We needed to grab dinner and the concierge recommended this place. The location was nice with a decent amount of seating. True to Asheville now, you should get a reservation if you want to eat anywhere these days. Its drink menu was cryptic, but our waiter was ready to explain each item. She was definitely the best part, along with the other diners. You could tell this place was somewhat of a local favorite as residents were running into each other at different tables. I ordered today's special, which was a ravioli stuffed with some type of meat I can't remember. While the flavors were great, I wish it was a bigger portion. overall a good experience dining at chestnut! We stopped by on a Saturday around 1pm and had no issues getting seated right away. Our waitress was attentive and was able to answer our questions about the menu. The real stand out from our meal was the pimento cheese tater tots with jalapeño aioli. SO GOOD. I could have had another order. The Bloody Mary deviled eggs were good and we liked the unique take. The entree we shared was slightly disappointing-- the flavors were great but there was only 2 pieces of meat. So it was mostly breakfast potatoes, veggies, and sauce. The salad was okay, not as good as any I make at home. The fried green tomatoes were the highlight! It tasted like grilled cheese. The filet was ordered medium but came definitely medium rare. A place this pricy should cook steak the way it is ordered! Besides that, the dish was great but small for the price too. I came here for a solo dinner while visiting Asheville for the weekend. I sat at the bar - it was pretty crowded and busy, I was there around 8pm on Friday- so I didn't have to wait and the bartender brought the menus over quickly and was nice and friendly. I ordered the bronson, a spicy tequila drink and a creamy pasta. The drink was delicious but the food just just okay, a little lacking in flavor/seasoning. There were a lot of other tempting options on the menu though, and I had a pleasant experience overall so I would definitely go back to try something else. read more

The curry mussels were unique and delicious, the beet salad was fresh and beautiful, the dumplings were like eating an Asian pot roast inside a delicate dumpling skin. Had to come based on all the reviews! "It can't be this good as they say" but I was wrong! It was actually better. After being greeted by our hostess, she began to inquire as to whether we were local our visiting (getting to know your customers). She was fantastic in explaining the restaurant, food, concept without being too overwhelming. She was from Colorado with an awesome and warming vibe. After being given ample time to devour the menu, we decided to go with the recommendation given to us. Awaiting my meal, I took the opportunity to glance around the place a bit. Beautiful place and architecture. I had to check the bar and its selections. Bourbon and rye give it a thumbs up as well as the scotch whiskey. However, the tequila disappointed me (I'm a tequila sipper fan). They had very poor selections. I would highly recommend getting G4, Cazcanes, 3 agaves, el Tesoro-2-3 blancos, 2 repos and añejo and extra añejo from el tesoro. My humble recommendation. We proceeded to place our orders The seasonal soup made from butter squash which was amazing! Full of flavors. I was reluctant at first to get this but I am thankful for once I went with the recommendation made from our server. The SHRIMP AND GRITS were of the jumbo sea variety, tender, juicy and grilled to perfection. The grit puree was tart and spicy with a mild spicy punch that really woke up the taste buds. The grit was complex with a multitude of flavors all combining to form the perfect accompaniment to the shrimp. This was a perfect start to my experience at this restaurant. Moving on to my wife's chicken and waffle, had to grab a bite since she discovered how tasty and good it was, in fact, was reluctant to share with me. But I did catch a bite or two and the checken was amazing. Quality meat and the batter was full of flavor. This brings us to the final plate which was dessert. We had the pumpkin pie and donuts which a perfect balance between sweetness and true flavors. Not too sweet which would detract from enjoying all the flavors but with the coffee it actually enhanced the pumpkin. I have traveled to many states and places around the world and I have to say this place is in my top 10 breakfast places among other places like Italy, France, and Ecuador. My wife got the Wellington and I got the seafood. My wife's Wellington was very good. Possibly not the best we've had but very close. My seafood was very different. The sauce, whatever it was, was perfect for most of the dish. Full of flavor and perfectly complimentary to the fresh catch and shrimp. However, I didn't think it went great with the mussels. I don't know why it was different, but it was. Not bad, but it did not compliment the mussels. That said, it was still an amazing dish and what that sauce did to the rest of the seafood was to die for. I also had their Covered in Wood bourbon cocktail and the Two Birds whiskey cocktail. Both were good but the covered in wood was excellent. Very woody-no surprise-almost smokey. Loved it.
