BEST PIZZA IN THE COUNTRY... Yeah, I said it. And I've stood tall in bars in Manhattan and told drunken New Yorkers that they had nothin on this little collective by my house. It's the best, the dankest, forever. I live a block away from cheeseboard, and I go AT LEAST once a week. Their breakfast isn't as famous as the pizza, but it's really great. If I need to wake up early in the morning, the promise of cheeseboard breakfast is enough to get pants on and get moving. Their coffee is great, wolverines are filling and cheap, and they even find a way to make english muffins seem exciting. If you get the english muffins when they're a little hot, then run home and toast them for a little bit and throw some butter on them, you have won the competition called breakfast. Their pizza, obviously, is perfect. Every day is good, I mean EVERY DAY. It doesn't matter what weird crap they throw on it, they will find a way to make it exactly what you wanted. Some of my personal favorites include: potatoes, pesto, lime, cilantro....in summer and fall they make pizza with corn occasionally. Every time I eat their lime and corn pizza it's like a combination of losing my virginity and getting baptized...a union between the physical and spiritual, indeed. They've recently added salad, which is pretty good. Their beers and wines are well selected and cheap, and it's always exciting to see how gracious they are with the little extra slices. There's also something oddly comforting about an old smiling man with a long white ponytail giving you pizza wrapped in a brown bag. Eating on the median is fun, listening to the jazz is cool, even waiting in line is a good chance to eavesdrop and see graduate students proud that they eat on northside, not on telegraph. Checking their website is also advised so you can strategically pick which day(s) of the week you want to eat depending on the ingredients. Look, what I'm trying to say is, I love you cheeseboard. We've known each other for a long time, 3 years now, and there's no other pizza for me. That one time when I did poorly on a test and I broke up with my girlfriend and didn't get enough sleep, YOU were there for me. Amazing Vegan Pizza Experience at The Cheeseboard! During the height of Covid, I came across a post from The Butcherson raving about The Cheeseboard's vegan pizza option, and I couldn't wait to try it! Finally, the day came, and it was an awesome experience from start to finish. The ambiance was nice, and I appreciated the clean bathrooms. However, be aware that there are limited seating options, so it's best to go in with patience and politeness. If you're ordering the vegan option, here's a pro tip: head straight to the front of the line to place your order. Once done, hop back to the line to wait for payment. If you're with a friend, have them handle one of the tasks to save time because you'll likely encounter a wait. One thing to note is that you can't order the vegan option as a slice; you must order a whole pie. But don't worry, it's definitely worth it! I must admit, I didn't realize there was a sign tied to the pizza boxes drop-off outside, and someone had to remind me. Lesson learned! But that chili sauce, oh my, it was incredible! I can't wait to go back for more. Now that I know it's vegan, I'm definitely going for the large size. Overall, The Cheeseboard is worth waiting in line for its fantastic vegan option. What can I say about the Cheeseboard that has not already been said? Frankly, not much. However, since this is hands down my favorite pizza, I feel compelled to write a review. What makes Cheeseboard pizzas the best? In my opinion it's because they break with convention, offering completely unique and creative pizzas and they make it work brilliantly. This isn't a 3rd tier restaurant like California Pizza Kitchen, which tries to be unique by offering tuna fish and jelly pizza. They do things a bit different, but like I said they make it work. One of my favorites comes topped with cremini mushrooms, onions, mozzarella and ricotta salata, arugula in a lemon vinaigrette. Another standout was the the pie they served in honor of Indian Independence Day in 2010, which came topped with, among other things, curried potatoes. Cheeseboard always has customers lined up literally down Shattuck waiting to eat. The kitchen is like an incredibly efficient assembly line, similar to the soup Nazi's kitchen on Seinfeld. However, instead of an insane tyrant behind the counter, the staff is always friendly. Choices are a bit circumscribed, as they only offer one variety of pizza a day and it's always vegetarian. Overall this is the most creative and best tasting pizza I've had. This is definitely one spot everyone who visits Berkeley needs to visit. read more

