Celebrating a milestone birthday called for a fancier lunch spot than our usual haunts. But was this place going to be all flash and no substance? Nope. Food and service, and even the coffee were all exceptional. And with free valet parking, and letting us bring our own cake with no charge for providing plates and utensils, we were more than pleased. Our server (Dan?) had personality plus, and was utterly professional as well. My only quibble? We hit the bar after lunch, and the seats at the bar have no foot rests! Since the bar revolves, there can't be a foot rail, so you're left to just perch and dangle. Weird. And the barmaids weren't exactly warm and welcoming. Decor is extravagant without being gaudy. I don't get the point of surrounding the place with those tall windows, since the view is nothing special. But who am I to say. Maybe some people really enjoy watching downtown traffic. And on the occasion of our visit, a line of utility repair trucks. Our group's orders included Mushroom Pizza, Carnitas Tacos, the Italian Hoagie, Burgers and the Caprese Panini, some with the usual chicken, and mine substituting a portobello mushroom for the chicken. Yum, yum and yum. Everything was excellent, even the house-made seasoned chips. I thought the prices were more than fair for the quality of the food, service and ambiance. My mom booked this for a family brunch, as they had availability for a large party. She actually booked by mistake instead of another breakfast place we had previously been to, but figured we would give it a try. The menu doesn't have any gluten free options, but we were told they could make an omelette (which was not listed on the menu). Service was extremely slow. Getting coffee / a pitcher of mimosas for the table took over 15 minutes. 45 minutes after ordering our food, it had still not arrived at the table and the restaurant was definitely not busy. My sister-in-law ordered an egg white veggie omelette with no cheese (dairy allergy) and a side of berries. The berries were moldy and the omelette arrived with cheese and had to be sent back. My grandmother ordered an egg omelette which was completely forgotten. My omelette was fine, but lukewarm. Everyone else in our party said their food was "just okay" / "not great". The manager did comp drinks, the forgotten order, and the one order that came out wrong - which was nice. We felt bad for the server because the kitchen was responsible for the errors, yet she had to deal with the complaints. We won't be back. read more

Bloody Mary's were ordered-they had great flavor but had little hints of any alcohol. Corned beef hash was over seasoned, had some gristle and was topped with a single paltry fried egg. My wife's egg's Benedict came out cold and flavorless. The brunch required a $15 per person reservation fee. As I was leaving, I inquired about the credit for this fee, and they said it was credited to the final bill. It wasn't. It took another 10 minutes to get the bill properly credited. I came here for Sunday brunch and was pretty disappointed in the food and the service. Food - I had the veggie omelette for brunch. It was $12 and pretty small and very overcooked. The potatoes that came with it were very good though. Usually an omelette comes with home fries and toast but this was just a small omelette and fried potatoes. Not a deal breaker though. The omelette on the other hand was very burnt and just fell apart when you tried to eat it. Service - Not terrible but just very slow. Especially for the checks. We were the only table occupied in the restaurant. Also important to note that the bathrooms were DISGUSTING. They looked and smelled like they were never cleaned from the Saturday night before. Came into Chez Ami this past Friday evening to have dinner with friends to celebrate my birthday. I knew they did a birthday promotion, so that gave me the perfect excuse to go check it out for the first time. I made a reservation for 9 of us and our table was set and ready when we arrived. Our server Drew was awesome and had a great sense of humor. To start, we ordered calamari, mussels and a large charcuterie board for the table to share. The calamari was cooked perfectly, a little crispy on the outside but not over cooked. The mussels tasted fresh and flavorful and the charcuterie board was the perfect size for our group. Drinks we ordered took a bit of time to make it to the table, but there was 9 of us ordering and the rest of the restaurant was busy so it was understandable. After apps, a few of us ordered some soup before our entrees. I ordered the French onion and a few others ordered broccoli cheddar and potato bacon. The broccoli cheddar was probably the best I've ever had. Thankfully my little brother ordered it so I didn't feel bad about snagging a few bites. I personally was very unimpressed with the French onion. Even using a knife, I couldn't cut through the bread that they used, making it difficult to eat. I'm pretty sure they cleared it with more than half of the soup left. One of my least favorites I've ever had. For dinner I ordered their monk fish that they had