In the past fifteen years the Rego Park and Forest Hills area has had a large influx of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. And with them comes their wonderful dishes. Cheburechnaya a restaurant that opened after a large fire burnt down three stores prior to its existence. The food is Kosher and the meals are what you would enjoy in a Bukran Jewish home. Spicy carrot salad, large dumplings, Shishkbob's, incredible bowl shaped crackers and dips to go with it. Plus the meals are very affordable. The service is a little slow because the place is very popular but they have wacky Russian TV playing all day long to entertain you. A dining experience not to be missed. read more

I just came back shopping at Century 21 at Rego Park which FINALLY opened. It was about 2pm and I was famished. I wanted to go to this place in quite a long time and finally was convenient to go. It was a weekday as my boss (me) let me have the day off as things were slow in the office. I went for the lagman which I think the name is derived from lo mein. It was something close to beef tripe soup with noodles. It was tasty and satisfying, but I had better versions in a Chinese restaurant. The lamb kebab was good quality lamb and tasty served with onions. Good job! I also went for Chebureki with mushrooms and the Chebureki with pumpkin. The crust was light, thin and crispy, and not cheap on the filling also a very good job by the chef. I also got the Goshtgizhda which had lamb in it but the quality was not as good as the skewer. All come served with sauce on the side. The two people I went with got the borscht which comes hot. They said it was OK and I take it to meant satisfying but not the greatest. Service was very friendly and the place was clean. I would give this place another try to experience other items on the menu. The bill came out to be about $26 for three people. read more

The food here is fantastic, particularly the skewers. I thought of taking a star off for the indifferent service, but the food is so good and affordable that I didn't have the heart. First, the skewers. They're phenomenal. Certainly get the fatty lamb ribs, which are tangy and garlicky from the marinade. But try some of the more unusual stuff too. The calf's liver skewer was phenomenal---wonderfully tenderly and perfectly cooked. I wanted to order more but was too stuffed. The lamb fat skewer was also surprisingly good. I was underwhelmed by the sweetbreads, but perhaps I expected too much. Second, the non-skewer foods. The pilaf (plov) is good but not amazing. The cheberuki were also a little underwhelming, particularly given the place's name. The filling was good, but it was all balled up in one corner. The staff is friendly but overworked, so it can take awhile for them to get to you. But the food is so good that it's definately worth it. read more

Delicious food. Great prices. You can order half portions. I've tried beef skirt kebab, boneless chicken kebab, Lula kebab and lamb kebab. All kebabs were perfectly seasoned, tender meat. Great experience. We were a party of 7, and we all enjoyed the food and service. We tried the Hummus, Beef Soup and assortments of Kebabs. All cooked to perfection. The Beef skirt kebab was slightly too salty to my liking but still excellent. The soup was very hearty and tasted authentic homemade. This is my hands-down favorite place to down a Baltika 7, fill-up on green plov and pickled vegetables, and watch sensual music videos in languages other than english. Bill B. Comically bad service: The food was so bland and uninspired that I found myself jealous of the person in our party whose main course never arrived. But the standout was the service, which was not just unacceptably inattentive but comically inept. When soup no one ordered arrived and later when we twice pointed out that two things we had ordered, including one person's main course, never turned up, we were met with not apology or promise to get the missing food ASAP. Instead the waitress repeatedly argued that she had read our order back to us and so any mistakes were our fault not hers. It was so surreal I began to think we were subjects of some prank show or an Uzbek reboot of Candid Camera. To top it off, our waitress accidentally spilled about a third of a bottle of wine, divided evenly between my wife's lap and the floor, without an offer to replace the bottle or bring us a couple more glasses. When the bill arrived, we were charged full price for the wine. A complaint brought a promise of taking care of us next time. Good strategy since none of us will ever set foot in that place again. (Note: I have never even considered writing one of these reviews but this was too much not to share). PS. We came all the way from NJ to try this place. We went on a Saturday and were seated right away. We ordered in stages because we were afraid all the food would come at once and wanted to take our time. We got a lavosh kind of flat bread thing that was the size of a giant bowl. It tasted of cumin and was awesome. We got an assortment of samsy (pumpkin, mushroom, potato) and chebureki (potato, mushroom) and a round thing that was meat filled. All were great! I liked the samsy better. They were baked not fried. Israeli salad with avocado was fantastic and then we got an assortment of shish kabobs (salmon, chicken, lamb rib (I think) and then veggies (tomato, peppers and onion). The onion was amazing. (I'm a vegetarian so I can't tell you about the meat). Service was friendly, especially since we had no idea what we were ordering. We had kosher wine and Heineken but noticed many people byo vodka. It was like eating in someone's Russian grandmother's house - if she had access to a million kinds of meat. If they changed the lighting from fluorescent to more "romantic" and got better napkins instead of the paper napkin dispenser on the tables it would be even more welcoming. Would definitely go back. My wife and I are big fans of this restaurant forl many years. First of all, they have a selection of Kabobs that you don't find anywhere else. Items like liver, heart, testicles, and sweetbread. The good part is that you can get to try a lot of them because them come in small skewers only a few dollars each. Secondly in my humble opinion their quality and preparation of the foods is amazing. The Kabobs are served as soon as they are ready, and they are always perfectly done: not too raw or not too well done, just right. Even the grilled vegetables are delicious. There is a lot more to the menu, including great salads. Don't forget the fries either. They come topped with grated garlick. This is a very basic looking restaurant, but the service is always good. If you are looking for good food at a great value this is the place. read more

