We had two major problems with this meal: it took over three hours, and my steak was massively undercooked. Still, I had some fun at this meal, so I'll give it two stars instead of one. By the end of the meal, there were many complaints and jokes in our group about how long it was taking. There were also jokes about my "medium-well" steak that was approximately rare. One person in our group said it was the worst meal he'd had in 10 years. There was no obvious way to change the recommended 18% gratuity for our group when we got the bill. We weren't that comfortable either: I was wearing all cotton, and shorts, but my seat must have been polyester because I was sweating in those shorts by the end of the meal. My wife also said it seemed crowded. Also, a table for more than 4 or 6 (we had 8) should be round, in my opinion, or conversation is hard. If we come back, we might have more fun as a couple or group of four with a window-side table. The view looked good, especially after dark, but I had to turn around to see it (there probably shouldn't be seats facing the back in a view-centric restaurant like this). Our server seemed fine: I assume it was the kitchen that was slowing things down. Even our lava cakes took a long time to come, though we'd ordered them with the rest of our meal. After I pointed out that my steak was undercooked, but I didn't want to wait for it to be reheated, the manager came over and apologized, but there was no discount on the bill. Given how long it took to get our desserts, I might as well have sent it back as soon as I noticed it was undercooked. It's a fairly expensive restaurant, but my wife and I shared a $59 "chart your course" prix fixe meal (my wife doesn't have a big appetite), which seemed like a moderate-cost choice. We started with a cup of the lobster bisque. It was heavier on the sherry than any I've had before, so it was a below-average example to me (though with some nice bits of lobster in it). Two of the women tasted it as well, and didn't like the strong flavor at all. We actually got the complimentary bread later than the appetizers. It was my favorite part of the meal: I do like good bread and butter in a restaurant. The butter was good: salty and room-temperature (it was whipped, though I don't know that that's an advantage). The breads were warm. I liked the white roll, and rather liked the sweet brown one as too. I tasted a couple of shared appetizers as well. The Kim Chee calamari lived up to its reputation, in my opinion: superior to the usual red-sauce calamari. I like that it also had some fried vegetables in it. It's sharing-sized. I'd get it again. The bruschetta wasn't typical: it had a whipped herb ricotta spread and peeled mini tomatoes. I rather liked it, but it won't convert me to a bruschetta fan. Our main was the chimichurri steak. It was an 8-ounce sirloin with four large shrimp. At first I liked the steak, as I seem to have gotten the more well-done pieces. Shortly, however, I noticed it was massively undercooked: red with a bit of brown on the outside. There were jokes about "I saw it move." The shrimp were pretty plain; they should have done better. The dish came with mashed potatoes, but no vegetables. I really don't want to eat a main course without vegetables. Adding a vegetable side would have been another $10-13. Or dessert was their most famous dish: lava cake, topped with ice cream. I was disappointed: it wasn't as good as the best lava cakes I've had. It was drier, and with less of a molten-chocolate interior (just moist, really). The best part was probably the ice cream on top. Two people at my table said they like two different types of ice cream we got. Our waitress said they're made in-house. We got the chocolate-peanut butter ice cream, and it was good. I wasn't told, however, when they asked for my ice cream choice, that there was a $1 upcharge for it. If I came again, I'd want a window-side seat. Their most-recommended dishes are: appetizers: the Kim Chee calamari (get again, to share) and lobster bisque (skip); mains: macadamia mahi and prime rib (no vegetables with it either, so add a side); and lava cake (might get again, or try the mud pie). They have an early-dining menu, which looks like a good value, or the happy-hour menu as well. I doubt I'd return unless someone else was paying, however. read more

I went for a friend's birthday with a group of 10. We arrived a bit early so we had a drink at the bar, and were sat at our table shortly before our reservation time. The staff, including the bartender were all very friendly, and the food was amazing. They went above and beyond in my opinion, adding the birthday girl's name to the top of the menu. It added a little pop and made it extra special for her. Our group had a really great time and I cannot wait to take my BF back. The food though, yuuum! There is a tv for sporting events. Everything thing was delicious for the most part! The salmon dish topped with crab could have used a bit more salt/seasoning and I just am not a fan of the coconut rice but my bf loved it. We were lucky enough to have an outdoor facing booth at The Chart