The waitress couldn't have been better but the food was below average. Ordered grilled cheese, chili, and clam chowder soup. The soup was excellent. The grilled cheese not s good. They used very poor grade cheese that was stringy. Didn't finish. The chile was the worst I had ever. Same stringy cheese and the chile tasted very old and unseasoned. Checkers has become our "go to" breakfast spot. With many breakfast places around and many of them good.... we go with Checkers because the price is good and its good regular food. No crazy dishes. Came here recently with my husband and his parents and everything was great! We got seated right away in a booth and our waitress came to us right away to ask what drinks we wanted. This is a diner that has the two toned red and gold booths, and it has an open dining room concept. The place is very clean and the bus boys are EXTREMELY quick with cleaning the plates off the tables. So much so that they ask a second after you stop eating if you're done. They have specials written on a chalk board at the front of the restaurant, but they also have a pretty large menu. I'm not going to lie, I was a lite skeptical to try their food at first and I'm not sure why, but I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was. I ordered coffee and they kept refilling my mug everytime it was a little low which was nice. I swear the waitress refilled it like 5 times before I told her I was okay haha. For my breakfast, I ordered the breakfast sandwich (scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese on a croissant). It was amazing. The eggs were creamy and cooked so well, and the bacon was a little on the crisper side, but not burnt like many restaurants do. I put hot sauce on it and WOW. The sandwich was full of flavor and was freshly made to order. I also ordered breakfast sausages on the side (which came with 2 and were large). They were so good and tasted a bit sweet. I don't know specifically what kind they were, but I think they may have been turkey since they were a bit harder than soft. Honestly, I'd come back just for these sausages! Our family loved their food too and apparently my MIL has been raving to her friends how good this place is so that she could come back with them sometime soon. Our waitress always made sure we were satisfied with everything, even though she forgot my MIL toast twice, but she was so personable and explained she accidentally gave it to a different table and then forgot. Ambiance- was absolutely fantastic - the cafe was very clean, and the service was super prompt - great location and employees. So why the 3 stars? It was the food quality. Seriously - not impressive, I'm afraid. The OJ was clearly from concentrate; the sausage patties were hard little puckets that were clearly chosen because they were cheap (I usually like to enjoy cutting sausage patties with my fork- this was the first time I couldn't do that in a restaurant - I had to break out a knife). Same with toast - it just wasn't good quality bread- It seems the approach wasn't to provide good food- it was to provide an experience in a beautiful and well-maintained restaurant. I'd gladly pay $1 or $2 more per entree for higher quality foodstuffs. Checkers- we'll be back as we love your restaurant decor - but let's suggest improving food quality a bit, please - we'd be there much more often. read more

Another visit to Chicagoland and another hit out the park! When doing a search on Yelp for a place for a late breakfast I came across this one. Reading the reviews, I found it to be appealing so I decided to give it a shot. Little did I know I had already been here and written a review! Seating was fast, we had a sweet waitress who did a great job and, once again, a host visited the table to ask how everything was. Just as before, unfortunately, my food was a little on the cooler side but the other 3 people I dined with had piping hot food (I saw the steam). I'm guessing maybe they should time the cooking a little better. I had a basic breakfast (sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes). It was all delicious. No complaints from any of the other diners (burger, skillet, and hash) so we will definitely be back for more. read more

First of all, the manager (could be owner too) makes you feel very appreciated. He is friendly and personable. The service is top-notch. There was no wait to be seated for Saturday morning breakfast. Gotta love that! Lots of choices, including gluten free pancakes and waffles. I got the gluten free pancakes, since it is such a treat for me. I don't have them very often. I enjoyed them...they were good, but not g-r-e-a-t. I think the recipe needs a little tweaking. My husband had a breakfast platter with eggs, potatoes and bacon. Quality, fresh ingredients made it a winner. He had me try his hash browns because they were so yummy! Portion size for both of our breakfasts was HUGE! We were rolling through town last Sunday and I used Yelp to find a spot for brunch. My main criteria: good reviews and zero wait when I called. I was a bit worried when the woman who took my call assured me with confidence that she could seat a party of two with no wait. Was that a good sign? Or a sign that this place maybe isn't that great? We rolled the dice, and I am glad we did. Turns out that the non-wait was really just the result of a large restaurant and lickety split service. It's fast, efficient and -- yay for me -- delicious. Checkers actually reminded me a lot of the diners back home on the East Coast. No frills. Just fast, efficient service and good down home food. We were greeted immediately by a friendly host, who made us feel welcomed and seated us quickly. Our waitress was great, coming with water and coffee immediately, giving us time to peruse the huge menu and then taking our order. She also was great about stopping back to check on us, keeping our cups refilled and making sure we had everything we needed. And she had a great, warm personality. We really enjoyed our service. Foodwise, very good. Nothing crazy gourmet here -- just good down home breakfast. I got a bacon and cheese omelette, which was big, fluffy and came with my preferred American cheese even though I totally forgot to inquire about the type of cheese that came in the dish. The fact that they use American without me having to ask for it shows a deep understanding of what a breakfast omelette should be. (LOL, seriously, someone stop me.) It came with nice crispy breakfast potatoes/homefries and a side of pancakes that were just bomb. I basically ate my whole omelette, all of the pancakes and as many potatoes as I could fit. My husband got the pork chop breakfast partially because it's kind of a rare thing to find on a menu. The two chops, two eggs and breakfast potatoes were all good -- or so he said. I thought about this long and hard and the best way to explain my experience here is- it was just 'okay'. The place has a diner kind of feel (fits the theme based on the name), and the people are pretty friendly for the most part. They have a good selection of dishes, ranging from your usual breakfast food to sandwiches and wraps. I ordered the Steak and 2 eggs which was pretty good for the most part. I think I just didn't expect the steak to be in a plate with its juices from where it was cooked (or something like that) so it made the steak a little saltier than what I like. But when paired with hashbrowns, it made the perfect combo. I also switched out my pancakes for crepes (of course it's a few $ more) but I wasn't impressed by it cause the consistency was a bit thick compared to the thin crepes you usually get from other places. And the crepe didn't have any chocolate or strawberry syrup to it- I was offered pancake syrup but I don't like that combo so I just ate it plain with whipped cream and super little powdered sugar and fruit. Just made me curious as to why they won't add some kind of syrup to it- even just a little to make it tastier... I wasn't floored by this place so it won't be one of those I'll think of when thinking of good brunch places but I'd still say you should try it out- maybe you'll find that dish that wows you from here. read more

Well what brought me here honestly is the fact I had to put my beautiful 17 year old mainecoon cat to sleep at a nearby vet clinic. I came here twice this week because of everything I needed to do and everything I ordered was wonderful. If you love diner style comfort food reminiscent of the 1970's where it's all about traditional diner and breakfast items and comfort foods you won't be disappointed. A few days ago I ordered a tuna melt and fries and this afternoon I ordered a vegetarian skillet with some extremely decadent and rich pancakes. Don't come here if you're on a diet. I love the comfortable booths and the low-key, peacful atmosphere. You can take your time eating your meal because the staff will never rush you out the door. I'm so grateful this restaurant was open for dine in options because I really needed an emotional escape this week after dealing with my sick pet and two vet visits. This is the type of diner my parents used to take me to as a child so I appreciate the nostalgia and will definitely return.
