We've been going to charlotte's for Christmas for years (more than 8 years). The setting and ambiance was very good as always. In past years there was a Christmas menu but you could order whatever you wanted off the menu. This year was a limited prix fixe menu for $75 per person which included an appetizer and a main entree. The kids menu was $25 for Mac and cheese or chicken fingers. Before even getting to food quality it seemed very overpriced for the selection on the menu. Most of the food was decent but not amazing and certainly not meriting the price. Seafood crepe was the best. Crab cakes were good. Chicken was dry. Lobster Mac and cheese was nothing special. Several people in our group who ordered the roasted strip loin had it served so rare the middle was cold. These people in our group thought it was mostly or totally inedible-These are people who would typically order medium-rare or medium for their meats. Those dishes were sent back to the kitchen and weren't adequately fixed. The waitress just claimed that medium rare is how they are prepared by the chef and didn't seem to have an interest in addressing our concerns. Table was also very wobbly which I would have not been bothered by if it were not for the fact that it was $75 a head. The dessert choices were just mousses for $12 additional. I can't remember the last time I took time to write a negative review but I feel like we were really ripped off. Between the inedible strip loins and chicken, the dog got a $200-300 meal. What a fantastic place. From the first impression upon pulling in the driveway, to entering the vestibule area and bam, it keeps getting better and better. Once inside, the choice of seating areas is perfect. A darkened romantic bar area or the main dining room with killer views. We sat in the main dining room and enjoyed the beautiful view the whole time we were there. Our server was Trisha and she was awesome. This should be a 10 Star review, 5 for Charlotte's and 5 for Trisha and her colleagues on the floor. The food was absolutely incredible. There is a reason there aren't salt and pepper shakers on the tables, because everything was perfectly seasoned from the kitchen. OMG!!! We had a great dinner, dessert and drinks, and great conversation with our server too (Subarus and Challengers...) at no extra charge. Words cannot describe how wonderful Charlotte's Restaurant is! We had my daughter's wedding reception here. Alicia helped us coordinate the event and gave us menu suggestions. From the appetizers to the entrees to the desserts it was 5-star the whole way! The filet mignon, salmon and apple glazed chicken were brought out at the same time and cooked to perfection! Our guests were literally blown away and could not stop complimenting the food! The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating! It's a 3 1/2 hour drive from Syracuse but I can't wait to go back! read more

We were told by a friend to try Charlotte's. So, we did. We arrived there and walked in the front door. At least we think it was the front door. The place was very warm, with an old house smell. We went in anyway. We walked around and decided to sit at the bar. (Thinking it might be the coolest place to sit) The bar was wet and dirty. The waitress said they had a very busy evening, the night before. The waitress was pleasant. We ordered water and 2 glasses of wine. As soon as I took a sip of my water, there was a long, blonde hair on it. (Our waitresses hair) Our waitress apologized, removed it and brought a fresh glass. I asked for a straw. We then ordered soup, salad and fish. The bread arrived, along with another blonde hair!!! Our waitress removed that one too and apologized again. We ate our meal. Nothing was great. Our fish was overcooked and tasted more like chicken. That was enough. We asked for our bill. The waitress comped our glasses of wine in lieu of the extra hairs. We tried it. There is nowhere more amazing than Chatlotte's; it's the whole package -Undeniably amazing food, ambience, comfort, and basically somewhere you will find yourself spending hours of time cuz leaving is just so damn hard... The care, detail and love that the owners and staff put into everything is beyond compare. Whether it's the duck (that goes thru a 3 day process of curing, smoking, and love), seafood ANYTHING, ribeye or short ribs is beyond expectations. The dining area and bar are both comfortable and inviting. Amazingly beautiful grounds, outdoor BBQ pit where you can find yourself transformed into another place and time, this restaurant has everything. Great staff - hugely talented and innovative chef - cozy bar w the a wood fireplace that forces you to take it easy - we can only wish that we could come here every day. We went to charlottes on a rainy Sunday this spring and had an amazing meal with a large and noisy family group. Everything was so delicious! the service was friendly and professional, our waiter looked after all of our needs with a lot great enthusiasm and energy. We were a table of eleven, and we had some noisy boisterous kids with us, but the staff at charlottes was very accommodating..even when one of the kids broke a glass. We all had different things and all the food was quite delicious. We alll particularly enjoyed the truffle fries which were fab. The kids had sone awesome looking chicken sandwiches which disappeared. I had some yummy bean soup and a delightfully refreshing beet salad with herbed goat cheese..yum. We love going to charlottes and will certainly return very soon. read more

