10/10 across the board. the inside of this place is beautiful even after sundown, the service was really good despite how busy they were (I love how she gave us time to chat and really enjoy our food), and the food was all hits. the whipped feta, sweet potatoes & steak frites were some of the favs. but I really don't think anything wasn't good to us. we had run out of bread for the hummus & whipped feta & she immediately brought us more. the food was very reasonably priced in my opinion - for 5 girls eating and everyone getting 1-2 drinks each - we spent around $60 each! Incredible date night spot, or any time spot, honestly. If you can reserve a balcony table ahead of time, I highly recommend it; but there's not a bad seat in the house. Food is fresh, delicious, and there's something for everyone (even vegans like me). I always accidentally refer to it as the Horseshoe to my girlfriend because of the big U shaped booths they have -- great for a group of 4 or 6. I haven't tasted anything but the NA mocktails which are thankfully made from NA spirits, and not just a bunch of sugary syrups. My girlfriend told me every drink she's ordered has been dope, so there's that. Live music on some nights too? Very cool spot, highly recommended. P.S. bring back the fried olives read more

I've only been here for drinks, so i cannot attest how the food is. But what a gorgeous space! I came here on a saturday night and the place was packed, but we were able to secure seats at the bar. This place is meant for small parties. lots of 4 tops and 2 tops. There a neat balcony area. I can totally see going on a date here for sure. The service was great, very attentive. The drinks were mostly very good, just not sure about that peanut old fashioned though, that was a bit strange but YMMV. We were here yesterday for dinner and the food was great! Live music was great with a piano and cello. Vibes were great. Service was great. Parking can be tough to find but street parking was free Sunday night. We had the delicate squash rings, maitake mushroom skewers, Brussels sprouts, seared halloumi salad, sticky sweet potato, roasted cauliflower, pan roasted monkfish, and sea bream. This is the kind of place you want to bring a group of friends so you can share more plates and taste everything. Everything was good! My favorites were the mushroom skewers (super flavorful), the squash rings for something crispy, and the sea bream with couscous. The brownie was also delicious! Their zero proof drinks were also really good. A lot of the girls really enjoyed Anonymous Email. I got the Phony Mezcal Negroni. Some zero proofs taste overly sweet like a juice, but my fake Negroni wasn't very sweet, which is what I wanted. Definitely want to come again to try more on the menu! read more

I came here for my birthday with my best friends and had a great time! The ambiance was lovely with live music, our servers were Brandy and Tim and they took such good care of us. The food was delicious, it was hard to choose.. but luckily they offered great suggestions. They also were extremely mindful of an allergy at the table and made sure to inquire or give notes on each dish that was safe since we were doing family style. I actually fucking hate it here. As someone who lives in LOS ANGELES there is better places. There are so many restaurants in this city that are worth the A price tag and B experience. There is always a 2 hour wait (for what besides ambiance or semblance of clout i dont know) And lastly theres no fucking womans restroom?????? If you have to pee you have to wait in line for men for a unisex restroom while there is an EMPTY mens restroom down the hall. Dining here i had to pee because i was drinking at their bar and had to go into their (again empty) mens restroom to relieve myself because any time i checked the "womens" unisex restroom line there was 2+ people in it. I dont understand ANNNNNYY of the hype of this spot and im more than pissed off about having to pay this tab. If i could recommend annnnny other place in this city i would. olive garden is better than this. Fuck this hipster actual shithole. Nothing is worth this price for this quality. read more

I never knew that checker hall had a whole restaurant slash bar before! I had been here for a show several years ago but I've also moved away from highland park once pandemic happened. Pros: I love that there is standing room, booths and table and chairs on the balcony. Although obviously most sitting areas were taken once we had gotten there. They had a pretty good dj that was bumping tuned the whole night. The bartenders were also not rude, which can be hard to come by from time to time. It can be both a pro and con that they have premixed drinks buuuut I got the Carmen and it was great! Cons: there seemed to have been only one bathroom that was designated for either gender. While the second one had a revolving door that I only saw guys go into. There isn't a designated dance floor and people weren't dancing, even though the music called for it. It can take a while to get a drink since it gets pretty packed. Their cocktails are premade, but I get that it makes service faster. But what made my experience a 5 star experience is I had left my clutch at a booth table and didn't realize til I was almost at my car. So I headed back in and when I went to see if it was there, it wasn't. But as soon as I approached the bar, a man who looked like a manager immediately said my name, and told me they had it in the back! I'm assuming the busser had seen it and swooped it for me. I was sooo thankful. What was funny, was as I was leaving an employee also said my name and was like oh you left your purse. So the whole team had communicated about a lost clutch, which is so awesome! Overall if your in the area, I would for sure either check out a show or head over the bar side to get a cocktail or two! read more

