The wait on KC's Rib Shack was 45 mins, so we decided to try the new Chinese restaurant Chen's Gardens across the street. Our usual spot is Taipei Tokyo just 100 yards down the street in Bedford. As we arrived we were seated immediately. It all started to fall apart from there. They took 10 minutes to take our drink order, another 10 minutes to take our food order. I was already wishing I hadn't cheated on my friends at Taipei Tokyo. We all ordered sweet & sour soup, but my entree arrived before the soup. In fact ALL our food arrived one plate at a time before the soup. Painful! The portions were way too small. I had KP Beef, my wife had Orange Beef, and my children had Chicken. All with only one small bowl of rice, it had to be white rice because they charge extra for brown rice. The taste was OK, kinda like at the Mall. What wasn't ok was the bill almost $60.00 dollars (only soda) for what seemed like lunch portions. So I left immediately hungry, not the usual 45 minutes. I've learned my lesson on straying. Perhaps the only reason my review of this restaurant is not higher is based on a combination of the price and the portion size. My husband and I came here for dinner after I stopped by to pick up a takeout menu. I was immediately interested when I saw the same woman from Peking Garden here, and found that they now have opened this location. My husband ordered the Happiness Delight and a small Won Ton Soup. I ordered the Orange Beef, and we split an order of Pork Fried Rice and Crab Rangoon. In addition to these items, he ordered a beer and I ordered a Blue Hawaii. Our total bill was $56, and in my opinion this was pretty steep for Chinese. The food was very fresh and everything tasted good. I would probably not order the Orange Beef again because the sauce it was made from was very sticky and actually stuck to my teeth like a melted Jolly Rancher. Less than appealing. In addition, our food came out at two separate times. I'm a huge fan of places that cook an entire ticket to be served at the same time, and even if the plates are separated by two minutes that speaks of poor communication to me. Either the kitchen isn't talking to one another, or the front of house isn't talking to their kitchen. Like I said earlier, everything we had was quite good but there isn't a whole lot of it. I think that in the future if we wanted an upscale Chinese dinner I'd probably stick with Szechuan House on Valley St. Otherwise we'll just keep going to their other location, Peking Garden, as the food is much more reasonably priced. They also don't have a tremendous amount of parking, or least did not seem to when we went because as we went to leave we found that people were parked on the street for this place. read more

The best Chinese food I have had in a long time! The service was great, our waiter was very friendly and attentive. The food was amazing. We had the crab rangoons which were so flavorful, we also had the vegetable lo mein (it was made with thinner noodles than usual which I really enjoyed), and also we had the mango chicken. I was anxious to try this newly opened/constructed restaurant. The seating area is medium sized. It is a Chinese/Japanese establishment. I ordered takeout off of the luncheon menu. What is different in this menu is that they do not provide some sort of appetizer with their entree. They do have the soup and choice of rice. Their luncheon choices are limited. I ordered a beef with vegetables and a General Gao's chicken. Both were ordered with pork fried rice and hot/sour soup. Their soup was one of the better ones I have tasted. It has a number of different types of mushrooms in it. I did not like their rice as it is short grain and had the texture of couscous. The General Gao's was in a sweet sauce and more like sweet sour chicken. The beef with vegetables had limited vegetables and was somewhat tough. Since they did not provide an appetizer I ordered an egg roll and boneless spareribs. The egg roll was nothing spectacular but the ribs were thinly cut and tasty. I would be hard pressed to return there as close by is the Tokyo Taipei restaurant in Bedford that is far better for the value and allows you to have any menu entree listed as a luncheon item with soup/rice and an appetizer included. read more

Chen's is new and there is work to be done. However, I think other reviews of this place have been too harsh based primarily on price and comparisons to Taipei and Tokyo. I think there is room for both restaurants. Chen's has a great bar and I love it because there is room to spread out when eating alone. The room is also quieter so good for conversations. Taipei and Tokyo is better for going with a larger group or when you want to see and be seen among the Bedford folks. The quality of the food is good although a couple of my sushi platter pieces were a bit dry. They are working out the kinks so give it a try. read more

Delicious food at an affordable price. The service was welcoming and caring about your experience. Restaurant itself is appealing, relaxed yet up-to-date. Family during the day, kick it later with friends. Food: My family and I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll, Vegetable Maki Roll, Lo Mein and Miso Soup. They came out so fast! While the sushi here is wonderful, I will NEVER be back due to the unacceptably awful service. If you are a restaurant employee and you take a takeout order and then charge your customer for all the elements, you should make sure the order is complete before they leave. You SHOULD CERTAINLY NOT blame the customer when YOU didn't give THEM a portion of their order, and when someone drives all the way back to pick up the missing pieces that you didn't offer to refund the money for or deliver, you should AT MINIMUM offer a VERBAL APOLOGY. AT MINIMUM. FURIOUS with Chen's abysmal service. Lost my entire lunch hour fixing a mistake THEY made. Soup was cold by the time I got it. Absolutely NO APOLOGIES made by the staff for the error - not even a simple, "We're sorry for the inconvenience." Rude, rude, rude. Called back to complain and was told the manager would not be back until June. Absolutely no concerns or remorse expressed for the error, just continued blame. Ridiculous. My wife is addicted to sushi, this is one of her favorite places in manchester. Always excellent service and the sushi is always chilled and fresh. It is a small establishment with a 360 bar. We usually sit at the bar and enjoy some of the great drinks they have to offer. The food here is amazing as well. Flavorful, hot and huge portion sizes. Prices are right on point. The food is "okay" which for Manchester Chinese Food means "very good" but compared to Boston...it's average... BUT it's extremely very clean. I have gone here now about 6 times for take out and I would definitely eat in because the decor is so nice. Yum! I love Chinese food here. When we moved away from Manchester, I was disappointed with the lack of Chinese food where we live now, so I still go back to Manchester to get Chen's. I like that they give you a soup with your combo plate. You can substitute items also for a small price, like a few cents more. Which is nice, since I know a lot of chinese places don't allow this. My husbands gets the sushi here and he says it is really good. The food is always really good here! I recommend this place for sure! read more