House and the amazing Priscilla as our server she got us this menu with ease and gave us to touch a quality that we really wanted and needed for our Saturday night. Dinner martinis are strong here so soften them with iced tea or water. The food is also fantastic. A large group of chefs work very hard to make everything on your plate, exquisite to the eye as well as the stomach. We cannot wait to come back when we return to Jacksonville next year. We celebrate our 5 year anniversary by having dinner at the Chart House overlooking the St John's River. The salad bar offered a variety of salad options with fresh fruit and vegetables. I enjoyed the seared salmon did not care for the mango rice was hard maybe not cooked all the way. My husband enjoyed steak and shrimp with mashed potatoes. Stefanie was a great server. Chart House is absolutely stunning -- the views, the vibe, the whole atmosphere had me thinking this appetizer was about to be a hit. But unfortunately...the calamari did not get the memo. The dish came out already drenched in sauce, which instantly took away any chance of crispiness. Instead of that light crunch you hope for, everything was a little chewy and soggy, and the sauce kind of overwhelmed the whole plate. Honestly, it looked more like a tossed stir-fry than a classic calamari appetizer. Beautiful restaurant, yes. Gorgeous ambiance, absolutely. But this calamari? Not their strongest moment. This is a Happy Hour review, as I have never had dinner here. However, I have been here for happy hour several times. It's a go to spot for me, but I have found it to be hit and miss at different times. First - you can't beat the view, as it overlooks the river. How spectacular! If you are lucky to snag a seat in the lounge during happy hour, there is a great selection of drinks and food at reasonable prices. In fact, their selection is better than most places for happy hour. My favorite is the lettuce wraps. I've also tried the seared ahi nachos and the coconut crunchy shrimp - all delicious. On a recent Friday night, they were out of the lettuce wraps (surprising, given it was early on a Friday night and you would think they would be prepared for a crowd). I tried the Southwestern Crispy Avocado with Shrimp Ceviche and Tropical Fruit. It was delicious, but I could not find a single bit of shrimp (even tiny pieces), despite the promise of shrimp ceviche. I also tried the Kim Chee Calamari - very tasty, but we were not sure where the Kim Chee was in this dish. I enjoyed both dishes, but I can't say they were as described on the menu. I've been here when everything has gone perfectly well - including the service (shout out to Brady, who is attentive and professional and normally works the tables on the restaurant side). In fact, I have been amazed at how well the wait staff can handle a large crowd and I think that is usually the case. However, I also experienced sitting at the bar and waiting 1.5 hours (no exaggeration) for an appetizer than never arrived despite numerous promises and apologies from the bartender. We eventually got the check adjusted and left hungry. I hadn't mentioned it until now since I figured it was a one time thing. The good experiences will keep me coming back here and hopefully the track record will remain on the positive side. read more

I've wanted to go to the chart house for years. I had to go downtown early weekday evening and decided to stop in for happy hour with a few friends. The chart house has a nice large parking lot. The building reminds me of an aquarium with its stone and concrete and rounded walls. We went right to the bar area. It was quite crowded, but we managed to grab a small high top for four. This place has beautiful views of the water, but unfortunately, you can't see them when sitting in the bar area. I did take a walk around the restaurant and I saw a very nice salad bar in the middle of the restaurant. I was also able to see the seating arrangements at the window where you can take advantage of the view. I'm keeping that area in mind from my next visit. Happy hour here last for several hours so there's no need to rush. It took a while for a server to recognize us but once he did, we received excellent service. Our drinks and food were excellent, but the high top tables are very tight. So if you order more than two items and drinks it's really cramped. My vodka martini with blue cheese olives was delicious. I actually asked the server if I could have one or two more and he told me they didn't have enough because they stuffed them themselves. I thought this was kind of a weird answer because I've always asked for extra blue cheese olives wherever I go, and I have never heard an answer like this . Perhaps he could've scrounged up one more olive? Chart House had many specials at happy hour which included yummy truffle fries served in an upright cone basket. We also had coconut shrimp & some beef sliders as well as, warm spinach dip. The spinach dip was the only disappointment and I would not order it again. First let me start with Taylor our server was fantastic. Prompt, polite, friendly - he was spot on. The ambiance