We had a great Sunday dinner here. I had oysters and shrimp my wife had salmon. Both were excellent. Wine list was very good and not overpriced. The various rooms are comfortable and not stiff. Its just a very good solid dinner house that specializes in seafood. read more

Seems to be inconsistency in the food quality and quantity. I have been here twice, and the first time it was o.k. This time, I ordered the bourbon salmon, which I was told came on a bed of rice. When it came, I noticed that they skimped quite a bit on the rice... There was was looked like half of a child's ice cream scoop of rice hidden under the salmon. My boyfriend ordered the broiled salmon, which was not fully cooked on the inside, and made his stomach uneasy within an hour. Not impressed whatsoever- the quality does not match the price. Went there today had the worst food ever and services. I wish I could put the picture of my food on here to show you. My fries came out over 10 Mins after I got my food. I don't know how you can mess up fried shrimp but the did. The crab legs where good and the lobster tail was 5 out of 10. Know I remember why I stop going. The food was amazing. I was so full that I could barely walk out. I had the lobster and shrimp. The waiter named Scott took perfect care of me bringing me honey butter that was so delicious along with the bread. The shrimp and lobster special was $5 cheaper than normal so I felt like royalty. :) read more

Dinner for 2 on a Saturday night Ordered the lobster & shrimp ravioli ($15.99) and shrimp de jonghe ($13.99) + Flavorful and delicious food (albeit drowning in sauces). I just scraped off the extra sauce off the dishes. + Friendly service + Food arrived at a reasonable time and at required food temperature - Small portions - Smells like "grandma's house" - Decor is outdated (Reminded us of Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin, IL) Not bad for Springfield, IL. Observation (neither good nor bad, just an observation): Most of the clientel are senior citizens. read more

Came here with a group of 40 and the food and service were stellar! The food was steaming hot and fast for ALL of us. I had fabulous salmon with baked potato and hush puppy, hot bread, peach green tea, iced, and a giant piece of cheesecake for dessert. Others had beef and chicken - everyone was delighted. Ate here on Christmas Eve. Food was wonderful as usual. 2 people had ribs, 1 salmon, and 1 shrimp and scallops. They Were extremely busy, but didn't feel rushed and service was great. Was a special evening for my husband, and me with our son and grandson. read more

For a seafood restaurant that is situated in a city bordered on all sides by corn and soybeans, the Chesapeake does a good job. Prices are reasonable for this area, although you'll get a better deal dining early on off-peak days. Portion sizes are adequate, but not huge. If you're exceptionally hungry, order an appetizer. The food may well be whatever comes on page 47, column 12 of the Sysco catalogue, but if that concerns you, see my first sentence. For all of the food critic wannabes who continually whine about how downstate Illinois hicks just don't know good food and are happy with places like this, I would ask that you shut your frozen cod. This isn't *insert big city here* where everything is perfect and nothing ever goes wrong. This is seafood in central Illinois. Be happy it isn't being served on a plate shaped like Abraham Lincoln's butt and adjust your expectations accordingly. read more

Service was a little slow to start, the food was adequate the french onion was salty, the shrimp coctail was not from fresh shrimp they had oviously been boiled ahead and v either frozen or refrigerated. Lobster tail really good but ny strip ok. They were out of oyster and the stuffed shrimp we mehh. My potato had black spots but was mostly edible augratin potato was a swing and a miss kind of like o'brian potato with cheese soup. read more

Old school feel and tasty food. I went for dinner with my mom and kids and the early bird menu was a really good value (my shrimp dejonghe was $10 including salad, side and hush puppy). Our waiter was great and asked if we wanted him to bring out the kids' meals with our salads, which is always appreciated. Not everything was delicious (au gratin potatoes, green bean side) but our seafood entrees were, which was good enough for us. read more

This is the perfect place to hold a special event! We hosted an 85th Birthday Patty for our Mom last week and everything exceeded our expectations! Pre-planning/ menu selection was professionally managed by Dan; our guests from California. Texas, Indiana, Missouri and Illinois enjoyed delicious food including large portions of cedar plank salmon and steak/shrimp combos; and excellent service was provided by Anthony (Tony) Tapley and his team! While visiting Springfield, we had supper at Chesapeake Seafood House. We got right in at 5:30 on a Saturday night, but by 6 there was a long wait. The bread and butter was delicious. Our salads, the house dressing and sides were great, too. My husband said his shrimp was good. My son and I ordered fried fish and we would not recommend. He had pollock and I had cod. The cod was mushy and not that hot. For being a seafood house, we were surprised. read more

Very nice restaurant. Not a huge eating area, but mirrors make it appear larger - I did not feel crowded. Based upon my one visit there, I would say, overall, good service, and very good food (with a wide variety of menu choices). The prices are roughly comparable to Red Lobster, perhaps a bit higher. It has much of the character of an older, traditional restaurant - a good thing, in my view. I had fried shrimp (good), fried scallops (very good), and clam chowder (simply outstanding). My wife and children had other seafood-related items, and were all more than satisfied with them. Side dishes were fine, although perhaps not memorable (except for the mini-loaf of bread, which was very good). I will definitely return! read more

