Absolutely horrible experience. My friends and I came here excited for a girls' night after seeing this place all over TikTok, and it was ruined within minutes. We've never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. The staff was incredibly rude from the moment we walked in. We were told we couldn't sit at tables because they were "reserved," yet there were no signs anywhere. Fine but there was absolutely no reason to speak to us with such disrespect. Then one of the employees told my friend she wasn't being seated because she was wearing a Messi Argentina jersey. It was such an unnecessary, immature comment that left us completely shocked. When we tried to speak to the manager about how we were treated, it only got worse. Instead of apologizing or taking us seriously, the staff laughed while we were trying to explain what had happened. Being laughed at as paying customers was humiliating. We came here excited to celebrate and left feeling embarrassed, disrespected, and honestly sad. No one deserves to be treated that way for simply walking into a restaurant. There are plenty of places that actually value their customers. We will never be back, and I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time or money here. read more

The food was decent, but my experience with the owner and billing process was extremely disappointing. A member of our party was feeling unwell due to pregnancy, so my friend (her husband) called the restaurant to discuss the reservation. We were told there would be a cancellation charge, so we explicitly decided NOT to cancel and kept the reservation. Despite that, a $60 cancellation fee was charged to my card a few minutes later. When I called to ask about it, the conversation became unnecessarily hostile and confrontational. After several calls and dealing with the owner, we were told the charge would be removed because the reservation had never actually been canceled (no duh). We still wanted to have a good night so we attended dinner as planned, spent roughly $500, and thought the matter was resolved. Unfortunately, there were additional issues. Our original bill included charges for three glasses of wine even though only two had been ordered. Ok... that charge was corrected after we pointed it out. But here's where it gets shitty. I discovered that the final amount charged to my card did not match the signed receipt. I left a specific tip amount (still 18%!) and took a photo of the signed receipt showing the total. The owner apparently didn't like this amount and fraudulently charged us higher than what I authorized. At that point there had been three separate billing issues involving the same meal: - A cancellation fee for a reservation that was never canceled - An incorrect wine charge that we had to catch ourselves - A final credit card charge that did not match the signed receipt I rarely leave negative reviews, but after multiple billing discrepancies and the way the situation was handled, I cannot recommend this restaurant. The owner was aggressive on the phone, is unethical and will clearly scam you if he can get away with it. If you choose to dine here, carefully review your bill before paying, take a photo of your signed receipt, and verify that the final charge posted to your card matches the amount you authorized. Specializing in Moroccan cuisine, there's so many standout dishes to choose from. I loved the refreshing Moroccan salad, steamed mussels, and steak fritas. I asked if reservations were needed on yelp and the answer was no. Then I called and asked the same question and was told no, the young lady asked me how many and I said 2 people. She said just walk in. Then when we arrived we were asked by a tall gentleman if we had reservations and I explained what I was told. He said, we have tables but you only have 1 hour. I reiterated what the lady I spoke to said and she came over and back peddled and tried to say something wholly different than what she said earlier on the phone. Super unique place! I really enjoyed the ambiance. This is a true hidden gem in all aspects of the phrase. You would totally miss it driving down the street. The minute you walk in, you are hit with these red lights and loud, funky psychedelic music. It's a VIBE. I love how it's an indoor/outdoor space and very dimly lit. It's cozy and intimate. I saw some larger groups dining together as well as lots of couples. We came for date night and it was a total experience. The menu is a little on the small side, but they have a great wine list! If you loved chilled reds, you'll be a happy camper. They only have wine and beer. We had the mussels with fries, braise short rib and couscous for dinner. Plenty of food for two. We were actually full after the mussels and short rib, even though the short rib only came with three pieces. The meat just fell apart! Delicious. All of the flavors were amazing and authentic to Moroccan cuisine. Service was great, but a little slow at times. I think it's a smaller operation they run here. We also went on a Sunday night, and it was pretty chill. The inside was empty but the patio was filled! Came here on a Saturday night around 9pm. This little hidden place was super cool. On the outside, I was thinking "where are we??", but when we got inside, it was a cute and intimate Moroccan vibe restaurant. When you first enter, there's a bar to your left and you pass through there to get to the main dining area. It was an outdoor eating area with cute trees and casual ambience. Dimly lit, with red lighting, cool music, and a little dance floor to get your groove on. Things I didn't like: - bathroom was dark asf, couldn't see, there was only red lighting -only serves beer and wine -owner was our server, who was kinda grumpy the whole time because we had a large party and had to cancel and get a smaller table However, food was reasonable priced and delicious! Hidden oasis in the heart of Lincoln Heights! This place is sooo unassuming but once you step in you'll feel like you've been transported! Lush outdoor area which is perfect for girls night or date night. They don't have a full bar but I had the Catalan vermouth which was perfect, and my friends enjoyed the zizou spritz as well. Food menu is small, but mighty. We had the roasted veg dip, mussels french style