This place sucks at serving. My friend and I got here at 3:30 and waited for our friends to get here and they got here at 3:50. They took long to take our order then never checked up on us. Never checked to see if we needed anything else. Asked for the manager because it had been long since they've checked up on us and then us proceeded to argue with one of the managers which only gave us excuses of why they couldn't come to us. It's only Thursday! Which is not a busy day! It now 8:08 still waiting for someone to give us our bill and no discount was given. I went here for the lunch the other day because I was in the area and I felt the food was overall pretty good but nothing spectacular. But the reason I'm giving them 2/5 stars because this is actually my second time having lunch there and the first time I thought it was a coincidence but this time my concern was actually confirmed. So my concern is that they separate the dining room, one side was full of Hispanic people, and the other side there were White, Black, and other people seated. I also noticed they were more attentive to the Hispanic customers and rarely came to check on others who were on the other side of the dining room. This is not ok, and made me feel very uncomfortable. So for that reason, I will not be returning here again. read more

Can't speak to the restaurant itself because have never been inside of it, have always ordered out. The food itself is very good. I stick to the fajitas, and have always been happy with the flavor and quality of them. Their Flour Tortillas are good, without being too heavy. Omg!! I have been on the hunt for a delicious Mexican restaurant and thanks to Yelp I found it. I was out this past Sunday with my mom, my brother and my brother's friend. I work not to far from Gessner so I had seen the restaurant before but hadn't gotten a chance to try it out. I've been having this craving for Mexican food that just had not been fulfilled so we ended up at Chaves. The location is in a dated little strip center but please don't let the location off put you from this gem. Inside is very homey and family centered with large oversized tables with lots of room and space. The bar is located behind the dining floor. For a late Sunday afternoon it was a nice crowd. We were seated and received prompt service from our cute waiter lol. For the life of me I can't remember his name but I'll know him when I come back. The green salsa was very yummy, chips hot and fresh. The menu is huge! So I ,being the indecisive person that am, just wanted to order up all my favorites one at a time lol. I settled on the Chicken Poblano. Yall..when I tell you..that food was so freaking good!! The chicken breast was moist and seasoned ,yummy rice, and those fresh homemade tortillas.....yeeees!! I will be back sooner than later. I look forward to trying the carne and this fish that everyone is saying is the best. Customer service was great. The owner came out and introduced himself to the patrons (idk why I forgot everyone name that day, I didn't even have a margarita lol). The owner was super sweet and appreciative of our business. Every Time I eat here I feel like family. Huge selection in the menu. My original goal was to systematically try everything on the menu. I didn't succeed, but I also found that literally everything was prepared with the utmost care and delicious! My recommendations would be the Chimichanga or the venerable Pollo Mostaza. The staff is friendly and welcoming. When I drop by I feel like I'm visiting with old friends. The owner will even come by and shoot the breeze. Went here last night for dinner. My friends warned me that the place was bare bones, but the food and service is wonderful - I wholeheartedly agree. Since we went on a Wednesday night for a late dinner it was really easy to get a seat. The service was prompt and the waiter was very attentive-always asking if we were doing okay and watching our glasses to know when we needed refills. The food was so inexpensive, I set an expectation that the quality of the food would be reflective of the cost, but no.... everything was delicious - my meat was tender, flavorful and everything on the place was fresh. I also liked that my meal was neatly presented on a white square. Great food, Great service.....check...what more could you need? I know.... a visit from the owner who asked about our experience. This place was completely unexpected! When you live in Houston, you've had Mexican food that runs the gamut- Chavez was a happy surprise. Excellent Tex-Mex- we started with some very fresh tasty guacamole (the complimentary salsas and chips were tasty and fresh) and I had the fajita- enchilada- taco plate. The food was seasoned nicely, not salty, and the flour tortillas were made in-house. Our waiter was very nice and super-informative. I'm going back to try the queso and ritas next time. Don't be put off by the run-down strip center- the restaurant is clean and neat and I've shopped at the King Dollar next door for years. Glad to have some great Tex-Mex in Spring Branch. read more

