King Philly is their Classic Philly Cheese Steak w/ 50% more cheese and meat. Also ordered onion rings to accompany my Philly. Go big or go home mentality. This place is much cheaper than Amato's but they're smaller. They definitely gave me a lot of meat. It was only $15. The meat and cheese ratio did not match, so most of my bites had meat only. This is one of the best cheesesteaks I've had!!! I use to be a fan of Amotto's but they just kept missing the mark every visit. My BFF and I split the king of Philly, it's twice the filling, and it's to die for!!! We often order fries and onion rings if we're feeling adventurous!!! Delicious with melty cheese just how I like my cheese steaks/hoagies/etc. I think the Half-size with a side of fries is perfect as a lunch combo and I was full for hours later. The Full-Size with a side of fries is a challenge, but if you can finish both then more power to ya. When ordering on the phone I was not asked if I wanted hot or sweet peppers, what kind of cheese, or even which protein I wanted. As a long time Cheesesteak affecianado (of the Pat's Steaks faction in the S. Philly Cheesesteak debate) I am always dubious of West Coast Cheesesteaks. When a friend heard many commercials during Giant's broadcasts she suggested we give this place a shot on our way to see the SJ Giants. A small unassuming place in a strip mall on Monterey Rd., like most good grab-n-gos, there wasn't much in the way of ambiance. They specialize in one thing and their menu accommodates little else; cheesesteaks, accessories, fries, and a vegetarian option. Service was quick, the folks nice, and the food right on. The only difference between this and my cherished Pat's was this steak is chopped, Pat just lays on layers. The roll was soft and soaked up the juices without falling apart, and the flavor was excellent. We'll probably go back before every game, it's cheaper and better than ballpark food. read more

Best cheese steak shop I've ever visited! I visited Philidelphia a year ago and tried the famous Geno's Cheese steak shoo in which I was given poorly made cheese steak. The cheese steak was bland and didn't even have melty cheese. Coming back to the Bay Area, I decided to try this place out. I ordered two Philly cheese steaks in which one was with chicken and the other with steak. The classic philly cheese steak made with Sirloin steak and gooey white American cheese was delicious! The sirloin steak was moist, flavorful, meaty, and tender. The bread was soft, warm, easy to bite into. Lastly, the pepper were perfectly sweet and spicy. In the chicken philly cheese steak the chicken was in crumbles or small pieces. The chicken tasted a lot like chicken sausage. It was exceptionally seasoned and went well with the cheese which was gooey and creamy. Surprisingly, for both cheese steaks the bread wasn't soggy even after sitting for 20 minutes in the paper packaging. Overall, I love the quality of the cheese steaks here! The Cheese Steak Shop always came highly recommended by my little sister and since she was feening for one of these sandwich I finally made the drive. I arrived to one person awaiting for their order and I went directly up to the register. The young gentleman stood at the window with his head down and no greeting given. I gave it a few minutes, thinking he was busy doing something before I spoke up and said "hello". Interaction with this guy was undesirable to say the least and I quickly placed my order for [half] Chillin' Chili with steak fries and a [large] Motown Philly with curly fries. Meals are made fresh to each order so there will most definitely be a wait. CSS has a designated waiting area and they try to limit 6 people in at one time to help maintain social distancing. Food was pretty good and that says a lot coming from someone who doesn't like any kind of philly cheese steak. Steak fries are an absolute must thanks to their signature GUYLIC seasoning. Had the classic combo with curly fries. I enjoyed it - the sandwich did it's job. Nice portions, gooey cheese, nice spice on the peppers and jalapenos. Curly fries were a little bland. The operation was led by a pretty young staff, so I can tell their inexperience translated to their customer service. I would suggest they try a little harder in this department, otherwise, they should consider maybe a food truck model instead of a brick and mortar. I'll be back though. We ordered DoorDash for pickup. The menu was comprehensive and allowed for easy customization in a comments section provided for each item. We arrived at the set time and our piping hot order was waiting for us. My husband and I ordered the basic chicken cheese steak sans peppers (as I said, it was so easy to delete those yucky peppers). It came double wrapped which was good as quite a bit of liquid came out when I unwrapped it. I thought it would be soggy but honestly, the bun was just right. Speaking of the bun, it was absolutely stuffed with chopped chicken (chopped is the best word I can use to describe the chicken - it wasn't ground but was almost shaved. I thought it was steak when I first saw it). The cheese was melted and mixed into the chicken - not gloopy, just right. There weren't a lot of onions but we did add mushrooms and they were quite plentiful. We shared this sandwich and it was more than enough for the two of us. You do have the option of ordering a half sandwich which may be the way to go if you aren't sharing. We also ordered curly fries. Unfortunately they didn't make the trip home very well. They were soggy but that isn't too unusual for fries sitting for about 15 minutes or so. The large was big enough for four of us to share. (Our sandwiches were so large that we didn't really need that many. In fact, we really didn't need them at all). The fries themselves were large - fun to eat a curl that was almost as big as the potato it was cut from. They were seasoned like a typical curly fry. I'm sure they would be just fine if you were eating in but really not so much for carry out. Our friends ordered the "king" cheese steak. It had extra meat and cheese and was colossal. They did opt for the peppers which were so plentiful that they were almost too much. They devoured their sandwich so I guess it must have been pretty good. I was craving a cheesesteak last weekend and decided to try the cheesesteak shop. I tried the King of Philly - Classic cheesesteak with white American cheese and onions. I also tried the steak fries and curly fries. The cheesesteak met with my expectations. Meat, onion and cheese were all chopped up together and had great flavor. The bread had gotten a little soggy with the 30 minute drive back to my house. That is not the store's issue...that's a consistent challenge with this friggin pandemic. To that point the fries were also soggy. But I just put them in a hot oven and crisped them up...no big deal. My son-in-law also had a cheesesteak with provolone, peppers & onions. He ate his in less than 5 mins so I'm convinced he enjoyed the sandwich. His only criticism is he felt it could have used a little more cheese. All-in-all, if you are looking for a solid cheesesteak, I don't think you have to go to Philly...you can get one in south San Jose at the Cheesesteak Shop. I will be back! read more

My family orders from the Cheesesteak Shop on Monterey Rd. At least 1-3 times a month. The last few times we've ordered I've noticed they forgot to add Cajun seasoning to the fries and chips as requested. We ordered again today and I added a note asking if they could please remember to add the Cajun seasoning this time as it's been forgotten the last few times Thank You. It feels a little targeted that the employees would put almost 3 times the amount of seasoning. It's very unfortunate they felt the need to get back at us for a simple request that was nice and had please and thank you in there to make sure it didn't come off mean. I wouldn't normally take it this far but I called and asked to speak to the Manager and they put me on an open hold for 15 minutes before I decided to hang up. Maybe that was done purposely too who knows. Guess we'll have to find a new cheesesteak place because it's unbelievable they would treat some of their usual customers like this. They've never put this much seasoning in all the years we've been going there. A few vegetarian options, which is surprising for a cheese steak shop! I had the original veggie sandwich and my husband had the zesty veggie sandwich. My sandwich was tasty, however it's a LOT of spinach and is filling fast. My husband really enjoyed his sandwich as well.
