After reading so many good reviews, we were excited to visit Charlie's Bar & Kitchen. My party and I had high hopes, but were disappointed with the food. Went for brunch, but we weren't impressed. The pros: Nice brick interior with awesome photographs and artwork. The cons: Onto the less positive things...The omelet and egg scrambled were bland and didn't "wow" us. We were hoping to have received a crisp mixed green salad, instead, it was wilted. Asked for hot sauce, but it tasted like Buffalo wing sauce. Not enough of a selection on sliced bread (they only serve white.) Took a while to get a cup of coffee. I found it odd that it was brunch and was told that coffee needed to be brewed. Additionally, service could improve as well. Needless to say, we left feeling underwhelmed and would not return. read more

The first time I ever had an issue. The steak was extremely chewy and cold. My plate was taken back bit instead of refiring my order, they placed my plate in the microwave. This place has a great ambience; beautiful lighting and great location in an up and coming South Bronx neighborhood. I went here this past Saturday and enjoyed a beer and their 454 burger (with American cheese and bacon) and sat at the bar. There was a live band playing music, which added to the cozy atmosphere. Staff was friendly but not the most knowledgeable. The bartender who took my food order did not know that the burger came with fries. I also had to ask him for lettuce and tomato for my burger twice. This place def needs to train their staff better and step up their service game in order to stay competitive, especially because there are a lot of new places popping up in the neighborhood. read more

So I've been here before. Ambiance is nice. Good band on a Sunday. French toast was good. Today tables seated after us got their food before us. Then one person's food was over cooked. So he asked for something else and it never came. Then when talking about the order server walked away as we were talking, ignoring us. Needless to say this is not how any customer should be treated! Great food! I had the Moscow mule to start as a drink. Very smooth and refreshing with the vodka, ginger beer and lime. The Manson was a spicy drink yet palatable with its hints of cayenne and salt on the brim. The street corn at $7 was good with its notes of char from the grill. The fish tacos are kick ass at $10. They are small but an appetite opener! The truffle macaroni and cheese is seasoned well and the truffle flavor is not overpowering. Moreover, the portion size is just right whether you are sharing or having it as an entree as the dish is decadent. For entrees the risotto is amazing. I've had risotto else where but this is by far a good one. I had it with shrimp at an extra $5. I would try it on its own as the risotto comes with asparagus and mushrooms and we'll just does not need an added protein. The shrimp were a tad over seasoned but overall it did not harm to the dish. The food is solid at Charlie's, even with a couple of mishaps on delivery, I can't complain too much. It's usually busy in here, i just wish the staff seemed happier about it. I get a sense of annoyed-to-be-here on most visits. But still, the restaurant is cozy, people seem to be enjoying themselves at the bar at any given time, and the food is good. So, I don't even know how the food is yet because I walk into the Sunday brunch. The live band is located directly in front of the door. The so called singer is screaming so loud that I can barely hear myself think as I am directed to sit on what appears to be a stool. I have no where to place my coat not my purse because the table and stool are so small. The wait staff could care less as I asked them where I am supposed to place my belongings. I guess I was looking for something a little less crowded and loud with mediocre singing. I will write another review after I order and experience my food. Not impressed at all. Came back to edit my post to include the fact that the fish being used for the fish tacos is tilapia. Who still uses tilapia? That is a big no no for me and a deal breaker. I was forced to order the advocation toast which was just ok. I wish that they would have used better bread. It's seems as they just toasted up some wonder bread. The person that I was dining with had the shrimp and grits. They kept the tails on the shrimp so he had to keep digging his hands into his plate to grab the shrimp to rip the tail off. This place is wonderful. I was there during the holiday season and there was live music by a jazz band playing Christmas carols mixed in with pop songs. Very cute. The place is a nice size but the set up is a little weird. There's some sort of back area where there is cooking but there's also some cooking happening in the center area. The waitress was kind and even obliged me when I asked them for a copy of their menu to have as a souvenir. That alone deserves the 5 stars to me. Clean, spacious bathroom. Modern decor. Desperately needed business in the Mott haven area of the south Bronx. I came in for the bottomless brunch with a family member celebrating our birthdays. The staff was very accommodating as mentioned. We ordered the shrimp and grits, seared tuna salad, yogurt with berries (which I see isn't on the menu anymore) and just to be gluttonous we also had a waffle with berries. Everything was fantastic and fresh. I coulda used a little more refreshing on the mimosas but thats ok. I really enjoyed myself here and will be back maybe for happy hour or for dinner one night since I work in the area. It's a shame I didn't about this gem sooner. read more

