Stopped by for brunch and left very satisfied. This spot has been on my list for awhile and I'm only mad I waited so long to try it. They're serve classic American breakfast dishes but also very delicious Mexican breakfast. Everyone at the table really enjoyed their dish and most plates were clean/empty. The only thing I was t super impressed with was the empanadas, the guava/cream filling was very good but the pastry itself was dry. I had the potato/chorizo dorado tacos. It was with rice and beans which were both very good and flavorful. The tacos came fully dressed with cheese and crema. Also inside a Molcajete drowning in delicious salsa. We had a great experience at the restaurant. Came in on a Saturday morning for some grub. Menu was huge and plenty of options for drinks, especially the ones with alcohol. Our waiter efficiently sat us down and gave us the menu and sometime to think about what we wanted. It was still quiet since it was 8am. But the music was nice in the background. We opted to share the Philly cheese steak. It was huge and came with a large side of crispy shoestring fries. We both shared this. I got a fresh squeezed orange juice and it was just that. Tasted so good. Then our waiter asked if we wanted to get a dessert and we opted for the guava and cheese. The pastry was soft and not too sweet, which is what I liked. Great casual spot in dtsj for brunch/brekkie! Came here with my girls for a quick brunch after our yoga sesh and was very happy we did - legit had no idea this place existed. We were seated outside immediately and didn't have to wait, but granted it was a bit early for the weekend. Portions were pretty large and menu had a good variety - loved that they had Mexican style brekkie dishes which was my craving for the day. My friend got an omelet which looked fair (didnt taste it), but I opted for the huevos rancheros which was tasty! Meh. Not the best breakfast but also not the worst. My friends each got an omelette and U got a chorizo scramble. We all thought it was just okay. Honestly I am very disappointed. I had really high hopes. I come in the evenings and the dinner food is great! But this was my first time for breakfast and I was really disappointed . The Cafe de Olla was really sad, it tasted like hot water. Barely any cinnamon flavor and you could not at all taste any coffee in it. I had the chilaquiles red/green with hash browns, The hash browns tasted so bad they were dry and so crispy they were drenched in oil. The Chilaquiles and their sauces red and green were okay, the piece of steak they gave was all fat and nerve. They didn't ask how I wanted the steak, they brought out the steak medium rare, which I don't have a problem with but the fact that it was placed on top of the chilaquiles and blood was starting to accumulate on top of the steak, was just not appetizing to me. My husband had the menudo. He said it smelled like when the Tripe has not been washed properly. If you know how to make menudo you will understand what I am trying to say. The tripe has to be properly washed and cleaned prior to cooking. You can't just boil this type of meat without washing it. So the menudo gave off an unpleasant odor. I understand that everything is very expensive now. But perhaps the owners should consider making less items on their menu so that the ones they do put out are of better quality. I didn't even buy any empeñadas because I was so disappointed with my breakfast. $70 for 2 for food I could barely eat. Very disappointing. read more

My sister brought us here on a Friday morning & what a pleasant experience! Our waiter was super friendly & checked on us every so often to make sure everything was good. I had the Breakfast Enchiladas: Sauce roja with delish shredded chicken in fresh tortillas, great breakfast papas with a couple scrambles eggs. WOW, soooo good! Check your empanada for mold! We stopped by for breakfast and got chilaquiles and a chicken and mole empanada. Enjoyed our chilaquiles (do try this if you stop by), and were wrapping up our meal with the empanada when we discovered a chunk of fuzzy blue grey mold in the MIDDLE of the empanada about 1" in length and 3/8" wide. The empanada was already cut in half and wasn't showing from the outside or the cut area, but the mold was in one half of the empanada and I broke the other half which was normal looking. Thankfully we spit it out, and didn't eat the bite that we took. The waitress had offered to replace it but we said no because we were so shocked. We were kind of disappointed that the manager didn't try to come and address the issue with us. Just left it to their serving staff who quickly cleared our table and gave us the check. The menu has traditional western breakfast, Hispanic dishes and variety of drinks (coffee, mimosas, aqua Fresca and more). I got the California eggs Benedict which was delicious. I think generally my party felt the food wasn't the best they've had, but was good enough to try again. Stands out for me were the side of order of sausage links which came with like 5 links! I liked that the cafe de la olla came with a side of cinnamon syrup for me to pour to my liking. Micheladas come in those nice standard goblets which I appreciate. I was quickly greeted and was able to get a table without any issues. I appreciated that this place wasn't crazy busy for being a brunch spot. I have to say 5/5 for the service the guy handing out the take out order was really friendly and great, however the food I ordered (specifically empanadas) was dry and the seasoning used for the ground meat empanada was sour (not food poisoning sour but the flavor was not good) and the ham and cheese empanada was completely dried out and basically like eating an empanada with nothing in it there was barely any meat and cheese. Thus, in terms of the empanadas, I think they could try altering the recipe a little to make them more softer, juicy and flavorful because it unfortunately tasted too doughy and I had to keep drinking water after each bite to counteract the dryness. Cook Me Up Born out of the pandemic, Cheff Che is the brainchild of Mexico City born Chef Julio Garcia. It began as a way to survive the trying times of 2020 by making Empanadas out of his garage and has quickly turned into a full-fledged Mexi breakfast joint along The Alameda. The Good: *I love that their menu is primarily modern takes on Mexican breakfast items, and they're done really well. The concomitant bacon