later after pop-ups in various farmers markets, they've opened their first brick & mortar at the former Little Bee Bakery space. As an ode to how they started, they've named their new bakery: Bernal Basket. M E N U Array of bread, focaccia, muffins, savory + sweet croissants, roman-style pizza, sandwiches, cookies, etc. Hot coffee available. Overall, happy to see Bernal Basket open up in the hood. Will need to return for their delicious looking pizza by the slice! ;)

I arrived shortly after 10:00 AM and was 4th in line with people continuing to get in line behind me. A staff member would signal for the next customer to come in when she was done with the previous customer. I asked for 2 plain croissants and a chocolate almond croissant. The croissants were placed in individual bags and then a medium sized bag with a handle. The bag had an Arsicault Bakery sticker. The croissants smelled wonderful on my 40 minutes walk back. The croissants were soft and flaky on the outside and the preserve found its way into the layered pockets of the croissant. The croissants were well worth the walk.

I've gone a few times around 10-11 AM and gotten through the line pretty quickly, plus they've never been sold out of anything. Another plus of this location is its proximity to Golden Gate Park; when the weather is nice it's great to pick up pastries from here, find a grassy area in the park to put down a blanket, and have a mini picnic. My favorite thing to get here is the chocolate almond croissant, especially since it's fairly unique and not too many other bakeries do it. Everything is perfect from the almond filling, the flaky croissant, the crunchy baked almond filling on top, and the melted chocolate. It's pretty heavy and dense though, even when hungry I can only get through half of it. It's still good later on (even after a day or two) but nothing beats it fresh. I also like to get the plain croissant and their kouign amann. The kouign amann has the same buttery, flaky layers as the croissant and has this caramelized sugar coating that I love. Don't love their chocolate chip cookie - too much chocolate and not enough cookie. But everything else I've tried from their is so worth the drive over, line, and prices.

The preorder box came with randomized drops of what's in season that week, our small box came with Herby Olive Twist, Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lamb Pain Suisse. The pastries: they really got their lamination down. The pastry shell is amazingly crispy and really good layers regardless of the type of toppings or fillings it has. The flavor combinations were fun and familiar. It's like getting some of your favorite foods being converted into a croissant. Of the ones we tried I really enjoyed the salty ones like the olive twist and lamb, I was impressed how well the pastry kept crispy even with the sauces. The sweet ones like the caramel were too sweet for me to even finish, but that can be personal preference. After trying all these fun flavors I still think the highlight is def the pastry, will need to try the original croissant next time! Ambiance: the vibe of the bakery was great, lots of hard working ladies and feels like they are passionate about what they do. Bright and airy with lots of pink accents. Would definitely come back again, but probably would not wait over a hour for it because we do have a lot of great bakeries in SF.

Each pastry had layers of flavors and it was so flaky. My absolute favorite was the morty P (big mortadella fan over here). This pastry was just perfect in every way. Definitely go early to get everything fresh, but you probably won't run into a line if you don't. Highlight of the menu was absolutely the kouign amann - it was so buttery and flaky with this caramelized sticky sweet inside, rivaled in my eyes only by the Arsicault one. We also got the seasonal one (raspberry and guava) which was also really good. The passion fruit bostock was also interesting with this spongy cakey texture with an almond topping. The banana chocolate almond croissant was another favorite of mine, it's also such a unique item and definitely a must order. We sat inside at a table so we could eat some of the pastries right away which I highly recommend - everything lost freshness after a few hours and I probably wouldn't get anything from here again with the intention of eating it later. They have a ton of cakes too, tried the chocolate mousse cake, the berry cake, and the passionfruit orange and guava cake. The chocolate mousse was my favorite and runs on the sweeter side compared to other chocolate mousse's I've had. The other two are also amazing and have a bunch of different layers. I also tried the prosciutto burrata and cherry tomato tartine - an open faced sandwich basically - which tasted good but was kind of difficult to eat, either with hands or fork and knife. Would definitely come here again both because what I tried was so good and there are so many other things there I'd want to try.
