I am amazed I have never reviewed this place before. And knowing they are closing down for business tomorrow, I had to come here one more time with my family. This place means a lot to my family and I. We have been coming here before I was born. I have many fond memories of eating here with my grandparents and the delicious food they offered. And finally, I will give it one last hooray before they close the doors. It was packed today, with waiting for lunch taking about 20 minutes before my name was called. I am happy for their business they are getting in the last few days but I would recommend coming here earlier than your anticipated eating time. Family Style Tofu: My all time favorite dish. It is fried tofu in a brown sauce with mixed vegetables. For their lunch special, it came with a bowl of hot & sour soup, fried rice, a crispy spring roll and a fried wonton. All of it was delicious. The tofu was fried perfectly for me and there was ample amount of vegetables. The spring rolls was filling for being vegetarian and the fried wonton was crispy as well. The soup was extra sour, which I personally liked. Although, my one issue was the brown sauce was a bit on the salty side. Still, I throughly enjoyed my meal and had enough leftover for a second one. The Dude and I came to Chef Choy for a family brunch before Chef Choy retirement and you can immediately feel this place has history. Real family restaurant history. You can see the generations and the dudes family has celebrated birthdays, graduations, promotions, and random Tuesday cravings for decades. As a vegetarian, I didn't get to try the meat dishes everyone else at the table ordered, but let me tell you something... the tofu string beans and fried rice were probably some of the best vegetarian Chinese dishes I've ever had. And I do not say that lightly because vegetarian options sometimes get treated like sad side salads The string beans and tofu were flavorful, savory, perfectly cooked, and honestly the star of the table for me. The fried rice was pure comfort food energy. Simple, nostalgic, satisfying. The hot and sour soup personally wasn't my favorite because it leaned a little too tart for my taste, but everyone else seemed to love it. The Fried banana bites with vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle, chocolate drizzle, whipped cream... absolutely unnecessary in the best possible way. Tiny crispy dopamine orbs. Dinning at Chef Choy since 2004 I am sadden that after May 31 of 2026 this restaurant will shut their doors down for business. I am heartbroken that a dynasty restaurant that been serving people in Pleasant Hill for years will say good-bye. I would be eating here in between classes at Diablo Valley College. Chef Choy has gone through different servers and a remodel of the inside. The server that been at Chef Choy for years remembers me. My favorite lunch special at Chef Choy is the Schezwan Chicken. I stopped by on a Thursday to try their lunch plates. OMG! I had one of the best Mongolian Beef & Egg Fried Rice plates ever! It was SO GOOD! It included Hot and Sour Soup, an Eggroll, and a Fried Won Ton. I wish I had discovered Chef Choy restaurant sooner. Good 50/50 portions of Mongolian Beef and Rice. Thinly sliced beef was tender and easy to eat. Fresh fried rice was soft and moist. The service was prompt and attentive with 2-3 servers on the floor. I read Chef Choy has been around for about 30 years. It has a nice asian decor with soft lights. When I was there at 12:45pm, and the place was 70% full. I definitely want to go back, but I better hurry. Sadly, I read an article that said Chef Choy may close in June 2026 because they can't renew their lease. Finally returned after many years, because we were at the strip mall next door and my toddler was hungry. Well, it was lovely. The restaurant was relatively packed for lunch, the folks were lovely and attentive, the food was tasty and it came super fast ( the gentleman helping us said they had 7 people in the kitchen), and we left happy. Went to Chef Choy a couple of times to get takeout items. So far Ive ordered Mongolian beef, hot and sour soup and Wonton soup. All were delicious!!! The Mongolian was flavorful and the meat were tender. I took it home and ate it with white rice! The sauce was tasty and wished it had more! So, both soups were not disappointed, thank goodness! I've ordered takeout from Chef Choy twice now, and it's quickly become a solid go-to for classic Chinese comfort food in Pleasant Hill. Also the guy upfront was super friendly. The Mongolian Beef and Beef Chow Mein were both flavorful and satisfying the beef was tender, and the portions were generous. The Orange Chicken and Sweet & Sour Chicken were also good, saucy, and just the right balance of sweet and tangy without being too heavy. Everything traveled well for takeout, stayed hot, and tasted fresh. The food feels consistent, and you can tell they put care into their cooking. Surprised I haven't tried this place until now. I saw a post in a FB group regarding how this restaurant is very loved but closing this year due to lease issues. What a bummer for the restaurant and their patrons! I decided to order some food to try. I don't order Chinese food often, as I find Chinese food here just doesn't compare anything close to what my grandma used to make. Occasionally, I may make an exception for certain cravings. Hidden gem in Concord -- salt & pepper fish steals the show! I found Chef Choy by accident after my car started shaking and I took the Concord Ave exit. We'd planned to go to Walnut Creek for lunch, but everyone was starving so we parked at Target and walked next door -- best detour ever. The place isn't fancy, but it was packed, which already told me the food had to be good. We ordered chicken fried rice, string beans, salt & pepper fish, Mongolian chicken, and Sichuan shrimp. Everything was generous and delicious -- the salt & pepper fish was hands-down the best fish in the area and absolutely stole the show. The Mongolian chicken was the best I've had, chicken fried rice and string beans were solid, and the Sichuan shrimp was just okay. Service was friendly and welcoming. 