The chefs here are first class and know their food. Dining atmosphere is pleasant, and the service is great! I would highly recommend this place for a date or nice place to have dinner with friends and family. Classic cooking and presentation with a european flare, but not afraid to go "global". Beautiful outdoor dining as well, and in the summer when the grill is open be sure to sure to order the bbq chicken or another platter off the grill. The bbq sauce is amazing and the chef is quite passionate about his food! Love this place, and was my home away from home for a long time. read more

I went here for a private, plated dinner after a club event at Orvis. The restaurant was very inviting and warm inside. The server was very helpful and friendly. The passed hors d'ouevres were average, nothing really memorable. The choices for the dinner were a pork osso bucco or a salmon. I chose the pork, and I have to say that the flavors were delicious. I never would have thought to try making it at home with pork, but the flavor added a terrific slant to a traditional veal osso bucco. The mashed potatoes and roasted carrots that came with it were very tasty. My mom got the salmon and she said it was okay, but she couldn't finish. So, after going here for a catered event (which can be tough) I really want to come back for a night out at the restaurant. The bar was cozy, the drinks were well-poured and the food that I had was very good. I'm sure a restaurant meal would easily bump this review to four stars. read more

Excellent staff, food, atmosphere. I've been driving by this place for over a year and was finally able to have dinner here this evening. Our waitress, Shawna, was perfect, friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. I had the beet salad to start, the duckling for the entree. My daughter had the lobster bisque and the seafood crepe. We shared the tiramisu. Too much food for us so we took it to go. We will definitely be back this summer and will make a reservation to sit out side. The restaurant has just the right amount of kitch for me. If I could make one tiny suggestion, the bisque did seem to be slight over seasoned with salt - and we love salt. (Just splitting hairs though.) read more

Charming restaurant with excellent service and delicious food! We started with a butternut squash soup and Ajax truffle fries. Both incredible. I had the salmon with lemon Dijon cream and my husband had the short ribs. Again the entrees did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection. Our server Cameran was friendly and attentive - quick to anticipate our needs. We saved room for a dessert and glad we did. The croissant bread pudding with rum toffee sauce was out of this world. This was take out and we ordered three items one vegetarian mushroom and bean bourguinon and also duck and sausage cassoulet and also deep fried calamari as an appetizer, and for dessert cheesecake. We celebrated our 28th anniversary last night at this wonderful restaurant. From the minute we entered we were warmly greeted by the hostess and the owner. The service was excellent. The presentation of the plates were beautiful and the food superb! The duck was truly one of the best I've ever had. So much attention to detail and flavor. We were so glad that we had room for the crime brûlée. It came with fresh whipped cream and maybe the largest raspberries I have ever seen! We will definitely be revisiting Charlotte's on our next trip to this area. read more