Our first time here - super convenient and great service! Food was great - shared chile con queso with ground beef - be warned - it's a lot for two! But you'll want to eat it all! Beer comes with a very frosty mug fully dressed! Dinner - Had fajita tacos, crunchy taco, and cheese enchiladas. All were really good and huge portions! The rice and refried beans were great. I work in this area off of Dairy Ashford and I10. Decided to yelp for a new Mexican place for lunch. Found these reviews and decided to take a coworker and go here today. The place is in a pretty run down strip center but don't let that deter your visit. The green and red salsas were pretty good with the green being the better of the two. Chips were warm and tasty. We started with the queso which was pretty good and had the right consistency (I hate thick queso). It could have been a tad more heated through but still good nonetheless. For lunch I ordered the Pork Tacos based on the positive feedback I saw here on yelp. I was not disappointed. They were fabulous and had a bit of spice to them. Pork was served on corn tortillas and quite a large portion on each of the tortillas. It came with rice and beans that were passable. If I were to choose one thing to consider changing with this dish it would be to serve each portion of pork on two corn tortillas instead of one. The single tortilla full of pork doesn't hold up well. Of course this doesn't detract from the great flavor. Just a suggestion. My coworker order the enchilada plate with cheese enchiladas and rice/beans. He commented it was good but no better than what he had at other places. He also really liked the queso allot. The service was quick and the place not crowded at all during lunch. Waiter was good and asked if this was our first time visiting and what we thought about the food. This place opened recently and I thought I'd give it a try. First impressions- there's no one here! A party of four came in about halfway through the meal, but that was it. The restaurant is lined with booths along 2 walls with tables in the center and a bar with stools along the wall behind the tables. Multiple tvs are spaced along the walls. It was very clean, and the wait staff was attentive. Now, on to the food! First the ubiquitous chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and there were 2 types of salsa, one a sweetish fire roasted red, and the other a kind of creamy cilantro with a little more spice to it. Both good. The menu is large and it was hard to choose, but I settled on the carnitas de la casa. This came with a chicken fajita enchilada, fresh piping hot flour tortillas, borracho beans, rice, pico de gallo, guacamole, and of course the carnitas. It was delicious. Big chunks of tender pork in a tasty sauce. I recommend it, and I will be back! read more

We Yelped for a good Mexican place near Clay and the Beltway. Chavez had a good rating so deicded to give it a try. The server was very nice, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. We ordered the chile con queso with ground beef. It was a bit odd. There were chunks of potatoes in the sauce. Not bad, just strange. I had a carnitas taco with the house made corn tortillas and a ground beef crispy taco with spanihs rice and the borracho beans. The carnitas were everything the other Yelpers promised! Fatty, tasty and tender pork! The rice tasted off... I did not eat mine :( I was afraid it was bad, had a weird smell. The charro or borracho beans were pretty fantastic! Josh had the beef fajita tacos and the carnita tacos as well. He preferred his fajita taco. The restaurant was very clean, food came out timely, and we had a pleasant lunch :) Nothing too special, but we may be back for the $2.50 margaritas! read more

Great restaurant - a hidden gem. It is in a bit of a seedy-feeling strip mall, but once you get in, it feels great. Everyone who works here earnestly wants you to have a great experience. Really enjoy the service. Food is fantastic - very obvious everything is made from scratch. Tortillas are great and the chicken fajitas are delicious - great seasoning. Love the tomatillo sauce. I asked them on my last visit to make vegetable fajitas (not on the menu) and they made a delicious plate of cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, and onions. The spinach and chicken quesadillas are my current favorite! Note that they do have mushrooms in them since I don't think that's listed on the menu. They taste so fresh and the tortilla is slightly crispy and buttery. Like they grilled in in butter. I will go back for the rest of my life just for that. Chips, red salsa, and a creamy (avocado, tomatillo and sour cream perhaps) green salsa are free. I'd drink the green sauce like a smoothie if I could. You'll pay about $12 a person at weekday lunch time. The carne guisada, although different than what I like (thick cumin gravy), is very popular with one of my lunch buddies. The sauce is thin with small chunky peppers, tomatoes, and onion. The refried beans and rice is nothing to write home about but they are good. The rice has a low amount of chili powder as a seasoning. I'm not a fan of heavy chili powder rice, like at Lupe Tortilla. The service is, as always, hit or miss. Last time I went, service was fairly prompt. The time before that it was excruciatingly lacking. So much so that we didn't go back for a while. The time before that it was perfect. read more

