Although I was overwhelmed by the variety of cheesecakes when I walked in I went with one chocolate and one non-chocolate. I selected the Chocolate Brownie Turtle and the Crème Brulee. Both were delicious in their own right. The Turtle one could have used a bit more caramel because all I really tasted was chocolate but, ya know not necessarily a bad thing there. The Crème Brulee was great with all the vanilla bean pieces and the crunchy burnt sugar crust. The staff was also very friendly and patient while we tried to make our decision. I saw Cheesecakes by Alex on yelp, and I was super excited to try them. I like all things sweet and cheesecake has a special spot in my heart. The little place is charming. The decor is great, the location is great and is overwhelming to walk into a place with at least 20 different types of cheesecake. I waited in the long line while I tried to decide what kind to get: Pineapple? Kahlua? Apple? so many choices! When it was my turn to order, I was being very friendly to the girl behind the counter and she was very indifferent at best, she looked like she hated her life. I got to the register, and the cashier was even worst, she had a serious attitude problem. I got my pineapple cheesecake and a cup of latte. The latte was super cold so I asked if they could please heat it up a bit. How dare I disturb the employees with a simple request? The girl looked at me and rolled her eyes and took the cup without saying anything. Got my coffee back and I sat down. There is a table right by the window, it was so incredibly peaceful to look out and see the fall leaves in the floor. When I took a bite of my cheesecake, I sadly thought that it was super blend. I feel that it needed something, sugar? flavor? IDK, it didn't taste like anything. Perfection! That's the best way I know to put it! I've been coming to Alex's since he opened many years ago - His Wife, Vera and I worked for the same company for a while and I remember before he opened she'd sometimes bring us in some cheesecakes samples and I'd think to myself - man when you do get that place open it'll be a huge success! AND IT IS! My favorite for many years was the pumpkin - but now I only like it during the Autumn. Now the Bananas Foster and the Strawberries and Cream are amongst my favorite! I used to visit as a special treat - lately I've caught myself going every couple weeks. I've yet to try any of the other bakes goodies and cakes - but friends say they're excellent as well. EXCELLENT. I have tried many cheesecakes and 3 regular cakes from this bakery and I cannot recommend them enough. My favorite? Wow, that's a toss up. It would have to be the Kahlua coffee cheesecake. If I died and went to heaven, they would have this waiting for me as a reward. Of course if I died and went to hell, the devil would be eating it, taunting me because I could no longer eat it. Get the picture? It's freaking gooooood. Of course, so is the traditional cheesecake (slight lemon flavor), the strawberry red velvet cake and the crumb cake. You can't go wrong here no matter what you purchase, seriously. Oh and the restaurant is great for dates--there's a beautiful little patio outside, in downtown Greensboro--so quaint and eclectic. Alex is wonderful, too. He greets customers by name and knows his regulars--that was apparent. His customers seem to be very fond of him, too. Absolutely a must-go place for cheesecakes and other desserts/ baked goods. My fiance LOVES their Kahlua cheesecake. I am personally not much of a cheesecake fan and I usually get the cookies and cream layered cake and/or a blueberry muffin. The cookies and cream layered cake is phenomenal, so fresh and the furthest thing from dry, plus you get a huge slab as a piece. I really enjoy the blueberry muffins, they have a dash of cinnamon and a few nuts to add crunch. Everything is always fresh and the staff are friendly, helpful, and quick with your order! Highly recommend trying them out if you're in the area. read more

It's hard to order dessert when I know I can pickup some cheesecake from here on the way home. My wife and I might do that pretty often. Their chocolate cheesecake is heavenly. If my new year resolution was to eat more cheesecake, I'd be coming here every day. Sadly, I didn't think of that resolution until after I sung by Cheesecakes by Alex, and boy am I kicking myself for that one. Pumpkin, white chocolate raspberry and cookies and cream were the cheesecakes we opted to try. I loved that pumpkin isn't just a seasonal option. White chocolate raspberry is a little on the sweet side, but it will cure those cravings for a sweet treat. The cookies and cream, may be my favorite option I've tried. As soon as I sunk my teeth into a bite, I knew my heat was soaring. With every bite, my problems drifted away. Next time, I'll be enjoying a cup of coffee with a cheesecake while watching the world go by. Don't walk, but run. I can't even imagine how unruly the crowds must be if they sell out of a particular flavor. My personal favorites are the chocolate swirl and the oreo cheesecakes, strawberry red velvet cup cake and cake slice, the Chai cool cap, and finally the cream cheese Danishes. The Deets: Wandering around downtown Greensboro on a recent day trip to that city, I came upon Cheesecakes by Alex before going back to Gaylon Depot for my Amtrak ride back home. I had already finished a great brunch with friends so this find was perfect timing, dessert! Walking in, the shop itself was very neat, clean, and inviting. I snapped a pic of the counter case with all the selections. And the selections...many many of them! Their website says 22 different varieties of cheesecake (two of them seasonal) so that is pretty overwhelming but welcomed nonetheless. In addition to the many cheesecake choices, there are other baked desserts/pastries to choose from in another display case. I was torn between choosing the chocolate chip and the chocolate swirl cheesecake types, and in the end chocolate swirl won out. So off I go to my table with slice and coffee in hand (pic taken) and I enjoy every single bite