One of the few Chinese places that are open beyond 9p in San Mateo. I am bucking the trend here and not getting the meat over rice, but rather got the mapo tofu and fish over vegetables. The fish was delicious, soft and tender. Classic Chinese style ginger fish over a bunch of crunchy (and not cut or torn apart, which actually made it difficult to eat) bok choi. I love being able to phone in and send my husband to pick up. A 3-minute drive. The order is always right, the prices are reasonable, and the food is good quality and well-prepared. (I'm pretty picky, too.) We don't have time to eat-in often but when we do it's fine. I have to say, though: many diners seem to think it's perfectly okay for their children to be playing loud video games on their devices. I usually frequent Cheung Hing's location in the City, but opted to try the closer, Bel-Mateo restaurant. We arrived on a Saturday around 7:15pm; the place was packed with a crowd in the small waiting area, and no tables available. We hung around outside for about 10 minutes and our party of 5 was seated at one of their large banquet tables, but who cares? We were just happy to get in and out of the cold! The patrons were mostly Chinese, typically meaning the food is pretty decent and usually a good sign! There are 2 TVs on either side of the restaurant showing local sports and what seemed like a documentary of a young girl living in a small China village. We watched her gather, clean and cook Chinese food, the old school way. It was extremely interesting and helped us kill time while waiting to order, waiting for our food, waiting for our bill.. get my drift? There were about five waitresses rushing around, taking orders, serving food, trying to give tables the bill with the patrons arguing over who's credit card to use making them wait (so typical). My dad attempted to flag ANYONE down to order and calling for them in Chinese did not even help. We tried to order about five dishes that were "Sold Out" so were forced to move on through the menu. Once ordered, we waited for what seemed like eternity. On the plus side, our food came out hot so it was assumed fresh not just sitting around waiting to be served. The waitress forgot one of our dishes, which was brought to her attention, then after another 20 minutes was brought to her attention, AGAIN! She admitted to my dad in Chinese that she forgot and apologized. At least she was honest.. Although service was horrible and things that I had been craving already ran out, I was still eating (for the most part) good Chinese food! -Ginseng House Soup: expensive (the most out of all our dishes) but healthy with a lot of chicken and peanuts. -Salted Fish, Chicken Fried Rice: super salty (and stinky), only tasted good mixed with plain white rice to dilute the salt. -Garlic Pea Sprouts: always a favorite, cooked just right! -Combo Plate with Roast Duck and Soy Sauce Chicken: bummed they were sold out of the Roast Pork but honestly just came here for the delicious roast duck! Love everything about it, even the sauce and cabbage! Eat it over white rice! -Ranch Raised Boiled Chicken: (un)naturally yellow in color, served with delicious ginger, green onion, and oil blend dipping sauce. Sauce was a lot less green in color than usual but just as tasty! -Spicy Salt and Pepper Squid: definitely love this dish but not from here. Flavor was ok, it would have tasted better with more fried garlic and lighter breading. The only good thing was they served equal parts of the squid body and tentacles. I personally wouldn't order again. -Fish and Tofu Clay Pot: another one of my favorites, fish was battered well and the sauce tied the tofu in perfectly. With the amount of food we ordered (to serve five people), we even had some leftovers. We spent just over $100 without tax and tip, which was a reasonable cost for the food itself. We ordered salt & pepper chicken wings, Peking spareribs, black mushroom & chicken rice in clay pot, and scrambled egg w/ prawns over rice. We were impressed by how good the food tasted! They do Togo orders and have hand sanitizer inside. We ordered on the phone and picked up and paid at the restaurant. The food was very hot and fresh. My favorite had to be the salt & pepper chicken wings and the scrambled egg w/ prawns. The meat was very juicy on the chicken wings and the rice dish was delicious! Also, because we ordered over $35 worth of food, we got free fried rice as well! My family loved the food we ordered and are talking about going back again soon! So surprised at the low reviews. We found this place on accident. What a pleasant surprise! Growing up in S.F. I'm super picky when it comes to Chinese food. This place serves Cantonese Hong Kong style food. The selection of foods we ordered were fresh, full of flavor & delicious. Our order consisted of salt & pepper prawns, Mu shu pork, pan fried green beans with prawns, chow mein, cashew chicken & BBQ pork with a side of Bow. I was pleasantly surprised, It was all fantastic. 2 stars because the food I had was decent. We ordered rice, chicken chow mein, and orange chicken. We also ordered the wonton noodle soup and let me tell you when we tried the soup, it was horrible. Bland no flavor, and the noodles seemed they were just taken out of a box, hard. We left it, untouched basically. Service was horrible, the waitresses don't care for their customers at all. I had to go up to them to ask for a box, the check and I complained about the soup. I told her the soup tastes like water and if she can please comp it. She came over very rude, said what's wrong with it? That she's not the owner and can't remove it. That she would have to pay for it out of her own pocket. I told her it was not good Ake not even my kids ate it. She was very upset and rolled her eyes at me. I told her I was not going to pay for it and continued to tell me that I had to pay for it. I ordered the salt and pepper chicken wings, chicken chow mein and a steamed minced pork patty with salted fish (its a regional dish) everything was quite bland and for some reason they served the pork patty as a lunch plate with rice and the rice was from the bottom of the cooker, kinda brown and crispy, which if it was a clay pot dish, would have been fine. Very little salted fish which is the accent flavor to this dish, if your Cantonese you know what I mean, the wings were a little oily as were the green onion and jalapeños so maybe the oil wasn't hot enough, the chow mein didn't wow either. She was probably having a bad day, but that doesn't mean you take it out on customers. As far as food goes, our pickup order was correct and the food was good except for the sweet & sour chicken. It tasted like old chicken. The Mongolian beef & fried rice were good. I strongly believe in supporting local restaurants that offer friendly/welcoming service, in addition to providing great food and because of the bad service I received I will not be coming back. If you want some authentic Chinese food in or around San Mateo, you can't miss with Cheung Hing. We love their Rice in Clay Pot dishes. The rice is so crunchy and the sauce is so good. Some of the other dishes you see at other Chinese restaurants are good too like their Buddha's Delight or their Pork Chop with Spicy Salt. Here's what I'd order again: - #105 Clay pot rice with bacon and sausage. Excellent! Star of the show. - #18 XLB. Not DTF good but decent, especially for a Cantonese restaurant - #31 Sheng Jian Bao. Good but not great. Still, I'd order it again. Bao was a on the thicker side but not as thick as others I've had at Shanghainese restaurants. Just not Yang's thin. Right amount of soup too which is hard to get right. Crispy bottom as well. - Roast pork/cha siu combo. Cancelled this as we were too full! But saw others order it and it looked legit. What I wouldn't order again: - #20 Veggie dumplings. Not a big fan of mushrooms. You might like it though. - Deep fried cross cut pork chops.