I ordered "El Rico" and it was so delicious! Homemade tortillas, tasty beef taco, melt in your mouth pork, and an amazing verde chicken enchilada! Wish I lived closer because I'd be eating there often. It came with two separate salsas.. one a warm roasted chipotle, and the other a creamy verde salsa. Both so good. Tried this place out tonight for dinner. Had the stuffed peppers w cheese as appetizers. I must have ended up with the spicy jalapeno pepper as I was sweating to finish it. Had the seafood enchiladas which came with rice and charro beans. I really liked the enchilada sauce used.. very flavorful. Also came with a few slices of avocado and sour cream. For dessert had the flan which was very unique in flavor. It isnt the average flan found in mexican restaurants...was told there were cream cheese and few other ingredients that made it slightly different. The owner came out and introduced himself. He seemed dedicated to meeting his customers and seemed passionate about the food he offers on his menu. Food was delicious. Everything was so fresh. The rice was so fresh and homemade tasting. Try the flan it's great. Fajitas were tender and high quality, they didn't disappoint. My only complaint was that the place could use some personality in its decorations to match its fabulous food. The overhead fluorescent lights and lack of decorations made me feel like I was eating in a school cafeteria or church hall. Easy fix! Otherwise, food is right where it should be. read more

I was in town for training camp and came here based on the ratings. However, I was not all pleased with the service or the food: 1. Our waiter today took entirely too long. He rarely checked on us and I even had to get someone else to get him. I could understand if the restaurant was busy, but it wasn't even for a lunch crowd (which was very surprising). 2. I ate lunch around 1:00 and my stomach is still reeling from the food (it's about midnight). 3. Did I say that the service was terrible? Possibly the worst I've ever experienced. I have been to Chavez twice. Their service is very slow during dinner time. I recommend ordering everything at once and the food is average. Chavez Mexican Cafe is LEGIT. I normally don't care for Tex Mex, but Chavez is now one of my favorites! I will definitely be returning. I had the fish brava - the tilapia was perfectly cooked and the sauce was so addictive. Our waiter was very friendly, and he really made us feel at home. This is my family's favorite restaurant in our neighborhood. Fantastic service, amazingly rich and tasty food. A good kids menu priced right. Happy Hour is much more than an hour a day. The carnitas is stunning: moist, rich pure pork flavor with generous portions. Carne Guisada almost matches it! Anything and everything we've had is great. Tortillas are home made. Use to be good, but last night was horrible. Waiter was new and they put him alone on his second day. Felt sorry for him. Food was not what we ordered. First we ordered shrimp with jalapenos and we got chicken, then one order was chicken and beef fajitas for two, we got chicken for one and no sides!!Then there was a big burrito and got the wrong one. Big fan of this place! Been here at least 10 times. Everyone who works here seems to be all a part of the family - which is great. I sit at the bar and enjoy chatting it up. Food is very good. Fajita meat is always a great medium, with a nice ring and seasoned well. Cheese enchiladas are pure tex-mex gooey (a good thing) The two salsas, red and green, are addicting. Margaritas are well prepared. Just a solid, no frills, never a disappointment tex-mex joint. There are lots and lots of similar places on Gessner between Kempwood and I-10. I think I've eaten at all of them. This is the best one, hands-down. read more