Went here for lunch with a coworker and got the szechuan chicken lunch special and coworker got the General Gau's lunch special. Both came with fried rice (you can pick pork, chicken or veggie) and soup (we both got wonton). All of the food was delicious, fresh and hot. Even better, their lunch specials are only $8.95! We have LOVED Chen's Garden as our favorite restaurant for over 8 years. Since Covid we have understood the problems that all dining establishments have faced, but things seemed to be getting better. When we arrived, the restaurant was about 1/4 to 1/3 full. We were seated immediately and then waited twenty minutes to have anyone approach us. We finally got waters and sodas. We each, 3 of us, ordered one appetizer, pan fried dumplings, 3 soups and 3 dinners: two # 7's from the " all day specials list and sesame chicken. Two lukewarm soups arrived and after a looooong wait, the third arrived at our table along with the appetizer. By that time the first two soups were cold. Two dinners arrived followed by a long wait. The food was as good as any served at Chens's. An hour and a half after our arrival we received our bill for $73.00. Before tip. No alcohol was I included. We were shocked, disappointed and very sad. read more

This is terrific Chinese food! We ordered at noon for a 630pm pickup on Christmas Eve, and although it took a bit longer to pick up our food (there seemed to be a snafu with how they were matching orders). The food was absolutely amazing! I cannot wait to return to Chen's! read more

My date suggested Chen's for sushi Friday night. Nice little place with a large bar area. They had a big menu. The place was pretty full with it seemed like all locals. We ordered a baby octopus app. I liked it. my date not so much. everyone's different. We got a sushi combo platter and some lo mein. The sushi was very good and the noodles were very fine ones. A large roll with freshly cooked shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber cut into 8 pieces. 1 1/2 stars for Szechuan Lamb that was mostly celery with too large pieces of bland, flavorless and very tough lamb. Sushi here is utterly devine. Try the creamy crab and amazing roll! The prices are very comparable with other Sushi and Asian cuisine places around town, but it feels like you are getting so much more for your money here. Excellent sushi, very friendly, allow you to substitute any soup with the sushi lunch special for no extra charge. Staff really go above and beyond. Can be a little slow at times so if you're on a lunch break, sitting at the bar would be your better bet. Spicy tuna roll is VERY GOOD. This is where I go for sushi. It's most definitely the best in Manchester. Whenever I go I can't help but order an unreasonable amount of items from their "maki special" menu. The Blizzard roll is my go-to favorite (a spicy tuna roll wrapped in white tuna, topped with some spicy sauces). After I had ordered that a million times, I decided to try different ones each time I go. They are all beautiful, delicious, fresh, and creative. If I have a bad week I go to Chen's, order a butt ton of sushi and move on with my life, feeling happy and wonderful. The special rolls are a bit pricey but worth every penny. Anytime I go somewhere else I compare it to this place. They are the gold standard! The crab rangoons are awesome and fresh and much better than your average "fried paper and cream cheese" style goons you run into at other places. I've tried a few other noodle / chicken dishes here (which are all great too, if that's what you're looking for) but I really just go for the sushi. I fantasize about it. He is the sweetest, happiest person on the face of the planet and makes us feel so welcomed and appreciated; what a classic gentleman. Wanting chinese food tonight but didn't want to try the places we have been to previously, so mom and I decided to check out Chen's Garden. The dining room is beautiful and with all the windows I can see the natural light would be great in the daytime, but there was enough lighting in the evening as well. We ordered the beef with pea pods, chicken lo mein and peking dumplings. Everything was fabulous. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The dumplings were fabulous and the sauce that came with it, which typically is just a ginger type soy, was beyond fresh and delicious. The beef with pea pods had a nice light sauce, nothing worse than getting chinese food that is all sauce. This was well seasoned, the beef was cut nice and thin. delicious. The lo mein was by far hands down the best tasting lo mein I've had ever. It was nice and light, not overly sauced and not greasy. There was no MSG and you could tell, there was that salt lick flavor on your tongue at the end of it. The pricing was typical of most chinese restaurants so not overly expensive. They had an extensive sushi menu that I think I would definitely come back with friends that like sushi to try. All and all I was very impressed with this establishment. read more