Best Bukharian food in Queens. After trying out every other Bukharian/Uzbek/Central Asian restaurant in the area, I came to the conclusion that this place is the only one worth going to. You can't go wrong with the chebureki, especially for under 2 dollars each. Get one of each and debate your favorite! We also like the green pilaf, dolma, and the soups we've tried. The prices and food are great. We've only ever gotten delivery and the phone service is kind of surly if you get a non-native English speaker (which is the norm) and the wait a bit long, but we're also a little out of the way for them so I'm happy they'll come out here at all! We've been dining in at this restaurant for several years at least once a month. The food is always super fresh and is the main reason why we keep coming back. Prices have gone up since the restaurant first opened, but we are sticking to our tradition. The service is quick, but, at times, it takes a few minutes to get the attention of the waitress, as they are busy serving dozens of customers at the same time. The restaurant is always full (at least when we are there during weekend dinner times). My favorite is the sea bass shish kebab. It's delicious! Kids love the traditional "chebureks" and "chicken pelmeni in a broth". Meals at this restaurant definitely provide good value for the money. read more

My husband and I had been there couple times. We have always had good experience: amazing food and friendly services. Unfortunately, we have unfriendly waitress today. We didn't know her name but on the dining receipt which showed the server was Sem. She was so unhappy and looked like all customers were owing her money. She never smiled nor said "thank you","you are welcome". I used to be an assistant manager at a restaurant, and I know how important the waiter/waitress service to the business of a restaurant. My husband and I always give the waiter/waitress 20% of tip of the restaurant we were dining, unless we were really upset with the service or food. Due to her attitude and poor service, we gave her 15% of tip and she looked even more unhappy when she looked at the recipe. She never say "good bye, thank you for coming" when we stepped out the door either. We hope a manager or supervisor could see this and help her improve her serving skills. As a former assistant manager, I will never allow bad mood, unhappy face, poor manner servant to serve my customers. Customers come to your restaurant to eat your amazing food not deal with a bad mood waitress. Sorry we have to give it 3 stars because of the bad service. I went to Cheburechnaya eatery for the first time based on the good rating on the Yelp last week. I ordered green pilaf and potato Chebureki. Both were horrible. I couldn't eat the green pilaf at all, the smell of meat fats were unbearable. The potato Chebureki was tasteless and after one bite I asked for the bill, paid for that awful foods and left. I'd never ever again go that restaurant. my recommendation, don't go there, it's waste of money and time and you'll leaves still hungry and also angry. read more

Best shish-kebobs in NYC. Everything is fresh and delicious. We go there once every few weeks for a great sit down dinner with friends or family. The most I ever spent without limiting what or how much I want to eat is about $35 per person. A nice lunch is about $15. We have friends that come all the way from Jersey for dinner at this place. read more