3.5. It was good, just not quite my kind of place. I've really been craving good old egg foo young. I had it one local place that was bad (they're out of biz) and one place where it was tasty, but surprising to me, a big wide flat omelet - guess I'm picky. I've always had a rounded thicker pancake or patty, the sort-of flying saucer shape from the bottom of the wok... chef choy serves that. I walked in at lunch, they weren't very busy. I was seated quickly. No egg foo young on the lunch menu, but when I mentioned that to my server, she said they could do it as lunch special. Two minutes later, my hot 'n sour soup was on my table. 75-90 seconds later, my entree plate arrived. When I said "wow, so fast!" Server replied with "seven people in kitchen" (maybe she said eleven?) I didn't notice until later, but the check was placed on my table with my entree. It's a generous portion. I've never had egg foo young with the protein on top rather than in the cooked pancake. I'm guessing it's their efficient method... start all varieties the same, then put different protein on top with sauce. I ordered pork, it came with generous portion, big slices of pork... weird to have to cut into bite size pieces to eat. It was tasty. It occurred to me that it arrived so fast, I wondered if they were partly pre-cooked/prepared... but I guess a small omelet would cook in 2-3 minutes. I paid and was out of there in less than 25 minutes of being seated. Very reasonably priced - I think my lunch plate was $15 + tax. No complaint. I'd recommend the place to someone who likes Cantonese food, and wants lunch in a hurry. But I'll stick to the more flavorful Sichuan places around the area, or what seems like more authentic Chinese noodle or dumpling places. Very good, classic American-style Chinese food! Portions were quite large and price was reasonable. The egg rolls were classic, tasty, crispy, and pretty well-filled and the red sauce on the side was sweet and nice (4 rolls was a good sized serving). The General Tsao's Chicken was really good, with big lean chunks of chicken absolutely slathered in a tangy sweet sauce that had a nice spicy kick at the end. The Ten Ingredients Pan Fried Noodles had, as promised, a wide range of veggie and meat ingredients on top of the crispy noodle nest. That dish could have been a bit more flavorful, but the ingredients were all tasty on their own and nice quality. Definitely ordering from here again to try more items on their quite big menu and possibly even bump this up to a 5 star! read more

We've lived in the area for more than 20 years and I regret not trying Chef Choy until just this weekend - now that it will close at the end of the month. The food is very good, the prices very reasonable and the service very friendly and attentive. My wife and I had lunch specials and we were pleasantly surprised at the quantity and quality of the food. At most places, there's less food but not here. And the quality is the same as if we ordered a'la carte. We opted for fried rice in our specials and, except for not having meat or seafood (this is expected for lunch specials), the rice did not taste like it was half-heartedly prepared just to call it fried rice. We also ordered chow mein a'la carte and it was very good - not greasy at all, very flavorful and very generous in quantity of noodles and protein. The noodles were very good. A lot of the customers seem to be regulars so the atmosphere was quite friendly. We'll probably make at least one more trip here before it closes. We hope they change their mind and decide to reopen elsewhere in the area read more

I ordered shrimp fried rice to go. At first glance I was disappointed in the size but hoy they pack it in there. Healthy helping of shrimp. Most places give you 3-4 pieces of shrimp. There was definitely more then that. Flavor wise could probably be better but it's not the worst fried rice I've had. Compared to other places the flavor was there. Will definitely try again. I came across Chef Choy's and the reviews said come hither, the photos said come join me. So we did. We decided to hit up Chef Choy. The staff here are super sweet and doting, every single one of them. The restaurant itself is a pretty humble carpeted joint, none too modern but I'm not eating their wallpaper, I'm eating their food. And their food was good! I had the veggie Chow Fun and my better half ate his weight in Orange Chicken and we both enjoyed our plates thoroughly. My Chow Fun was good without being greasy, which can be hard to find sometimes. His Orange Chicken was tasty and not soggy. A good time was had by all.