with fries, and the couscous! All of which were delish and went well with our bevs. Could still have a full meal here but you'd have to be smart with ordering as we were! Such a cute spot! I have no idea how I even found this restaurant, but I'm so glad I did -- it instantly took me back to France. It's a dark, intimate space with small tables and that classic European-style service. The menu is small, but everything we had was lovely. We started with the MOROCCAN SALAD and SPINACH PUFF PASTRY, both great openers. For mains, the MUSSELS and STEAK FRITES were excellent, and for dessert, there was just one option -- the TARTE TATIN -- which did not disappoint. The only downside was how dark it was, both in the dining room and the bathroom -- I could barely see my food and it impacted the experience. But aside from that, everything else was wonderful. It's just such a stunning atmosphere and the food LOOKS so good with such an interesting fusion of cultures--expectations are high. Especially here in LA. But if you go in with reasonable expectations to enjoy the atmosphere, Zizou is still hits the mark in my opinion. Oh man, this is the kind of place I would normally want to gatekeep, but it's not like I'm gonna make it my weekly hang out, but boy would I love to. Another random diamond in the rough... From the outside, you couldn't even tell that they were open for business, and yet once you walk through the threshold, it's like you are transported to another time/country/ city... Maybe Cuba or Miami, 1982? It was festive, lively, packed, great lighting, music, energy... I would say at least 60% of the place was outside in a super inviting city/garden setting. We were just hoping for a late night bite and thankfully caught them just before the kitchen closed, and they were very accommodating on getting us sat and fed. I really enjoyed the vibes and aesthetics of Zizou! When you walk in it feels like you stepped into a Moroccan open patio oasis with French rap blasting in the background. Came for brunch. It seems that it would be best to get here for dinner . I asked for the steak and fries, but it is 11:45 and we didn't know we couldn't order lunch . The Brunch selection is very small, not a lot of options. The ambience is great . So it seems if you visit early, it's just for a small hang out and not a celebration until dinner time . Food was different. It took a while to get our food though , even though the restaurant did not seem busy. We got here at 11:10 and didn't get our food until 12:26pm . Zizou is a labour of hard work, dedication and love, to be exact 4 years of craftmanship. Owners converted an empty space to a foodies' paradise. Whether you dine inside which offers a cozy atmosphere or outside surrounded by palms and sweet and delicious dragon fruits, you will not be disappointed. We ordered the steak and frites, which the steak is so buttery and melts in your mouth. The mussels were perfect and the broth so savory. You have to try the spinach puff pastry which must be accompany by a glass of wine. The service: first, we did not make reservations but they were able to accommodate us. Most tables were reserved. Back again! This time for their new brunch menu. This was the perfect spot to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in many many years. Per usual, delicious authentic fair. The pancakes were the standout for me--not too sweet, perfectly shareable and interesting texture that was sponge like with the in house made syrup. The Moroccan tea was also a delightful ending to our meal (wish it was bigger though). Service was on point also--it was cool to indirectly meet + be taken care of by one of the owners Boris and a lovely woman I didn't catch her name but her French accent is so endearing and we enjoyed chatting about the neighborhood with her. It's really sad when businesses move into a neighborhood but fails to actually embrace the locals. Arrived to a nearly empty restaurant and after being seated for a few minutes, got moved to a much less desirable table because they had "already promised the table to someone else". The place is empty, but ok. Ended up at a table by the bar with zero ambiance and which had a full view of the employees hanging out and loudly. It was distracting and made us feel like our presence wasn't valued. Especially since nearly every other table in the main dining area was open. Should have walked out when we were rudely relocated as it felt disrespectful but powered through drinks and appetizers since one member of our party has been wanting to try it since January. The food was a little bland, but fine. Nothing memorable. Ultimately we decided we'd rather take our business to a local establishment that values the community they operate in and welcomes all. Ended up at the unpretentious restaurant next door, which is locally owned and operated. They welcomed us with open arms and unsurprisingly, THAT restaurant was packed. read more

What an adorable cute new spot in the middle of LA!! We were originally trying to go to another spot that ended up being closed on Sunday and happened upon Zizou around the corner. It was a pleasant surprise, as soon as we stepped in, I knew we were in for a treat. The ambiance is gorgeous, reminds me of being in Europe! I love that it's all outdoors in a patio space with plenty of plants and greenery. We ordered the calamari to start, which was absolutely delicious. The breading was perfect and not too heavy, and the calamari itself was tender and so yummy. The sauce it came with had a little kick to it, what a perfect addition to a creamy sauce!! For main course, we ordered the steak frites to share. The steak was amazingly tender and cooked perfectly (medium rare) - the fries were thin and also done so well. I loved that they were thin and not thick fries! At the moment they do not have hard liquor, only beer and wine. Hence the 4 and not 5 stars quite yet, but they're definitely a solid 4.5 stars! It's surprising to find a restaurant like this in Lincoln Heights and a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The ambience and decor are really pleasing, nice soft lighting, excellent background music, and a lovely patio with comfortable seating. One of the owners told me that they had spent four years building this place