Best breakfast I've had in a long while. Really nice, clean, quaint spot just down the road a few blocks from Costco. Very happy I found this place today. It's kind of tucked away in a strip mall, but easy to find. They have a really good breakfast menu, both American and Mexican items. I chose the chilaquiles with red sauce and veggies... no meat for me. As you can see it was a huge plate of food and I ate every bit. Service is also really nice. WORTHY OF A FOOD NETWORK SHOW EPISODE SO! It's a Sunday mid-morning, and my wife and daughter want breakfast. I HATE breakfast food...especially EGGS. So, after looking at the lines of the go-to places, I do a deep-scrub search and find this little place in a run-down strip mall in....ermmm....not the most cosmopolitan area of Indy. The reviews look good....so we give it a chance. Walking in, it's what we expected; a low-rent "mom and pop" Mexican place...that also serves a "good" breakfast. We were seated by a very kind (but VERY busy) lady who was doing the best she could. The girls order various breakfast fare, and I go for a couple of tacos (Chrorizo and Asada)...with a Torta to take home for the football game #RISEUP. The tiny place was filling up with people, so I knew we were going to wait for a bit (the wait was NOT terrible). The first good vibe I got was being seated closely enough to the kitchen to hear the cook crack fresh eggs and beat them in a bowl......nice. After a reasonable wait, the nice lady brought out piping hot plates of food. The eggs (from what my girls said) were hot, and fluffy. My daughter's bacon was PERFECT...and my Tacos were HANDS DOWN THE BEST I HAVE HAD IN INDY the Chorizo taco had me asking the local Mexican place near my work if they had anything like that (they didn't...dangit). The Torta was PERFECT and STUFFED with fresh EVERYTHING. We all gobbled up our food, and I was nearly SHOCKED with the low price. After having a friend rave about Chef D's following a couple of recent visits, I decided to take a relatively quiet Sunday and visit the relatively new restaurant on the Northwestside of Indy at 83rd & Michigan Road in a strip center next to Big Lots. Officially known as Chef D's Breakfast, this is my latest in a growing line of breakfast-centered restaurants I've been visiting. Unlike most visits, I actually opted for breakfast this time around despite the fact it was nearing noon. Being located in a strip center, Chef D's does have curb cuts in their sidewalk. Surprisingly, while they have accessible parking spots in their lot they're actually not ADA compliant as they lack the usual metal signs (in Indiana, the metal signs are required for the spots to be legally enforceable). That said, I had no trouble finding a spot and the access was solid enough to not be a problem. The glass door going into Chef D's is a little heavy, but the friendly server was at the door ready to help by the time I got there. This is another "hole-in-the-wall" establishment. As you enter, you're immediately in the dining area and the cooking area is beyond toward the back. There's also a hallway where the restrooms are available (and they are accessible - I checked!). I didn't count how many tables are in Chef D's, but it couldn't be more than 12-15 tables that do offer some flexibility. The decor is incredibly simple yet it felt comfortable and was definitely clean. Chef D's is a minority owned business, I believe, and can easily accommodate both English and Spanish speaking customers. In fact, I was pretty impressed with the diversity of the clientele in the small restaurant including a decent number of interracial couples. As is rather obvious, Chef D's specializes in breakfast including both traditional American and Mexican options. The menu is fairly simple - pancakes, French toast, omelettes, a few specific Mexican options, a few $4.99 options, and a kids menu plus some side items. They do serve lunch items including burgers, a few sandwiches and, once again, some Mexican items. It took me a little while to catch on that they'd recently started serving dinner and are open until 9pm - their door still says 3pm. While it's easy to eat for under $10 for breakfast or lunch, it should be noted that the dinner menu tends to run $10-14 for a variety of meals. I ordered their 3 pancake special along with a side order of turkey sausage and my usual unsweetened iced tea. I will admit that there were a couple different times when I found myself leaning toward a 4-star rating - one of them was when the meal came out. While the pancakes were abundant, the $3 order of turkey sausage seemed a bit slight with three modestly sized links (traditional sausage was only $2.50). The order size is fairly traditional for sausage/bacon, but it just "looked" modest on a larger plate. Then again, Chef D's isn't really obsessed with presentation. It was a good sign when I was waiting on my meal and one table rather loudly announced as they were getting ready to leave "That was awesome." While I might have had an issue with serving size, the food itself was terrific. The three pancakes were large, yet not overwhelming. They were perfectly created with a fluffiness and taste that just really hit the spot. Those modest sausage links? They had a definite kick to them and were absolutely terrific. The iced tea was great and I did get my always desired refill. If I were rating Chef D's solely on food, I'd already be somewhere in the 4-5 range. In fact, it feels a bit weird to rate a "hole-in-the-wall" as a 5-star restaurant and I'm afraid I may build it up too high. Here's the thing, the service was stellar. I mean stellar. I relatively quickly caught on that the crowd surprised people a bit and there was only one server working the floor. This guy who had helped me with the door was also serving EVERY table, running the cash register, and generally running the floor. While he certainly had kitchen help, this guy absolutely kicked butt and never lost the smile on his face. People got their refills, he acknowledged you even if he had to make you wait a minute, and I was constantly amazed at how well he treated everyone. There are more than a few restaurants in Indy who could learn things from this guy (whose name I never caught). He not only treated me incredibly well, but I watched him interact with everyone and he was top notch all the way. I didn't hear complaints, as all too often happens in restaurants, I just so a guy absolutely work his butt off to do his job and make people satisfied. I was way beyond impressed. "Hole-in-the-wall" or not, for the service alone there's no choice but to give Chef D's a 5-star rating. I experienced the true definition of excellent customer service. While Chef D's may not have the dazzling atmosphere or luxury dining, what it does serve up is priceless. read more

