This is a hidden gem of a restaurant and bar in the Churchill hotel. They have a nice breakfast in the morning in a quiet dining room. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. Tonight we had some wine and appetizers and burgers in the bar area. The food was delicious and priced reasonably as well. Service was excellent. It's not often that you find a restaurant in your hotel that is both delicious and reasonably priced. We enjoyed the experience very much as well as the convenience of a place to eat inside our hotel. read more

Restaurant and bar for the Churchill Hotel on Connecticut Ave, just up from the Hilton. Comfortable and open seating with couches and chairs. Locals got flyers saying specials for locals, but I forgot to bring the flyer and the bartender hadn't heard about any special deals. I stay a block up from the hotel and decided to try it. The menu was good with separate food and dessert menu. No drink menu. The watermelon martini was excellent, and the chicken wings were crispy and a nice size. Service was spotty, but it was later in the evening. Conference going on in the hotel. Overall good experience, comfortable place and the food was good. Prices were a bit high with martinis running 15 dollars. Worth eating here if someone else is paying. read more

Glad this bar was there for us after s long fat traveling to DC. Friendly bartenders, a nice atmosphere, strong drinks, and good bar food. A better beer selection would be a welcome addition. Chartwell Grill is located in the Churchill Hotel, north of Dupont Circle. (I previously reviewed the Churchill, which has since undergone a renovation. I don't think it really needed it because it was beautiful before! Anyway, I digress...) A friend and I were looking to meet for some quiet, late night girl talk, a snack or two and maybe a cocktail. I chose Chartwell because I assumed it would not be busy on a weeknight and we would be able to talk without distraction. Plus, it was kind of a nostalgic visit, as my wedding was staged at Churchill. It's a warm space, with a variety of comfortable seating: a dining area with tables and chairs, booths with pillows, big leather couches, wing chairs and a small bar. The bartender was super friendly as he invited us to sit wherever we liked. He assumed we were tourists (neither of us are) and chatted a few minutes while he took our drink orders. I think he offered us something complementary since we were "neighbors". I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I told him the kinds of drinks I liked and told him to surprise me. He did! With a fruity cocktail that would have knocked me on my bottom if I'd had a second. Shortly thereafter, our server appeared to take our order. We'd been so busy chatting that we hadn't even looked at the menu. We asked her to come back. When she returned, I had questions about the menu, which she couldn't answer. That's okay, but I had to prompt her to go find out the answer. I ended up just getting sliders, which were very tasty, and my friend ordered the quesadilla, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The server didn't come back for awhile after that. I thought that maybe she had gone home because it was so late. But the bartender got her, we received our bill (nothing complementary.) I thought the prices were reasonable, especially for a DC hotel. Drinks were under $10 and the apps were right around the same. Not a bad meal, that's for sure! After walking around all week and not wanting to walk too much for dinner, someone suggested we try the restaurant here. The Chartwell is located off the main lobby area of the Churchill Hotel, where we stayed. I must say, after passing this place several times a day, it always looked empty, but clean. I had walked in once to check out the dining area and noticed there was a small bar hidden behind the front desk wall, so I decided I wanted to check that out at least once! Before dinner, I snuck down to the bar and enjoyed an ice cold beer, and the Bartender (sorry, can't remember his name) was one of the nicest people I met while in D.C. We chatted for a little bit until my friends showed up, during which time he told me about the many different places to visit while here. He then told me he would be our waiter for the evening! The dining room was empty so we had our choice of tables, and after looking over the menu, I began to think I may regret this place. But, after ordering (~ NY Strip Grilled NY Strip steak, roasted fingerling potatoes, side of sautéed spinach and mushrooms) and getting my meal, I must say, this steak and all of the sides were extremely delicious! All of my friends said they enjoyed their meals as well. At first, looking at the meal, I thought I would have to order 2 plates, as the portion was smaller than I expected, but somehow, that portion was perfect and I left satisfied but not overly stuffed! Throughout our meal, our Bartender/Waiter checked on us occasionally to make sure we were doing well. A good sign of a good Server is someone who checks on you but not too frequently or not at all. This guy knew what he was doing. Overall, I would say this place is a hidden gem! If you're ever in Washington D.C. and looking for recommendations of places to eat, go off the beaten path and try this place for dinner or breakfast (they aren't open for lunch). Terrific menu and service. The only thing missing are more people. Maybe I visited too early or on a slow evening. This place has charm, an outstanding selection of seating, an appetizing menu and quality cutlery. My department ate here for kind of a "working" lunch, and it was just right. This restaurant is attached to the Churchill Hotel, and is not too formal or too casual. The lunch menu was really nice, and included soups (French Onion, Tomato bisque, Chowder?), salads, and various sandwiches and lunch-portion entrees. I had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, and it came with french fries and a small salad with house vinaigrette. The sandwich had a real chicken breast, with a delicious whole-grain mustard. It was on a soft whole-grain ciabatta-type bread that was soft and flavorful. The french fries were great--they actually tasted so similar to McDonald's fries that it was weird...good weird. My colleagues had the French Onion and Tomato Bisque, which they enjoyed, but all of them did add salt and/or pepper. They also had the club sandwich (looked super fresh), crab cake, and Caesar salad. No one had any complaints. Now the service was really weird. The server that was helping us was very...uncouth? He was speaking very loud and quickly, and it kind of felt like the service you'd get at a diner or bar, not a quiet restaurant. At one point my boss asked a question, and the server answered it, but as he was walking away, and he didn't bother to turn around to do it! The service was very distracting during our lunch meeting, and actually made us stop and laugh a few times. Funny, but not *funny* funny...if you know what I mean. Despite weirdo waiters, I would definitely go back here for lunch...it seems kind of like a hidden gem in the area. Dupont restaurants can be a zoo at lunchtime, and this place wasn't. We first tried to eat lunch at the Hilton across the street, but that place was beyond zoo...it was utter chaos! Small, quiet, and nothing "special". I've stopped in here a few times this weekend and have only seen 1 employee, although I haven't seen many customers, and I haven't had to wait for service either. I was the only one at the place on a Sunday afternoon. I had the turkey panini which was good. The bartender/server (he was the only one working) did a great job of checking on me but keeping his space. Good food and good service. One of the worst hotel restaurant food I had. The quesailla was bad, and the "salad" it supposedly to come with it was simply a few leaves (litterally, less than 10 leaves). The environment was a bit outdated. Given the number of great restaurants down the street near DuPont Circle and on 18th street, I will certainly not return. read more