The Cheeseboard is AMAZING. The pizza is always interesting and delicious (one a day, always vegetarian, ranging from zucchini to tomato to potato always with a wonderful cheese choice and sourdough crust) and the pastries are to die for. I brought them into my office this past week and they were gone within a few hours. It is way too hard to choose a favorite, between the chocolate things (not for the faint at heart), various scones, pecan rolls, brioche, and various other goodies, what's a girl to do?! I haven't done extensive cheese tasting, but have heard it's pretty much the best place in Berkeley to go. The Cheeseboard Collective (bakery/cheese counter) takes credit and debit cards while the Pizzeria is cash or check ONLY. The line is almost always out the door, so you have a few minutes to grab cash at one of the banks nearby. While seating is limited, the median (despite the signs saying otherwise) is exceptionally popular during lunch on Saturdays or early evenings in the summer. *Little known fact: Sun dried tomato and pesto focaccia is available in the afternoon. Both are excellent but the pesto (which goes VERY quickly, believe me) is unbelievable. Something to remember when you are walking around the gourmet ghetto in the afternoon! read more

Only in Berkeley, a co-op (i.e. "socialist") pizza place that serves only one kind of veggie pizza every day based on locally available produce and always super high-quality cheese. Pizza with corn, great! Pizza with zucchini, fabulous! Today's pizza had squash and kale. It was from outer space! As usual, there was a funky band playing some amazing blues tunes. People sitting on long tables inside, small tables outside, on the curb, on the grass in the median with the big signs saying "Keep Off Median" to be ignored, even by the cops. One super good pizza every day...I don't even bother to ask or look at the chalkboard menu posting..... the only thing that is the same is the crust, which is thin, corn meal based crunchy delicious....honestly, you could just eat this! But if you really need to know what kind of pizza they have on any particular day, they send out one tweet early every morning from @cheeseboard. ok, i'm re-writing my yelp review for cheeseboard because i've actually come back here quite a few times this past couple months and i have to say, i love their pizza. however, my warning is that you do have to get it while it's warm. meaning, you have to stick it out and wait in line and get them fresh. don't have one of your friends buy a whole pizza and take it back home. eat it when it's hot! my personal favorite is the corn with the ricotta cheese. mmm love ricotta cheese. it's soooo good. i also really like the mushroom one, i think it was the shiitake mushroom. anyway, either way, i think you'll be fine when you come here since they change their flavors every day. oh and corn is seasonal so they stop serving corn around winter season. only thing to be mindful, they lather the pizza with oil. i think it' olive oil, the good oil. but still. it literally fills the top of your slice of pizza. also, it's good to get 1 slice, since they give u an extra half slice, which just fills you up. read more

Go for the ingredients that you wouldn't normally order (and wouldn't be able to get anywhere else)--peach pizza tastes great, as does potato pizza, and their Halloween yam pizza! You'll have a blast looking at the menu each week and deciding which day to go in, and once you arrive, you'll love the live music! Don't forget the Papi Chulo sauce...it makes the flavors pop in a delightfully spicy way. I am a huge tomato sauce fan and usually don't go for pizza that doesn't have a large tomato:cheese ratio, but Cheeseboard is the exception because they just have so many fun and delicious ingredients on each of their very special pizzas. There pizza is great and they often have good live music -- piano bass and drums or something along those lines. But what I really like is the original Cheese Board collective next door. At least a couple hundred kinds of cheeses, and they encourage you to taste several varieties of cheese for each chunk you actually wind up buying. Great selection of olives, but the bread is usually what brings me back. Some of the best baguettes and other loaves of French bread anywhere. Acme is the only real competition. Cheese Board's brioche and corn cherry muffins are exquisite, especially when still warm from the oven as the bread often is too. And they have other wonderful pastries - sticky buns, cinnamon twists, and lots of other delicacies. My only complaint of that they don't make croissants. Not of they did, they would be awesome. Love this place. And while I loved the family-run Produce Center next door and their retiring, I am eager to see what Cheese Board does with the space. read more