**My post was somehow removed, so I'm reposting to warn others** Do NOT go here!! I went here last Saturday, and the air conditioner was nor working. I had a reservation and was not given a courtesy call. The had fans everywhere which did NOT help. I was literally melting. The mac and cheese was good and so were the fish tacos. Everything else was just okay. After almost dying of heat exhaustion, the waitress comes over to let us know that the card machine is down. She refers us to their ATM which had a limit so low that it would require us to make 4 transactions to cover the bill. The manager seemed to not care that my account could be shut down for fraud if I made multiple transactions at a random ATM, It was a very horrible experience. read more

(AKA THE MAN IN THE GOLD/BLK SHIRT) I was in this establishment to get a drink and a meal at approx. 9-915pm on 8/25 My party had not arrived and I was standing at the bar with my drink my party texted me and told me they were on their way. With the approval of the host (lovely woman or who I assumed was a host), I put my drink on the middle center table and when I turned around a man with a golden print shirt said "sir we have two people that need more space and they want the table" he then removed my drinks and lifted the table. Mind you, these were two people not four. They just wanted space. Meanwhile we were a party of two that wanted to dine and drink and now didn't have a table because the golden print shirt host wanted to give a table of two more space (note again - they didn't have 2 additional people it was ONLY two people sitting next to the window that needed more space). In this moment my date arrived and the gentleman with the golden print shirt said "thanks for understanding hun". when i asked what other options we had the golden print shirt said "not my jam" - Needless to say we left and we will never be back. read more

First time at this restaurant. Impromptu dinner with hubby and sons. Nice low lighting atmosphere. Great service, good food. I had the salmon, hubby had steak and the boys had burgers. We shared a plate of mac and cheese to sample it. I had a champagne cocktail recommended by the waiter and it was delish! Hubby and sons had soft drinks and the only snafu. For starters we had yummy fried calamari and chips with crazy good guacamole. The mac and cheese was creamy and not gooey. It was good and apparently a favorite. While we waited for our entrees we looked around at all the photos on the wall from Charlie's Angel's, Charlie Chaplan, Charles Bronson and even Charlie the tuna and Charles Manson! It was then that we realized Charlies has pics of Charlies, lol. Very cute. The photos led to a very interesting conversation about Charles Manson. Small place but very busy. As customers left others quickly replaced them. The steak was excellent. The salmon was good - cooked perfectly but could have used a bit more seasoning. The burgers were good. Portions were a good size and we didn't have room for dessert. Total for 5 people came out to $120. I will definitely return to Charlies when I'm in the neighborhood again. read more

I was brought here for a late night b-day outing. Though there was trivia going on by the bar, we opted for a table. The three of us were seated immediately as the establishment was pretty empty. The ambiance was pretty relaxed (maybe because we were basically the only people on the dining side). I enjoyed this simply because crowded restaurants annoy me sometimes. Food- For the most part, the food and drinks were not that great. I ordered some type of honey hot sauce chicken with rosemary fries. The chicken was okay but not something I would order again (not a fan of chicken thighs). The rosemary fries however were pretty good. I also ordered a drink (I forgot the name but it was pink and it had Hennessy in it). That too was okay, but again, I would not order that on a future trip. Service- Our waiter was good for the most part though he seemed distracted for most of the night (not by other tables...as we were the only people dining lol). He did however bring some ice cream over to help me celebrate so that is always a plus in my book. :-) I would probably return to this because it was such a calm environment and I want to try the mac and cheese. read more

