In n Out is fair ,,, However I've reached my peak w/ them since I've had them more than many fingers could count . It was a Tuesday night ,,, Drove to Benecia looking for food to eat on 1st St . Thanking God Sailer Jack's was closed because I never would've found this jewel . So we walked down a few yards, saw the tannery building . Inside was this cute American food joint called CHAR's Hot Dogs ... It's a place where they make different types of burgers ( ANGUS BEEF ) , Hot dogs , Sandwiches , Fries , Onion Rings , Fried Zucchini etc etc ... This night my partner and I ordered 2 cheeseburgers loaded w/ cheddar cheese and a half order of fries ... Ladies & Gentleman CHAR's won me over ... Eureka,,, I've finally found a place with quality burgers etc and quality service ... The lady who took our order was extremely kind and polite. We waited at a table w/ a red & white checkerboard table cloth ... Our food was ready in 10 mins ... I gave compliment to the lady who took our order . She told us she hand packs each Pattie every morning to assure a quality tasting burger ... DEFINITELY returning when I have cravings for a American food joint . So glad we found this place. I had a single but my husband got the double bacon cheeseburger. OMG talk about a burger with thick bacon and delicious garlic fries (like lots of it). Loved this spot! Their space may be small but they are quickly and efficiently delving out large amounts of quality burgers and dogs! Greeted with a smile, the choices are vast, so I went with a classic bacon cheeseburger with pickles added, and fries. My honey ordered the western burger with a side of fried pickles. We went and explored the shopping nearby while our food was being prepped, very cool jewelry and estate finds at the end of the hall! Our burgers were fresh, juicy, the bacon crisp and flavorful, and the fries were well salted (this is major points from me!). We were in benicia for the the day. I needed a place to eat that was dog friendly. This restaurant had good reviews,so I decided to give it a try. We ended up finding a table outside in front of the restaurant. The patio was crowded. As per the name, the menu consist of hot dogs and hamburgers. We ordered a cheese burger and a bacon cheeseburger. Also got a full size fries.(It's really large, probably should have ordered a half) The burgers were large,but definitely worth the price. The burgers were a bit over cooked. But I understand that for safety reasons most places thoughly cook the hamburgers. I prefer a moist juicy burger. The fries were steaming hot and had a nice coating of salt. The burgers were fine but not really outstanding. read more

My wife and I live just down the street from Char's and we've been coming here for many years after a short stroll around downtown. It's a small cozy and casual bistro tucked in our quaint little town and close to the water. My favorites are their double cheeseburger, cheeseburger bowl, and steak sandwich. My wife enjoys their Patty Melt and we always order garlic fries and/or onion rings on the side. Since it is not on their daily menu, we would also often check ahead of time if they have their Reuben or Pastrami sandwich which we always talk about and look forward to having. Let me start by telling you about the food. OMG...the Swiss and Mushroom burger with grilled onions is what my boyfriend and I come here for with garlic fries. It is so yummy and juicy. You must come and give this place a try. Dominique and Kim the ladies that is there for the most part is so, so nice and have great customer service. I came in after this place being recommended on Yelp. I ordered the California Coney and a cup of chili. The hotdogs was loaded with all the fixings. It was very good. The chili was average. The only reason for deducting a star was because of the price. I understand that costs have increased over the past few years, but at just about $9 for a hotdog is a little high. They are all beef which I prefer. Maybe I'm just being a little cheap today. I will go back though. The service was friendly and quick. Kudos to Char's for their vegetarian options. The caprese grilled cheese on sourdough with tomato, pesto, avocado, and balsamic glaze. Their regular and sweet potato fries are so good. They have a regular grilled cheese and two kinds of vegetarian sausages. I'll try them next because now I know I can get sauerkraut on them. Now when my friends say they want a burger, I'm comfortable suggesting Char's since there are real, and good, vegetarian options. Lots of different choices of hot dog and burger toppings. I got the polish sausage with everything and added kraut. Really tasty. Hubby ordered the Chicago and he inhaled it! This review is late one. We decided to try this place out since it has been around for a long time. It's located in the Tannery building and easy to find Once we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and the place was pretty empty. Once we placed our order a hot dog and polish dog with all the fixings and 50/50 of fries and onion rings the tables started to fill up quickly. The server bought our food to the table and it was a good snack. We enjoyed everything except the onion rings were cooked a little too long for our liking.
