Saw a friend post about this place saying it was the best jambon beurre she has had in the states so I had to try it. I agree it's definitely a top jambon beurre and I also tried the chicken caesar baguette sandwich was also great. The cinnamon bun here was also one of the better ones I have had in a very long time so that was a nice treat. Lots of other great looking pastries, sandwiches, cookies, etc, so will have to come back try some other things. It's a small unassuming place from the outside but easy enough to find. Parking on Cortland I find can be a little difficult at times but usually I can find a spot on one of the side roads fairly easily during the day. WIll definitely be back. Bernal Basket is a neighborhood bakery, that is more than just a bakery. If you haven't been here, you definitely need to put this on your list of must try when you're in Bernal Heights/ SF. They offer a wonderful variety of both sweet and savory pastries, and they also have lunch items such as made in house pizza ( I definitely will be back to try the pizza!) which looks absolutely delicious! We grabbed a couple different pastries to try, and the pastries were good, but the savory selection was delicious! Banana loaf slice: this was a generous slice that was moist and tasty, but it really missed with the overall flavor profile of banana. Almond croissant: a properly made croissant should be late and buttery and the almond croissant just wasn't. It tasted more like a dinner roll than it did a croissant. There was barely any almond flavor in it, and I would take a pass on this next time. The seasonal Cherry tomato pastry: go now! You want to try this while they are making it. This savory pastry is such a perfect breakfast/brunch pastry. The flavor profile is absolutely phenomenal, and it is mouth watering and delicious. It's filled with different cheeses, and topped with tomatoes. We heated up, and that was the game changer. The cheese was gooey and melty. Mmmm, mmmm, good! Finally got to stop by this cute neighborhood coffee shop! What I ordered: Iced Vanilla Latte with Oatmilk Banana Pecan Loaf FOOD/DRINKS: 7/10 I thought their iced latte was okay. I feel like their espresso shot tasted burnt, that's the closest thing I can think of to describe it. I do appreciate that they had a good ratio of espresso shot, syrup, and oat-milk. Their banana pecan loaf was pretty good. It was dense and the edges were a bit dry. I wish I asked them to warm up the loaf. They did have a wide variety of sweet and savory pastries/bites to choose from. SERVICE: 7/10 Service was quick. Staff were chill and friendly! AMBIANCE: 8/10 Ambiance is very cute. It's small inside with only 2 seats and a couch, but there is a decent amount of outdoor seating. I loved the vintage pieces of decor around the cafe. Visited a Saturday afternoon, there were a few folks around, but not busy at all. I was in and out in around 10-15minute. I ordered a butter croissant and a cappuccino. Overall, I would say both were ok. The croissant was fresh, but less buttery and flaky than what I expect from a croissant. The coffee was a bit acidic, but still good. If you're like me, when you look into a bakery case full of fine pastries, you can't really control yourself. So take my advice: Walk to Bernal Basket. The walk up that hill will burn so many calories you'll be able to convince yourself it's ok. This place is legit. The hype is real. And it's as charming as the rest of the neighborhood. The star is the brioche-y cinnamon roll. Intense cinnamon flavor and plenty of fluffy cream cheese frosting. Definitely a lighter dough than most cinnamon rolls but such a strong flavor profile = excellent pastry experience! Also had an apple cider donut. Very good. Not quite the crunchy version directly from a traditional orchard but best in SF, it's a safe bet. Then the third thing I ordered was a Pain Suisse. It was ok. Really wish it had more filling. It tasted more like a croissant with a hint of chocolate and custard. Would have preferred a smaller pastry to make the proportions work better. It was pretty busy but I found space in the parklet and hung out for a while. They actually have heaters if it's cold. Nice touch. Granted, it is a small cake (they say for 2, I think 4 medium-hungry people could have this), but I really just needed cake for two. $15 for the cake, and $6 each for a bunch of other delicious looking pastries (which I gave as a gift so I didn't get to try). So glad to have another cute local bakery on Cortland! They sell sandwiches, breads, and of course various savory and sweet baked goods. My favorites are the ham & cheese croissant (pro tip: reheat in your air fryer!) and the seasonal crostock, which is a croissant dough based pastry with jam or other toppings. When I visited most recently, the crostock had fuyu persimmon and pomegranate seeds, but it's always changing. Make sure to stop by if you're looking for a quick treat! read more

We decided on the following: - PROSCIUTTO STRACCIATELLA: 3/5 - bread was tough and tasted a bit stale, prosciutto and cheese and stone fruit filling was tasty but overall was a bit disappointed. Cute little spot next to United Dumplings. Came in to try the cinnamon roll but they were out so settled for a peanut butter cookie which was perfectly moist and flavorful without being too sweet. The staff were helpful in finding an alternative and threw in an extra cookie since it was nearing closing time. Will be back to try more soon! read more

i was looking for pastries and found this place on yelp. at 10am sunday, the store was small and crowded with a huge glass case of pastries and bread lining the shelves behind the counter. the line moved quickly and i got an apple cider donut and a pain suisse. the donut was DELICIOUS! i was expecting it to be somewhat dry and dense from past experience but it was nicely moist, spongy, and the sugar on the outside gave a subtle crunch. the spices weren't overwhelming either. i tried the pain suisse much later and it was underwhelming and a little dry, probably from sitting too long. i'll come back for more donuts for shore!! read more

A great new entrant to SF's sandwich scene and the Cortland corridor. The porchetta sandwich is one of the better ones I've ever had and I've had a lot of porchetta sandwiches. They had this anchovies aioli that was funky and piquant to help offset the richness of the pork. Cool new bakery in Bernal with friendly staff. We got the BEC croissant and the scallion scroll. The BEC isn't quite what one would expect. It has a premade egg square and it's topped with arugula. There's also salsa that tastes like a lemon vinaigrette. It's an interesting take, but I'd still prefer a regular breakfast sandwich that has a fried egg or omelette on it. The scallion scroll though is a definite winner. Very savory and flaky. Will definitely be back to try their other items. read more

They are still working out their logistical kinks -- I had to repeat my order three times which they eventually still got wrong but gave me a free cookie out of it -- but I respect the quality of their baked goods and the grind it takes to open up a passion project. We love Bernal Basket. It's become a special weekend ritual for us, and everything we've tried has always been delicious. It's clear a lot of care goes into the food, and it's something we genuinely look forward to. Unfortunately, our most recent visit left us disappointed. We asked a simple question at the counter--just wondering whether a certain pastry was better served cold or warm, and if it could be heated up. The staff member responded with attitude, didn't seem interested in helping, and just stared at us, making the interaction feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable. We decided to have our pastry warm, but while waiting, we overheard that same staff member--along with a couple others--mocking our question and laughing about it right in front of us.