was as we remembered it but with a few updates. They kept the same vibe and Chart house has been here since 1982 so it's no accident they are successful. For a Wednesday night, while it wasn't full, it was still pretty busy. We came to experience the Mo-better together November (2024) special. The Chart House family is teaming up with Movember Foundation to support men's health. $5 from every meal will be donated to Movember Foundation. For $90, you choose an appetizer, entree, and side to share, then you finish with a shared chocolate lava cake with freshly made home made ice cream. They ask you what flavor from vanilla, pumpkin, vanilla, or maple pecan when you order because they have to make it when it's ready to be served. We were skeptical but took a chance at this meal and let me tell you we were pleasantly surprised. We did decide to add on the salad bar which for me was a no brainer. Ample options for building a salad, but also constructed Caesar salad available on the bar. Also had some fruit options and a caviar section which I enjoyed. We also had some cocktails and the meal was accompanied by complimentary bread. Pictured is my chocolate and bourbon old fashioned. Our choice of the raw bar appetizer came with 4 oysters, 4 extra large cocktail shrimp, and I would estimate about a 2 oz portion of poke. Our entree' was a filet mignon and shrimp skewer which arrived on a hanging skewer presentation and served table side. Probably 8 oz filet and 4 jumbo shrimp. The side we chose was smashed fingerlings which we both had a serving each. The chocolate lava cake was a great finish. I did take home some filet, shrimp, and fingerlings for lunch tomorrow so serving sizes were more than adequate. Kudos to Chart House for keeping it going strong! read more

The design/architecture is very impressive, and the river view is lovely. We tried the mojito flight for two - amazing! There was a little hiccup with our orders, but it was corrected far better than necessary. The salad bar had a few selections I couldn't try due to a raw onion sensitivity, but the items I could enjoy were delicious- I've never had such ripe fresh mango from a salad bar before.. The bread service was fresh and warm - so delightful. The food was excellent, and Taylor provided excellent service. My friend and I went to the Chart House on a show night, which created complications. Although we got there on time, because of some traffic issues, some of the staff had run late so although we gad 5:30pm reservations we didn't get to our table until close to six. We ordered some wine, which took a while; thankfully, we got some very good bread while we waited. We did end up ordering the chocolate lava cake at around 6:09 PM thinking we would have time to enjoy it before we had to leave but we didn't get our food until after 6:30 so we had to cancel the lava cake in order to get to our 7 o'clock show in time. The staff was amazing, the food was good, but I think I would probably not do the Chart House on a show night and if I did, I would make sure to be there at least two hours before the show instead of an hour and a half. The food we did have was very good. I was just sad that I didn't get to enjoy it with the stress of getting to our show on time. Great ambiance on the river. This has been a Jacksonville staple for a long time. We first visited back in the 80's as a very special occasion restaurant. Our meal here unfortunately became a let down for my dad's birthday dinner. We're from out of town, and Chart House had been recommended to me. With it having views of the river, this was a top pick for us, but we wish we had gone somewhere else. Our waitress, Connie, disappeared for long periods of time and really didn't have much of a personality - we asked her to take a group picture and she said she'd be back to take it, then didn't return until it was time to drop off the food, so we grabbed a different waitress who gladly took it for us. The salad bar was over priced, the selection wasn't great, and the Caesar salad was soggy because the dressing was already on it. The other appetizers, entrees, and drinks were overall good, but dessert was honestly an embarrassment. The mini lava cake that came with my prix fixe meal wasn't warm at all (they said they needed a half hour notice on their lava cakes - is it to defrost from frozen?? Where was the lava?), and my dad, whose birthday we were celebrating, chose the Creme Brûlée tasting. After my lava cake showed up, Connie came back to inform him they were out, but he was able to do a normal Creme Brûlée. He regretted ordering that as it wasn't even cooked thoroughly and was greasy. We sent it back because we didn't want him eating uncooked egg and Connie even recognized it wasn't right. We also were disappointed that they didn't even put a candle in his crème brûlée since they knew we were there for his birthday and we even notated it on the reservation. She also forgot my husband's espresso. To top it off, the lights kept flickering and it was very annoying. We received this gift for this wine dinner from our son and his bride. We arrived and were greeted