My husband and I call this our psychotic dining experience! Things were either very good or very bad! We went for dinner on a Tuesday night. The prices were in line with a very nice Midwestern restaurant. Our appetizers were great! (Two of their house specialties.) Regarding my salmon entree - the salmon was fantastic but the rice pilaf was awful (more like stove top stuffing mix combined with rice)! My husband's Alaskan King crab labs were so small they had to have been the stone crab that they also had on their menu. He said it either was very old or way overcooked. It came out of the shell only in small stringy pieces. But his augratin potatoes were some of the best we had ever had! So we weren't quite sure what to make of this place?? read more

I can understand the geriatric comment as many of the people in the restaurant were older,.. but that shouldn't stop you from going. It is small and dark, but I agree it made it feel intimate. I ordered the lobster ravioli and liked it. The bread with honey butter that they serve beforehand is very yummy. The service I got was excellent. I don't know if it's a temporary thing or a usual thing, but if you go there for dinner before 6pm they have better deals for the meals. I paid $9.99 for my lobster ravioli. Our hotel concierge recommended Chesapeake and we were encouraged by the reviews here on Yelp. We arrived shortly after 6pm on a Thursday evening. The lot was full but there was only one other party of 2 waiting for a table. The host took our name and told us it would be 10 minutes. Sitting in the lobby, we managed to enjoy a lively conversation to pass time and did our best to ignore the strong institutional cleaner smell that permeated the area. As the lobby filled with potential diners, we finally glanced at the clock and realized we had been waiting over 25 minutes. My husband approached the host who said our name was not on the list (my husband WATCHED the man write his name down and even spelled it for him - he had to erase & start over as he had spelled it wrong), and he also said he didn't remember talking to him earlier. He then said "we'll get to you". My nose had had enough of the icky smell in the lobby so we left. Yelp doesn't allow no stars, so the one star will have to do. Ambiance? Nope. Interesting nautical artifacts? Yes! Food? Who knows? We never got to see the dining room... read more

Have been coming to this place for over 40 years since it was the Southern Air. My Grandmother loved it and we visited often since she worked at the Capital. I agree that they have a lot of fried food but thats what a lot of people want. Its probably about nostalgia for me but Im always happy to eat here. Skip the lunch buffet - Im not sure why they still offer that...its not seafood oriented anyway. Im also not sure why people go here and order steak...its not a steak house. But they do a few things really well such as the Oysters Rockefeller...very good. The Australian lobster tail is huge and a good price for such a large tail. You cant buy the tail alone for that price at Roberts and here it comes with all the fixings. The raw oysters have always been fresh...especially in the months that have an R in them...with good reason. On the lighter side the stuffed shrimp are a good value. Skip the crab cakes...we are not in Maryland with fresh crab meat. The shrimp cocktail is just fine - as long as you accept that all shrimp here has been frozen at some point...this aint Florida. I love bringing my parents here...sitting by the windows watching the squirrels playing outside on the ancient oak trees. Have had a run-in with the hostess a few times over the years...just hold your ground and attract attention by refusing to give in and you usually win out. Lots of attitude around the podium. All in all its about the best seafood place around and beats Red Lobster (yuk) hands down. I do wish they offered more ocean going fish but few people would probably spring for seabass or halibut at $30 a plate. I would if it was fresh. So a blast from the past...enjoy. read more

If you like fried seafood this place is for you, however I don't. Everything is fried, fried, fried, and fried again. This place was rated best seafood by a local paper, but I wonder if the folks of Springfield have ever eaten fresh seafood. I don't think so. The menu does not even tell you how dishes are prepared. We ordered a combination of seafood for $22.99 and everything on the plate was FRIED. Stay away if you are looking for fresh tasty seafood, you will not find it here. SO SAD. read more

My husband and I were somewhat underwhelmed with this restaurant. We both really love fish and seafood and this place just wasn't all that great. The service was good and the temperature was nice and warm (I hate being cold in restaurants), but the food was average. I had the salmon and it was bland, without much taste. I also had crab stuffed shrimp which were "ok." Prices were equivalent to a chain restaurant and I'd probably go to Red Lobster or Olive Garden before going back to Chesapeake. read more

My husband and I recently made a trip to see the middle son in Kalamazoo. We found the Chesapeake Seafood House on the way up, (it was suggested by the hotel staff at the Hilton Garden Inn). We were supposed to take an alternate route home but chose not to so we could get seafood at Chesapeake Seafood House. AM I EVER GLAD we did!! One other reviewer talked about service being slow, I did NOT find that to be the case. The server noticed that we were holding hands and talking softly, so I feel she allowed us to have a very romantic dinner! we shared an appetizer of shrimp. Then I had the shrimp three ways..... Husband had the bourbon glazed salmon. The husband's bourbon glazed salmon was flakey and as thick as a steak. My shrimp was so abundant I couldn't finish it. (One time in all my travels, I was sad I didn't have a fridge at the hotel.) It was the freshest Seafood I have had since going to Seattle or New York. We will definitely be going back to visit our son, one way or the other we will be going through Springfield to stop at Chesapeake Seafood House! read more