Haven't been in here for a couple of months and like finding a new place. Same hole in wall between Big Lots and Enterprise cars but with a new menu with additional items . The food is fresh and everything is made on site and to good for words. Chef D's is so authentic you may hear a toddler fussing in back on Sunday morning. I wanted to try somewhere new for Mother's Day breakfast this year. After reading the reviews for this place, I decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. I ordered the Biscuits Special which was 2 biscuits with sausage grave, eggs, and hashbrowns. The biscuits and gravy were excellent. I had no complaints about my breakfast. My husband ordered Three Golden Brown Pancakes and he was happy with his meal. My daughter had a pancake and a fruit bowl. I was pleasantly surprised by the fruit bowl. It was loaded with strawberries, blueberries, red and green apples, and cantaloupe. The prices are pretty cheap. We will be coming back. read more

I had passed this little strip mall restaurant numerous times and had been meaning to try the food. Today I wasn't in the mood for any particular style of food so I stopped in for lunch. Don't let the name fool you, they do have a lunch menu. As other reviewers have stated, this is a Mexican influenced little restaurant. I think I counted 10 tables. The décor is lacking with painted ceiling tiles, older furniture and what looked like European village pictures on the wall, but overall clean. The menu has numerous offerings but not so many that makes it confusing. The first thing I noticed on the menu were the tacos. I eat Mexican street style tacos quite often in the area and the price generally run $2-$2.25. Chef D's had them priced at $2.50. Not a big difference but something to compare with other restaurants in the area. I wanted to try a number of dishes on the menu but opted to order the enchiladas (chef's special). They aren't something that I generally order at Mexican restaurants but the ingredients can tell a lot about a restaurant. The lunch came with 3 enchiladas. I was pleasantly surprised that the tortillas were corn. They are usually wheat for ease of wrapping. The chorizo in the enchiladas was very good and not greasy. The red and green sauces over the enchiladas were both very flavorful and definitely homemade. Refried beans, rice and salad were on the side. These are usually an afterthought in many Ameri-mexican restaurants. The beans and rice here were very flavorful and the beans actually had texture and weren't just baby food smooth. The ingredients in the shredded lettuce salad were all fresh. The service was prompt for the most part. I did have to wait a while for a refill while the person serving me went into the kitchen and was talking with what I assumed was the cook. The homemade food that I had would probably rank a 5, but all of the prices seemed a little high especially in an area that has numerous Mexican restaurants. I ended up paying $12.40 for the enchiladas and a drink including tax. I am used to spending around $10 eating out for lunch so the price (relative to the food) dropped my rating 1 star. I really want o go back for breakfast and try some of their breakfast offerings. read more

Chimichanga was perfectly crunchy while split with green sauce and a bandera sauce. Somewhat spicy but a great balance of you ask me! Coffee was smooth tasting as well. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad reviews but my omelette is terrible. My boyfriend lovingly surprised me with the meat lovers omelette that happens to be so salty that I believe I should start a course of high blood pressure medication and Lasix ( a water pill) to defuse the heart attack bomb that was set off after the first bite of this thing. Yes the eggs are fresh and are not an egg product, but the meat could easily have come from your neighborhood Aldis. The English muffin, should be called an English device of medieval torture as it nearly broke several of my front teeth. My coffee was cold, the biscuits and gravy were average, and pancakes were disappointing. There was no soap in the bathroom which makes me question where the chef was washing his hands. Came in here because of the convenience to my house and close to expressway. I got the biscuits and gravy with hash browns . The hash browns had a good portion size and were nice and crispy just how I like them. But the real plus was the biscuits and gravy. They arrived steaming hot. Always a good sign . The biscuits were tender and flaky. And the sausage gravy was flavorful and creamy. And for only $5! The only minus is that I was unaware of how much the charge was for coffee $2.25. Not an issue just a surprise . It was tasty as well.Next time I would ask for the pot at the table. I would recommend coming here as it overall enjoyable . read more

My daughter and I decided to try this place out after her early morning cardiologist appt. At peyton manning children's hospital because it was close, had breakfast, and was a Mexican restaurant. Aside from the traditional huevos rancheros, we dont see alot of breakfast dishes in mexican restaurants for some reason...this must stop!!! I NEED food like this in my life. My daughter had the quesadilla poblano and I had the burrito poblano. The food was GOOD not mind blowing fantastic, just really, really good. I am in love with the idea of using the poblanos so heartily in these dishes. Neither one of us missed any breakfast meat at all in our dishes because the poblanos served as the meaty part to this dish. We will definitely be returning during our next check up in town. My only 'complaints' would be....the chef needs to use just a touch more salt when cooking....and maybe get a little more creative with some dishes. Maybe some mole and eggs? Our go to for solid, cheap breakfast without ridiculous wait times. Can stroll in at 10am on a Saturday and sit down no problem. In the middle of a strip mall in a not so glamorous part of town, but if you're willing to trek over, you'll be pleased with their brunch/mexican offerings. Plenty of free parking. Nice breakfast spot located behind Studio Movie Grill next to Big Lots. The restaurant is relatively small but the food is excellent. The staff is very friendly. You can order online for take-out. They offer good breakfast options without breaking your the bank. I haven't tried there lunch menu. But they do offer both lunch and breakfast all day. read more