I have eaten at this establishment several times. Recently I stopped with my daughter and a friend on our way back from a trail ride. With horses in tow we were seated immediately outside as requested and the service was spectacular. They didn't flinch at the fact that our trailer full of horses was in the parking lot. There was a private party going on and we still received top notch attentive service. I have never been disappointed by this restaurant. For thanksgiving, most people imagine a warm, fireside meal, laughing with family, sipping on wine- the works. Unfortunately for my family and I, we had an unimaginably awful experience at this so-called establishment. To begin, we walked in only to not be greeted by anybody. We stood stupidly, idly, for a good 5 minutes, then proceeded to hang up our own jackets, still twiddling our thumbs. Finally, WE have to approach a server to seat us, who then tells us to seat ourselves. Not ideal, but fine. We could afford to look past it for now because we were hungry and hopeful. After seating ourselves, the same waiter comes back to serve us warm water. My mother asks for ice, he complies, and the wait began. Nobody offered us drinks, bread, appetizers, nothing. My twin has to approach the vacant host to get a waiter to serve us. He apologizes and and a waitress arrives at our table 5 minutes later. She informs us of the set up for the night- drinks, soup, and then buffet (one would think that there would be plentiful service under these conditions). My Father asks for the wine list, and makes headway in memorizing a vast portion of it, considering NOBODY came to our table from that point on. The look on my parents faces was more than angry- it was utter disappointment, crestfallen. My family is always apart and this was one of the few occasions during the year we could get together and be jovial, a wonderful rarity for us all. As my parents walked out, my twin felt responsible for taking care of the issue at hand- she wanted to ensure that the restaurant would be held responsible for ruining our holiday and felt compelled to address the host. That was not nearly sufficient enough. Perhaps this was his own ineptitude as a host, but it was really the manager that did it in for my sister. After listing everything that had gone wrong the minute we entered the restaurant, she was apologetic but useless. She even had the audacity to say "Well, I'm happy, we're all happy (referring to her staff and other restaurant goers, which judging by other reviews and the grimaces across the faces of her servers is debatable)," in response to when my sister asserted that we had been so unhappy and dissatisfied with our experience there. This only incited my sister, and the manager responded this by grabbing her hand and pleading with her to stay so that she may give us 50% off the meal. But we walked out and made our own superior Thanksgiving meal thanks to my wonderfully talented parents. I would never waste my time or your time writing a review this long, but I also have never experienced such inane behavior and appalling service. Not to mention, the food is mediocre at best! We resorted to this reservation only because the far better places in Millbrook were booked. So moral of this story? If you want a delicious meal, great service, and strive to preserve even the tiniest shred of self-respect, do yourselves a favor and avoid the grievousness that is Charlotte's. read more

I have been to Charlotte's twice and both times my family and I liked it. We enjoyed strolling outside and the nice rustic atmosphere inside with the fireplace. Review based on 2017 Mother's Day brunch. Very much enjoyed the experience. Food was best described as a scand0-continental buffet. Dill, rock shrimp and lingonberries all made appearances. The prime rib was great. Dessert spread was largely small bites -- appreciated after a big meal as it allowed us all to try different things. My best friend recently got married here and it was fantastic! I helped direct the ceremony and was very pleased with the support and communication we experienced in working with the staff - the owner, chef, and servers were all incredibly accommodating and friendly and easy to work with. I wasn't involved in the monetary side of things, but I believe they are also very reasonable compared to other venues in the area. We had an outdoor ceremony followed by cocktails (wine, beer, and spritzers) - the scenery was outstanding and the hors d'oeuvres were delicious. We later moved inside for the reception and dinner was just as good. If you're seeking a venue for a small wedding that offers a charming balance of formal and casual then I highly recommend Charlotte's. read more

Ate here (again) this past Sunday evening. I had the calamari app. It was crispy but (I think) they need to slice the calamari into larger slices if they are going to cook it so crispy. (Go to Black Bear & try their calamari.) I very much like the dressing they serve on their salad greens. Couldn't decide on the 1/2 duck or osso bucco. I was told the osso bucco will be on the menu for a while so I had the duck with a tea flavored glaze. The duck was served with au gratin potatoes with no taste of Gruyere...even though I am not a fan of Gruyere, I would have liked to taste a bit of it. The veggies were great; spinach, string beans carrots & it appeared to be little round balls of zucchini & yellow squash. Had the bread pudding for dessert. My Boyfriend booked a reservation for dinner on a Saturday night to celebrate my birthday. We could not have been more disappointed with our experience. The food quality is hardly better than a frozen meal you would heat up in the microwave, and is horribly overpriced. This restaurant is quite literally highway robbery. The ambience, decoration, and food quality abysmal. Their only saving grace is the wine menu which features exclusively wine from the amazing local vineyard "Millbrook Winery and Vineyard." Even after sending back an entrée and expressing dissatisfaction with our food, we were charged for the entire meal (about $200). Save your money and stomach and dignity. Do not dine at Charlotte's, make a reservation in Rhinebeck or Beacon. The drive is worth it to avoid this place. read more

