Amazing South Indian food. They have a large menu with plenty of yummy options to choose from. We had their palak paneer which was so creamy and smooth mixed with fresh paneer cubes. The Chennai coffee helped wash everything down after the meal was over. Their dosas are massive! And the aloo filling inside is perfect. The Uttapam with mushrooms & onion was an excellent choice. Visited on a Sunday evening for a quick bite before a show. I know it's unusual not to get a dosa at a place named after it, but the Puri Potato Bhaji was delicious. The Chili Paneer was also tasty, but I would have preferred a bit more spicy. The standout for me was the Gobi Manchurian (cauliflower) -- easily among the best I've had. The restaurant is entirely vegetarian and offers super reasonable prices. Parking lot isn't huge but there's street parking nearby too. Yum! read more

I'm not a huge fan of dosas, and this place makes pretty good ones. The Paper Masala Dosa is very big and can be filling by itself. I also had the Somosa Chat which I thought wasn't bad. Lots of seating available. Service was pretty bad though. read more

Chennai is a beautiful and bustling city in the south of India 8360 miles east of New York or a 12 hour non stop plane ride on a jet doing 690 miles per hour. The Dosa is a delicious, huge crepe made with rice and lentil batter with different fillings - potatoes, peas, meat, etc. Chennai Dosas is a lovely, warm and fun restaurant right here in Hicksville, Nassau County in NY about 24 miles east of Manhattan. It boasts an extensive menu of authentic and I emphasize authentic, the real deal southern cuisine featuring 37 varieties of these stellar dosas that will make you smile and do the Dosa Do Si Do dance.( 2 menu photos). You can go healthy with the spinach one or get the one with cheese and mushrooms, maybe the veggies on top or my favorite- the gunpowder Dosa that will bring tears to your eyes with smoke coming out of your ears. Every single dish is made to order and per the customer's specific request. I ordered the garden soup with lentils and veggies and asked that it be prepared mild. 17 minutes later I was loving this steaming bowl of goodness and flavor that was so fresh and tasty and nourishing. The best soup I have had in a long time. The appetizers were amazing - idlis( steamed rice cakes in the photo) were divine. The vadas( same photo) or lentil flour donuts with the accompanying sambar( lentil soup) and sauces or chutneys were just amazing - crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth goodness on the inside. The coffee was hot n fresh. The accompanying dessert- the halwa ( thick paste from flour, butter, saffron, rose water and yes Love) also brought tears of joy to my eyes, again! The staff was absolutely magnificent- kind, humble yet so efficient, aware and alert, treated us like gold, 24 kt that is. The prices were really good with an average of $19 plus tip per person. They have a separate dining room for big parties. I have hosted a group of 15 there with our private and uninterrupted space and two amazing and attentive team members spoiling us. They are open daily from 11:30 am to 10:30 pm. Get over to Chennai Dosas in Hicksville and do the Dosa Do Si Do. I just saved you that 12 hour trip to Chennai. read more

Store in a strip mall. The Gobi Manchurian is v pretty good. It was very crispy, nice little kick..I liked it. I got the Chennai rava masala dosa... it was mildly spicy. Parts were so crispy, they broke.. other parts were wet and soggy... the sambar was delicious, so very good. The coconut chutney was good, but mildly flavored.. there was also a red coconut chutney, it was pretty good. The service was quick and efficient... This should really be a 3.5 stars... read more

Food was good. Basic Indian fare with no meat / chicken / fish . But service was cold and rushed. (Restaurant was near empty) It felt like the REAL staff was in the back; bound and gagged and the restaurant was hijacked by goons. LOL. Basic medium prices. NOTE: Unlike MANY Indian restaurants: they do NOT close at 4 PM and then reopen at 5 PM. So if you are an early bird for dinner and want to avoid crowds there's that . Parking lot gets cramped / tight by 5 PM. Not sure if there was parking in the back of the strip of stores. read more

At first glance, it doesn't appear to be very filling but once you start digging into the 3 sauces and spicy soup that comes with the dosa you'll be surprised at how full you feel. Came here for the dosas which were pretty good- lots of options to choose from. The samba it came with was delicious and they gave us extra to go. The vadai and the mango lassi were also great. They also gave us an extra vadai which was nice of them :) they have a decently sized seating area that is pretty casual. read more

Ambiance (3/5): The establishment setup is bare bones and gives off cafeteria vibes. The simplistic setup did give the place a homey feel. Noise levels were low and plenty of lighting. Parking lot in the front. The restaurant was almost full by 7:30 on a weeknight. There's also additional seating on the other side of the main dining area. Service (4/5): We had a bit of difficulty getting their attention when ordering and getting additional napkins. The food came pretty quickly after ordering. Food: Assorted Appetizers (2/5): This included 2 each of the samosa, pakora, bajjia, vada, and spring roll. Expect a platter of mostly thick chickpea fried batter and a small piece of veggie or cheese inside. I really liked the samosa! I was a fan of the coconut chutney and sambar. The lentil soup was a bit bland for me. Malgudi Rava Masala (2/5): Out of the huge dosa, there was only stuffing in 1/5 of the dosa. Of that stuffing, there was probably only a cup worth of masala. The spices were enjoyable but it did not really help provide flavor to the dosa itself. Halwa a la Mode: (4/5): This was very unique! I loved the warmed and sweet almond paste. This wonderful restaurant has a variety of dosas, plus many other delicious veggie options. In fact, it's all veggie, so you don't have to worry if you want to avoid meat. Try the eggplant baigan bartha, and any of the rice dishes. The Mysore masala dosa is spicy without being too hot. The atmosphere is simple but cozy, and it's very clean. I don't particularly like dosas. The dosas here are solid for what they are. I come here again and again for the vendaikai kuzhampu. It's a spicy okra stew curry that is absolutely one of the best dishes I've had in the New York metro area. I've never had or seen anything else like it. The okra curry was unfortunately, rather bland. It didn't have pungent flavors, no tang or heat, and really fell flat. I found the sambar and rasam to be a bit unbalanced. The roti was stale. Across the board would've loved more spice, more acid, and more seasoning. Howver; I really liked the kootu lentil stew, it had splendid flavor. The poriyal was tasty and fragrant of curry leaf and mustard seed. I also found the service a bit slow and uninterested. Come here to South Indian food and dosas :). Chat may not be S. Indian but we like the bhel puri and dahi vada. Some of our favorites are the masala dosa, the Rava dosa and pongal. The food is delicious and staff are polite and attentive. I went there twice this week. Gobi Manchurian (appetizer, somewhat reminiscent of a good quality Asian sweet and sour chicken, though this is made of crispy cauliflower), Malai Kofta, Matar Paneer, Chana Saag, Palak Paneer - all incredibly delicious. You can choose spicy or mild with many if not most dishes. Atmosphere is pleasant. Certified kosher by r'Asher Schechter and listed by Young Israel of Plainview. Prices are very reasonable.