on special. It came over a sweet potato purée and was topped with spicy corn and asparagus. This was my first time trying monk fish and I absolutely loved it! Our waiter described it perfectly as having the texture of lobster but having a lighter taste. There were two of us doing the birthday promotion. They will credit you up to $35 each person but they take off the least expensive entree. For us both, they took off $36. For the amount that we all spent, I thought they would've given us the full $35 per person but I didn't want to make a fuss about it. The restruant itself is quite small, however it has a very intimate feel to it with the decor and lighting. My boyfriend and I shared a bottle of wine and started our meal with a steak pizza as an appetizer. Very delicious! Next, we ate a short rib eye roast over garlic mashed potatoes and steamed carrots. The meat just melted in your mouth; everything was cooked perfectly. I had NY style cheese cake with a strawberry on top and I can't lie , that was probably one of the BEST cheesecakes I've ever had. Love this venue! I decided to pick this restaurant to take my mom out for her 60th birthday lunch. Since it is more expensive and a little more fancy than what I normally do I felt it would be a great place to celebrate. We both ordered drinks-she ordered a Cherry Blossom drink (forget the actual name-oops!) which was served in a martini glass and I ordered the French 75. I'm a sucker for the French 75-it's a classic that you can never go wrong with ordering. My mom's drink was also good-it was gin based with lemon and lime juice. Very good. She ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with hand cut fries which she liked very much. I couldn't decide what to go. I was torn between the Couscous Salad and Margarita pizza. I had been wanting to try the pizza since I added Chez Ami to my restaurant list as the pictures I had seen looked amazing but the salad caught my eye while browsing the menu. I decided to live my best life and get both. So glad I did! I finished the salad and had a slice of pizza. The sauce was awesome! And now I have leftovers. We couldn't leave without having dessert as it was a birthday celebration! We ordered the flourless chocolate cake with salted caramel ice cream. It was very rich but perfect to split! I was staying at the Curtiss Hotel for an event and the hotel offered a "box" lunch from Chez Ami. I ordered the Caesar Salad and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was! It was perfectly dressed and had a great ratio of protein, croutons, and lettuce. I do feel like the lettuce wasn't cleaned to the best of their abilities as the leaves near the base were served clumped together. However, I thoroughly enjoyed meal. It was also fairly priced. It then began to snow and I'm from Miami so going outside was a no no for me therefore I was stuck having Chez Ami for dinner. I looked over the menu and nothing grabbed my attention. It was getting late so I called the restaurant to ensure I would have time to order and I did. I ran downstairs and sat at the bar (passing the bartender). The bar tender was having a conversation with patrons. This is good and normal. I tried to get her attention so I could order and was unsuccessful. She sad me a moment later and I told her I works ne ordering food (knowing I had limited time to order). I asked for recs and ordered what she mentioned. I then (before last call) asked to sun one of the dishes and was told I could but she would have to do XYZ...this was a bit annoying because I felt like I was burdening her. She picked up on this and said she could cancel the dish if I didn't like it. Not the point but ok, I didn't swap. I ended up not loving it (and let her know that). I ordered the maple old fashion, it was insanely sweet, I don't rec it. Over all the bar is cute but the food is over priced and nothing to write home about. We had an amazing graduation dinner in the private room. I was greeted by Adam the GM when we arrived(early) and he immediately put me at ease. He set up the room with the flowers and items i brought and the room looked beautiful when it was time to enter. David was a server for the night and he was so attentive and went above and beyond the entire night. Our guests and the graduate had a first class night and the food/drinks and desserts were amazing. The wine list for wine by the glass was just ok. I settled on the Zinfandel. The birthday gal got a specialty cocktail where they lite fresh rosemary on fire before pouring the drink. It made the whole place special like Christmas! We were seated in the atrium. Unfortunately it was not a sunny day but the atmosphere wound be great in the summer. The windows appear to open all the way to make a covered patio when the nice weather hits. The only negative.... The chairs... They are not comfortable and seem poorly made. The food: we ordered the charcuterie plate which came with prosciutto, blue cheese, pickled veggies, crostini, brie and some jams. To be honest, not the best charcuterie. Only one meat and no hard cheeses. Two of us ordered the gnocchi