I spent a long time researching restaurants in the area for my girlfriend's birthday and was surprised by the rating given to charlottes. It's clear that the high prices are only justified by its remoteness as the food hardly lived up to expectation. While the appetizers were passable, the main courses were exceedingly bland. We sent back the duck for being all but salted jerky, and then switched to the seafood crepes. The staff could clearly see they had hardly been touched but charged us for that meal anyway. I recently moved to Dutchess County and discovered a gem of a restaurant. I was initially motivated to dine at Charlotte's because of the spectacular views and gardens. The setting is exquisite, and the food is exquisitely delicious. The first time I went, I ordered an artichoke salad to start and red snapper surrounded by a medley of vegetables. MY husband had the corn-meal dregged calamari and a scrumptious loin of pork with apples and a delicious sauce, We returned a week later to find one of my favorite cold summer soups on the menu: Chilled Avocado Soup. My husband prepares this at home, but nothing prepared me for the scrumptious soup I was served. It was more delicious than my husband's (he took no offense at my saying this). I followed this appetizer with a roasted beet and goat cheese salad. Many restaurants serve this salad, but none as delicious as this -- even Manhattan restaurants where I dine. The entree was superb: seafood crepes, with large chunks of lobster. My mouth watering, I couldn't wait to return for my birthday a week later. I was fantasizing about the Chilled Avocado Soup all week. But alas. The menu changes daily and the chilled soup offerings were Gazpacho, which my husband ordered and a chilled Beet soup with Creme Freche, which I ordered. It was excellent, but not quite as good as The Chilled Avocado Soup, which is reason enough to return. I told the waitress that I would call and the next time the chilled Avocado Soup is on the menu, I would return. It's worth the 25 minute drive on glorious country roads surrounded by mountains and meadows, dairy and horse farms if that were the only item on the menu. That, and the view! read more

My wife and I have gone to Charlotte's many times and keep coming back because the food is very good. this past weekend was no different and the food was fabulous. I was however completely disappointed with the new tablet payment method. I was presented with an electronic tablet with 3 choices for tips 20% , 25% & (30% ?). I'm sure there was a way to select a different tip percentage , but I didn't have my reading glasses and the only thing you can see are the large predetermined percentages. I normally tip 15 % and was very annoyed that I felt pressured into giving a 20 % tip. ( The waitress stood there waiting for me to make a selection rather than allow me time/ space to figure it out ). I reluctantly pressed the 20% tip button because I didn't want to have that discussion in front of my kids and the other patrons. Shame on me, that will not happen again... I'm surprised that a nice restaurant like Charlotte's would make a good, continued customer feel obligated to leave a greater tip than normal. Left a bad taste after a really tasty meal. read more

My husband and I returned for our second visit to Charlotte's and were not disappointed. The atmosphere is very comfortable and warm. We enjoyed being able to sit by the fire and enjoyed the festive decorations. The homemade gnocchi in roasted pepper cream sauce was absolutely wonderful! The best I've ever had. I brought my girlfriend here to try something out of Manhattan for a change. There's certainly a lot more room here than a NYC restaurant and we were greeted like we were old friends. That set the tone for our meal. My gf and ordered one seafood dish and I ordered one meat dish and we shared so we could sample both. Same with the appetizers (we might have ordered too much but we have a happy doggy bag). We can't wait to go back to try out a few more dishes. Maybe next Friday if we're lucky. read more

Our visit here started off great. The hostess offered to light the fire in the bar fireplace and our waiter was attentive (if at times over-attentive). Unfortunately, the gnocci was completely over salted and tasted as if the cream was going bad. Dissappointed, because I could tell that it would've been delicious if it weren't for those overbearing bad flavors, I sent it back after TWO bites. My stomach was instantly off - feeling as if I was going to be sick. I wasn't offered anything else and I didn't take any of the poorly made dish home. My husband finished his wine and we each had a delicious cup of coffee. When the bill came, I was surprised to see that we were charged the full $24/28 for the gnocci! I mentioned it to the waiter and he said (and I quote) "You don't want to pay for the gnocci." Really? Why would I want to pay for a dish from which I had two bites and then promptly sent back? I don't make a habit of sending back food, but I do have many friends and we all talk about our dining experiences. I have NEVER heard of a restaurant charging for a meal that was sent back, especially with so little gone from the plate. The waiter returned and said that he checked with the chef and the cream was fine and the dish tasted good to him. I started to become enlightened to this place's approach to customer service. My husband asked the waiter to send over the owner. When she arrived, I was told that 'other people had it tonight' and 'the chef said it was fine' so I had to at least pay half. At that, our bill was over $70 and we didn't have any other entrees!! I believe they treated us differently because we were from out of town, because they certainly had no trouble serving the already-intoxicated local group at the bar. Not only will I not return to eat there, but I'll make it my mission to tell everyone to whom I recommend Millbrook to avoid your restaurant like the plague. Shame on you Charlotte.