Simply the Best!!! I just love this place. This is the best pizza I have ever tasted. It is simply amazingly delicious, exquisite, and wonderful. Let me tell you why: 1. The dough is out of this world, so gourmet. I remember it being soft and delicious. Although some people say that it is crunchy. Either way, every time I've gone there, I just loved sinking my teeth into the slice. Oh so yummy. 2. The cheeses are wonderful. I like all of them except for the goat cheese one, whenever they put it on there. 3. The corn one rocks. And so do all their other slices. I usually order two slices, and they always add an extra little slice with each slice. In fact, I usually buy another slice for a homeless person sitting out front, who always receives it with gratitude. 4. I love eating this pizza with a cold bottle of raspberry juice. If you're looking for some of the best pizza I've ever had outside of New York, then you don't need to look further than Cheese Board Pizza. I had some low expectations after my sister told me to try it and held it up at a high regard. I was surprised to be greeted by such a large line of people. The place was packed with customers. It was a Tuesday, and at first, I was bummed out that we didn't have the option to choose the toppings we wanted, but after getting a taste of it, I was pleasantly surprised. I would usually go for a pizza more packed with meat but this was a good change of pace. The pizza was fresh, cheesy and the vegetables complimented themselves very well. The service was also very quick and saved us a lot of time than I anticipated it would take judging by the number of people there. It took us around 12-14 minutes to get our Pizza and the wait was well worth it! read more

For the first time ever, I enjoyed the olives on my pizza. They weren't the nasty canned black sliced olives, they were delicious Kalamata olives. Zesty bits of olive on top of a perfectly baked crust with roasted fennel, goat cheese, swiss chard and garlic. Lots of reviews already so here's the bottom line: great pizza, reasonably priced for high-quality ingredients, very fast and efficient service. The line can look very long, but it moves pretty quickly because each day there's only one pizza option, meaning that there's no hemming and hawing about what to get. That also means if you come on a day where they're making something you're not into, too bad. But you can check out their pizza of the day on their website before you go. Also, they always throw in a bonus slice, which is pretty sweet. They often have live music as well, but there's not a ton of seating. read more

It's been said plenty of times . . but this place makes great pizza. They do only one kind each day so you have no choice but it is always delicious. Once in awhile, they put an ingredient on their pizza that I would not. I don't like heavy toppings like butternut squash on my pizza but when they do it, it is still mighty tasty. I love discovering the way they mix foods that I would never try on my own. For folks who haven't been there, you might like to know that the lines move really fast. I have had many say they don't go because of the line. . . since they only do one pizza, they crank them out nonstop, so the line moves quickly. And it is always worth the almost-always short wait. I probably eat here 300 days of the year (i.e. on an average once, ever day of the year that they are open). The pizza is great and I love the employees. I see a lot of generosity. I'm often given more pizza than I paid for. Every day, when they close up for an hour-and-half in the afternoon, there are homeless folk that gather around, and they are all given slices. The pizza itself is awesome! I suppose, they have some competition from Gioia, which also has very good pizza, albeit totally different. I personally don't really like Sliver's crust, nor their green sauce. I love Cheeseboard's green sauce. Pizza's always vegetarian. Which works for me. Their squash pizzas are my favorites. I got really sick of hearing about this place and decided to try it myself. Even though I knew it was popular, I was still shocked to see a line wrapped around the block. Guess that's how it goes in the gourmet ghetto! I took my turn in line and was glad to see it went by pretty quickly. As soon as I got close to the cashier, I noticed that there was only one choice of pizza. It was actually a huge relief. I am so sick of going to places where you have to browse through an encyclopedia just to order a meal. Plus if they aren't doing a whole lot, they must be doing it well. Sure enough, the pizza and salad combo were delicious! While this place is certainly not diet-friendly, it's a nice variation from the pizza-huts or the fat slices of the world. Umm! So refreshing. We had shifted into our new home and all of us put in all our heart and soul to set it up to perfection. It took us a whole day arranging our things and trying to make it look like a home. This chore had left us drained and exhausted so much that we were unable to move. But there was a quiet desire in all of us - food. But we couldn't say because all of us were tired. But mom and dad are mom and dad. They are made of special stuff. Suddenly we could smell taste and it was more irritating. It was dad with those packets of pizzas from Cheese Board Pizza. It was heaven for us.