dish in a garlic cream sauce with brocolini and crispy garbanzo beans. The dish was intersting, but still good. The third dish was the Sweet Potato Confit which I tasted and was very good. Rooftop Bar: we went and checked it out. It was very bright lighting. There was a pretty cool fire pit outside but it was snowing so we didn't go out for for the view. All in all I think we would all go back for drinks and to check out the patio in the summer. The 1-1 Free lunch special is deceptive - it only goes to $15.00. The BOWL of soup is really a CUP based on how the china is designed; and it costs $9.00. I ordered a beef on weck; and the roll was excellent - soft like a croissant. The beef was fresh and piled high, the horseradish sauce was tasty (but I would have liked it creamier and more plentiful). Though there was some Aus jus - there should have been more and served on the side. The accompanying fries were crispy and light and tasty as well. My dining partner found the soup peppery, and enjoyed her Turkey wrap. My issues with the experience will keep me from returning unless it's for a specific reason; though I would be interested in trying dinner there. read more

Dressed up we like the dining room. Smart casual we like the enclosed patio. My wife loves to start or finish our evening here with a drink at their large circular rotating bar. We've always found the staff to be friendly and attentive. Meal choices range from pizzas to fine dining. Everything we've had here has always been very good and reasonably priced. Definitely a restaurant we will return to. Update Feb 14, 2020. Returned for Valentine's Day. My wife enjoys the ambience and the rotating bar. I was aware that most restaurants on special days such as Valentine's Day would have a special and limited menu. They did have a limited menu but it didn't disappoint. We started the evening with an hour at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. The rotating bar moves ever so slowly so as to not really notice but to keep the scenery changing. We started dinner with a salad and avocado and crab crostini. Both were very good and nicely presented. For our meals my wife had twin lobster tails and I had a fillet with a lobster tail. Both meals were very good. My wife chose the cheesecake for dessert and enjoyed it. I went with the chocolate cake that was described as decadent. It was good but to me hardly a decadent chocolate dessert and just a nice piece of chocolate cake. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. If you drink gin, you know that botanist is one of the best, and Chez ami has it behind the bar so this night starts out on a positive note. Very casual atmosphere and with a 6:00 dinner reservation there was no rush to be seated as we had a drink at the bar first. The service was excellent, attentive yet not overbearing. We have three appetizers all which were exactly as described on the menu served swiftly and all delicious. For dinner I had the Pork duo which was served with grits and a glaze which fully complimented the pork. The desserts are a very good size and all very rich and filling so be careful with those. I will start this review out by giving a big thanks to my server Frank, because without him I would probably be in the Erie County Holding Center right now if it was up to the management of this establishment. But we'll get to that soon. Kudos to all of the designers as this hotel was restored and decorated very well. Definitely does not feel like you're in Buffalo New York when you're walking in. From valet you walk through a courtyard like quarter and make a sharp left which leads you to the main lobby of the hotel. The restaurant will be to your right. I started to sit at the bar because I did not notice a hostess station at first but it's kind of tucked away in the corner. I was greeted and sat by the windows which overlooked Huron Street. If you're looking for a fantastic view of a parking lot this is the seating area for you! I noticed a lot of the other reviews complained about the food. The salad I was started out with was very nicely plated but the dressing lacked flavor. It was just the salad though so I can forgive that. The main entree, the garganelli was perfectly prepared, full of flavor and an excellent dish. I would have liked to have seen a little larger pieces of crab. Now for the interesting part of the evening. After finishing my meal I discovered that I had actually left my wallet at home and with only $22 in cash on me I knew I would not have enough to cover my meal. I got my servers attention who was Frank and explained what was going on. I offered my cell phone and jewelry as collateral while I ran to go grab my phone but Frank informed me that he had to get a manager. I don't recall the gentleman's name but he did introduce himself and then proceeded to explain that I needed to call someone to come pay my bill or the police would be called. If I was at Applebee's, Red Lobster or TGI Fridays I wouldn't have been very surprised by a comment like that. But at a fine dining restaurant where I had not even ran up that much