Tried Chesapeake again for the lunch buffet. Same stodgy feeling, same clientele, same food. I have to say, this buffet is one of the most underwhelming food experiences I have had in Springfield. It reminded me of hospital food or a grade-school cafeteria. Everything was drowning in some sort of sauce and looked overcooked and like it had been sitting in those metal pans for centuries. It appeared that the peel-and-eat shrimp were supposed to be the real draw of the buffet, but they were sort of rubbery due to thawing and nothing terribly exciting. There were a few 'mystery meat' items like meatloaf (covered in tomato sauce), some sort of fish (covered in butter sauce), some sort of pulled pork? BBQ (covered in BBQ sauce). Green beans sitting a in tub of salted water. Corn sitting in a tub of buttery water. I think Ive made my point. I have to say that the older clientele surrounding me seemed to love it. They couldnt get enough. So, I guess they have their market sort of cornered, but with the plethora of good ethnic lunch buffets in Springfield (El Maya, Holy Land, Gateway to India) this place would really have to step it up to seriously compete. read more

My wife and I traveled to Illinois to visit our family in the beautiful Golden Triangle area of western Illinois. We also wanted to experience the historical Abraham Lincoln areas of Springfield. Which naturally we enjoyed and found educational. While there we had to explore local dining. The parking lot was packed on a Sunday evening and we decided to dine there on Monday. My wife ordered the filet and lobster tail and said it was fabulous. I ordered a lobster tail with additional shrimp and a tasty crab cake. It too was superb! I've been to the resturant one other time. I ended up leaving after waiting over 30 minutes to be seated..even with a reservation. I decided to go and try it out again during lunch. The building itself is very outdated but not a problem for me. I went with my SO around 12 PM on a Friday afternoon and we were seated immediately. We ordered two drinks (bloody mary and Moscow mule) and a dozen raw oysters. Looking back I'm not sure why we would trust raw seafood from this place. The wait for the oysters was about 15 minutes, which was a bad sign. It shouldn't take any trained chef 15 minutes to shuck a dozen oysters. Eventually our wonderful waitress Dee brough them out and the smell of the ocean smacked me right in the face. First oyster I swallowed almost came back up. Paid for our order and left. Be prepared to wait. The restaurant wasn't all that busy but we waited a very long time for the waiter to approach our table, take our order and serve our courses. Otherwise this is a nice place to go. It has a beautiful interior with a nautical theme, white starched tablecloths and cloth napkins. The food was delicious and the price was right. read more

I've dined here two times and each time has been just ok. Friends wanted to go for the buffet so I went along to have lunch with the group. Better has been the group events I've attended. The food and service seems to be a little better. I would normally choose some other location for group events, but when a fish theme is needed, it's not a bad place to go. read more

This place was very tasty. The service was great, our waitress was very friendly, and the ambience was unique and welcoming. We ordered the platters and the plates were full unlike Red Lobster. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years, most times were good and occasionally not so good. Saturday evening we had a 6:30 reservation for 20. We were given only one rude waitress who shushed us! It was a hit or miss to even get our drinks refilled and we weren't sure of what response we would get if we asked. The food was mediocre for the price. I don't think they are equipped to handle large groups at all. It was very embarrassing for me as a local to have my out-of-town and out-of-state friends to have such a negative experience. It's doubtful I will return. read more

In town on business. I love lobster but never get it because it is so expensive. I was shocked to see this nice atmosphere place with a steak and lobster for $24.99 I took the chance. Not the best dining experience last night. I'm disappointed; usually this place is wonderful. Service was very slow, with many missed opportunities for drink sales, and apparently our waiter can't distinguish between escargot and oysters; also, when my husband asked for a glass of wine with dinner, he was served a beer instead. Also, he needs to speak more distinctly; we were seated between two larger parties and the noise level was a bit high, so I couldn't hear him speaking. Period. Well I wanted seafood and this place looked good so we called. We immediately called to try and to get a reservation at 7pm on Friday night. He said "no problem come on Down"! Honestly, that made me a little nervous but I thought maybe we're just lucky. So we got there and it was not busy but there were a few people there. I really liked the ambiance in the restaurant with mounted fish all over and wooden ship wheels (pretty cool) We ordered 2 appetizers the Lobster Rangoon and the crab stuffed shrimp. The Rangoon was meh not much taste and the crab stuffed shrimp was very salty but pretty good. We then ordered land and sea. I got the 5 oz lobster tail with a 12 oz ribeye ( which was a $8.00 up charge over the 7oz sirloin) my wife got the ribeye (upcharge) with the shrimp scampi. We were both very disappointed with our meals. The steak was tough and not much taste. The lobster was chewy and the shrimp scampi also had no flavor. We both ordered potatoes au gratin as our side they were little chunks potatoes in an orange colored watered down sauce. We both got a side salad which consisted of Just iceberg lettuce and cheese no tomatoes or croutons or egg or cucumber just plain salad. The ranch dressing was good. We also ordered a bottle of Moscato. They brought us out a small hot loaf of bread this was pretty good but the honey butter was mild not as sweet as we hoped for. Our waiter Andrew was great but it just seems this restaurant has forgotten about the details of the food. Our bill came out to $105 for the 2 of us. So about what we expected (actually my wife guessed it exactly) I don't miss no paying if the food is worth the money. Hopefully they read this review and try to improve on their food. read more

Come in for the lunch buffet! Meatloaf, tilapia, fried chicken, even the gravy. Get in here fast the food is fantastic.