What a beautiful spot. This was our first time here and it did not disappoint! Our server, Ava was knowledgeable and explain the family style way of service. We shared everything so we all had a broader taste than we would get at other restaurants. She gave us food and drink recommendations and we jumped right in. The flavors were fantastic! Nothing over-powered the other. My favorites were the Little Gem Salad, the Sea Bream, the Persian cucumbers, glazed pork belly and my cocktail--KNEE DEEP IN THE HOOPLA--man, that was good. The restaurant was suuuuper busy but we weren't neglected. Our food came out quickly and our drinks stayed full. The view was beautiful but it was a bit loud with the crowd (we could still hear each other and have conversation and we met some nice people next to us who's son recommended the place and the ordered what they saw from our table!) and with the multiple sirens we heard on the street (which can't be helped). The ambiance is relaxed and classy. It's a small space but it doesn't feel small. Make sure to set your reservations! I need to try the schnitzel and steak and frites next but that will be hard because I want to reorder everything I just ate. read more

Gorgeous restaurant upstairs by the Lodge Room. Came in here with no reservations and got two seats at the bar before a concert. Cocktails and drinks are amazing! Everything was delicious. The draw back on this place is how chaotic it is. I think we literally lost two of our courses due to the staff delivering them to the wrong tables or seats. The bar seating is apparently not too organized. Same thing happened to the couple seating next to us. They lost their fry order and had to refire it. The decor is amazing and the food is so delicious I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu! read more

Went and didn't realize it was a reservation needed situation that's fine, we were told by the hostess it was an hour wait. White couple direct behind us also didn't have a reservation they were seated immediately even the couple felt uncomfortable with that and said "we don't want it if we're taking it from someone" since they probably overheard we were told we had to wait. The hostess said it was "no problem". We left immediately and won't be back. Clearly that hostess has some personal issues. read more

Man! Every time I come here I have to get it it's so good! Super tender and flavorful but that gravy makes you want to lick the plate. Can't go wrong with any drinks. Usually if they don't have something the bartender knows how to make what you like. Staff is super friendly. On some days it can get real busy but everyone is super attentive. OOWEE! Gorgeous baba ghanoush and patio. First bite of the pork belly was divine. The schnitzel sauces were little portals to different worlds. Thoughtfully designed lighting and seating- we sat on the patio and would love to try the booth next time. I need the number to their lamp guy. The food was delicious! I got the sesame chicken schnitzel. It's sweet and crispy. It a generous amount. I would suggest this plate can be shared. The salad had a taste of lemon zest. It came with three dips. One was tahini, tomato jam ( marinara) and the other was hummus. My husband ordered the whole branzino, it was the table's favorite. It was very tasty. It was well prepared very savory. My brother got the hanger steak. He said it was delicious, it came with a horseradish type of sauce. The best part was meeting Gabe, the chef! He's marvelous and went around all the tables explaining the dishes. He gave us a wine that went with the cheesecake. The cheesecake was very buttery. It came with a honey glazed peach. The decor is super cute. It's has a vintage flare with a touch of modern decor. It's show cute. It was clean and very comfortable. The customer service was two thumbs up all around. I stumbled upon this place during one of my long walks through NELA, and wow! Talk about being transported to a different world. The upstairs lounge felt a little European, a little New Orleans, a little old world, a little new. Hats off to the interior designer. There's a gorgeous balcony that overlooks Figueroa and the hillside across the 110, with tables for al fresco wining and dining (I cant think of a single place in LA that has a balcony like this). The happy hour cocktails are delicious but the true winner is the Falafel Pita: very possibly the best I ever ate. I'm salivating just thinking about it. I came around 5pm on a weekday and there was a decent crowd but not overcrowded at all. The bar tenders were extremely friendly, and definitely knew how to mix an awesome drink. First time here. Great ambiance. Love the Victorian fixtures and central bar in brass details. Moody yet lively place. Started with Whipped Feta app. That burnt honey butter steals the show. So good with the warm pita. Then the Swordfish Skewer, Persian Cucumber and Sticky Sweet Potato. The cucumber is like a deconstructed tzatziki and the sweet potatoes are addictive. A must order. Also had the Chicken Schnitzel and French Fries. Both good, nothing exceptional. Not a fan of dousing breaded chicken with a sweet sauce. Also, a tad overcooked and tough. After a summer in Vienna, I might be spoiled, but I digress... The tempura shrimp and the burrata were very tasty. Definitely recommend. Lastly, the bread here is so good. I am a bit conflicted here as I enjoyed my chicken schnitzel and I liked the decor but the restaurant is located up several stairs which made it hard for my elderly dinner guests to get up to the restaurant. It is also located above a club so it was a bit confusing finding the right floor and door to enter to get into the restaurant. The waitress we had was very friendly but it is an extremely dimly lit place. Probably great for a date night but not a family dinner. The drinks were okay but several members of my party indicated their food was severely bland. Once again I enjoyed my schnitzel and I would definitely recommend that. The appetizers like Brussels sprouts and pita with hummus were very yummy as well. However, there were a bit too many downsides for me to consider another visit. I was excited to try this spot after reading all the positive reviews. The location next to the Lodge is delightful, so nice to see the space being restored by and utilized, however for me that's where the positive ends. I like to see the menu without the use of my iPhone flashlight, but I can get over that easily. I like to see the food I'm eating especially if it's not that great. I've experienced dark tastings and they are an amazing experience all on their own. Tasting the delectable tasty ingredients this was not. Our meal was heavy handed and overly sauced. The fish we had smelled fishy and I contemplated not eating it, but we shall see. I wasn't planning on returning ever, but as I write this review I was invited to an event there, so maybe the stars will go up. read more