of a bill ($38.06) it was very unexpected. Luckily I have a part-time job right down the street and was able to call a manager that was willing to come cover my tab. Before that could occur Frank told me to stop the call and explain that he would cover my meal and just wanted me to bring him back the cost. I accepted that deal and hurried home and hurried back as quickly as possible to take care of Frank. I was nicely dressed. Carried myself well. And parked my $40k vehicle in the hotel's valet. Some may disagree but I feel as though it was very unnecessary to suggest that police would have to be called in this situation. It was an honest mistake and I don't believe that I presented any reason why any member of the staff would think that I was attempting to run out on a check. Furthermore I can't believe that a manager would have police come arrest a patron in the middle of their restaurant for a measly $38. This very well maybe why the current rating of this restaurant is already so low prior to my review. I had high hopes for this restaurant despite the fact that it's a hotel restaurant and they've only been open for a couple of weeks. I want to be fair considering it is a restaurant in Buffalo and we just came back from Paris last week where the food was absolutely phenomenal at reasonable prices, so our taste buds have been completely spoiled. Hence the "A-OK" 3 stars. I made a reservation about 10 days prior, so no issues there since it was so far in advance. The check-in area is also where the staircase into the bar area was - which can get a bit crowded/cramped if you have guests waiting to be seated just standing around as it is also where the main server station is. Our server was an older gentleman and very nice and attentive throughout the night, but it was obvious that he was likely new to fine dining. We received a one page drink menu which included the beer selection as well as the wine selection. Since there were only 5 red wines on the list, we asked him if they had a wine list. He came back with the exact same drink menu that we already had, and when he realized that, he said they must not have another wine list. OK, fine. We wanted a cabernet and they had 2, so we attempted to ask him which one he would recommend and he had absolutely no clue. At a place like this, your server should at least have some knowledge of what wines you offer. We ordered the octopus ($17) and margherita pizza ($16) to share as starters. They were both tasty, but not "worth the prices charged" tasty. My husband and our friend both ordered the gnocchetti and were warned about its 3oz small portion size. Again, it was pretty good but not worth $16! I ordered the aged duck ($34) - it came with the fatty skin on top which i'm not a fan of. The flavor was pretty good but nothing to rave about. The dessert menu looked sad so we decided to go elsewhere for dessert. On a side note, one of the bus boys asked me if he could have my autograph after I was done with dinner. I was so confused until he told us that everyone is saying how XXX (some public figure/celebrity) is here. It dawned on me that all the people I saw (and made fun of) crowding the check-in area taking pictures of the dining room were actually taking pictures of me because they thought I was someone else! The poor bus boy didn't even know who the person is but figured he'd get my autograph anyway. Honestly, I look nothing like that person they all thought I was, and it was kind of insulting. Even though it's not the restaurant's fault that they had all these ignorant customers, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Bartenders are completely inept!! Seems like they'll throw anyone back there regardless of experience. Girls just constantly on their phones, and paying no attention to patrons. Very little knowledge of cocktails as she looked like a deer in headlights when we ordered a martini, and a couple cocktails. We practically had to wave her down each time we wanted a drink. We noticed other patrons getting annoyed with the lack of service also, as they too noticed her just on her phone and not acknowledging the empty glasses and people staring at her trying to make eye contact to order. I work one block away and wanted very much to love this place as my new lunch and after work spot. Sadly, after two visits, it disappointed twice. This is a new place and they are obviously working out their kinks but they desperately need to hire better staff for service and better cook for the food. The first time I came here was after work and my friend and I sat at the rotating bar. We shared the pork belly, the mushroom pizza and the burrata. The Crispy Burrata, at $14, is a reasonably sized piece of cheese with a few small tomatoes and some arugula and balsamic dressing. It isn't cheap but the taste is alright. The Mushroom Pizza, at $18, is absurdly overpriced considering the size and taste. The mushrooms taste canned. The pizza comes with "smoked mozzarella" that tastes oddly bland and "truffled greens" that are basic arugula on top. It's flavorless and expensive. The Berkshire Pork