Love the food and ambience but honestly just wanted to post because Scott our waiter was AMAZING!!!!! So efficient and sweet! I recently did a software upgrade and was in the Springfield area for several months. That means I get to sample the local fare...... Chesapeake was recommended by one of the folks at work, so we did lunch here first. It was very good, skipped the buffet which looked very good if you like that sort of thing. I prefer to have something a little more 'fresh' and did the Plank Salmon on the first trip. It was excellent, as was the service..... So we did many lunches here, took my wife here for a Saturday night supper when she visited town and she likes her Talapia. I went the scrimp pasta which was good. This place was so good, the work team did lunch here on a regular basis. Supper on occasion, though after a great lunch, we usually tried to cut down the calories in the evening.... But Chesapeake is good enough, that it was on the list for my final week of Springfield favorite restaurants. That is when I really saw their service. I left my credit card somehow on the table. Didn't realize it till on the way back to Texas, a little mental backtracking lead me to call them. They had the card, over nighted the lost item to me (leaving immediately on vacation and needed it very badly!). The food is great, the service is great. My mom is getting married in a couple of weeks and we went to Chesapeake last night for the first leg of our (tame) bachelorette party journey. We made reservations and didn't have to wait too long when the eight of us arrived to be seated. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had set up a private dining room for us. Our waiter I believe was named Ken, and he was very polite and very attentive to making sure that our table was cleared and our drinks were filled. As for the food, I ordered the Twin Fried Lobster Tails, which were very tasty, and the au gratin potatoes, which were just okay. My mom ordered the Alaskan Crab legs and she shared a few with me. We thought they were wonderful. Also, my mom has Celiac Disease, so she can't have gluten (wheat or most grain products). The staff seemed to be well informed on how to prepare food for people with this allergy, so I would definitely recommend this as a place to eat for gluten-free people. My sister in law ordered the Chicken Salad, which was HUGE. She enjoyed it but could hardly even put a dent in the food. I'm not positive what everyone else in our group had, but everyone enjoyed their food. The bread served with our food was excellent, and with it was a delicious honey butter. Overall, a pretty great experience there. I've heard from several people that the buffet that is served on holidays (Easter, Mother's Day) isn't very good, so I would recommend going only on days that you can order from the menu. read more

Went here for the first time for my birthday with my mom, sister, and niece. I had the seafood ravioli and it was phenomenal. Super rich, moist seafood inside, good ratio of crab, scallop, and lobster, and the service was astounding. My mom and sister had the fried chicken that they loved. I attended a surprise birthday party. The restaurant itself appears to be a tad bit dated. The service was awesome! Our waitress was Patty! I ordered the stuffed shrimp and was disappointed when it came out due to it being such a small serving. It was described as being in garlic butter and boy was it! The garlic butter overwhelmed the entire plate. The salad only consisted of lettuce and cheese. The bread and butter was great. Would I choose this as a place to eat again? Very cool setting to enjoy a meal. This is one of my in-laws favorite places to eat when we visit. I was very surprised at the oysters I got. As crazy as it sounds they were better than the ones I had a Gibsons Steakhouse earlier in the month. That's crazy. The food overall is solid but heavy on the fried side. If you like geriatric-type restaurants, this is the place for you. The outside of the restaurant is deceiving... the exterior looks like a beautiful old mansion. The actual dining area is small, dark, and they squish you in like sardines. This is not the place to go on a date, unless you're going with Brad Pitt (or Angelina for the men) and want everyone to see you and hear everything you say. As far as I can tell there are only three "good" tables that are by the window... which I'm sure you have to call and reserve in advance. The service was okay, but we could hardly hear our waitress. Maybe I've been spoiled after living in New Orleans and eating seafood there, but this is the most crap seafood I've ever had. One of their "specialties" is fried catish, displaying it prominently on the menu. Haha. It was void of any seasoning or taste. We had my rehearsal dinner here. I couldn't have asked for a better dinner. All of my family and friends were raving about how great the food was. The staff was incredible and made sure we were all comfortable. Our main waiter was Anthony and he was superb. I would highly suggest to anyone to use this location for your rehearsal dinner or any dinner for that matter. The bread and salmon were as good as it can get.