with smiling faces and champagne. Our host, Julia, also greeted us and was the rep for Frank Family Vineyards in Napa Valley, CA. The table was elegantly set with beautiful glassware and wine glasses. Each course was a wonderful sight for the eyes and also tasted amazing. Chef , Brad Elledge, came out several times to describe his masterpiece to us all. We were seated @ a table for 20 and got to mingle and get to know our fellow diners which was delightful. Wines were perfectly paired with the entrees. I will say they only do 3oz pours and no refills for one you may have liked. They really should let you have at least one extra serving of your favorite. Cost per person is $149 w/o tip. Went before the JT concert last night. We did happy hour at the bar area. Super solid and a very good deal for the items. We ordered 2 kinds of sliders, spin dip, lettuce wraps and meatballs one of us also go the salad bar and we had 1 happy hour drink and 1 non happy hour drink. Other than fighting for your own seat service was quick and food was good and hot. The only disappointing thing was the lava cake that says it take 30 min to prepare and it came out with no lava but the peanut butter ice cream was delish. Nestled right by the river, chart house has been an upscale staple to Jacksonville for a long time. It sits right near the river and sets the dining experience during the day and especially at night. We started off with crab cake and Kimchee calamari which was superb. cooked just right crisp on the outside and not rubbery. Lobster mosque was also so creamy and flavored well. I also got the coconut crunchy shrimp. They had a special and we were celebrating my mom's birthday so there was a chart your course where you can pick any of the three from starter soup or salad which mom had the Cesar salad and the shrimp pasta which was so yummy and mini lava cake. Apart from everything being so delish they added ice cream with the dessert. Everything was on point. Service was amazing and the waiter was so prompt with our drinks and informative. Really like this spot for fresh seafood. Came here on Saturday night on Ga/Fl weekend without a reservation and sat right down. Received excellent service. The atmosphere is very nice, upscale and on the water. With a reservation I imagine you can get a really nice seat with a view. I ordered the Cajun swordfish and it was excellent! Also got the salad bar add on, which was a nice touch considering you don't see a lot of salad bars anymore. A meal for two without alcohol ran me about $175. Worth it! read more

Went here for our anniversary and had a great dinner and experience. We had a great seat at the window with a water view. Our server was excellent and really took care of us! We started with the whipped ricotta and meatballs. It was 3 large meatballs and they really had great flavor. It was a great choice. I went for the prime rib which they are known for and my wife got the Key West grouper but subbed in Mahi for the grouper. She loved the sticky rice and the pineapple habanero butter. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and my wife loved it to as I ate some of the Mahi as well. We did add some grilled shrimp which was so flavorful! We also got some creamed spinach which was probably the best we have had. Our server surprised us with a slice of mud pie for our anniversary. We were already full but have to admit that we ate the whole thing! They have a Farmers Bar for an extra cost that is a salad bar, fruit bar, etc but we did not eat from that (it did look good). I visited Chart Hours for their happy hour. It was crowded for a Thursday. The bar area was packed, but we were able to grab a table next to the bar and still participate in happy hour. It seemed like our waiter was the only one assigned to the bar and adjacent area. It took over 15 minutes for us to be acknowledged. We were able to place our drink and food orders which sped up the process. I ordered the lobster tartare, bang bang shrimp, parmesan truffle fries, and mango mojito. The lobster tartare was the first to arrive. The tartar was alright, but once you paired it with the buttered toast that accompanied the dish, it took the item to the next level. That was my favorite item of the evening. The bang bang shrimp arrived next. It had a combination of the traditional bang bang sauce and hot sauce. The hot sauce was powerful making it hard for me to eat. This was my least favorite dish. The truffle fries were the last dish to arrive. They lacked the truffle flavor and crispness that normally come with fries. They were just alright. The mango mojito was very refreshing. The mango flavor really showed throughout the drink and easily one of the top seasonal drinks on the menu. I've had some good experiences at Chart House and will give them another try. The low lighting where we sat made it somewhat hard to really see, especially compared to other areas of the restaurant where the lights were actually a soft bright (if that makes sense). Food was delicious but I do feel like an additional side dish should've came with my me entree, the plate just seemed empty.