Belly, at $15, is a small piece of pork with a small shishito pepper and a tiny amount of BBQ lentils that are tasteless. It is overpriced and lacks flavor. Our bartender was disgusting. He had one glove on and would repeatedly blow and spit into the glove (presumably because it was too tight) and then use that same gloved hand with spit to serve drinks. The conversations that he was having with other patrons were also vulgar. His response time to us was very slow. He did not know any details about the food menu items. He seemed bothered to serve us. On my second visit to the restaurant, this time for lunch, I went with another friend. We both ordered the Cous Cous off the lunch menu for $16. It came with a small piece of salmon, four tiny pieces of orange and bland Cous Cous that had zero seasoning. I asked for salt and waited over 20 minutes for the bartender lady to bring it to me (seated at the rotating bar again, there were only 4-5 other people there and two bartenders; there was no reason for her to ignore me). Overall, the dish is high priced for a Buffalo lunch salad and lacks flavor at any price. I strongly recommend NOT getting this dish. With regard to the rotating bar, it's a cool idea that works for high rise buildings that offer a view. Here, you rotate so that your view of a parking lot structure changes to a view of an open parking lot to a view of a hostess stand. There really is nothing to see so the rotation is pointless. Also, the chairs are oddly spaced apart so that if you have a group of more than two, you can't sit together because he stools are bolted into the ground and spaced out oddly. You can bring a stool over from the window bar but those stools are significantly shorter and then you feel like a midget next to your friends. The entire arrangement is odd and uncomfortable. In short, until this place works out its menu, hires a legit chef, adjusts the seating and service, I do NOT recommend coming here. AVOID!!! read more

Had a very bad meal at Chez Ami. I went there with 5 people for a work related dinner with the hope of finding a new place that would be good for such an occasion. That did not work out as i had hoped. The service was ok, however the server forgot one of appetizers and then said "the kitchen was confused" when i asked and he finally brought it out. It was a beet appetizer that was smothered in vinegar so it was actually better left forgotten. We ordered a mushroom pizza which was the highlight of the meal at mediocre at best. For entrees three of us ordered the filet, 2 medium and 1 medium rare. All three were over cooked and had to be remade. They were apologetic about this and bought us a bottle of wine. When we finally got the steaks back the rissotto with them was extemely heavy and they were using canned aspargus instead of fresh. The dish was just heavy and had bad flavor. The other guests got a short rib which was ok, and ribeye which was just slopped on the plate with way to much sides that the plate was overflowing and overocooked pasta that was mushy and flavorless. We were not happy with anything but stayed for dessert. All the desserts seemed to be old and even had strawberry garnishes on them that looked like they were cut the week before. The NY style cheesecake had frozen strawberries from a bag and the creme brulee which we ordered three of were so eggy and runny that we had to send them back. When we sent the back the waiter said he understands and a lot of people complain about the creme brulee!! The manager and service seemed apologetic about the poor meal but we would never come back as the ownerr seems much more interested in having high end chairs and tables than serving quality food. Such high hopes but truly a disappointment. Went on a Saturday night - was not too busy. Our server was brand new and I truly felt horrible for him that he was put in the position of having no training and being thrown out on his own. Could not answer ANY questions and looked terrified to be working. This does not reflect on him but on the leadership here who decided this was acceptable: Food was average but we were constantly waiting for the next issue with our server which made the experience extremely below average. I hope leadership learns to put more attention into their teams to set them up for success as this young man was not. read more

Sadly a very bad experience. Started with the valet who didn't want to get his hair wet when we pulled up. Three ladies, one 87. Ugh. Waitress Brittney, while nice, totally inexperienced. A very good octopus appetizer, bread was cold and hard. Waited over 45 minutes for dinner , while everyone around us was served. Meals were mediocre at best. Told us dinner was delayed because of staffing issues in the kitchen. Odd that everyone else was served. No desert. Options were sad. Will never go back. read more

Very nice surroundings, limited lunch menu priced slightly higher than other downtown eateries. Food was good, nothing to rave about. We went during a BOGO lunch special. Otherwise, I don't think the lunch would have been worth the menu prices. read more