themselves. It's obvious they take just pride in what they've accomplished. How I wish they had worked harder on the food. My partner and I both love Moroccan cuisine and had high hopes for Zizou. So I wish I could be more enthusiastic about what we ordered. We started with the samourai calamari. It was passable, but a little overcooked and somewhat rubbery. The spinach puff pastry looked and sounded amazing but it also fell flat, very bland and too dry. But the biggest disappointment was the almond and apricot tajine with chicken. We struggled to find any taste in it. The rice had no flavor and the chicken was also too dry. We fought over the two apricots we found. So as much as I love the idea of this place (and the service was very good too), I hope they invest as much time and care in the menu as they have in the restuarant itself. I wish I could have given them at least four stars, but I have to be honest about our experience. However, don't be discouraged from trying Zizou! Maybe they were just having an off night. read more

Having visited Morocco, we were looking for some authentic tajine-prepared food, and Zizou did not disappoint. The almond & apricot chicken tajine dish had great flavor. The chicken was seasoned well and the apricots were cooked perfectly. We also tried the Moroccan salad, which was delicious, and the steak frites dish. A small overpriced salad you could find at Trader Joe's, and a bland $30 tajine that was nowhere near worth it. For $75 total, the experience was insulting. Other staff (a woman & the busser) were kind, but the main server ruined the night. No "vibes" or TikTok hype can make up for being treated like an inconvenience. From the street, you'll see a low key exterior that attracts no attention and offers zero information about the gems that lie inside. Then you walk into a dark bar area which opens up into a wider restaurant that opens up further into a great courtyard garden. The service is friendly and welcoming. You can place an order in French or English, either way, they are happy to accommodate you. The servers were cool people. (I read some reviews here that were critical of the waiters, ignored them. Those diners probably are not familiar with North African people. Trust me, these servers are cool and eager to serve you some great food). The menu is French by way of North Africa. Morocco style with inspiration from Algiers. Every bite is genuinely delicious. The tangine was subtly spiced and richly flavored with chicken meat that falls off the bone, exactly as it should. The steak frites is textbook perfect French bistro steak: steak grilled on a super hot surface so that the exterior is charred, but the interior is still tender and red. Fries were perfect, literally the best french fries in Los Angeles. Calamari appetizer was perfectly on point: minimally fried in clean oil, excellent texture, not overdone, not rubbery. This is a dish that many restaurant cooks get wrong, but not here at Zisou, it's exactly right. Crisp, clean, hot, crunchy with a bright Harissa sauce. They have a good wine and beer and cocktail program. Personally I am going to come back to Zisou as soon as I can. read more

Let me start by saying: the food is incredible. Truly. This review is not about the food. It's about the service...or more specifically, the disrespect. Zizou, we need to talk. Because what's happening in your front-of-house is not just sloppy, it's offensive. I've worked in and around the hospitality industry for over 20 years. I'm in my late 30s. I've seen it all. But I've never been treated the way I was treated here, especially not by someone wearing the title of "manager." This was my second visit. I came back because the food really is that good,the short rib especially. But great food should never be the consolation prize for bad treatment. And after this last experience? I'm done. Let's start at the door. Once again, we walked in and weren't greeted. Staff floated by, making eye contact with everything but us. Five, maybe seven minutes of awkward hovering before a very sweaty, very disheveled man, who I would later discover was the "manager", finally acknowledged the entrance. But not because of us. No, it was three ethnically ambiguous, beige women who arrived after us that finally pulled his attention. Only then did he decide to look our way and ask, "Who was first?" As if the only visibly Black lesbian couple, dressed to the nines and standing dead center in the entryway, had somehow been invisible. But I digress. Or maybe I don't. Once seated, we were greeted by a server who clearly woke up and chose indifference. Water took longer than wine. The table was still cluttered with dirty appetizer dishes 40 minutes into the meal, and I had to ask for it to be reset and cleared. The whole vibe was chaotic, the staff clearly undertrained and overwhelmed, but still, I was patient. What I wasn't prepared for was the hostility that followed. As a former manager myself, I attempted to speak to the man in charge calmly, genuinely trying to understand what was happening. But instead of listening, he threw his finger in my face and snapped, "I don't wanna talk to you." Then he turned and walked off like we hadn't just spent our evening and our money in his establishment. When I told my partner, she was understandably upset. When she addressed him, he raised his voice at us. Loud, defensive, accusatory. He claimed I was "attacking" him, because I said the service was bad. That's when it all crystallized: this man wasn't just unprofessional, he was used to being disrespectful. Especially toward women. And probably not used to being checked by people who look like us--people he clearly didn't value as customers or as human beings. And here's the kicker: I tried to just settle the tab and leave. Quietly. Gracefully. But he told us not to pay. So we didn't. And honestly? That was the only decent service we got all night. So if you're into places with amazing food and absolutely no respect for your presence, go ahead and try the short rib. But if you believe service is part of the experience, and that customers, especially Black queer women, deserve to be treated with basic dignity? You might want to eat elsewhere. Or bring your own water and a spirit of deep, deep patience. read more