wrapped stuffed Jalapeño is a nice touch that comes with every dish. *Outdoor seating *Empanadas lived up to the hype, as the crust was flaky and so tender. *Strawberry Horchata wasn't as sweet as it looked and had great, almost, Strawberry Quik®-like flavor. *Border Skillet was fantastic, seasoned expertly, and shockingly, the taters were cooked perfectly. So often, the taters are almost always undercooked at most breakfast places that it's almost confounding. The chorizo scramble and the chilaquiles were both solid. The hash browns were crispy and salted well and the eggs were cooked well and to a good texture. Not a good experience! I came here yesterday on a Saturday morning around 10:30 am to have brunch with a friend whom I haven't seen in a long time. First table was a very small cocktail table so we moved to a bigger table and it was very wobbly so we moved one more time to a stable table. No big deal. We sat down and a woman with an orange top came by and handed us menus and asked if we wanted water. We said yes and I asked if she could please wipe down the table because it was very dirty. There was dried egg yolk on my side and crumbs all over, still no biggie we assumed someone must've just left the table before we got there. We waited a while for our drink order but still ok cause we were catching up. I ordered a che'bela and my friend ordered lemonade and a mole empanada. They brought our drinks out. I immediately noticed that my drink didn't have anything on the rim and when I went to take a drink it was lukewarm. We waited for a waitress but she wasn't around so we asked the lady in orange if she could please take my drink back. She came back with a visibly ice cold drink and tajin on the rim. About 5 minutes later the waitress brought out plates and utensils and first thing we saw were big food stains on the plates. This wasn't a little spot it was big going all across the plate so we had to call the waitress and ask her to replace the plate. She saw the plates she said oh wow. The waitress came back to take our order but we told her we were waiting for the empanada to make a decision. At this point we were debating to continue to eat here. The empanada finally arrived. I grew up eating and making empanadas with my mom so I have a pretty good idea of how they should look and taste. My friend took a look and said that does not look appealing and said I don't want any so I split it in half and noticed the meat looked very dry but the mole had a good taste to it. I picked it up to take a bite and told her it didn't feel warm. Took one bite and spit it out. The chicken was barely warm, like they nuked it in the microwave and let it sit for too long. The chicken tasted like it had been in the fridge for longer than it should be and was very dry. At this point we decided not to order any more food and just pay for our drinks. The waitress came by and my friend was irritated so she asked to speak to the manager but the waitress replied the manager was not there. So we told her about the empanada and asked for the check for the drinks. She brought the check and it had a che'bela and michelada on it so once again we had to call the waitress and tell her we did not order a michelada. She looked annoyed with us and my hope is it was with someone inside and not us, because we were trying to be kind every time something happened. She came back and dropped the new check and walked away, didn't say anything. Which made me realize she never once came to check on our table every time we had to call her or ask the other lady to call her. The lady with the orange shirt came by and apologized for all the trouble. I wish I had gotten her name because she gave the better service checking on us and just having a pleasant attitude. And I don't think she is a waitress but i could be wrong. I don't like to complain but I can't eat an establishment where it is visibly dirty and they don't seem to care or even apologize for those issues. The waitresses appeared to be more annoyed that we were bringing the issues to their attention. I've worked in a kitchen for busy restaurants. I know how hard people work to run the business but I also know that bringing out dirty dishes and chicken that is not heated properly is an absolute no. This place has really good reviews and always looks busy so don't know what happened on this morning, but it definitely turned us away from it. We went to las casuelas around the corner, a restaurant that has been there for 30 years and everything from the service to the chicken in our meal was a complete 180. The service is very fast and friendly! We had 8 people and there isn't a whole lot of seating inside but they moved together 3 tables for us. They took our orders quick and checked in throughout the meal, and even gave us free empanadas for giving a shout out to their social media account. The empanadas are made fresh daily and they were very sweet and the flavors were great! Mango and the cheesecake filled were personal favorites of mine. However, the hot food itself was so so. They serve classic breakfasts, crepes, skillets and Mexican specialties, plus a nice selection of Mimosas, micheladas, margaritas, beers, and more. They are also known for their empanadas, and I guess I'll have to try those next time! We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs, served w/choice of country potatoes or hash browns and choice of toast, $20.99, and Fried Chicken & Waffle, $16.99. I was expecting one piece of chicken, but what arrived was 4 pieces of hot fried chicken on top of my yummy waffle. I also asked for a small side of gravy for my chicken. My first bite of chicken was heaven! I like my food hot, and you could tell the chicken had just come out of the fryer. It was crispy and moist to the bite! It was sooooo yummy!!! If you can, sit in the front dining area. The cushioned bench seats along the wall by the bar in the back are not deep enough and there isn't leaning space against the straight black wall for comfortable sitting. The menu offered the typical brunch fare with a few Mexican twists. After some contemplation, I opted for: Countryside Benedict (3/5): The combo of fried chicken and benedict is not something I see often so I was very excited! Solid Mexican American-food-forward cafe - the brunch was very good. Our party ordered a wide variety of items from the Mexican and Western menus; everyone in the party walked away stuffed and happy.