We stayed at hotel and were reluctant to eat here for the first day as we are near a vibrant food district- DuPont circle. Then- we were tired after a full day and tried it. Delicious. Some of the best crusty bread that we have had for a week of vacation. And- the espresso was simply perfect. Other meals were also good and well priced. Thank you! read more

I stayed at the Churchill for one night this weekend, and ate dinner, breakfast and then lunch at the Chartwell Grill. All of the food was amazing - for dinner, I got the beef tips and my boyfriend got the roasted chicken. The beef tips were yummy but the portion was really small for 25 dollars. There were only 5 or 6 beef tips and then there were onions and mushrooms in a sauce, with 2 or 3 fingerling potatoes. I didn't like the potatoes at all but the tips were good, just a little overpriced. As for my boyfriend's meal, his was $20 and he got a generous serving of mashed potatoes, asparagus and a large chicken that was seasoned perfectly. Our waiter was wonderful and it was a great experience. We then had dessert, getting the chocolate cake and the apple tart - both delicious. The breakfast is also great, I got an omelet that was one of the best I've ever had. The potatoes aren't great, but I'd still recommend the breakfast. We then got the chicken quesidilla and the crabcake on our way out and both were amazing!! Loved it! read more

Pleasantly surprised. Took advantage of the excellent happy hour menu, out the door for $20 for quick preflight meal. The BLT was fantastic; crisp bread & bacon and nice thick juicy slices of tomato. Will definitely stop in again for the happy hour on future trips. read more

Wow. The service is absolutely horrible. Both times we tried the wait for service was incredibly long with only a handful of people. Additionally I was over charged twice! The first time the server said the manager wasn't there and nothing could be done. The second time I disputed the extra 3.5 on my order the server went for their manager. Ordered the chicken dinner - half a chicken, sweet potato fries, and asparagus grilled. The chicken was exactly like you get from a supermarket rotisserie for $6. Exactly. So I assume that it is the same. Not even gravy or sauce or anything to go with it. And not very good, as one would predict. The fried look like the came precut and frozen, and were heated up. No real deep fried flavor. The asparagus had no grill flavor, but was otherwise OK. read more