of that cheesecake slice. The coffee was OK but the main star was the cheesecake as the flavor was great...rich as you would expect cheesecake to be. Just the right amount of chocolate to complement the cheesecake itself without it overpowering the whole slice. The Triple Chocolate Threat and Cookies n Cream cakes...sugar honey ice tea are damn near perfect; three layers of delicious beautiful fluffy moist chocolate cake with the PERFECT CAKE TO FROSTING RATIO and the frosting is nicely sweetened. There are many choices here to choose from, including chocolate, creme brulee, mint, and even just a plain old New York style. All are amazing and well worth the purchase. You can even sit down here to eat a slice of cheesecake and they have hot drinks on sale. However, despite the quality of the cheesecake here, the service and the drinks here are inconsistent. While I found the service to be friendly, it seemed that the women behind the counters were more interested in talking about their domestic issues rather than helping customers on one occasion, while a customer waited patiently in line. Additionally, each time I ate here, I ordered hot chocolate, which varied in quality from rich to a bit watery. This place is the bomb.com and i'm not just saying that because my husband's name is Alex! :) We found ourselves here in the middle of our downtown brewery tour and in need of some air conditioning and the line out the door really couldn't be ignored. We really struggled with the types to go for so I actually appreciated the amazingly long line to be able to see what the locals were picking and make a wise choice but really you can't go wrong. I went with the apple pie cheesecake (I'm thinking about it and drooling right now and it's 8:30 in the morning), and my husband went with the peanut butter ganache. i die. you must stop here on your time in Greensboro! read more

Desserts Galore! So, I was visiting my friend for the weekend and he suggested that we stop in this spot as we were strolling downtown. It was a nice, quiet eatery with tons of cakes, cheesecakes, and other pastries to choose from. I ended up getting a slice of the banana pudding cake, after browsing and chatting with one of the employees for about 5 minutes. The ladies there were very friendly, and checkout was easy. Oh. My. Goodness. So I met someone here for coffee in the morning; it was fairly empty, but all of the employees were incredibly friendly, despite my only getting a (delicious) cafe au lait. I returned in the afternoon, because I just had to get some cheesecake to take back to Raleigh with me. Deciding took many, many minutes. (Employees remained patient and kind, making suggestions when I asked and answering questions with a smile!) Ultimately, I tried both the key lime and the sweet potato souffle - both recommended by the friend I met here. They were each amazing in their own ways! Definitely better than Cheesecake Factory, as well as most other restaurant made cheesecakes. My mom's 50th birthday was ruined by this establishment. We had ordered a chocolate cheesecake for her birthday party and received a peanut butter one. We brought the cake back and when we told them it was the wrong cake for her 50th, there was no remorse and the woman working rolled her eyes and said "oh well". Mind you, it took a week to get the first cake made. They claimed to give us an exchange and claimed we had been given the correct cake. We got back home and once again, peanut butter cheesecake. We drove back and told them it was wrong for the second time and once again no remorse. They did not seem to care that they messed up and didn't offer us our money back or any type of deal. We will never come back here. Third times a charm because we finally got her the correct cake. So, thank you Alex's for taking 45 minutes out of my mom's 50th birthday party and for not caring about your customers. Never coming here again and I do not recommend it to anyone because you won't get what you want and will be treated like you're taking up their time. It's a real shame because we used to come here and get her cake from here every year, but this new management and staff is just dreadful. Parking is an issue often. Hood desserts but you can get cheesecake other places. Alex has never supported nor donated not participated in any philanthropy for downtown or Greensboro. I'm big on supporting businesses that support the community, something he does not. His prices are higher than most cheesecake purchases you find elsewhere. Rating this a 4 because no cheesecake compares to me as the perfect cheesecake unless it's from New York. Yes, I am New Yorker. However, I do love the sweet potato cheesecake ( nothing to what I have had in the past.) The Creme Brûlée is also another hit for me. If you are three people trying their cheesecake and want the same flavour, I would advise you buy the small cheesecake. It would be more bank for your buck. The cannoli are also pretty decent. I stopped into Cheesecakes by Alex before heading to a concert on New Year's Eve. There was a bit of a line, but it moved very quickly. With 10 or so people ordering ahead of me, I still only had to wait 5-6 minutes to get my cheesecake. I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of their cheesecakes were only $4-5 a slice, which is cheaper than I'd anticipated. I opted for the banana foster, which was an amazing choice. There's nothing negative to say about the cheesecake itself. It was a sizable slice, well made, and the chunks of banana throughout added an interesting texture that I particularly enjoyed. I ordered my slice "for here", but when I got it it was packaged to go. I'm not sure if the staff did this in error, or if it was done because they realized they had zero seats left inside at that point. Either way, it worked out to my benefit because I did end up leaving, intending to go eat in my car. When I got outside though, I realized it wasn't quite as chilly outside as I'd thought, so I took advantage of their outdoor seating to eat. Definitely a great stop for a bit of dessert. read more