I have been coming here for about three years. I have enjoyed plenty of food from this place. I was even able to get a decent meal to go when Covid was in full swing. Now that things are fully open .... they have presented as a quite different place. I called for take out and they told me it was mandatory to order a double order of wings minimum..mmmm keep that. I still ordered after the chef "agree" to make the "smaller" portion... I get there and they were rude and cold.... and raised the prices without notice. I'm pretty sure I'm done. What a shame. My group of ten arrived in New York very late last Thursday. We came in around 10-11PM and Charlies was very accommodating to our large party without a reservation. We were seated right away and was given great service throughout the night. FOOD: 454 Burger: Cooked to perfection, the burger was very juicy with a toasty bun. The fries were okay but the burger itself made up for it. I did not like how overdone the bacon was though. It was too crunchy, it left a burnt feeling on my tongue. Jerk BBQ Ribs: I think the server mentioned you get six ribs and it comes with a sweet potato mash. The ribs were really good, fall off the bone type of deal. Be aware that they are VERY spicy! Which adds a nice kick. Its topped off with some vegetable that I forgot. The Sweet Potato Mash was okay but it was too creamy for my girl friend. Onion Rings: You get a generous amount of fresh onion rings. Very crunchy and some are huge pieces. $1 Oysters: They had $1 oyster deals going on and we have a few dozens to go around. The oysters are fresh and most importantly they were a good decent size. The chefs shucked then fairly fast too. Overall, Charlies was one of the best spots while we were in NY for the weekend. Very nice Gen in the Bronx . First lets start with the ambiance, I love it nice lighting brick face walls and cute bar . The waiters were friendly and didn't B.S you into buying something that's just higher in price . My fiancée had a red sangria which she thought was weak ( her preference) but tasty. We ordered crap cakes as appetizer and they were delicious, soft and savory and just enough as an appetizer should be. For dinner I ordered the salmon dinner with asparagus and beans. It was amazing everything seasoned right and just the right amounts . She had veal with spaghetti which was tender . The only negative was it was a tad bit salty . I would def come back . This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. I met my good friend at this spot and we enjoyed our time together. It was a hole in the wall, not a large restaurant but very quaint. We had calamari for appetizer. My husband had quesadillas and sweet potato fries. My friend had a veggie burger with sweet potato fries. And I had a salad. Let's just say I tasted just about everything. The calamari was fried crispy and delicious. Sweet potato fries are my favorites and these did not disappoint. My house salad was absolutely delicious. Five stars for all great things! First we got a table immediately, our server was patient with us and communicative even when our food seem to be taking longer than usual. It was my first time here and I loved it. Our server was also very attentive and making sure the drinks kept flowing. We did the brunch cocktail flow which is bottomless brunch cocktails for $15--best part you can mix it up. So i started off with a Bloody Mary, then another Bloody Mary, then a greyhound, then three mimosas to finish it up. What a great late night spot for great drinks and unexpectedly delicious food. Just 20 minutes outside of manhattan with pretty available parking, this is a great hot spot for a change of scenery. We walked in in the middle of a trivia game and the host was so welcoming! She reread the questions to us and went over each one so that we could hear and play along. There are bunch of small tables (dark) around the bar and then a really great spot right at the kitchen - I like seeing the movement in the kitchen or bar while casually munching. Great crowd on a random Wednesday - very fun vibe. I'm a fish taco connoisseur (addicted) and though I hardly ever go for the fried/tempura style because it's hard to get one that isn't oily ,these were fried and they were AMAZINGLY delicious. They weren't over oily and the slaw really added a refreshing taste - the tacos were also great, small, bite size and neat enough to eat and continue socializing. I didn't taste the mac and cheese myself but it looked and smelled amazing. They also made a perfect sized, taste, and amount of alcohol drink (I got a martini). Yes, the options are somewhat limited and the place looks very unassuming, but there's something super welcoming and who needs a huge menu when the few things that are on the menu are soooo good. I've been planning to come and have dinner at CBK for sometime now. I know it's popular for local politicians in the South Bronx area. I enjoyed their happy hour selection. I had a whiskey and ginger ale and I must say their drinks were well poured. As far as the food I would suggest more flavor and bigger portions. We started off with the street corn, maybe corn isn't in season right now because it was skimpy kernels on the cob. I wanted to try the salmon but was told I couldn't substitute the mashed potatoes for the tostones. Instead I ordered the fried chicken (big pieces of chicken lacked flavor). I ended up having the tostones with the chicken and the garlic sauce that comes with the tostones was the winner of the evening. It had a charming feel with nice furniture pieces, but the space and decor were worn and some things were in need of repair (esp. in the bathroom).
